The fall was captured on the school’s CCTV camera system. The footage shows Varnika walking down the staircase before suddenly falling. Other students are seen trying to help her, while one appears to call a teacher. A teacher then checks on the girl and checks for injuries.

Police examine CCTV footage

Police are examining the CCTV footage to establish how the fall happened and what followed. Circle Inspector K Seetharam said the footage reportedly shows the girl losing her balance while using the stairs.

He also said no complaint had been lodged with police as of Friday night. Police are also checking whether Varnika had any pre-existing medical condition.

Family, school give different accounts

Varnika’s family alleged that the school management did not communicate properly after the accident. They claimed they were not informed promptly and were not given complete information, which they said delayed taking the child to hospital.

The school denied this. It said staff were waiting for Varnika’s father to arrive and that, when the child suddenly began vomiting, they immediately arranged a vehicle and took her to a nearby hospital, reported NDTV.

Police are continuing to examine the CCTV footage and other circumstances surrounding her death.

A 20-year-old engineering student in Telangana died after allegedly being forced to consume pesticide by a former lecturer. Investigators have alleged that the accused later made her write a suicide note in an attempt to make the death appear self-inflicted. The victim, Thandra Akshitarani, was studying mining engineering and had been undergoing training at a Singareni coal mine in Godavarikhani, Peddapalli district. What was initially treated as a suspected suicide later turned into a murder investigation.

Student's death initially treated as suicide

According to police, Akshitarani consumed pesticide on September 12 and was taken to a government hospital in Godavarikhani. She died while undergoing treatment the following day, according to a report by Hindustan.

A suicide note found in connection with the case initially led investigators to treat the incident as suicide. However, police later examined CCTV footage, call records and other technical evidence and alleged that the circumstances were very different.

Police subsequently arrested Jetti Naveen Kumar, an outsourced lecturer who had taught Akshitarani during her diploma studies. Another man, Bommakanti Ravi Kumar, a Singareni overman, was also arrested in connection with allegations of sexual assault involving Akshitarani.

Lecturer allegedly angry over another man

Akshitarani had studied at a Singareni polytechnic in Naspur, where she came into contact with Naveen Kumar. She later moved on to pursue a degree in mining engineering and joined a coal mine for training.

During her internship, she met Ravi Kumar, who worked as an overman at the mine. Police said Naveen became upset after learning that Akshitarani had grown close to Ravi.

According to Peddapalli DCP B Ram Reddy, this allegedly led Naveen to develop a grievance against both Akshitarani and Ravi. Police allege that the lecturer subsequently decided to kill the student.

Forced to write note and consume pesticide

Police said Naveen intercepted Akshitarani near FCI Crossroads in Godavarikhani on September 12 while she was returning home. He allegedly took her in his car and forced her to write a note accusing Ravi Kumar of sexual assault.

Investigators allege that Naveen then forced Akshitarani to consume pesticide. After she became unconscious, he allegedly used her phone to contact her father and informed him about her condition.

Police have also alleged that he delayed taking her for treatment before she was eventually admitted to hospital. Akshitarani died on September 13.

CCTV and call records helped police

The case began to change after investigators examined CCTV footage along the route, call detail records and other technical evidence. Police said these findings helped them identify Naveen as the alleged main accused.

Naveen was arrested in Godavarikhani, while Ravi Kumar was also taken into custody in connection with the separate sexual assault allegations. A car and two mobile phones were seized during the investigation.

The allegations against both men will be subject to the ongoing investigation and judicial process. Police are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding Akshitarani's death and the events leading up to it.

Even Petchiammal's child learnt the truth only years later. From shaving her head to learning to smoke beedis as part of the disguise, Muthu Master spent decades maintaining a male identity that she says gave her courage, respect and protection.

For nearly four decades, people in a small Tamil Nadu village knew Muthu Master as a quiet, hardworking man who wore a white shirt and dhoti, smoked beedis and took up physically demanding jobs in the fields.

Villagers respectfully called Muthu 'Annachi', a Tamil term commonly used for an elder brother. Few had any reason to question the identity of the person living alone in a small house near a temple in Kattunaickkanpatti village of Thoothukudi district.

But behind the name Muthu Master was a secret known only to a handful of people.

Muthu was born Petchiammal, a woman who began living as a man decades ago after widowhood, motherhood and a frightening encounter that left her worried about her safety.

For Petchiammal, the change was not simply about clothes or appearance. She has said it became a way to protect herself, earn a living and raise her daughter without constantly fearing harassment.

"This attire has given me dignity and helped me raise my daughter," she told the Times of India, looking back at the life she built as Muthu.

Husband died just 15 days after wedding

Petchiammal’s life changed dramatically when she was still very young.

