A national-level Taekwondo player has expressed her deep anguish to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami after she was allegedly asked to pay INR 1.5 lakh to secure her selection at the international level, despite winning gold at the national championship.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami met school students as a part of ‘Mukhyamantri Yuva Vidyarthi Manthan’ (Chief Minister Youth Student Conclave), where students of 11 and 12 from all 2828 registered government, non-government and private institutions and colleges participated in the programme.

The initiative aims to provide students with a platform to share their ideas, suggestions and concerns directly with the government, with Pushkar Singh Dhami listening to participants' grievances and outlining the state’s administration’s commitment to empower youth through educational and career opportunities.

Taekwondo Player Breaks Down Over Allegations

As Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami interacted with students, the event took a controversial turn after a Taekwondo player raised allegations of being asked to pay an amount for her participation at the international level.

In a video that went viral on social media, a girl stood up and revealed that she recently won the gold medal at the national level, but was asked to pay INR 1.5 lakh for her selection to compete at the international level. The Taekwondo player broke down while explaining that the alleged that the demand left her unable to represent India.

“Recently, I participated in the Taekwondo nationals, where I won a gold medal. From there, I have secured selection for international events, but they were demanding money, INR 1.5 lakh rupees, for the international selection. Because of this, I wasn't able to go play internationally," the distressed athlete recounted before breaking down.

However, instead of addressing grave allegations within the sports administration, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami was seen cutting her short, telling her to sit down, before briefly asking for her school name and instructing officials to note it down.

Taekwondo Player Clarifies Alleged Bribe Demand

A few days after attending CM Pushkar Singh Dhami’s student outreach programme, where the Taekwondo player alleged that she was asked to pay INR 1.5 lakh for international selection, she issued a clarification on the allegations.

In another video, the Taekwondo player, identified as a Class 12 student named Sahra, stated that she had travelled to Jammu to participate in the national championships and had qualified for an international tournament in Romania. She added that the organisers provided INR 1.7 lakh towards the expenses, while the remaining amount had to be paid by her. However, she did not inform anyone at her school and, as a result, could not travel to Romania.

“I went to CM sir's programme where I couldn't tell all the information about myself. My selection was in Jammu, and I had gone there for the National Games. For international games, I got selected to participate in Romania. They were giving me a fee of INR 1.7 lakh, and the rest was to be paid by myself," the student said.

"I didn't tell anybody in the school or anybody else. Because she couldn't go to Romania," he added.

Ahead of the BWF World Championships, the organisers of the prestigious badminton tournament have employed professional mimicry artists to imitate langur calls to keep the monkeys away during the event at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.

The World Badminton Championship is scheduled to take place from August 17 to 23, with around 300 players from 50 countries set to participate in the prestigious tournament. India will be hosting this prestigious event for the second time, after previously staging the BWF World Championships in Hyderabad in 2009

A total of 16 Indian players, including the 2019 World Champion PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, Ayush Shetty, Unnati Hooda, the doubles pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, and women’s doubles duo of Gayathri Gopichand and Tereesa Jolly, will aim to lead the host nation's campaign on home turf, carrying the hopes of passionate Indian fans across all five competitive categories.

Langur Impronauts To Keep Monkeys Away

As India prepares for the return of the prestigious badminton event after 17 years, the organisers of the tournament have made extra preparations to tackle an unusual problem: monkeys entering the venue and disrupting the competition at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.

“Good morning, my people. I am sorry to inform you of the departure of my son Prichard from this earthly world, now he is in a better world,” Richard wrote.

“I did everything possible to fulfill his wish, his dream of bringing him on vacation to Puerto Rico as much as he desired, but it could not be.

“Thank you for so many years of love and prayers. To the extent that you can, please keep us in your prayers,” he added.

Indian triple jumper and bronze medalist Selva Prabhu Thirumaran revealed that he was suffering from food poisoning during the recently concluded Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Speaking to the Press Trust of India, the Tamil Nadu track and field athlete expressed regret at not winning the gold medal, as the food poisoning left him completely drained of energy and strength right before the final event.

“I wish I should have gotten that gold. I was really hoping for gold, but what can be done when the competition begins, there is illness and food poisoning,” the triple jumper said.

“I feel that in the end, there is always a cost to yourself. I am mentally tough, so I decided, whatever happens, I will do it. Keep pushing myself," he added.

Speaking to IANS, Harjinder revealed that her mother was ‘a little upset’ during the call, as the weightlifter has been away from home for nearly three months while training and competing, adding that her mother was deeply emotional after seeing her silver medal following all the sacrifices and hard work she poured into preparing for the multi-sport event.

“I usually call my mother first whenever I win a medal, and today was no different; I spoke to her briefly right after my event as she was a little upset with me for being away at competitions for so long,” the 29-year-old said.

