India’s eFootball side needed just a win against Mongolia to secure their spot in the quarterfinals after opening their Group F campaign with a tense, goalless draw against Uzbekistan.

As Uzbekistan steamrolled Mongolia in the previous match with heavy margins, 6-3 on mobile and 12-0 on console, India desperately required a high-scoring victory on the virtual pitch to overturn a massive goal-difference deficit. However, India’s fate was eventually sealed not because of their performance on the digital turf, but by a rigid rulebook that converted an opponent’s administrative lapse into a big blow for India’s medal ambitions.

When Mongolia’s eFootball team arrived at the venue three minutes past the cut-off, it was already decided that tournament protocols left no room for negotiation. Indian team appealed to tournament officials for a chance to settle the outcome competitively on the controllers, but their protests were firmly rejected under strict event bylaws. Mongolia’s three-minute late arrival for a crucial match has left India's eFootball campaign paralyzed by a technicality.

The ruthless tournament regulations have robbed India of its chances of winning a historic medal at the Asian Games.

India Declines $500 For Judge Panel Review

Though India appealed to tournament officials for a chance to play out the fixture, the request was denied under strict event bylaws. However, the officials offered the contingent an option to lodge a formal challenge through a judge panel review, but doing so required a fee of $500 (approx. INR 47,855).

However, India decided to pursue the challenge, given that the chances of qualifying for the knockout stage were slimmer because of the strict parameters of the rulebook offering no mathematical guarantee of bridging Uzbekistan's superior goal difference.

Speaking to The Bridge, Chinmay Sahoo revealed that India was offered the option to pursue a formal review through a panel of judges, but the process required a fee of $500. However, the contingent refused to go ahead with the formal review because, in the goal difference, paying the fee would be a waste of money,

“We were told we could pay $500 for a judge panel check.” Sahoo said.

“The thing is, $500 is kind of a waste of money, because they have mentioned that coming late is a forfeit according to the rules.

“Unless they gave us a 3-0, 3-0 walkover with a +6 goal difference, we were not qualifying,” he added.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Uzbekistan, Japan, Jordan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand qualified for the quarterfinals, where Iran, Japan, Malaysia, and Uzbekistan advanced directly to the semifinals, while India’s campaign ended on a technicality without a single virtual match played.

The Indian shooting duo finished on top of the podium with a total with a total score of 484.6 at the Aichi General Shooting Range.

Suruchi and Kamaljeet were ahead of South Korea’s Suhyeon Hong and Gaeun Choo, maintaining their composure throughout the final stages to seal a dominant victory by a 6.6-point margin. This was India’s first gold medal in shooting and the second overall in the ongoing Asian Games 2026.

India has sent a 22-member rowing contingent to the quadrennial continental multi-sport event in Aichi–Nagoya. The contingent includes seasoned campaigners and top-tier athletes such as 2022 Asian Games silver medalist Arvind Singh, Balraj Panwar, Jaswinder Singh, and Nitin Kumar for the competition in Japan.

However, ahead of the opening races, which begin on September 23, the Indian rowing camp was thrown into disarray following sudden, last-minute crew changes and event entry shifts mandated by the team management.

‘Some Rowers in a Disturbed State of Mind’

According to reports, there have been sudden changes in the core lineup, with 2022 silver medalist Arvind Singh shifted from single sculls to quadruple sculls, while Balraj Panwar was moved from quadruple sculls to single sculls. Athletes have expressed disappointment at the team management’s late-night decisions.

According to the report by Press Trust of India (PTI), an Indian rower, on the condition of anonymity, revealed that some of the rowers struggled to process the unexpected changes, noting that severe mental distress had left them unable even to eat their meals ahead of the crucial continental event.

“Some rowers have not taken food yet as they are in a disturbed state of mind. They are not knowing what to do,” a rower told the PTI.

The team management, led by Australian head coach Antony Patterson and Rowing Federation of India (RFI) president Balaji Maradap, has replaced several first-choice combinations, including bringing in Nitin Kumar and Jaswinder Singh to replace Saurav Kumar and Vipul Satish in the men's pair.

The management introduced reserve rower Jasmail Singh into the coxless four, while Vipul Ghurde was moved from the men’s pair to the coxless four, and Saurav Kumar was dropped from the event.

Speaking further on the sudden changes in the combinations ahead of the opening races, another Indian rower expressed frustration over the disruption to months of preparation, saying the last-minute changes caused significant pressure and anxiety among the athletes.

“We are going by what our manager has told us. We will be giving our best when we enter the water, but they shouldn't have done this," an Indian rower told the Times of India (TOI).

“It has brought a lot of pressure and anxiety. I couldn't sleep last night, I was very disturbed. A crew combination is set for six months or one year. We have been practising for a long time, and when it is changed one day before such a big competition, the athlete gets disturbed mentally.

“Crew combination is important in rowing. Someone who is not in a quad (quadruple) for six months, what is he going to achieve in one day?" he added.

However, Rumesh Pathirage has reportedly lodged a complaint with Turkish Airlines over the damage to his specialised javelins during the return journey. Ahead of the Asian Games 2026, Indian athletes reportedly faced chaotic lodging arrangements and administrative delays upon arriving in Nagoya, Japan. Following their send-off and departure from New Delhi, the contingent was greeted by an off-field logistical nightmare rather than a seamless welcome.

