Tamil Nadu's first full budget of the new government will be presented on August 5, followed by agricultural budget a day later. Ahead of the announcement, expectations are high over key election promises. Officials are studying the cost and rollout.

The upcoming Tamil Nadu State Budget for 2026-27 is scheduled to be presented on August 5, 2026, by Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson. It will be the first full budget of the new administration led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, making the announcement closely watched across the state.

The agricultural budget will be presented separately on August 6. The government also plans to table an audit report on alleged corruption during the previous administration.

In the Interim Budget 2026-27, the government had projected revenue receipts of Rs 3,44,575 crore. The state's own revenues are expected to make up 74.67% of the total revenue receipts, while the remaining 25.33% will come from the state's share of Central taxes and grants-in-aid from the Union Government.

Silent Star, Loud Victory: Why Vijay Has Not Spoken Yet Despite TVK Wave in Tamil Nadu

As this is the new government's first full budget, there is considerable interest in whether it will include some of its major election promises.

One of the biggest expectations is a possible increase in the monthly assistance provided to women under the 'Magalir Urimai Thogai' scheme. The assistance could reportedly be increased from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,500.

Another major promise being closely watched is free travel for women on all government buses across Tamil Nadu. If both proposals are announced, they could become two of the government's main welfare schemes.

Who Is N Marie Wilson, The First-Time MLA Handpicked By Vijay To Handle Tamil Nadu's Finance Portfolio?

Sources say the Transport Department has already held several meetings to work out a plan for a statewide free bus travel scheme for women.

Officials are reportedly examining how the existing benefit can be expanded beyond city buses. An official announcement is expected soon, raising the possibility that women could be allowed to travel free on all types of government buses.

Tamil Nadu currently has eight government transport corporations operating a total of 21,527 buses across the state. Providing free travel for women on all these buses was a key election promise, and the government is reportedly working towards fulfilling it.

If introduced, the scheme could directly benefit lakhs of women across Tamil Nadu.

Why Thalapathy Vijay Stayed Away From Bollywood Despite Being A Mega South Star

A high-level meeting was recently held at the Secretariat to discuss the proposed scheme.

Officials from the Transport and Finance departments reportedly discussed the financial impact of providing free travel and the practical details involved in implementing the plan.

The discussions also included the possibility of extending the benefit to express, deluxe and long-distance government buses, rather than limiting it to city services.

Tamil Nadu Election: MK Stalin Loses Kolathur As TVK's VS Babu Wins, Internet Erupts With Memes

Following the meeting, each of the eight government transport corporations is now preparing a detailed report for the state government.

The reports are expected to include details such as the number of buses operated by each corporation, daily passenger numbers and the additional funds that would be required to run the proposed scheme.

The government will take a final decision after examining these reports.

For now, all eyes are on the August 5 budget announcement, when the government is expected to clarify whether it will increase the 'Magalir Urimai Thogai' assistance to Rs 2,500 and introduce free travel for women across its government bus network.

'Consent Before Construction': Indian Praises South Korea Neighbour's Thoughtful Notice | Viral Video

A heartwarming video showing a man serving free meals outside government hospitals every morning has gone viral, with thousands praising his selfless effort.

Popularly known as the "Food Man", he reportedly prepares and serves nutritious meals to around 200 to 400 people every day before leaving for his regular corporate job. According to people sharing the video, he has been quietly carrying out this mission for more than ten years.

The video shows long queues of people waiting patiently as he serves freshly cooked rice and side dishes. Those receiving the meals include patients' family members, elderly people, women, security guards and others struggling outside public hospitals.
    View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Food Man (@foodman_hyd)

For many families, hospital visits can last several days, making daily food expenses an added burden. His simple act of providing a free meal has become a source of comfort for hundreds of people facing difficult times.

The inspiring clip has received thousands of positive reactions online, with many calling him a true unsung hero.

One doctor shared a thoughtful comment, saying that while patients receive medical attention, attendants are often forgotten. The doctor pointed out that many relatives spend days sleeping on hospital floors, eating whatever they can afford and living without basic facilities, making such food distribution extremely meaningful.
    View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Food Man (@foodman_hyd)

Another user wrote, "Your kindness is making a real difference.

