Men gained more fat, showed reduced testosterone, and had higher levels of harmful plastic-related pollutants.

An international team of scientists has now discovered that people gain more weight on an ultra-processed diet compared to a minimally processed diet, even when they eat the same number of calories. The study in humans also revealed that a diet high in ultra-processed foods introduces higher levels of pollutants that are known to affect sperm quality. The findings were published in the journal Cell Metabolism.

"Our results prove that ultra-processed foods harm our reproductive and metabolic health, even if they're not eaten in excess. This indicates that it is the processed nature of these foods that makes them harmful," says Jessica Preston, lead author of the study, who carried out the research during her PhD at the University of Copenhagen's NNF Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR).

To get the best possible data, the scientists compared the health impact of unprocessed and ultra-processed diets on the same person. They recruited 43 men aged 20 to 35, who spent three weeks on each of the two diets, with three months 'washout' in between.Half started on the ultra-processed and half started on the unprocessed diet. Half of the men also received a high-calorie diet with an extra 500 daily calories, while half received the normal amount of calories for their size, age and physical activity levels.

They were not told which diet they were on. Both the unprocessed and ultra-processed diets had the same amount of calories, protein, carbs and fats.

Men gained around 1 kg more of fat mass while on the ultra-processed diet compared to the unprocessed diet, regardless of whether they were on the normal or excess calorie diet. Several other markers of cardiovascular health were also affected.

The scientists also discovered a worrying increase in the level of the hormone-disrupting phthalate cxMINP, a substance used in plastics, in men on the ultra-processed diet. Men on this diet also saw decreases in their levels of testosterone and follicle-stimulating hormone, which are crucial for sperm production.

"We were shocked by how many body functions were disrupted by ultra-processed foods, even in healthy young men. The long-term implications are alarming and highlight the need to revise nutritional guidelines to better protect against chronic disease." says the study's senior author Professor Romain Barrès from the University of Copenhagen's NNF Center for Basic Metabolic Research, and the Universite Cote d'Azur.

(Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by Asianet Newsable English staff and is published from a syndicated feed.)

Personal Loan Warning Signs: People often take out personal loans for weddings, medical emergencies, or other big expenses. But did you know a poorly planned loan can wreck your finances? Let's look at 5 things you need to watch out for.

The first step before taking a personal loan is choosing the right lender (Bank, NBFC). Just because an app or NBFC promises a loan in 15 minutes doesn't mean it's trustworthy. Always borrow from an RBI-registered bank or NBFC. Check the company's ratings, customer reviews, and authorization details before taking a loan. Remember, borrowing from an unauthorized lender can put your personal and financial details at risk.

Often, people focus only on EMI and interest while taking a loan and ignore the processing fee. Some banks and NBFCs charge a fixed amount. At the same time, many lenders charge a processing fee of 2% to 5% of the loan amount. For example, if you take a loan of 5 lakhs and a 3% processing fee is charged, then you will have to pay an extra Rs 15,000. Therefore, compare processing fees before taking a loan.

Always borrow only as much as you can comfortably repay. Taking a large amount makes the EMI burdensome, and you can get caught in a debt trap. Before taking a loan, calculate your monthly income, expenses, and savings.

Sometimes, banks or NBFCs do not disclose all charges while taking a loan. Later, you have to pay hidden charges like prepayment charges, foreclosure charges, and late payment penalties. So, read the loan agreement carefully. Look at customer reviews. Get all the terms and conditions in writing. This will save you from sudden hidden charges later.

The interest rate is the real factor that makes your loan expensive or cheap. Compare the interest rates of different banks and NBFCs. Currently, the interest rate on personal loans in the country ranges from about 10% to 24%. Remember, a lower interest rate means easier EMIs and less burden.

Disclaimer: This article is for informational purposes only. The points mentioned here are not financial or banking advice. Always assess your financial condition and consult with the relevant bank, NBFC, or authorized financial expert before taking a personal loan. Loan terms, interest rates, and charges are subject to change.

Ganesh Chaturthi, a festival celebrated in honor of Ganesha, the deity who removes obstacles and grants wisdom, prosperity, and success, is one of the most celebrated Hindu festivals. In India, devotees celebrate Bappa with grandeur, prayers, sweets, and bhog: While Modaks, laddus, and fresh fruits may be considered auspicious, there are several food items and ingredients that must never be offered to Lord Ganesha during puja. Avoiding them constitutes an action that maintains the purity of the rituals and keeps them spiritually aligned.

10 Items You Must Not Include in Bhog for Lord Ganesh

1. Tulsi Leaves

Tulsi is a sacred plant in Hinduism, but it should never be offered to Lord Ganesha. Legend has it that Tulsi cursed Ganesha after he rejected her advances, making Tulsi leaves inauspicious for his worship.

2. Non-Vegetarian Food

Ganesha is the symbol of purity, sattva, and divine energy; thus, the offering of bhog or puja is strictly prohibited for such substance. Meat, fish, and eggs, one say.

3. Garlic and Onion

Garlic and onion are categorized as tamasic (impure) food items. Since they are said to reduce spiritual vibrations, these three foods are avoided during all major Hindu functions, such as Ganesh Chaturthi.

4. Bitter Gourd

Bitter hor chops from fromtade nicng probriteswtoauries. As bhog should always be sweet, sattvic, and pleasant for consumption, offering bitter gourd to Lord Ganesh is strictly prohibited.

5. Alcohol and Intoxicants

All forms of alcohol, tobacco, and any form of intoxicant must be prohibited for Ganesh puja. They are a symbol of bad habits and destroy the sanctity of the particular ritual.

6. Stale Food

Lord Ganesha is always being offered fresh prasad. It would be disrespectful and spiritually impure to offer stale food or anything left over from the previous day.

7. Broken Rice

On the other hand, offering broken rice is considered inauspicious-a belief that must not be violated. Whole rice grains are used during puja (akshata). It is supposed to be a hindrance toward prosperity and brings bad luck if the broken rice is offered.