"First and foremost, we would like to unequivocally apologise for the depiction of the wrong map of India. We will take immediate steps to correct this. Once again, our sincere apologies, we never wanted to offend anyone rather wanted to serve with pride to Indian contingent.

"We will change the logo with proper map. It was our humble privilege and honour that we served Team India after their fantastic achievements in the Commonwealth Games. All athletes and guests thoroughly enjoyed their evening, these memories will last with us for India. Team Mr Singh India," the restaurant added.

Who is Emmanouil Karalis?

Emmanouil Karalis hails from Athens, Greece, and has firmly established himself as one of the world's elite pole vaulters. He is the son of a Greek father from Pyrgos and a Ugandan mother. The Greek star also has a twin sister, Angeliki, who participates in heptathlon.

Emmanouil Karalis rose through the ranks of youth competition, winning a gold medal at the 2016 European Youth Championships, a bronze medal at the 2015 World Youth Championships, and two silver medals at the 2019 and 2021 European U23 Athletics Championships.

From the youth level, he continued to excel at the senior level, winning gold medals at the 2019, 2021, and 2025 Balkan Athletics Championships, a gold and a silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in 2025 and 2023, respectively, two silver medals (2025 and 2026) and a bronze (2024) at the World Indoor Championships.

Former Indian hockey captain and goalkeeper PR Sreejesh has shared his thoughts on the recent controversy surrounding the national team's switch from the traditional blue jersey to a saffron kit, which sparked a political as well as sporting debate ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

Ahead of the World Cup 2026, starting on August 15th, Hockey India found itself at the centre of attention after the long tradition of donning the blue jersey was replaced with complete orange outfits, drawing mixed reactions from former players, political circles, and fans alike. The saffron switch has prompted heated discussions regarding team identity, a sudden departure from the iconic blue kit that has long defined Indian hockey on the international stage.

Additionally, Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey, who is also a former player, sent an email to executive board members expressing strong displeasure over the approval process, stating that the decision was implemented without being placed before the executive board or brought to his prior notice, apparently exposing internal governance rifts within the federation.

PR Sreejesh Questions Debate Around India's Jersey Colour

As the Indian hockey jersey controversy has taken centre stage, seemingly taking away attention from India’s preparation for the prestigious tournament in Belgium’s Wavre and the Netherlands’ Amstelveen, legendary goalkeeper PR Sreejesh questioned the discussion over jersey change from blue to saffron.

“To be honest, I didn't initially understand what the issue was because the jersey colour had changed for the 2014 and 2018 World Cups as well. Even one of our training kits was orange,” the two-time Olympic bronze medalist told the PTI.

“Why is there so much discussion before the World Cup this time? Is it because of the saffron colour or simply because the colour changed? If the controversy is about the colour change, then it should have happened in 2014 and 2018 too, when we wore yellow and light blue jerseys,” he added.

The new Indian hockey saffron jersey will not only be donned by the men’s team but also the women's team, as both squads step out in the striking new kit as their primary uniform for the upcoming marquee tournament. The new kit was unveiled on July 27, 2026, through an official social media announcement by Hockey India.

Visibility Reason Questioned

Further speaking on the Indian hockey jersey colour change, the former goalkeeper doesn’t have an issue with changing the kit colours but openly questioned the justification provided by authorities regarding visibility on blue turfs, stating that if visibility was the reason behind the saffron switch, then the blue jersey should never be worn again.

“I have no issue with changing the jersey colour, but the reason being cited is strange. If the colour is being changed due to visibility issues during play, then the blue jersey should never be worn again." Sreejesh said.

“It is true that having the same colour makes visibility a bit difficult, but in the 14 years since the blue turf was introduced, the jersey colour has changed only twice. We have played in blue in almost every major tournament, including the Tokyo and Paris Olympics," he added.

The Indian men's hockey team has been donning blue jerseys in major international competitions since 1928, when India first participated in the Olympics. Meanwhile, the women's team wore the traditional blue kit when it played its first official international fixture against Scotland in Folkestone, England, in September 1953.

India’s Prospects of Winning the World Cup

Amid the jersey controversy, PR Sreejesh urged the team to ignore the outside noise and stay completely focused on ending the country's 50-year World Cup medal drought, stating that this represents a golden opportunity to secure a podium finish and create history.

“We have been waiting for so many years. This time, we have a golden opportunity. England is the only tough team in our pool. If we finish at the top, we might face Argentina, a team we have beaten before. The path to the semifinals looks easier,” the former India captain said.

“I just want to say that play your best hockey, enjoy the game to the fullest and end this 50-year wait. You won't get an opportunity like this again. Forget the pressure of expectations, forget the off-field talk, and secure a spot on the podium. 50 years is a long wait," he added.