India is likely to receive widespread pre-monsoon rainfall between May 29 and June 5, bringing possible relief from severe heatwave conditions. The southwest monsoon is still delayed over Kerala due to weak cloud activity.

After days of intense heat across large parts of the country, India may finally get some relief as pre-monsoon rainfall is expected to spread across nearly 80 to 90 percent of the country between May 29 and June 5. The expected rain becomes important as the southwest monsoon has still not reached Kerala, even though the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted its arrival around May 26.

A great start to the monsoon season is expected, with widespread pre-monsoon thunderstorms covering almost 80-90% of the Indian subcontinent from May 29 to June 5. This much-awaited rainfall will help reduce the summer intensity while we wait for the monsoon to progress. Image:… pic.twitter.com/0yyPqRFVfM

— All India Weather (@allindiaweather) May 26, 2026

Weather experts said weak cloud activity over the south-central Arabian Sea has slowed the monsoon’s progress. A cyclonic circulation in the region has reduced moisture and weakened rain-bearing clouds near Kerala. However, conditions are likely to improve within the next two to three days.

For the monsoon to officially enter Kerala, at least 14 selected weather stations in the state must receive 2.5 mm rainfall for two continuous days. So far, those conditions have not been fully met.

Bear with the heat till tomorrow afternoon. According to its forecast maps, heavy rain activity is likely over south India, eastern states, the northeast and regions near the Bay of Bengal during the coming week.

The forecast is based on satellite observations along with oceanic and atmospheric data.

While rain may soon bring relief to many regions, severe heat continues to affect northwestern, central and eastern parts of India.

Uttar Pradesh’s Banda remained the hottest city in the country on Tuesday with a maximum temperature of 47.4°C. It was the ninth straight day that the temperature crossed 47°C in the district.

Current temperatures as a dangerous heatwave continues to intensify across parts of India, with temperatures soaring to extreme levels:• Banda, Uttar Pradesh 47°C (116.6°F)• Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh 46°C (114.8°F)• Fatehabad, Haryana 46°C (114.8°F)• Sri Ganganagar,… pic.twitter.com/Gsz3wE2tCk

— Weather Monitor (@WeatherMonitors) May 27, 2026

Several other cities in Uttar Pradesh also recorded extreme temperatures. According to police, branch manager Harshin Singh had raised concerns about a malfunctioning lift in the commercial building where the bank operates. The building is owned by Kayalvizhi.

Police said the bank had repeatedly raised the lift issue through the building's representatives, but the problem was not resolved.

A special Pocso court in Tamil Nadu’s Tuticorin district has awarded a double death sentence to a 38-year-old man for the rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl. The verdict came just 75 days after the crime shocked the state. The court relied heavily on scientific evidence, including DNA reports and CCTV footage captured near a windmill farm, to convict the accused, identified as Dharmamuneeswaran, according to a report by the Times of India.

The judgment was delivered by Sessions Judge M Breetha on Monday after a fast-paced trial that concluded within eight weeks.

Girl Was Attacked After Leaving Home

According to investigators, the teenage girl had stepped out of her house in Vedanatham village on the evening of March 10 to answer nature’s call when she was attacked.

Police said Dharmamuneeswaran intercepted the girl, raped her and later murdered her before fleeing the area.

The case initially appeared difficult to solve as there were no direct witnesses or immediate clues linking anyone to the crime.

Windmill CCTV Became Major Breakthrough

Investigators later found a key lead through CCTV footage from a camera installed near a windmill farm close to the crime scene. Police analysed nearly 1,000 hours of footage collected from different locations between Vedanatham village and Tuticorin town. The footage showed the accused entering the village on a motorcycle around 2.30 pm on March 10 and leaving the next morning around 6.30 am.

Officials identified him through a checked shirt visible in the footage and tracked his movements further towards Tuticorin.

Police also found that the accused had switched off his mobile phone after entering the village. The phone became active again in Tuticorin shortly after he was seen leaving in the CCTV footage, helping police establish a timeline of events.

DNA Evidence Strengthened the Case

Forensic evidence played a major role in securing the conviction. According to police, blood samples found on the shirt worn by the accused matched the victim’s blood group. Semen samples collected during the post-mortem examination were also matched to the accused through DNA testing, the TOI report added.

Inspector General of Police Vijayendra S Bidari said the investigation was solved mainly through scientific evidence.