8. Sesame Seeds

Though some rituals regard sesame seeds as auspicious, the Ganesh Chaturthi bhog avoids them. Scriptures suggest that sesame is linked with ancestral offerings (pitr paksha) and thus is not ideal for this festival.

9. Certain Fruits (like Custard Apple and Jamun)

Seasonal fruits are generally accepted, but custard apples and jamun are avoided due to their association with spiritual impurity during the rituals. Bananas, coconuts, and guavas are preferred instead.

10. Red Chillies and Spices

Prayers to Lord Ganesha are accompanied by an offering of mild, sattvic foods. Thus, red chillies and pepper must be avoided, and spicy foods are entirely unsuitable.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2025 thus goes beyond mere celebration; it is the display of dedicated devotion. Offering pure foods such as modaks, fruits, coconut, and jaggery not only helps maintain spiritual equilibrium but also endears one to Lord Ganesha. It helps maintain pure conditions for puja and invoke Bappa's blessings of health, wisdom, and prosperity by abstaining from the above-mentioned items in bhog.

Silent heart attacks often lack classic symptoms like intense chest pain. Subtle signs like unexplained fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, and upper body pain can indicate a silent heart attack, especially in women.
A silent heart attack, or silent myocardial infarction, is a heart attack that occurs without typical symptoms like intense chest pain. People often mistake these subtle signs, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment. Silent heart attacks are more common in women than men. Women may experience symptoms like shortness of breath, nausea, or fatigue, which they might attribute to other causes like stress or anxiety.

This fatigue occurs because the heart isn't effectively pumping blood, leading to a decreased oxygen supply to the body. You might feel excessively tired even after adequate rest.

Intense chest pain doesn't always occur during a silent heart attack. You might experience mild chest discomfort, pressure, or tightness. This discomfort can be fleeting or intermittent, making it easy to dismiss.

Experiencing shortness of breath even without strenuous activity or while resting can indicate a heart problem. This symptom arises because the heart struggles to pump enough blood to meet the body's demands, resulting in inadequate oxygen supply.

Unexplained nausea, vomiting, or a feeling of fullness can be due to a silent heart attack (especially if unrelated to meals). These symptoms are often mistaken for gastrointestinal issues but can indicate heart problems.

Dizziness, especially when standing up suddenly, can be a sign of reduced blood flow to the brain due to heart problems. This symptom shouldn't be ignored, as it can indicate a serious condition.

Sudden, unexplained sweating without physical exertion can be a warning sign of a heart attack. Cold sweats can occur with stress or pain and may be more pronounced in some individuals.

Pain or discomfort in areas like the jaw, neck, back, or arms, even without chest pain, can be indicative of a silent heart attack. This pain may come and go like muscle strain or be mild.

Difficulty falling asleep or waking up unrefreshed can be linked to heart problems. Sleep disruption can occur due to discomfort or anxiety related to heart issues.

Feelings of unexplained anxiety or a sense that something is wrong can precede a silent heart attack. This is thought to be due to the body's response to stress caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscle.

Trouble falling asleep, frequent nighttime awakenings, or feeling tired even after a full night's rest can be symptoms of heart problems.

All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Kalyan Chaubey congratulated Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya after Parliament passed the National Sports Governance and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, saying that this act will ensure that our athletes are clean, especially when the country is about to host a major international game.

The bill was introduced by Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya to provide a robust legal framework for sports governance in India, promoting transparency, accountability, and athlete welfare.

‘Sports must have ethics and safe sports policy’

While speaking to ANI, Kalyan Chaubey said, "I congratulate Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya for bringing this Act after 4 decades... This Act benefits Indian sports in two major areas. Firstly, forming a National Sports Board that will have the authority to grant or cancel registration or recognition of a sports organisation. To see sports must have ethics and safe sports policy, especially athletes below 18, or including girls and women."

"Secondly, the issue about hundreds of litigations, pending in courts, will be addressed by the Sports Tribunal, saving unnecessary spending which will now be used for the development of sports... It also addresses the misuse of the name "India" or Indian insignia by parallel sports bodies. This Act will ensure that our athletes are clean, especially when the country is about to host a major international game," he added. This landmark legislation stands as the country's first unified and comprehensive legal framework for sports governance--an achievement that brings decades of calls for reform to fruition.

A decade-old bill passed in Rajya Sabha

For over a decade, efforts to establish such a robust law have been ongoing, dating back to 2011. Despite various attempts and drafts, a bill of this vision and scale had never reached Parliament--let alone won approval--until now.

The National Sports Governance Bill paves the way for a new standard of transparency, accountability, and ethical management in sports. The legislation sets clear expectations for National Sports Federations and the Indian Olympic Association, ensuring mechanisms for fair elections, financial openness, and inclusive representation.

National Sports Bill promotes equality in sports administration

Significantly, it mandates athlete commissions, a strong voice for players in governing bodies, and at least 30 percent women's representation to promote gender equality in sports administration. With robust structures to safeguard athlete welfare--particularly for women and minors--and strict anti-doping and safe sport regulations, the bill puts the needs and rights of athletes at the heart of Indian sports.

Also, the Bill's alignment with the Olympic and Paralympic Charters shows India's determination not just to compete--but to lead--on the global sports map, as the nation sets its sights on hosting the 2036 Olympic Games and achieving developed-nation status by 2047. By enshrining best practices in law, the Bill eliminates ambiguity and offers a unified structure where transparent administration, gender equality, and swift conflict resolution are the norm, not the exception.

What if the plastic container you use daily is quietly harming your health? A new study published in the journal eBiomedicine has revealed a disturbing link between everyday plastic products and early death from heart disease. The main culprit? A group of chemicals called phthalates, used to make plastics softer and more flexible.

These chemicals are everywhere—in your shampoo, makeup, food storage boxes, plastic wrap, vinyl flooring, perfumes, and even children’s toys. But while these items make life convenient, the chemicals inside them may be shortening our lives.

