Ahead of his side's match against Japanese football club Avispa Fukuoka, Punjab FC youth team coach Praveen Kumar has said that conditions in Japan would not be a major issue for their side, pointing to similarities with the weather in India and also the extra effort made for acclimatisation.

Punjab FC youth team is in Fukuoka as a part of Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL) exposure tour to Japan from July 11-23, under which they would compete against youth teams of some of Japan's top clubs. It is the third-placed side of the RFDL season 2025-26, with top-two teams, Bengaluru FC and FC Goa having also earned a spot for the tour.

Match Preparations and Expectations

Speaking about the match, scheduled for Tuesday, Praveen Kumar said they were excited for the match. "We are very excited; that is what we have been preparing for, and I believe we are well-prepared. Let us see what we face tomorrow," Kumar told ANI.

On the team's acclimatisation in Japan after having played in the UK during the Premier League Next Gen Cup and in India, Praveen Kumar said that players arrived a couple days earlier and are acclimatising to conditions. Having gone through video footage of Japanese teams, he expects a higher intensity. "We arrived here almost two days early, so the players are currently acclimatising. We even had a training session today. There is not a huge difference between India and here; it is quite hot here, just like it was in Punjab, so I do not think the temperature will be a major issue. But again, it wouldn't be right to take the name of any one player; I'll say it was an entire team performance," she added.

It felt good to see her fitness. She was also energetic on the field. But the way she took top-order wickets, especially Nat Sciver-Brunt and Capsey, means you are a bowler who can bowl in any phase. And when you have such a bowler in the Test circuit, then the captain has a privilege there," she said.

Because it's not that easy to know when to bring in a pacer, when to bring in a spinner, and among spinners, too, when to bring Sneh Rana, when to bring Deepti, how you have to adjust Shree Charani in between because she didn't have that good a Test match with the ball. So overall, it was proactive captaincy," she said.

"But at the same time, Harmanpreet Kaur, the batter, was seen. I felt good seeing that runs came from her bat, runs came from Smriti's bat. Captaincy feels good only when the player themselves are performing. That's why this captaincy shone out even more," she added.

Reflecting on the achievement, Dhanda described the medal as a landmark moment not just for herself but for Indian shotgun shooting. "The day felt like a very special day for the entire Indian shooting team and for India, especially for me, my family, the Indian Army, Bhopal Shooting Academy, the NRAI (National Rifle Association of India), and SAI (Sports Authority of India). Team Duran Racing's ace rally duo of Hyderabad's Naveen Puligilla and co-driver Musa Sherif of Kasaragod produced a stunning performance to win the ARC3 class in the 2026 Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally, the third round of the FIA African Rally Championship (ARC), which concluded here late on Sunday night.

Apart from winning the ARC3 category, the Hyderabad-Kasaragod pair punched well above their weight in their Ford Fiesta Rally3, prepared and serviced by MRU Motorsport Africa, to finish an impressive fourth overall, competing against several more powerful Rally2 cars in a field of 17 entries from Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Zimbabwe, Denmark and India, according to a press release.

Dominant Performance on Tough Terrain

"These gravel stages are tough and technical, but also very fast. It is one of the fastest rallies I have experienced. I am delighted with this win," said Naveen.

Touching speeds of nearly 170 kmph, Naveen and Musa dominated the ARC3 category by winning 12 of the 18 special stages. Holding a comfortable lead of nearly two minutes, they eased their pace in the final two stages to seal a convincing class victory. They completed the rally in 2 hours, 13 minutes and 48.3 seconds despite overcoming a mapping sensor issue during one of the special stages.

A Partnership with a Winning History

Naveen, the reigning 2025 Indian National Rally Champion in the 3T class, was partnered by seasoned co-driver Musa Sherif, an eight-time Indian National Rally champion with over 34 years of rallying experience.

"Naveen was fast and consistent throughout the rally, and the car felt great from start to finish. Winning the ARC3 class and finishing fourth overall against such a competitive field is a credit to the hard work of the entire team," said Musa.

With this result, Naveen and Musa moved up to second place in the ARC3 championship standings. European football's governing body, UEFA, along with major domestic leagues and players' unions, are strongly against this expansion. Their main worry is that players are already under immense physical and mental pressure due to a packed match schedule.

They argue that adding more games could be damaging to players' careers. The 2030 World Cup is already set to be historic. For the first time ever, it will be held across three continents and six countries (Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay).

Only the first three matches of the World Cup will be held in Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. In Delhi, the mega event was organised at the Major Dhyanchand National Stadium, where a festival of fitness started from the early hours on Sunday, according to a press release. By 5.30 am more than 1000 citizens had queued up for various fitness activities such as yoga, Zumba, and rope skipping before cycling around the picturesque India Gate for a 5-kilometre ride.

Chartered Accountants Promote 'Fitness for All'

A game zone with board games such as carrom, chess and fitness games such as badminton, obstacle race, kept youngsters engaged throughout the morning. However, it was the chartered accountants who seemed most enthusiastic about participating in all the activities. From Zumba to yoga - there was no stopping them.

"Chartered accountants joining in to be part of the Fit India Sundays on Cycle is our way of saying that staying fit should not be restricted to just athletes, actors or armed forces, no matter what profession you are in, staying fit is mandatory. We have participated in large numbers across the country to give this message of 'Fitness is for All'. This initiative by the Sports Ministry is unique because it brings together people from all walks of life and all age groups to make India a fitter nation," said Dr. Sambit Kumar Mishra, Deputy Director, Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, after his ride around India Gate.