He described the DNA match as the “clinching proof” that helped police crack what was initially considered a blind case.

Stolen Bike and Previous Criminal History

Investigators also tracked the motorcycle used by the accused during the crime. Police said Dharmamuneeswaran had stolen the bike from Ramanathapuram district and later changed its number plate to avoid being caught.

Officials claimed the accused had visited the village several times earlier and had studied entry and exit routes before carrying out the crime.

Police records showed that the accused had earlier received a life sentence in a similar case, though the punishment had later been suspended by a local court.

The chargesheet in the case was filed within 21 days, while the trial began on May 5. A total of 17 witnesses were examined during the proceedings.

Special Public Prosecutor V Ellammal Kissinger said the court considered the accused’s criminal background before awarding the double death sentence.

Tamil Nadu is considering serving chicken biryani once a week in govt schools after teachers' unions raised the demand ahead of the state budget. Education Minister said the proposal is being examined. Unions also want permanent jobs for meal workers

Tamil Nadu could soon see a new item on the menu at government schools if a proposal to serve chicken biryani once a week gets the state government's approval.

The proposal was put forward by a group of more than 80 teachers' unions during a meeting with School Education Minister A Rajmohan ahead of the Tamil Nadu budget scheduled for August 5.

The unions have asked the government to improve the quality of rice served under the mid-day meal scheme and add chicken biryani to the menu once a week.

Rajmohan said the proposal was being considered. The government, however, has not taken a final decision yet. The matter also needs to be discussed with the Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department, which is involved in running the state's school meal programme.

'New APJ Abdul Kalam': Young Inventor Levin Paulose Creates Clever Home Gadgets, Wins Praise (WATCH)

During a meeting with the Education Minister ahead of the August 5 state budget, over 80 teachers' unions made a request. The demand is not only about adding a popular dish to the school menu.

Teachers' unions have argued that school meals should become more nutritious while also being attractive enough for children to eat regularly. They have asked for better-quality rice and a more varied menu.

The chicken biryani proposal has therefore become part of a wider set of demands linked to the state's school nutrition programmes.

Rajmohan also spoke about the history of school meals in Tamil Nadu and said successive governments had made their own additions to the programme.

He referred to former Chief Minister K Kamarajar's introduction of the school meal programme, followed by changes made during the governments of M Karunanidhi, M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa.

According to the minister, each political era had added something to the state's effort to provide food to schoolchildren.

Rajmohan said he too wanted to make an addition by introducing chicken biryani once a week.

The proposal has drawn attention because chicken biryani would be a very different addition to the regular school meal menu. However, at this stage, it remains a proposal rather than an approved policy.

'Best of America': Eric Trump Praises 16-Year-Old Lifeguard After Dramatic California Beach Rescue

The teachers' unions have also asked the government to extend the state's school meal programmes to students in Classes 11 and 12.

At present, the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme covers Classes 1 to 8 and serves around 32 lakh students. The Mid-Day Meal Scheme covers students up to Class 10 and reaches around 40 lakh children, according to the details shared during the meeting.

The unions want students in Classes 11 and 12 to be included as well.

If the proposal is accepted, around another 8 lakh students could come under the coverage of the two programmes.

That would mean a major expansion of the state's school nutrition network, particularly because older students would also receive support for meals during the school day.

The demand comes as Tamil Nadu continues to use school meals as an important part of its welfare and education policies.

Is The Paneer You Eat Safe? Jaipur Raid Finds 500 kg Suspected Adulterated Stock, Video Sparks Anger

Rajmohan also spoke about changes being considered for the existing breakfast programme.

The minister said the government was looking at ways to make the breakfast menu more nutritious and appealing to children.

At present, the allocation is around Rs 15 per student. Rajmohan said the government wants to move away from repetitive dishes such as wheat and rava upma and consider other food items.

The idea is to make the breakfast more varied while ensuring that it continues to meet the nutritional needs of schoolchildren.

The Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme was launched in September 2022 by the then DMK government to provide morning meals to primary school students. It was later renamed the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme.

The breakfast programme operates alongside the noon-meal system, giving many children access to two meals during the school day.

Uttarakhand Singer Nikhil Saklani's Jaagar Performance in Italy Leaves Foreigners Mesmerised (WATCH)

The teachers' unions have also raised concerns about the people who run the meal programmes.