What are phthalates?

Phthalates (pronounced thal-ates) are synthetic chemicals added to plastic to make it more durable and flexible. One type of phthalate, called DEHP (Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate), is especially common.

Unfortunately, DEHP and other phthalates are not strongly attached to the materials they’re in. That means they can easily leach into food, air, water, and skin—making exposure almost unavoidable.

What did the study find?

The new global study, led by researchers at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine, looked at how DEHP affects people across 200 countries and territories. They compared levels of DEHP in people’s urine with global death data. The results were shocking:

In 2018 alone, exposure to DEHP was linked to 368,764 deaths worldwide among people aged 55 to 64

30% of these deaths were in Africa, and 25% were in East Asia and the Middle East

The main cause of death? Heart disease—triggered by inflammation in coronary arteries caused by these chemicals

“Phthalates contribute to inflammation in the coronary arteries, which can lead to deadly cardiac events,” said senior author Dr. Leonardo Trasande.

Other dangers of phthalates

The danger isn’t just to the heart. Phthalates have long been linked to:

Reproductive problems in men – including lower sperm counts and disrupted testosterone

Genital malformations in newborn boys

Asthma and allergies

Childhood obesity

Certain cancers

Where are phthalates found?

You’ll find phthalates in:

Plastic food containers and wrap

Shampoo, perfume, makeup, and lotion

Vinyl flooring and furniture

Air fresheners

Children’s plastic toys

Canned and processed foods

Since phthalates are not tightly bonded to these products, they easily enter our bodies through inhalation, skin contact, and food consumption.

How to protect yourself

While it’s difficult to avoid phthalates completely, here are simple ways to reduce your exposure:

Don’t heat plastic – Never microwave or dishwash plastic containers. Use glass or steel instead

Choose fragrance-free products – Unscented lotions and cleaning items often contain fewer hidden chemicals

Buy fresh, not canned – Fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables reduce exposure to plastic-packaged and processed food

Read plastic codes – Avoid plastics marked No. 3 (PVC), No. 6 (polystyrene), and No. 7 (other)

Skip air fresheners – They often release phthalates into the air

Wash hands regularly – Especially before eating, to remove chemical residues

Store food safely – Use containers made of glass, ceramic, or stainless steel

This study adds to growing evidence that the plastic we use daily isn’t just polluting the planet, and it may be hurting our bodies too.

While governments and companies debate stricter regulations, small changes in your daily habits can reduce your risk.

Being aware of what goes into our homes, and onto our skin, could help save lives in the long run. Sometimes, the most ordinary objects hide the greatest dangers.

A new research by scientists shows erythritol, a common sugar substitute, can harm brain blood vessel cells, raising stroke risk. The study found cell changes tied to clotting and vessel narrowing.

Erythritol is a low-calorie sweetener used in sugar-free drinks, ice cream and keto snacks. It's about 80% as sweet as sugar and doesn't affect blood sugar. Approved by the FDA in 2001, it became popular for weight loss and diabetes diets. But, if you assumed it made those 'sugar-free food products' safer, you need to read this and rethink your food habits!

New research links Erythritol to brain vessel cell damage

A study led by Dr. Christopher DeSouza at the University of Colorado Boulder found that human brain blood vessel cells, after just three hours of erythritol exposure at levels in a soda can, showed harmful changes. Key findings of the study:

Lower nitric oxide, which helps widen blood vessels

More endothelin‑1, which narrows them

Less t‑PA, a natural clot-breaker

Higher free radical levels, increasing cell damage.

How this may increase stroke risk

With narrower blood vessels, lower clot-fighting ability and more oxidative stress, the stage is set for blocked vessels in the brain. This can lead to strokes. Lab results now match earlier studies in people showing higher erythritol levels are linked to more strokes and heart attacks.

Past studies support this worry

A Cleveland Clinic study with around 4,000 adults in the US and Europe found people with higher blood erythritol levels had more heart attacks and strokes over the next three years.

Other research showed that 30 g of erythritol, like in a pint of sugar-free ice cream, makes blood platelets more likely to form clots.

The significance of this cell study

In human cells exposed to a normal sweetener dose:

Nitric oxide dropped ~20%

Vessel-narrowing endothelin‑1 rose by ~30%

t-PA release after clot challenge was 'markedly blunted'

Free radicals nearly doubled

Even one drink may disrupt brain blood vessel health.

Experts urge caution

Dr. DeSouza and first author Auburn Berry stress that their research was in lab cells, not in people. Still, it highlights how seemingly harmless sweeteners can affect cells. They advise reading labels and limiting erythritol use.

Dr. Thomas Holland (not on the study) says it may harm vascular and brain health, especially with regular use. He suggests moderation or choosing natural options like stevia or honey.

What it means for you

Be a bit more vigilant with your food choices. You need to be very careful with what you replace your sugar intake. Check labels: look for 'erythritol' or 'sugar alcohol'. You can limit the drinks and treats that contain erythritol. Always try to choose natural sweeteners, if possible.

In the past, erythritol has been seen as a safe way to enjoy sweet treats without sugar. But new cell research shows it may affect brain blood vessels and raise stroke risk. It's wise to watch your intake and choose healthier alternatives when you can.

Hypertension in pregnancy can be identified before, during or after pregnancy. Pregnancy-related high blood pressure begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy and ends shortly after the delivery. It's also known as pregnancy-induced hypertension or gestational hypertension. Because your heart has to work harder and is under more stress during pregnancy, high blood pressure during pregnancy has a distinct effect on your body. It affects the mother, the infant, and the placenta. There is higher risk of complications before labor, during labor and after delivery in such cases.

Gestational hypertension is high blood pressure that occurs in the latter half of pregnancy but doesn’t affect your organs generally but monitoring of pregnancy is required more frequently. Preeclampsia is a serious form of high blood pressure and can cause serious health problems like kidney, liver and brain damage. It can cause growth problems for the fetus and increase the risk of stillbirth.