According to the TOI report, she married her husband Shiva when she was around 20. But just 15 days after their wedding, Shiva died following a heart attack.

Soon afterwards, Petchiammal discovered that she was pregnant.

Suddenly widowed and expecting a child, she had to find a way to support herself. She later gave birth to a daughter and began working to provide for the two of them.

She took a job at a charcoal factory in Thoothukudi. The work was hard, but it gave her an income at a time when she had few options.

Then came an incident that she says changed the direction of her life completely.

Petchiammal recalled that she was walking towards the factory one evening when a truck driver stopped near her. She told TOI that the driver tried to force her into his vehicle. When she resisted, he abused her before eventually driving away.

Petchiammal managed to escape, but the incident left her terrified.

She said she spent that night at work repeatedly thinking about what had happened and questioning how she could protect herself while continuing to earn a living as a young widow.

By the next morning, she had made a decision.

Petchiammal went to a market and bought a shirt and dhoti. She then travelled to Tiruchendur, shaved her head and visited the temple.

When she came out, she was dressed as a man.

"That was the end of Petchiammal. I became Muthu," she said.

How Petchiammal became 'Muthu Master'

The name 'Master' was added later when Muthu began working at an eatery in Thoothukudi.

The name stayed, as did the male appearance.

Muthu later worked as a cook and moved to Chennai. After spending around three years there, Muthu returned to Thoothukudi district with her daughter and eventually settled in Kattunaickkanpatti.

The village did not know Petchiammal. It knew only Muthu Master.

There, Muthu began working as a farm labourer and became known for handling demanding physical jobs using tools such as a spade and axe.

The hard work helped Muthu earn respect among villagers. People began calling Muthu whenever labour was needed, and the identity remained largely unquestioned.

Petchiammal’s daughter, Shanmugasundari, also had an unusual childhood shaped by her mother’s circumstances.

Accounts about exactly when she learnt the full truth differ in the reports provided. One account says she came to know about her mother's identity when she was seven, while Shanmugasundari later told The New Indian Express that she had grown up in her aunt Laxmi’s house and moved in with her biological mother after her aunt died, when she was around 10.

"I grew up in my aunt Laxmi's house and I thought she was my mother," she told the publication.

After moving in with Petchiammal, the child also had to protect the secret.

Only close relatives and the daughter knew the truth, while most people around them continued to believe Muthu was a man.

Living as a man involved far more than changing clothes. Muthu also learnt to smoke beedis because she believed it helped make the disguise more convincing.

"The beedi has been a good cover for me," she told TOI.

She recalled once returning home late when a drunk man approached her. Muthu immediately lit a beedi. The man asked for a match and addressed Muthu as 'brother', apparently accepting the male appearance without question.

Such moments strengthened Petchiammal's belief that presenting herself as a man offered a level of protection she did not feel she had as a lone woman.

Still, maintaining the identity brought its own difficulties.

Public toilets, crowded spaces and situations where men were expected to remove their shirts required constant caution.

Muthu still visits the Tiruchendur temple, according to the report, but does not enter the sanctum because male devotees have to remove their shirts.

Hiding periods became another struggle

For years, Petchiammal also had to hide menstruation while working and living among people who believed she was a man.

She described it as difficult and said she had to remain especially careful every month.

She took tablets to manage pain and continued working so that nobody would suspect anything was different.

According to her account, menopause came early, at around 40.

For Petchiammal, all these difficulties were part of the choice she had made.

“When you make a choice, shouldn't you do everything it demands?” she said.

Her decision, she has repeatedly explained, was driven by survival rather than a wish to make a statement about gender identity.

She wanted to remain a widow, work and raise her daughter independently.

Looking back at the circumstances that forced her to change her life, Muthu has questioned the safety available to women living alone.

“What safety can society guarantee me? Where is the safety for women?” she asked in her conversation with TOI. She also questioned whether a woman who suffered harm would receive justice without first being blamed.

Those fears shaped decades of her life.

For Petchiammal, men's clothing became a form of protection in workplaces, on roads and in a society where she believed a lone widow was especially vulnerable.

What began as an emergency measure slowly became permanent.

Daughter calls her mother tough and independent

Today, Shanmugasundari runs a provision store in a nearby village. She remembers her mother's life as one long struggle.

"Life was a battle all along," she said, describing her mother as tough, independent and deeply committed to self-respect.

She said Petchiammal worked every day for her and rarely asked anything from her daughter in return.

Even after Shanmugasundari grew up, married and became settled, Petchiammal did not abandon the identity of Muthu Master.

After 37 years, it was no longer merely a disguise worn for immediate safety. It had become the life she knew.

Petchiammal has said she no longer plans to return to living publicly under her birth identity.

“Now, I want to continue living as Muthu till I die because this look gave me courage and protection when I was vulnerable,” she told The New Indian Express.

