India is likely to receive widespread pre-monsoon rainfall between May 29 and June 5, bringing possible relief from severe heatwave conditions. The southwest monsoon is still delayed over Kerala due to weak cloud activity.

After days of intense heat across large parts of the country, India may finally get some relief as pre-monsoon rainfall is expected to spread across nearly 80 to 90 percent of the country between May 29 and June 5. The expected rain becomes important as the southwest monsoon has still not reached Kerala, even though the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted its arrival around May 26.

Weather experts said weak cloud activity over the south-central Arabian Sea has slowed the monsoon’s progress. A cyclonic circulation in the region has reduced moisture and weakened rain-bearing clouds near Kerala. However, conditions are likely to improve within the next two to three days.

For the monsoon to officially enter Kerala, at least 14 selected weather stations in the state must receive 2.5 mm rainfall for two continuous days. So far, those conditions have not been fully met.

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has also released a fresh rainfall outlook for the next 15 days. According to its forecast maps, heavy rain activity is likely over south India, eastern states, the northeast and regions near the Bay of Bengal during the coming week.

The forecast is based on satellite observations along with oceanic and atmospheric data.

While rain may soon bring relief to many regions, severe heat continues to affect northwestern, central and eastern parts of India.

Uttar Pradesh’s Banda remained the hottest city in the country on Tuesday with a maximum temperature of 47.4°C. It was the ninth straight day that the temperature crossed 47°C in the district.

Several other cities in Uttar Pradesh also recorded extreme temperatures. Orai touched 45.8°C, Jhansi 45.5°C, Prayagraj 45.4°C, Agra 45.3°C and Hamirpur 45.2°C.

In Rajasthan, Sri Ganganagar recorded 47°C, making it the second hottest city in India. Bikaner and Phalodi both recorded 46°C, while Jaisalmer touched 45.6°C. Jaipur also remained hot at 43.2°C.

Many districts in Maharashtra continued to face extreme heat. Brahmapuri recorded 46.6°C, which was 3.5 degrees above normal. Chandrapur saw 46.4°C, Wardha 46°C, Nagpur’s Sonegaon area 45.5°C and Gondia 45.2°C.

In Haryana, Sirsa recorded 46°C and Rohtak 45.6°C. Punjab’s Bathinda reached 45.8°C.

Delhi also remained hotter than usual, with the maximum temperature touching 43.5°C, around 3 degrees above normal.

The IMD has issued heatwave alerts for parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Odisha, Punjab, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh on May 28.

At the same time, thunderstorms, strong winds and even hailstorms are expected in parts of Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi.

Several states, including Bihar, West Bengal, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, may witness strong winds blowing at speeds of 50 to 70 kmph along with light rain in some areas.

Weather officials said temperatures may fall by 3°C to 7°C in many northern states from May 29 onwards.

The deceased has been identified as Renuka, a resident of Alwal. According to police, she was married, had a child and worked at a restaurant and pub in Hyderabad. Investigators said Renuka checked into the hotel with a man at around 3 am on Wednesday. The man reportedly left the hotel at about 10.30 pm on Thursday, while she remained in the room.

Langar Houz Sub-Inspector Syed Munwar Ali said the exact reason behind the woman's death would be known only after the investigation is completed.

According to police, as quoted by NDTV report, the accused first booked a Rapido bike and travelled with Lakshmi towards Thimmapur village. As the area remained busy with traffic and CCTV surveillance, he allegedly shifted her onto his own motorcycle and took her to a deserted road near Nustulapur.

Investigators said the man then robbed Lakshmi of around five grams of gold jewellery, silver anklets weighing about 20 grams and cash.

Police believe the accused decided to kill her to ensure there were no witnesses left who could identify him.

Police formed a special investigation team after Lakshmi's rescue. Officers analysed Rapido booking records, CCTV footage and mobile phone data to trace the suspect.