It is unknown what specifically causes hypertension during pregnancy. Certain conditions may increase your risk like age below 20 or over 40, multiple pregnancy, family history of hypertension, past history of hypertension in previous pregnancy or having diabetes or gestational diabetes.

What are the symptoms of high blood pressure?

Symptoms of high blood pressure are headaches, blurred vision, sudden weight gain, swelling of the body, vomiting and pain in the abdomen. Uncontrolled hypertension can cause seizures, hemorrhage in pregnancy, temporary kidney failure, clotting abnormalities and stroke in mother. These symptoms may represent a serious emergency. Do not wait for the symptoms to go away and visit the emergency.

The infant may need to be delivered via cesarean section. Baby is at the risk of low birth weight, prematurity and intrauterine demise.

Hypertension in pregnancy may require blood pressure monitoring at home, medications to reduce the pressure and may be hospitalization. Follow salt restricted diet and exercise regularly. Baby is monitored frequently by doing ultrasound, Doppler studies and NST.

How can you avoid hypertension in pregnancy?

Hypertension in pregnancy can be avoided if in the non pregnant state one can maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly, practice yoga and avoiding smoking. If you have high blood pressure and want to get pregnant, see a doctor. The blood pressure should be controlled before the pregnancy. One has to check the condition of the kidney and heart before pregnancy.

Sometimes aspirin is prescribed early in pregnancy in high-risk conditions to prevent high blood pressure. In pregnancy, have a desired weight gain as advised by the doctor, exercise regularly, practice yoga, reduce stress and go for frequent checkups.

(Dr. Aneeta Talwar, Consultant - Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Manipal Hospital, Whitefield)

These days, a phone has become essential for everyone. It's not just for exchanging information; it's also commonly used for banking transactions and other needs. If such an important phone is lost or stolen, we naturally get anxious.

If someone steals your mobile, you can easily find it yourself... "Oh no, my phone is gone!" - This is heard in many homes, streets, and even police stations these days. The smartphone in hand is not just an object; it's our bank account, friends, relatives, office, entertainment, all combined into a small world. If such a phone is lost, we can only grieve. But with CEIR, it's possible to get it back easily.

CEIR - A digital watchman! CEIR stands for 'Central Equipment Identity Register'. It was created by the Indian Government's Telecommunications Department. It can be described as a digital watchman created to recover lost or stolen mobiles and to stop mobile theft.

Also Read | WhatsApp to let you BLOCK others from saving your photos and videos

IMEI - Mobile Aadhaar Number! Every mobile has a 15-digit IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number. This is like the mobile's Aadhaar number. Having this number makes it easy to file a complaint on the CEIR portal. How to find the IMEI number? It is on a sticker on the box the mobile came in. It is on a sticker where the mobile battery is located. If you have the mobile, dial *#06# and it will appear on the screen.

How to file a complaint through the CEIR portal?

Police Complaint: First, file a complaint at the nearest police station that the mobile is lost. Don't forget to take a copy of the FIR.

CEIR Portal: Go to the official website of the CEIR portal.

Filling in Details: Fill in the IMEI number of the lost mobile, the lost SIM card number, police complaint details, and your details correctly.

Also Read | ChatGPT can now create fake Aadhaar & PAN cards: A new cybercrime concern? SEE viral pics

OTP Verification: Enter the OTP that comes to your mobile number and verify your request.

Confirmation: Once your complaint is successfully registered, you will receive a reference ID. Keep it safe.

CEIR Portal Magic! As soon as a complaint is filed on the CEIR portal, your mobile will be blocked from being used on any network in India. This makes it impossible to sell the stolen mobile. This becomes a big headache for thieves.

What if the mobile is found? If the mobile is found, the block can be removed from the CEIR portal using the same reference ID and the mobile can be used. Don't worry about the lost mobile anymore. The CEIR portal will help you! This is a new technology. If used correctly, many mobiles can be recovered.

Revenge is not solely a human trait, according to a new study that suggests crows also have the ability to remember and retaliate against those who have harmed them. Research led by Professor John Marzluff, an environmental scientist at the University of Washington, indicates that crows can hold a grudge and seek revenge for up to 17 years.

Also Read: Struggling to find a girlfriend in India? Sex ratio may be why; check details

The study began in 2006 when Professor Marzluff sought to determine whether crows would retaliate. He conducted an experiment wearing a ogre mask while capturing seven crows with a net. After marking their wings for identification, he released them unharmed. Remarkably, the crows later sought out the individual who had captured them. Whenever Professor Marzluff appeared on campus wearing the mask, the crows would circle above and attack him.

"john marzluff, a professor... in an ogre mask, for science" th science regards crows + their grudgeshttps://t.co/My4C36vT5p pic.twitter.com/VwfpJulS0V
— karen (@tusenoch) October 29, 2024
To his surprise, other crows joined in the attacks, displaying aggression that lasted for about seven years. After 2013, the frequency of these attacks began to wane. Last September, 17 years after the initial experiment, Professor Marzluff donned the mask again, only to find that for the first time, the crows did not attack him.

Professor Marzluff is preparing to publish a research paper detailing the findings from his long-term study. His research revealed that crows possess a brain region similar to the amygdala in mammals, which is involved in processing emotions. He claims that crows are adept at observing human behaviour and can recognize individual human faces, enabling them to identify and remember perceived threats. Furthermore, Marzluff noted that crows can communicate this animosity to others in their flock, allowing for coordinated attacks against individuals they view as adversaries.

Also Read: Unhealthy fish combinations: Foods to avoid combining with fish

Amid heightened and rising tensions between two nuclear-armed neighbouring countries, India will conduct a series of mock drills across 259 locations on May 7. Coming just days after a dastardly terror attack in Pahalgam and in the wake of Pakistan’s recent missile tests under “Exercise INDUS,” the mock drills are a clear indication to reinforce internal readiness for worst-case scenarios, including airstrikes or full-scale warfare.