They have asked that workers currently involved in the Mid-Day Meal Scheme also be given responsibility for the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme.

Another major demand is that these workers should be made permanent.

The request is aimed at providing greater job security to workers who are already involved in preparing and serving food to schoolchildren.

The government is expected to examine this demand along with the other requests raised by the unions.

Rajmohan said all the demands would be digitally recorded and reviewed department-wise. He also indicated that the government would try to find solutions to the issues as quickly as possible.

Kerala Man Stops in Heavy Rain to Clear Hidden Traffic Signal, Internet Calls Him a Real Hero (WATCH)

The meeting was not limited to school meals. The unions also raised concerns about teachers who are required to take the special Teacher Eligibility Test, or TET, following a Supreme Court order.

They sought relief for affected teachers and raised the issue of equal pay for secondary grade teachers.

More funds for school maintenance were also sought.

The demands cover several areas of school education, from teachers' salaries and examinations to infrastructure and student welfare.

The minister's response means the issues are now being examined by the relevant departments, although it remains unclear which demands will receive immediate approval.

Three of Rajkot Family Die By Suicide, Crime Branch Probe Sought Into Alleged Loan Pressure

Tamil Nadu's long history of school meals

Tamil Nadu has a long history of using school meals as a way to support children's nutrition and encourage school attendance.

Kamarajar introduced a school meal programme in the state in 1956. Over the years, successive governments changed and expanded the programme by adding new food items and increasing its reach.

The state's approach later became an example often discussed in connection with school nutrition programmes in India.

The breakfast scheme added another layer to this system in 2022. Its aim was to ensure that children, particularly those in primary classes, did not begin their school day without food.

The expansion of these schemes has also linked education policy with wider welfare goals.

For many families, school meals can reduce the daily cost of feeding children while ensuring that students receive at least some nutritious food during school hours.

As of now, there is no confirmed date for chicken biryani to be included in government school meal plan.

The proposal is still being examined by the Tamil Nadu government and will need discussions between the departments concerned before a final decision can be taken. If approved, the weekly chicken biryani plan would become one of the more noticeable changes to Tamil Nadu's school meal menu in recent years.

She Dreamed Of Becoming A Doctor: NEET Aspirant's Death Renews Questions Over Exam Stress

An 18-year-old Intermediate student in Telangana's Jogulamba Gadwal district allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday, with his family accusing a teacher of humiliating and slapping him over his examination performance. The student, identified as Tarun from Kothapalli village in Gadwal mandal, was studying in the second year at Government Junior College, Gadwal. He had scored 434 out of 440 marks in his first-year Intermediate examinations, according to his elder brother's complaint. Police have booked the teacher for alleged abetment to suicide following the family's complaint. An investigation is now underway.

'One Officer, One Official Car': Why Centre Barred Extra Vehicles For Officers Holding Additional Charge

Family alleges repeated humiliation

According to the complaint, as reported by the Times of India, Tarun was a bright student and had secured 434 marks, just one mark behind another student who scored 435.

The family alleged that a lecturer repeatedly praised the other student while criticising Tarun over the difference in their marks. They further alleged that the teacher humiliated him in front of other students and staff.

The complaint states that the incident became particularly serious on July 27. Tarun allegedly questioned the teacher after being criticised, following which the teacher allegedly slapped him.

His brother, T Mohan, alleged that the incident left Tarun deeply distressed. The family said he had stopped attending college for the two days before his death.

The allegations have not been independently established, and police are investigating the circumstances.

Three of Rajkot Family Die By Suicide, Crime Branch Probe Sought Into Alleged Loan Pressure

Family discovered Tarun at home

On Tuesday, Tarun did not go to college. His parents went to a temple in the afternoon, while his elder brother went to his in-laws' house, according to the complaint.

When his parents returned home at around 4pm, they found that the main door was locked from inside. Tarun did not respond when they called out to him.

The family then sought help from a 15-year-old relative from the neighbourhood, who entered the house through an opening in the roof and opened the door from inside.

The family found Tarun dead inside the house. Police were informed and reached the spot. His body was sent for a post-mortem examination and was later handed over to his family.