Her story is therefore not simply about a woman dressing as a man for decades.

It is also the story of a young widow who lost her husband weeks after marriage, raised a daughter while working difficult jobs, survived fear and harassment, and created a new identity because she believed it offered safety.

To the villagers around her, she was Muthu Master or Annachi (brother).

Behind that familiar figure was Petchiammal, a mother who says the identity she adopted to survive eventually gave her the dignity, independence and security she needed to build a life for herself and her daughter.

Woman falls under bus after collision

According to the details available, the TGSRTC bus collided with the Rapido bike while Hemadurga was travelling as a passenger.

TGSRTC driver taken into custody

Panjagutta Police reached the accident spot after being alerted. They shifted Hemadurga's body to the mortuary and began an investigation.

Police trace scooter using registration number

Following the circulation of the video, personnel from the Anna Nagar Traffic Investigation Wing began looking for those involved.

Police traced the scooter using its registration number and identified the three women as residents of Chetpet, Shenoy Nagar and Kolathur, according to a report by the Times of India.

Police said that the victim, A Karthikeyan, a resident of Kundrathur, was returning on his two-wheeler on Wednesday night after collecting Rs 12 lakh in cash from Parrys Corner when the crime took place. Police added that he had collected the money on the instructions of his uncle, who is based in Malaysia.

Gang intercepts bank employee on flyover

According to investigators, Karthikeyan kept Rs 1 lakh in his trouser pocket and placed the remaining Rs 11 lakh in a bag. As he travelled along GN Chetty Road and reached the Vani Mahal flyover, a group of men on motorcycles intercepted him.

Police said the attackers blocked his way and threatened him before snatching the bag containing Rs 11 lakh. Reports also said a laptop was taken. The Rs 1 lakh kept separately in Karthikeyan's pocket was not stolen.

Karthikeyan later approached Pondy Bazaar police and lodged a complaint. A case was registered and investigators began examining surveillance footage from roads, shops and buildings around the flyover.

A horrific road accident on the Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway in Karnataka’s Kolar district has left four people dead and another critically injured. The crash took place near Maragal in Bangarapet taluk on Wednesday. According to preliminary information, a speeding car lost control, slammed into the road divider and overturned. The impact badly damaged the vehicle, while those travelling inside were thrown onto the highway.

Four killed in high-speed crash

According to initial reports, three occupants died at the spot because of the impact. Another injured passenger reportedly died while being taken to hospital.

The remaining injured person was rushed to a hospital in Kolar and is said to be in critical condition. The injured passengers were initially taken to hospitals in Bangarapet and Kolar for emergency treatment.

The exact identities of those killed and injured have not yet been confirmed by police.

Victims reportedly from Pune

Preliminary information suggests that the occupants of the car were from Pune, Maharashtra. Police are now working to establish their identities and contact their families.

The condition of the surviving injured passenger remains critical, according to the initial information available.

The crash has once again raised concerns over accidents on the Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway, although the exact cause of this particular accident is yet to be established.

Bangarapet police begin probe

After receiving information about the crash, personnel from Bangarapet police reached the spot and began examining the accident site.

Police have registered a case at Bangarapet police station and are investigating the circumstances that led to the car losing control.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday launched the Thaaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam, or Maternal Uncle Gold Ring Scheme, for newborn babies in government healthcare facilities. The scheme provides a one-gram, 22-carat gold ring to eligible babies born in government hospitals and primary health centres across the state.

Vijay launched the scheme at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, where he personally presented gold rings to newborn babies and their mothers. The initiative is one of the key welfare promises made by Vijay ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election.

The state government has allocated Rs 755.83 crore annually for the scheme. It plans to procure 4,41,667 one-gram gold rings for distribution to eligible newborns. The first batch of 1,28,499 rings has already been procured.

What is the Thaaimaman Thanga Mothiram scheme?

The name Thaaimaman Thanga Mothiram refers to a traditional Tamil custom associated with the maternal uncle presenting gifts to a newborn. Under the government scheme, the state takes on that symbolic role by presenting a gold ring to babies born in government healthcare institutions.

The Tamil Nadu government's stated objectives are to honour motherhood, celebrate childbirth, promote maternal and child health and encourage more families to choose government hospitals and primary health centres for deliveries.

The scheme is applicable retrospectively to eligible babies born from June 22, 2026, which is also Vijay's birthday. The government has said the benefit is meant for babies born alive in government hospitals and primary health centres to eligible mothers who are permanent residents of Tamil Nadu.

Each eligible newborn will receive a one-gram, 22-carat gold ring. The rings carry a unique serial number and are supplied in tamper-proof packaging to improve accountability during distribution.