An official in the Union home ministry cited the reasons for conducting the mock drills across the country, including to train civilians, students, and others in civil defence techniques for protection during a hostile attack. The county will also check the readiness of control rooms and shadow control centres.

Sources in the ministry of home affairs said that the mock drills will be conducted in 244 categorised civil defence districts on Wednesday. “Such civil defence drills keep taking place in districts on a regular basis. But this time we are conducting across the country,” an official said.

The decision to hold mock drills for effective civil defence has been taken in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 that killed 26 Indian tourists in Jammu and Kashmir.

Full list of locations where mock drill states such as Delhi, West Bengal, and Punjab have a strong presence of active civil defence volunteers regularly engaged in civic duties, including traffic and crowd management. India's civil defence system operates primarily on a voluntary basis, supported by a small core of paid personnel, and is scaled up during emergencies.

Keep cash, torch, medical kits handy: How to be prepared

According to a Home Ministry statement, the drills will focus on how to respond to air raid sirens and blackout situations. Sources said citizens will be instructed to keep medical kits with extra supplies, torches, and candles at home.

As per sources, people will be advised to keep cash handy to navigate situations where mobile devices and digital transactions may fail.

A review meeting held in the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday assessed the condition of civil defence installations across 244 districts such as shelters, warning systems, and coordination facilities—are in working condition or require repairs.

Training for civilians will be a key component of the drills.

Why does this matter?

Amid rapid evolving geopolitical tensions between two nations, India has been emphasising the need for “optimum Civil Defence preparedness.”

The notification explicitly references the evolving nature of national security risks, stating that states must remain ready to handle emergencies like air raids, internal disruptions, or full-scale attacks.

An official said that this is the most expansive civilian defence mobilisation effort since the Cold War era, signaling a shift in India’s internal security posture.

What will the drill involve?

The mock drill will unfold across multiple levels, from districts to village clusters, and will simulate scenarios like air strikes, mass evacuations, and communication blackouts. Local administrations are expected to conduct these drills with public and institutional participation.

Key participants will include Civil Defence wardens, Home Guard volunteers (active and reservists), members of the NCC, NSS, NYKS, and students from schools and colleges.

Key measures to be tested

Air Raid Siren Activation: Designated towns will test their air raid warning systems to alert civilians in case of an aerial attack. This is aimed at ensuring that alert infrastructure is functional and can trigger swift public sheltering.

Civilian Training: Workshops and drills in schools and public institutions will focus on how civilians can react during a hostile event, covering everything from basic first aid to emergency evacuation steps.

Blackout Protocols: Cities and installations will undergo blackout exercises to test their ability to "go dark" in minutes. This includes turning off all lights and electronic signals to avoid detection by enemy reconnaissance.

Camouflage Exercises: Strategic installations, such as power stations, defence infrastructure, and communication hubs, will be camouflaged to assess how quickly and effectively such assets can be concealed from enemy targeting.

Evacuation Drills: Dry runs of evacuation plans will be held to identify flaws in existing procedures and to ensure smooth movement of people from high-risk zones to safer areas.

Key Implications:

Public Awareness: The involvement of educational institutions and public agencies helps normalize preparedness as a civic responsibility.

Inter-Agency Coordination: The drills will reveal how well local and central authorities can communicate and act in concert during emergencies.

Strategic Messaging: Holding such a large-scale drill just after a high-casualty terror attack and missile tests sends a calculated message to both domestic and foreign audience.

Gal Gadot, globally known for her iconic role as 'Wonder Woman,' recently shared her experience of playing an Evil Queen in Disney's remake of Snow White. She described her role as ''delicious' and explained how unique this role is from all of her other roles. She also said that it was challenging and exciting to play the villain, where she could explore a whole new perspective.

Gal Gadot talks about Evil Queen role:

Gal Gadot also worked on her singing skills, as the film is a musical, adding another layer to her in the film, more than just herself. Gal Gadot stated, "It was different than anything that I've ever done because I was playing the villain. She's so theatrical and so grand and bigger than life… It was a delicious role to play."

Gal Gadot explained how it felt as an actor to adapt to a whole new character and understand it as a whole process. She stated, "That's the fun part about what we do. To dig in to create all the history for the character and to understand how they operate—what triggers them, what they love, what scares them—it's something that takes you through a journey when you play a character. And I love it."

ALSO READ: Gal Gadot receives Hollywood Walk of Fame Star, celebrates with family

Gal Gadot is a mother of four girls, and she also revealed her children's adorable reactions. Talking about that experience, she revealed that she was not at all serious about it and it was totally unexpected. "When I went to Miss Israel in Israel, to begin with, I went for the experience and so I could tell my grandkids that Grandma ... and then I won, and that was shocking. I never meant to win; I came for fun, and all of a sudden—it's funny, you're 18, and you're not taking things very seriously. The only part that I enjoyed doing was the opening sequence with the dance."

The musical film Snow White, directed by Marc Webb, is all set to hit the big screens on March 22, 2025.

ALSO READ: Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal caught in fiery love triangle in 'Materialists' trailer

Fraudsters are using a phone's call merge feature to trick victims into revealing OTPs. They convince victims to merge calls, linking them to an OTP verification call from their bank, and then trick them into sharing the OTP.

Named the call merging scam, fraudsters are exploiting a phone’s call merge feature to steal one-time passwords (OTPs) and commit financial frauds. In order to obtain illegal access to bank accounts or other protected platforms, scammers utilize call merging to fool victims into unintentionally disclosing critical information, especially OTPs (one-time passwords).

The call merging scam takes use of a fundamental phone feature, in contrast to phishing scams that employ phony emails or websites. Numerous victims are unaware that it is fraud and unwittingly follow the scammer's directions.

How does the scam work?

A fraudster contacts you unexpectedly and says they obtained your number from a mutual acquaintance or another reliable source.

Request to merge Calls: They invite you to combine the call with another number, ostensibly that of a bank official or their "friend".