Special Guests Laud the Initiative

The event also saw the participation of special guests - Hockey Asian Champion and silver medalist, Suman Devi Thoudam and nutritionist and Fit India Ambassador Utkarsh Saxena. Hailing the initiative, Suman said, "The Fit India Movement, which was started by Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji has indeed become popular. Today, so many people have joined the Sundays on Cycle programme voluntarily with families and young children, which shows the level of interest in including fitness activities in daily life. I think cycling is not just an easy way to stay fit, but it is also something that people of any economic background can take up. "Fit India Sundays on Cycle is a fantastic initiative. The platform being given by the government to motivate people to lead a fit life is a starting point, but India can only become a fit nation when every Indian takes responsibility of his or her own fitness. It is a small decision - pick up a cycle and go for a ride, but that decision has to be made by every individual," said Utkarsh.

Across the country, the 81st edition of the Fit India Sundays on Cycle was celebrated not just in all metros and tier 1 cities such as Lucknow, Guwahati, Hyderabad among several others, but also in places such as Androth in Lakshadweep, Golaghat in Assam, Mastuana Sahib in Punjab, among 2000 other locations.

The Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council on Sunday rejected allegations made by para archer Rakesh Kumar regarding his alleged exclusion from the recruitment process under SO-12 of 2022, asserting that the athlete had never applied for the advertised posts and, therefore, his candidature was never available for consideration. J&K Sports Council spokesperson, in a statement issued here, stated, "It has come to the notice that certain statements attributed to Mr Rakesh Kumar, Para Archer, have been circulated through various media platforms alleging that he was unfairly excluded from the selection process for appointment under SO-12 of 2022 governing the appointment of Outstanding Sportspersons. These assertions are factually incorrect and require immediate clarification in the interest of maintaining transparency and public confidence." "It is categorically stated that, as per the official records maintained by the Department, Mr Rakesh Kumar never submitted an application pursuant to the notification inviting applications for appointment under SO-12 of 2022. Consequently, his candidature was never available for scrutiny or consideration by the duly constituted Scrutiny Committee or Selection Committee," the statement further added.

Recruitment Process Was Transparent

The J&K Sports Council said the recruitment process under SO-12 of 2022 was conducted transparently and in accordance with the rules. It stated that the General Merit List was published on July 19, 2024, and kept in the public domain for 15 days to allow applicants and stakeholders to raise objections or seek corrections. According to the Council, Rakesh Kumar did not submit any objection or grievance during this period regarding his alleged exclusion from the merit list. "The recruitment process was conducted in a transparent and rule-bound manner. Upon scrutiny of all applications received within the prescribed period, the General Merit List was published by the Youth Services & Sports Department, Civil Secretariat, J&K, on 19 July 2024 and placed in the public domain for a period of 15 days, specifically to invite objections, corrections, or grievances from applicants and other stakeholders, the spokesperson said. "During this objection period, Mr Rakesh Kumar neither submitted any objection nor raised any grievance alleging his exclusion from the General Merit List, despite the Department providing an adequate opportunity to all concerned persons to point out any omission or discrepancy, " it added.

'Non-Participation, Not Unfair Exclusion'

The J&K Sports Council further said Rakesh Kumar approached the department only after the provisional selection list was issued on February 11, seeking inclusion despite not having applied under the original recruitment notification. The Council added that such a request could not be accepted because recruitment rules require candidates to submit valid applications within the prescribed deadline. It maintained that Kumar's claims of being excluded are not supported by official records, asserting that the issue was one of non-participation in the recruitment process rather than unfair exclusion. "It was only after the selection process had substantially progressed and the Provisional Selection List was issued on 11 February 2026 that Mr Rakesh Kumar submitted a representation seeking inclusion by way of backdoor entry in the selection process. Such a request could not legally be entertained since he had never applied under the recruitment notification. It is a settled principle of every recruitment process that consideration for appointment is contingent upon submission of a valid application within the prescribed time and in accordance with the notified procedure. A person who has not applied pursuant to the advertisement cannot claim consideration for selection as a matter of right, " the statement reads. "In these circumstances, the allegations that Mr Rakesh Kumar was 'excluded' from the selection process are wholly unsupported by the official record. The issue is not one of exclusion, but rather of non-participation in the recruitment process, " it added.

Council Urges Factual Accuracy, Warns Against Misinformation

The J&K Sports Council acknowledged the contributions of athletes but urged that claims related to recruitment procedures should be supported by facts. It warned that inaccurate statements about a transparent selection process could cause public misunderstanding and affect trust in official institutions. "The Department & Sports fraternity respects the achievements and contributions of every sportsperson, including distinguished athletes. However, public statements concerning official recruitment processes must be based on accurate and verifiable facts. Dissemination of incorrect information regarding a transparent statutory recruitment process has the potential to mislead the public, create unwarranted confusion, and undermine confidence in institutional processes, the statement further added. The J&K Sports Council stated that the recruitment process under SO-12 of 2022 was conducted strictly according to rules and reviewed by authorised committees. It said legal action may be considered against anyone deliberately spreading false or misleading information that could create confusion or disrupt the recruitment process. The department urged stakeholders and the sports community to rely only on official communications and verified records while discussing such matters. "That the recruitment under SO-12 of 2022 was undertaken strictly in accordance with the applicable Rules, after scrutiny by the competent committees constituted for the purpose. The Department reserves its right to take such action as may be permissible under law against any person found to be knowingly disseminating false or misleading information concerning official proceedings, with the object or effect of causing unwarranted public confusion or obstructing the orderly functioning of the recruitment process. It is once again requested to all stakeholders and members of the sporting fraternity to rely only on official communications and authenticated records while commenting upon matters of public importance, " the statement concluded.