The government has planned the procurement in phases because thousands of babies are born in state-run healthcare facilities every month.

For the initial rollout, 1,28,499 rings were ordered for babies born during the period beginning June 22. The wider procurement target stands at 4,41,667 rings.

The rings are not simply handed out as an open cash-equivalent benefit. Their distribution is linked to the state's maternal and child health records, allowing officials to identify eligible beneficiaries and track the rings issued under the programme.

Who is eligible for the gold ring?

The scheme is primarily aimed at babies born in Tamil Nadu government hospitals and primary health centres.

According to the government notification, the programme covers babies born alive in government healthcare facilities from June 22, 2026, onwards. The mother must also meet the state's eligibility requirements, including being a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu.

The scheme is linked to the state's pregnancy and infant monitoring system. The baby's details and the mother's RCH identification number are used to maintain records and ensure that the benefit reaches the intended family.

For babies born between June 22 and the formal launch, arrangements have been made through designated hub centres for distribution. From the rollout of the scheme, eligible babies born in government hospitals are expected to receive the ring before leaving the facility with their mothers.

The scheme is also intended to encourage institutional deliveries in government facilities.

Tamil Nadu records around 7.8 lakh births every year, with about 4.2 lakh, or 53 per cent, taking place in government hospitals, according to government data cited in reports on the programme. The government wants to strengthen public confidence in these facilities and encourage more families to use them for childbirth.

Health Minister K G Arunraj has pointed to the difference in childbirth costs between government and private hospitals. According to data cited by the government from the NSS 80th round survey, the average cost of childbirth in a government hospital was around Rs 1,412, compared with approximately Rs 6,914 in a private facility.

The government has argued that greater use of public healthcare could therefore reduce the financial burden on families.

How will the rings be tracked?

Accountability is a key feature of the scheme. Each gold ring has a unique serial number and is linked to the mother's RCH identification number. The rings are also supplied in tamper-proof packaging. These measures are intended to help officials track procurement and distribution and prevent duplication or misuse.

The procurement process was handled through the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation. Government documents said tenders were invited for the larger requirement, with the first batch ordered for the initial period of implementation.

The gold ring scheme was among Vijay's election promises. It was subsequently incorporated into the state government's welfare plans after he took office.

The government initially planned to launch the scheme on September 15, coinciding with the birth anniversary of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C N Annadurai. The launch was later postponed, with September 28 fixed as the new date.

The first statewide rollout took place in Madurai on Monday. Vijay presented rings to newborns at Government Rajaji Hospital as the scheme formally began.

What happened at the Madurai launch?

At the launch event, Vijay held newborn babies and presented the gold rings to their families. He first gave the rings to 25 babies at the hospital auditorium before visiting the maternity ward, where he presented rings to another 10 newborns.

The launch was part of Vijay's first official visit to Madurai as Chief Minister.

He also inaugurated the restored Gandhi Memorial Museum at the historic Tamukkam Palace complex. The museum restoration was carried out at a cost of Rs 10.25 crore.

The gold ring programme, however, remained the central focus of the day's public event, marking the implementation of one of the government's most closely watched welfare promises.

For eligible families, the benefit is a small quantity of gold but carries a larger symbolic purpose. The government has presented the ring as a token marking the birth of a child and recognising the mother.

At the policy level, the scheme is also designed to connect welfare assistance with public healthcare. By making the benefit available to babies born in government facilities, the state hopes to encourage institutional deliveries and strengthen the use of its maternal healthcare network.

The incident, which was captured on video, unfolded after the woman began arguing with passengers and behaving aggressively during the journey.

She reportedly is heard telling passengers, “I am a woman who travels using a cab, why would I use a bus?” Passengers tried to calm her and asked her to provide her phone number or contact details of someone they could call.

However, she reportedly refused.

When another passenger questioned whether she considered her behaviour acceptable, she replied that it was. A man then claimed that the woman appeared to be drunk and alleged that she had also refused to take a ticket for the journey.

Situation turns physical inside MTC bus

The situation escalated when a male passenger tried to speak to her. The woman allegedly became aggressive and smacked him on the head.

Several passengers immediately surrounded her and tried to restrain her.

The confrontation intensified when another woman wearing a saree confronted her. During the heated exchange, the young woman allegedly grabbed the woman's hair and pulled it, causing further commotion inside the moving bus.

The driver and conductor eventually stopped the vehicle and removed the woman from the bus. Police were then informed about the incident.

Kumaran Nagar Police begin enquiry

Following the incident, videos of the woman's behaviour began circulating on social media. Kumaran Nagar Police are conducting an enquiry to establish the identity of the woman and determine what exactly happened on the bus.

The police are also expected to examine the available video footage and gather statements from passengers and MTC staff as part of the enquiry. Further details are awaited.