Linking to an OTP Call: After merging, your bank will unintentionally send you an automatic OTP verification call.

Tricking you into sharing OTP: By claiming that the OTP is required for verification, the fraudster persuades you to provide it.

How to protect yourself?

Never merge calls with unknown people: Refuse to merge calls with someone you don't know right away.

Verify caller identity: Use the bank's official customer service number to make a direct call to the bank if someone is claiming to be from it.

Banks never request OTPs over the phone: Requesting an OTP over the phone is a warning sign for fraud.

Report suspicious activity: Notify your bank and contact 1930, the national cybercrime helpline, right away if you receive an unexpected OTP for a transaction you did not conduct.

What to do if you feel you are the victim?

Take these quick actions if you think you may have been a victim of this scam:

Never divulge personal information or an OTP.

Report it to your bank and end the call.

To report the scam attempt, contact the cybercrime helpdesk at 1930.

Keep an eye out for any fraudulent transactions in your bank account.

Scams like fake customer support calls, SIM swap fraud, and phishing attacks also target OTPs and banking details. Stay alert and follow security best practices. By staying informed and cautious, you can protect yourself from falling victim to such scams.

Graduates in India must be paid a minimum salary of Rs 30,000! Will the Center issue the same rule for both government and private sectors?

Now, the central government is going to increase the minimum wage across the country. Will all institutions, whether government or private, now have a minimum salary of Rs 20,000? A new bill may be coming.

The price increase is straining the common man's stomach. Now, the Center may take such a decision to alleviate the country's financial crisis.

Millions of employees in India work for very low wages. There are also many employees whose remuneration is low compared to their labor. Now the government is on its way to bridge this gap.

According to sources, if this new bill comes, the minimum wage will be Rs 20,000. That is, no salary below Rs 20,000 can be given in government or private organizations.

According to sources, the bill will also include provisions for annual salary increases. The Modi government will also ensure that the salaries of those who receive high remuneration are not reduced.

Education can be judged in three slabs. Salaries will be given based on those three slabs. For example, a minimum of Rs 20,000 must be given to those who have passed higher secondary, and a graduate cannot be paid less than Rs 30,000.

If you have a postgraduate degree, the minimum salary will be Rs 35,000. It is learned from sources that the Modi government is going to bring such a bill.

However, the Modi government has not yet commented on whether this news is true or false. However, it is learned that this new bill may be passed this year if it is true.

From cramps to mood swings, the monthly cycle brings its own set of discomforts, making it a challenging experience for many women, particularly teenagers. Menstrual pain, or dysmenorrhea, is a common occurrence for many teenagers during their monthly cycles. However, there are ways to manage intense menstrual pain effectively, says Dr Prathima Reddy-Director & Lead Consultant, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, SPARSH Hospital, Bangalore.

Here are some tips for youngsters to effectively manage and alleviate menstrual pain.

#Stay Active: Engaging in light physical activity such as walking or gentle stretching eases menstrual discomfort by boosting blood circulation. This also helps release endorphins, a hormone that is the body's natural pain reliever.

#Healthy Diet: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins contributes to overall menstrual well-being. Moreover, incorporating specific foods like ginger, turmeric, and omega-3-rich food known for their anti-inflammatory properties may aid in alleviating menstrual discomfort.

Also Read: Jamai Sasthi 2024: 7 popular Bengali dishes to treat your son-in-law

#Hydration: Maintaining adequate hydration is crucial during menstruation as it can minimize bloating and relieve cramps. Consuming ample water helps in easing discomfort and ensuring the body remains hydrated.

#Heat Therapy: A heating pad or warm water bottle on the lower abdomen can relieve menstrual cramps considerably. Heat helps to relax the muscles and reduce tension, easing the pain associated with menstruation

Also Read: What is Congenital heart disease? Know major reasons, measures and precautions

#Relaxation Techniques: Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga can help reduce stress and tension, which may exacerbate menstrual pain. Incorporating these techniques into a daily routine can promote overall well-being.

#Quality Sleep: Getting adequate sleep is crucial for managing menstrual pain and overall health. Establishing a regular sleep schedule and creating a comfortable sleep environment can promote restful sleep during menstruation.

#Medication: Take medications only if the pain is intense and none of the above tips are not helping. If menstrual pain is severe or significantly impacts daily activities, it's essential to seek medical advice. A gynaecologist can evaluate symptoms, rule out underlying conditions, and recommend appropriate treatment options. It's essential to consult and seek doctors' advice before starting any medication regimen.

#Seek Support: Talking to friends, family members, or a healthcare provider about menstrual pain can provide emotional support and valuable insights into managing symptoms. Additionally, joining online support groups or forums can connect teenagers with others who may be experiencing similar challenges.

#Track Symptoms: Tracking menstrual cycles and associated symptoms can help teenagers identify patterns and better understand their bodies. Several period-tracking apps are available that can help monitor menstrual cycles, symptoms, and overall health.

Remember that every adolescent's experience with menstrual pain is different, so it is essential to find what works best for you and to prioritize self-care and well-being during your monthly cycle. Most importantly, parents should ensure adequate emotional and mental support, serving as the core source of strength for their child during that time of the month, concludes Dr Prathima Reddy.

From contributing to chronic conditions to influencing addictive behaviours, the detrimental effects of too much sugar extend beyond mere indulgence. Recognizing these hazards is crucial for individuals to make informed dietary choices and adopt healthier lifestyles

Sugar, once considered a rare treat, has become a ubiquitous and often overconsumed ingredient in our modern diets. From sugary beverages and candies to hidden sugars in processed foods, the average person's daily sugar intake has skyrocketed in recent decades. While a moderate amount of sugar is a natural part of a balanced diet, excessive sugar intake poses numerous hazards to our health.

Let us examine the various risks associated with consuming too much sugar and the impact it has on our overall well-being.