'New APJ Abdul Kalam': Young Inventor Levin Paulose Creates Clever Home Gadgets, Wins Praise (WATCH)

Suicide note mentions alleged incident

Police said Tarun left behind a two-page note, which has since circulated on social media. According to the family, the note referred to the alleged incident at the college and described the distress he had experienced.

The alleged contents of the note have led to an outpouring of grief and anger online, with many people questioning the treatment of students and the pressure they can face over academic performance.

However, the contents of a suicide note and allegations made by a family require investigation before responsibility can be established.

'Best of America': Eric Trump Praises 16-Year-Old Lifeguard After Dramatic California Beach Rescue

Teacher booked under BNS

Based on the complaint filed by Tarun's brother, Gadwal Rural Police registered a case against the teacher under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with abetment of suicide.

Gadwal Circle Inspector T Sreenu said police were examining the allegations and that further legal action would follow the preliminary investigation.

The investigation will establish what happened at the college, whether the alleged assault and humiliation took place and what circumstances preceded Tarun's death.

The case has also renewed attention on the pressure faced by students over academic results, particularly when small differences in marks become a source of comparison.

Tarun's family is now seeking action against the teacher, while police continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the teenager's death.

(Suicide is never a solution.

Nearly nine months after a young Indian woman was found dead inside her apartment in Washington state, US police have arrested her husband, alleging he murdered her and tried to make the death appear suspicious but unrelated to him. Avinash Narne, a 30-year-old software development engineer from Telangana, has been charged with the murder of his 27-year-old wife, Raajitha Sabbineni.

Investigators believe the killing was planned and say evidence gathered over several months points to deliberate strangulation followed by an attempt to mislead investigators. If convicted, Narne could face life imprisonment under Washington state law. He is currently being held on a USD 5 million (around Rs 48 crore) bail.

#BREAKING:Telugu guy Avinash Narne accused of murdering his 27-yr-old wife Raajitha Sabbineni, has pleaded not guilty. He is now in Jail on $5 million bail. He claimed his wife had locked herself inside the bathroom and was not responding.

Officers forced open the bathroom door and found Sabbineni lying on the floor. She was declared dead at the scene, just months after the couple got married.

An autopsy later concluded that she had died from asphyxia caused by strangulation. Medical examiners officially ruled the death a homicide, prompting detectives to launch a detailed investigation.

Mother Watches in Horror As Baby Falls Down Stairs After Nanny Sleeps Through Cries | Viral Video

Digital evidence challenged husband's version

According to investigators, Narne told police he had stepped out of the apartment for around 40 minutes to run errands and returned to find the bathroom locked.

However, detectives examined data from the apartment's smart-lock system and front-door security records. The digital evidence reportedly showed that although Narne briefly left the apartment, no one else entered or left during that period.

Police said this ruled out the possibility of an unknown intruder entering the home while Narne was away.

The investigation then shifted towards Narne's personal life and communications.

Alleged affair became key part of investigation

Court documents allege that Narne had been involved in a secret relationship with another woman in India even before marrying Sabbineni. Investigators claim the relationship continued after the wedding and that the woman had attended the couple's marriage ceremony.

Police said phone records showed Narne spoke to the woman several times on the day of his wife's death, including around the time he claimed he was trying to enter the locked bathroom.

Investigators also alleged that Narne admitted sending the woman a photograph of Sabbineni's body the day after her death, a claim that has drawn widespread attention.

Real-life Spider-Man Rescues Family From Waterlogged Pothole in Bhiwandi, Video Goes Viral (WATCH)

Messages raised fresh questions

Detectives also examined messages exchanged between the couple in the weeks before Sabbineni died.

According to charging documents, Sabbineni had repeatedly told her husband that drinks he prepared tasted unusually bitter. On the day of her death, she reportedly messaged him saying a smoothie tasted like "medicine" and "cough syrup".

Police have not publicly stated whether those messages are linked to the cause of death, but they form part of the evidence collected during the investigation.

After months of reviewing forensic findings, digital records and witness statements, Bellevue Police arrested Narne. On July 1, prosecutors formally charged him with first-degree murder, alleging that the killing was intentional and premeditated. The case will now proceed through the Washington court system.

He Trains With a Pillow Tied to a Cylinder, Guards Parking Lots at Night, but Refuses to Give Up on His MMA Dream