The accused was identified as 21-year-old Dhamma Dinesh Reddy. During questioning, police said he confessed to the crime.

Investigators also recovered the stolen jewellery after learning that it had allegedly been sold to a jewellery trader. Police arrested the trader as well for allegedly receiving stolen property.

According to investigators, Dinesh Reddy had lost nearly Rs 4 lakh through online gambling, betting platforms and loan applications. Burdened by mounting debt, he allegedly planned the robbery to arrange money.

Police have arrested the accused and produced him before a court. The investigation is continuing.

A special Pocso court in Tamil Nadu’s Tuticorin district has awarded a double death sentence to a 38-year-old man for the rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl. The verdict came just 75 days after the crime shocked the state. The court relied heavily on scientific evidence, including DNA reports and CCTV footage captured near a windmill farm, to convict the accused, identified as Dharmamuneeswaran, according to a report by the Times of India.

The judgment was delivered by Sessions Judge M Breetha on Monday after a fast-paced trial that concluded within eight weeks.

Girl Was Attacked After Leaving Home

According to investigators, the teenage girl had stepped out of her house in Vedanatham village on the evening of March 10 to answer nature’s call when she was attacked.

Police said Dharmamuneeswaran intercepted the girl, raped her and later murdered her before fleeing the area.

The case initially appeared difficult to solve as there were no direct witnesses or immediate clues linking anyone to the crime.

Windmill CCTV Became Major Breakthrough

Investigators later found a key lead through CCTV footage from a camera installed near a windmill farm close to the crime scene. Police analysed nearly 1,000 hours of footage collected from different locations between Vedanatham village and Tuticorin town. The footage showed the accused entering the village on a motorcycle around 2.30 pm on March 10 and leaving the next morning around 6.30 am.

Officials identified him through a checked shirt visible in the footage and tracked his movements further towards Tuticorin.

Police also found that the accused had switched off his mobile phone after entering the village. The phone became active again in Tuticorin shortly after he was seen leaving in the CCTV footage, helping police establish a timeline of events.

DNA Evidence Strengthened the Case

Forensic evidence played a major role in securing the conviction. According to police, blood samples found on the shirt worn by the accused matched the victim’s blood group. Semen samples collected during the post-mortem examination were also matched to the accused through DNA testing, the TOI report added.

Inspector General of Police Vijayendra S Bidari said the investigation was solved mainly through scientific evidence.

He described the DNA match as the “clinching proof” that helped police crack what was initially considered a blind case.

Stolen Bike and Previous Criminal History

Investigators also tracked the motorcycle used by the accused during the crime. Police said Dharmamuneeswaran had stolen the bike from Ramanathapuram district and later changed its number plate to avoid being caught.

Officials claimed the accused had visited the village several times earlier and had studied entry and exit routes before carrying out the crime.

Police records showed that the accused had earlier received a life sentence in a similar case, though the punishment had later been suspended by a local court.

The chargesheet in the case was filed within 21 days, while the trial began on May 5. A total of 17 witnesses were examined during the proceedings.

The unions want students in Classes 11 and 12 to be included as well.

If the proposal is accepted, around another 8 lakh students could come under the coverage of the two programmes.

That would mean a major expansion of the state's school nutrition network, particularly because older students would also receive support for meals during the school day.

The demand comes as Tamil Nadu continues to use school meals as an important part of its welfare and education policies.

The idea is to make the breakfast more varied while ensuring that it continues to meet the nutritional needs of schoolchildren.

The Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme was launched in September 2022 by the then DMK government to provide morning meals to primary school students. It was later renamed the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme.

The investigation will establish what happened at the college, whether the alleged assault and humiliation took place and what circumstances preceded Tarun's death.

The case has also renewed attention on the pressure faced by students over academic results, particularly when small differences in marks become a source of comparison.