1. Weight Gain and Obesity: One of the most well-known hazards of excessive sugar intake is its link to weight gain and obesity. Sugary foods and beverages are often high in calories and low in nutritional value, leading to an imbalance in energy consumption. The body converts excess sugar into fat, contributing to the development of obesity. Moreover, sugary drinks, such as sodas, are particularly implicated in weight gain due to the rapid absorption of liquid calories.

2. Type 2 Diabetes: The relationship between excessive sugar consumption and the development of Type 2 diabetes is a growing concern. High sugar intake can lead to insulin resistance, a condition where the body's cells become less responsive to insulin. This resistance disrupts glucose regulation, contributing to elevated blood sugar levels and, ultimately, the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

3. Cardiovascular Health: Excessive sugar intake has detrimental effects on cardiovascular health. Consuming high amounts of added sugars has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and other cardiovascular conditions. It contributes to elevated blood pressure, inflammation, and unfavorable lipid profiles, all of which are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.

4. Dental Problems: Sugar is a primary contributor to dental issues, including cavities and gum disease. Bacteria in the mouth thrive on sugar, producing acids that erode tooth enamel. Over time, this erosion can lead to cavities, tooth decay, and other oral health problems. Additionally, sugary foods often lack the nutrients needed for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

5. Liver Disease: The liver plays a crucial role in metabolizing sugar. Excessive sugar intake, especially in the form of fructose found in high-fructose corn syrup, can overwhelm the liver's capacity to process it. This can result in the accumulation of fat in the liver, leading to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a condition associated with liver inflammation and impaired liver function.

6. Increased Cancer Risk: Emerging research suggests a potential link between excessive sugar intake and an increased risk of certain cancers. High sugar consumption may contribute to chronic inflammation and insulin resistance, both of which are associated with cancer development. While more research is needed to establish a definitive connection, reducing sugar intake may be a prudent strategy for cancer prevention.

7. Mental Health Impact: The hazards of excessive sugar intake extend beyond physical health to mental well-being. Studies have suggested a connection between high sugar consumption and an increased risk of mood disorders, including depression and anxiety. Fluctuations in blood sugar levels and the inflammatory effects of excess sugar may contribute to these mental health challenges.

8. Addiction and Cravings: Sugar has been described as addictive, with some studies comparing its effects on the brain to those of addictive substances. Excessive sugar consumption can lead to a cycle of cravings, overeating, and subsequent negative health effects. Breaking free from this cycle may require intentional efforts to reduce sugar intake and address underlying behavioural patterns.

In the face of these numerous hazards, it is crucial for individuals to be mindful of their sugar intake and make informed choices about their diet. Reading food labels, choosing whole, unprocessed foods, and being aware of hidden sugars in various products are essential steps toward reducing sugar consumption.

Moreover, public health initiatives and educational campaigns can play a vital role in raising awareness about the risks associated with excessive sugar intake, promoting healthier dietary habits, and fostering a culture of well-informed nutritional choices. Ultimately, by acknowledging and addressing the hazards of excessive sugar intake, individuals can take proactive steps towards safeguarding their health and well-being.

Married women can hold up to 500 grams of gold, unmarried women up to 250 grams, and men up to 100 grams. If this limit is exceeded, income tax proof must be provided.
Gifting and receiving gifts during happy occasions brings immeasurable joy. Especially when it comes to gold jewelry, the joy is doubled for both the giver and the receiver. In India, buying gold is a sentimental affair. Gold sales peak during various auspicious days like weddings, festivals, and New Year's. Gold jewelry is customary for all kinds of celebrations, including weddings and childbirth.Gold and gold jewelry are seen as a reliable and safe investment. Buying gold during festivals is considered auspicious. For safety, gold jewelry is usually kept in bank lockers, with a certain amount kept at home. Let's understand the limits for keeping gold jewelry at home as per income tax rules. Staying within the limits poses no problem, but exceeding them can lead to legal trouble.Parents gift gold jewelry to their daughters at the time of marriage, according to their capacity. Discussions about the amount of gold given often begin during pre-wedding arrangements. With gold coming from both families, there's a limit on how much a woman can keep at home. Married women can hold up to 500 grams of gold and gold jewelry at home.Unmarried women can hold up to 250 grams of gold and gold jewelry. Men can only keep 100 grams of gold at home. This limit is per person. If there are two married women in a household, they can hold up to one kilogram of gold. A married couple can hold up to 750 grams. If you possess gold beyond the prescribed limit, you must provide proof to income tax authorities. If you have proper purchase documents, there's no need to worry. However, if you lack receipts or tax payment documents for gold exceeding the limit, you might face problems. During an income tax raid or inquiry, you must prove the source of your gold with bills, inheritance documents, or legal declarations.PAN card is mandatory for cash purchases of gold over ₹2 lakhs. Transactions above ₹10,000 must be done through bank accounts. Always ask for a bill with your name and the price details.Bank lockers are available with annual fees. Court permission is needed for raids.Platforms like PhonePe and Paytm offer digital gold. It's legal and easy to track.Offered by the Reserve Bank of India.

Sleep disorders encompass a broad spectrum of conditions that disrupt the natural and restorative pattern of sleep. These disorders can have a profound impact on an individual's overall health, well-being, and daily functioning. Understanding the symptoms and treatment options for various sleep disorders is essential for those affected and for healthcare professionals tasked with their diagnosis and management.

I. Insomnia: Insomnia is one of the most prevalent sleep disorders, characterized by persistent difficulties in initiating or maintaining sleep. Individuals with insomnia often experience excessive daytime sleepiness, irritability, and difficulty in concentrating. The condition can manifest as difficulty falling asleep at the beginning of the night, frequent awakenings during the night, or waking up too early and being unable to resume sleep. Symptoms of insomnia include difficulty falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, waking up too early, daytime fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating

Treatment: Effective treatment for insomnia often involves a combination of behavioural and pharmacological approaches. Cognitive-behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is a widely recommended and evidence-based approach. CBT-I focuses on improving sleep hygiene, addressing maladaptive thoughts about sleep, and implementing relaxation techniques. Medications such as sedatives or hypnotics may be prescribed in some cases, but these are typically considered a short-term solution due to the potential for dependence.

