The Commonwealth Games 2026 is taking place in Glasgow, Scotland. The 23rd edition of the quadrennial multi-sport event runs from July 23 to August 2, 2026, where more than 3000 athletes from 74 nations and territories compete across a streamlined program of 10 core sports.

The CWG 2026 was supposed to take place in Victoria, Australia, but the event was shifted to Glasgow after the Australian state withdrew in July 2023 due to soaring projected costs that blew out from an initial estimate of AUD 2.6 billion to more than AUD 6 billion. Glasgow stepped in after reaching an agreement with Commonwealth Sport to host a scaled-down edition of the Games, using existing venues and infrastructure to keep costs under control.

From India, 125 athletes across 13 sports disciplines (including para-sports), featuring 77 male and 48 female competitors, will participate in the event. Neeraj Chopra, Mirabai Chanu, and Lovlina Borgohain will headline India's contingent as the country aims for a strong medal haul at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Why Are Five Major Sports Not Part of CWG 2026?

As Commonwealth Games 2026 organizers were forced to radically restructure the event following the unexpected withdrawal of the original host state of Victoria due to soaring financial blowouts, Glasgow stepped in with a strict, budget-conscious rescue plan. Initially, CWG was 19-sport lineup.

However, the soaring project costs and the resulting emergency rescue bid by Glasgow necessitated a dramatically reduced program, dropping sports that require new venue setups and sport-specific turf installations, and instead relying on existing, locally available facilities within the streamlined four-venue infrastructure.

Since cricket, hockey, wrestling, badminton and table tennis require specialised venues, dedicated infrastructure or multiple competition fields, they were excluded from Glasgow's scaled-down four-venue model. Their omission was aimed at keeping the Commonwealth Games 2026 financially sustainable, logistically manageable and focused on using existing facilities.

Cricket and hockey require dedicated outdoor turf fields and sprawling stadium complexes, whereas badminton, wrestling, and table tennis demand extensive indoor court configurations, specialised flooring, or multi-arena training setups that could not be accommodated within Glasgow's strictly condensed four-venue footprint.

If these five sports were integrated, the cost of players’ accommodation would skyrocket due to the need to expand athlete villages across multiple distant locations, violating a core mandate of utilising a single, centralised, and existing accommodation footprint to ensure the entire rescue budget remained intact.

How Did India Perform at Commonwealth Games?

Despite the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 being scaled down to a 10-sport event, India has sent a streamlined 125-strong contingent across 13 disciplines (including para-sports). The CWG has been India’s strongest hunting ground for medals in recent editions of the quadrennial multi-sport event.

Since its participation at the CWG in 1934, except in 1950, 1962, and 1986, when it sat out the event, India has won 564 medals, including 203 gold, 190 silver, and 171 bronze. Their best medal haul in the 2010 edition of the Commonwealth Games, where they achieved the highest medal tally on home soil, winning 101 medals, including 38 gold, cementing the nation's status as a dominant powerhouse in the history of the competition.

In the Birmingham CWG 2022, India won 61 medals in total, consisting of 22 gold, 16 silver, and 23 bronze medals, finishing fourth in the overall medal standings. Arun was supposed to compete for India in the men's 73 kg category. The action was taken after banned substances were found in his system during the pre-event test.

IJF Confirms Indian Judoka's Ineligibility After Anti-Doping Report

The International Judo Federation took this tough decision based on a report from our own National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). They have informed the Games organisers and the Indian Olympic Association.

Following this, Arun's name has been removed from the official entry system for the Commonwealth Games. Elise Anderson, a representative for the Games organising committee, also confirmed that Arun Kumar is not eligible to compete in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and has been completely excluded from the events.

Arun Kumar was one of India's biggest medal hopes in judo. The fact that another player cannot be sent as a replacement at such short notice makes this blow even bigger. Arun has been given 15 days to explain his side of the story.

However, under the current anti-doping rules, he cannot participate in the Games. 'Technically, it's impossible to bring in another player as a replacement in such a short time. We had high hopes for Arun, and what has happened is very unfortunate,' said Mukesh Kumar, the President of the Judo Federation of India.

Who Is Arun Kumar?

Arun Kumar hails from Najafgarh, Delhi, and has been a professional judoka representing India in the men's 73 kg category. The 21-year-old is an Indian Army Havildar and has trained at Inspire Institute of Sport, which is owned by founded by the JSW Group, headed by founder and director Parth Jindal.

Arun first shot to national fame when he won the gold medal at the 2023 Asian Junior Championship in Macau. In 2025, he clinched a gold medal at the Taipei Asian Open, followed by a string of strong international performances that established him as one of India's leading medal contenders in the sport.

Arun Kumar secured a bronze medal at theHong Kong Asian Open and also finished seventh at the Tashkent Grand Slam. In the ongoing Commonwealth Games, Arun was one of the strong medal contenders for India. Indian badminton star PV Sindhu has called out the organisers of the ongoing China Open 2026 over unequal tournament scheduling and recovery time disparities following a hard-fought defeat in the round of 16 clash against Chen Yufei of China on Thursday, July 23.

Sindhu’s campaign came to an end after a three-set defeat - 21–16, 20–22, 18–21 in a grueling encounter against Chen in the pre-quarterfinal clash. The two-time Olympic medalist recently became the first Indian badminton player to win the Japan Open. However, the 31-year-old’s momentum was halted in Changzhou after a close match where she fell just short in the decider.

Before the round of 16 defeat, PV Sindhu defeated compatriot Unnati Hooda in a three-set victory in the round of 32, but her run ultimately concluded against the home favourite in a match where scheduling and recovery time became a major talking point.

In contrast, Chen Yufei enjoyed a full day off and over 24 hours of recovery time before the Chinese player’s quarterfinal clash against Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand. She shared the screenshot of Chen’s match schedule to drive home her point.

"About 16 hours for me between matches. 24+ hours for my dear friend Chen tomorrow after having a full day off before facing me today,” Sindhu wrote.

“Lovely to see recovery being given the importance it deserves. Funny how schedules have a way of taking care of recovery. I only wish they took care of everyone the same way," she added.

Speaking on the sidelines of the tournament to Jio Hotstar, Deepti Sharma highlighted the mental fortitude and calmness that define Novak Djokovic and MS Dhoni, who are often regarded as two of the greatest competitors in their respective sports for thriving under pressure.

“When you talk about Djokovic, everyone speaks about his mental strength. He is someone who never gives up, no matter how tough the situation is,” the India all-rounder said.

“In cricket, I think MS Dhoni sir is very similar. He is known for being very cool and calm. Whenever pressure situations come, he handles them really well. It never looks like he is in a difficult situation. He handles pressure so easily.

“Both Djokovic and Dhoni have that rare quality of staying calm and strong when it matters the most. Watching them, we learn how to stay calm and find a way out of tough situations," she added.

“My favourite is Djokovic. I follow his game very closely. The way he fights on the court, his mental strength, and his never-give-up attitude, I really admire all of that. Watching him play is always inspiring," Deepti said.

“I grew up watching greats like Federer and Nadal. I followed their matches closely for a long time. But lately, Djokovic has become my favourite. I follow his matches more than anyone else now," he added.