Nearly nine months after a young Indian woman was found dead inside her apartment in Washington state, US police have arrested her husband, alleging he murdered her and tried to make the death appear suspicious but unrelated to him. Avinash Narne, a 30-year-old software development engineer from Telangana, has been charged with the murder of his 27-year-old wife, Raajitha Sabbineni.

Investigators believe the killing was planned and say evidence gathered over several months points to deliberate strangulation followed by an attempt to mislead investigators. If convicted, Narne could face life imprisonment under Washington state law. He is currently being held on a USD 5 million (around Rs 48 crore) bail.

Wife found dead inside bathroom

The case began in October 2025 when Bellevue Police received an emergency call from Narne. He claimed his wife had locked herself inside the bathroom and was not responding.

Officers forced open the bathroom door and found Sabbineni lying on the floor. She was declared dead at the scene, just months after the couple got married.

An autopsy later concluded that she had died from asphyxia caused by strangulation. Medical examiners officially ruled the death a homicide, prompting detectives to launch a detailed investigation.

Digital evidence challenged husband's version

According to investigators, Narne told police he had stepped out of the apartment for around 40 minutes to run errands and returned to find the bathroom locked.

However, detectives examined data from the apartment's smart-lock system and front-door security records. The digital evidence reportedly showed that although Narne briefly left the apartment, no one else entered or left during that period.

Police said this ruled out the possibility of an unknown intruder entering the home while Narne was away.

The investigation then shifted towards Narne's personal life and communications.

Alleged affair became key part of investigation

Court documents allege that Narne had been involved in a secret relationship with another woman in India even before marrying Sabbineni. Investigators claim the relationship continued after the wedding and that the woman had attended the couple's marriage ceremony.

Police said phone records showed Narne spoke to the woman several times on the day of his wife's death, including around the time he claimed he was trying to enter the locked bathroom.

Investigators also alleged that Narne admitted sending the woman a photograph of Sabbineni's body the day after her death, a claim that has drawn widespread attention.

Messages raised fresh questions

Detectives also examined messages exchanged between the couple in the weeks before Sabbineni died.

According to charging documents, Sabbineni had repeatedly told her husband that drinks he prepared tasted unusually bitter. On the day of her death, she reportedly messaged him saying a smoothie tasted like "medicine" and "cough syrup".

Police have not publicly stated whether those messages are linked to the cause of death, but they form part of the evidence collected during the investigation.

After months of reviewing forensic findings, digital records and witness statements, Bellevue Police arrested Narne. On July 1, prosecutors formally charged him with first-degree murder, alleging that the killing was intentional and premeditated. The case will now proceed through the Washington court system.

CCTV shows how the theft happened

According to the CCTV footage, one of the women reached towards the jewellery displayed on the shelves while the other members kept the shop staff occupied. She allegedly picked up the gold chain and placed it inside a bag.

The group then left the shop without raising suspicion among the staff at the time. The theft is believed to have taken place at around 1:30 pm on August 6.

However, the staff did not realise that the chain was missing immediately. They checked the CCTV footage at around 6 pm and noticed the suspected theft, Tandur Circle Inspector B Parameshwar told Siasat.com.

Police begin investigation

Following the incident, police registered a theft case under Section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. An investigation is now underway to identify and trace the members of the gang.

The accused are currently absconding, police said. Investigators are examining the CCTV footage and other available evidence to establish the identities of those involved and trace the stolen gold chain.

The CCTV footage of the incident has since surfaced on social media, drawing attention to the manner in which the group allegedly distracted the jewellery shop staff before making away with the gold chain.

Unable to bear the pain any longer, Bhavani reportedly stood beside her hospital bed and gave birth before any member of the medical staff reached her.

Hospital authorities denied the allegations and said Bhavani had not informed doctors or nurses that she had entered active labour.

According to the hospital, staff would have immediately shifted her for delivery had they been alerted in time. Officials added that both the mother and the newborn received treatment after the incident and that the baby's condition was being closely monitored.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case. The allegations of medical negligence remain under inquiry.