II Sleep Apnea: Sleep apnea is a disorder characterized by interruptions in breathing during sleep. There are two main types: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central sleep apnea. OSA is more common and occurs when the muscles in the throat relax excessively, leading to a partial or complete blockage of the airway. Symptoms of sleep apnea include loud snoring, Pauses in breathing during sleep, gasping or choking during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness and morning headaches.

Treatment: The primary treatment for obstructive sleep apnea is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy. This involves wearing a mask over the nose or mouth that delivers a constant stream of air, preventing the airway from collapsing. Lifestyle changes, such as weight loss and positional therapy, can also be beneficial. In severe cases, surgical interventions to remove or reposition excess tissue may be considered.

III. Narcolepsy: Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by disruptions in the sleep-wake cycle. Individuals with narcolepsy often experience excessive daytime sleepiness and may have sudden episodes of muscle weakness or paralysis (cataplexy), hallucinations, and sleep paralysis. Symptoms of narcolepsy include excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy (sudden loss of muscle control), hallucinations and sleep paralysis.

Treatment: Stimulant medications, such as modafinil or amphetamines, are commonly prescribed to help individuals with narcolepsy stay awake during the day. Antidepressant medications, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), may be recommended to manage cataplexy. Consult your doctor before starting any medication.

IV. Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS): Restless Legs Syndrome is characterized by uncomfortable sensations in the legs, typically occurring during periods of inactivity or rest. Individuals with RLS often describe sensations such as tingling, crawling, or aching in the legs, which are relieved by movement. Symptoms of restless legs syndrome include uncomfortable sensations in the legs and restlessness.

Treatment: Management of RLS may involve medications such as dopamine agonists, anticonvulsants, or iron supplements. Lifestyle modifications, including avoiding caffeine and establishing a regular sleep routine, can also be beneficial. Identifying and addressing any underlying conditions contributing to RLS is an integral part of the treatment approach. Consult your doctor before starting any medication.

V. Circadian Rhythm Disorders: Circadian rhythm disorders involve disruptions in the body's internal clock, leading to difficulties in sleeping and waking at desired times. Common causes include shift work, jet lag, and irregular sleep schedules. Symptoms of circadian rhythm disorder include disturbed sleep-wake cycle, difficulty falling asleep or waking up at desired times and daytime sleepiness.

Treatment: Treatment strategies for circadian rhythm disorders aim to reset the internal clock. This may involve light therapy, where exposure to bright light is carefully timed to influence the circadian rhythm. Melatonin supplements, which can help regulate sleep-wake cycles, may also be recommended. Additionally, adopting consistent sleep schedules and practising good sleep hygiene are important aspects of managing circadian rhythm disorders. Consult your doctor before starting any medication.

VI. Parasomnias: Parasomnias are a group of sleep disorders characterized by abnormal behaviours or experiences during sleep. Examples include sleepwalking, night terrors, and talking during sleep. These episodes often occur during non-REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Symptoms of parasomnias include abnormal behaviour during sleep, sleepwalking, night terrors and talking during sleep,

Treatment: Management of parasomnias may involve implementing safety measures to prevent injury during episodes. In some cases, medications may be prescribed to reduce the frequency or intensity of parasomnia episodes. Identifying and addressing underlying factors, such as stress or sleep deprivation, is crucial for effective treatment. Consult your doctor before starting any medication.

Understanding the diverse landscape of sleep disorders is crucial for both individuals experiencing sleep-related difficulties and healthcare professionals involved in their care. The symptoms and treatment options vary widely, emphasizing the need for personalized and comprehensive approaches to address the unique challenges posed by each sleep disorder.

Seeking professional medical advice and intervention is essential for accurate diagnosis and the development of an effective treatment plan tailored to individual needs. Sleep plays a fundamental role in overall health and quality of life, making the management of sleep disorders a critical aspect of healthcare.

Revamped Control Centre

Your most-used functions, such as media playback, Home controls, and connectivity choices, will be easier to reach with the revamped Control Centre. Swiping between these groupings will be simple, and you may adjust the arrangement to your preference. This facilitates finding precise information on locations and media as well as rapidly grasping the main points of articles. To cut down on distractions, the revised Reader mode offers tables of contents and summaries for lengthy publications.

7. Privacy features

Additionally, iOS 18 included new privacy features that let you manage accessory connections, regulate contact sharing, and lock and hide applications without putting your device at needless danger.
Indian Railways has revised its auto-upgrade process for waitlisted tickets. Sleeper class tickets will no longer be upgraded to First AC, even if berths are available. This change aims to manage congestion in AC coaches.Until now, waitlisted tickets were upgraded to a higher class if seats were available. However, this facility will no longer be available.Under the new rules, waitlisted tickets will only be upgraded up to two classes higher. For instance, a sleeper class ticket can be upgraded to a maximum of Third AC or Second AC.Similarly, a Third AC (3A) waitlisted ticket can only be upgraded to First AC (1A). Previously, sleeper class or other lower class waitlisted tickets could be automatically upgraded to First AC (1A) based on seat availability. However, the auto-upgrade facility is only available to passengers who select the auto-upgrade option during ticket booking. If the passenger has not chosen the option, their ticket will not be upgraded.Even after the ticket is upgraded, the PNR number of the waitlisted ticket will remain the same. However, if the upgraded ticket is cancelled, the refund will be based on the fare of the original booking class (such as sleeper), not the upgraded class.According to IRCTC, the Center for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) is updating its software to implement this new rule. From May 1, the railways has introduced a new rule, according to which waitlisted passengers are no longer allowed to travel in sleeper or AC coaches.Passengers with waitlisted tickets are only eligible to travel in general class. If a passenger is caught traveling in sleeper or AC class, there is a provision for a fine and punishment.