India has sent a 503-member contingent (comprising 269 men and 234 women) to compete across 35 sporting disciplines. India's men's and women’s cricket teams are expected to arrive in Japan separately, with the cricket contingents set to stay in designated accommodation arranged by the Asian Games organisers rather than in problematic temporary lodging.

However, the Indian athletes' arrival in Nagoya quickly soured as they confronted a decentralised housing structure, relying on scattered hotels and the Costa Serena cruise ship instead of a traditional Athletes' Village, which triggered massive administrative delays, missing paperwork, and frustrating hours stranded at transit hubs before they could finally access their rooms.

Indian Athletes Stranded at Airport for Over 12 Hours

The journey from New Delhi to Nagoya might have taken more than 12 hours, but the ordeal continued after they arrived in Japan, with several Indian athletes reportedly waiting for accommodation until late Wednesday night.

According to reports, Indian and Thai athletes were left stranded after their names were missing from the accommodation lists, preventing them from checking in and forcing them to wait for hours at the venue. In a video that went viral on social media, especially X (formerly Twitter), athletes from both nations were seen waiting for hours with their luggage.

Reportedly, some of the athletes were forced to sit or sleep on the floor of the airport as they waited for their accommodation arrangements to be sorted out. Ahead of the Indian athletes' arrival, accommodation has been a major issue, with event organisers facing several complaints from several participating nations over shortages, cramped temporary facilities and problems with room allocations.

Reportedly, after 14 hours, some Indian athletes finally received accommodation, although several had to share rooms, while others were temporarily shifted to hotels due to the ongoing lodging confusion.

Despite the organisers’ assurance that efforts were underway to address the complaints, the accommodation problems continued to cause frustration among athletes and officials ahead of the Games’ opening.

Indian Shooters Face Nightmare After Arrival in Japan

Meanwhile, the Indian shooting contingent, which includes 30 members, faced further logistical hurdles after being accommodated around 50 km from the shooting range, resulting in long commutes and delays in transportation.

According to the report by Times Now, the Indian shooting team arrived in Japan at 9 am and had to wait till 2 am in the morning to get their accommodation sorted, with the team facing prolonged delays in transportation and other logistical arrangements. They were not provided with food or water at the accommodation verification centre.

Additionally, the Indian shooters were also split across two hotels due to a shortage of hotel rooms, with additional delays as officials scrambled to secure sufficient space for the full squad.

The World No.8 and American tennis star Ben Shelton has inched closer to clinching his maiden Grand Slam title following his US Open 2026 semifinal victory over his compatriot Frances Tiafoe - 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 - at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday, September 12.

With this, Shelton became the first Black American tennis player since Arthur Ashe in 1972 to reach the final of the US Open, putting himself on the brink of scripting a historic feat when he takes on Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the title clash at the same venue named after the legendary trailblazer himself, Arthur Ashe.

On that note, let’s take a look at six Black American tennis players who won singles’ titles in the history of the US Open.

The former commissioned officer in the United States Army became a legendary figure in American tennis history, breaking barriers as the first Black American male player to win a Grand Slam title.

Ashe achieved this historic feat when he outlasted the Netherlands' Tom Okker in a gruelling five-set final at Forest Hills to claim the inaugural Open Era US Open title in 1968. In fact, the legendary tennis player was the first African American to win a Grand Slam title in the Open Era.

The legendary player won back-to-back US National Championships (now the US Open) singles titles in 1957 and 1958, cementing an unmatched legacy of grace, power, and perseverance, and forever altering the trajectory of the sport as a global icon.

She also won the Wimbledon titles in 1957 and 1958 and the French Open in 1956 (the first-ever Black American tennis player to win a Grand Slam title), completing a dominant run of five major singles titles that permanently altered the trajectory of the sport.

Arthur Ashe and Althea Gibson might have broken barriers for Black American tennis players, but Serena Williams took that legacy to an unprecedented level. The legendary player dominated the US Open across more than two decades, winning six singles titles between 1999 and 2014.

After winning her maiden US Open triumph in 1999 at the age of 17, Serena Williams won five more titles in 2002, 2008, 2012, 2013, and 2014, making her the first Black American tennis player to win five or more titles at Flushing Meadows, cementing her status as one of the greatest athletes in sporting history.

Apart from five US Open titles, Williams clinched seven titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and four French Open crowns, bringing her staggering career total to 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most by any female player in the Open Era.

Ahead of India’s Asian Games 2026, a controversy has appeared to have erupted after Wushu athlete Divyanshi Choudhary was dropped from the national squad at the eleventh hour, prompting intense allegations of mental harassment and an abuse of power against sports authorities.

India will be sending a 508-strong contingent across 35 sports for the upcoming edition of the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The wushu contingent will have seven players, three men and four men, representing India's medal hopes on the international stage. Divyanshi Accuses Authorities of Mental Harassment and Bias

Having secured her spot through national trials, the 18-year-old was left shattered after being dropped at the eleventh hour.

In a video that went viral on social media, Divyanshi has alleged mental harassment and abuse of power by the Wushu Association of India (WAI), claiming that her omission was an unfair abuse of power designed to favor a more established competitor, Naorem Roshibina Dev, whom she had defeated during the selection trials.

“I am forced to say this. I am being mentally harassed from June to September. I defeated her (Naorem) in trials. Then why is there a problem? I never got an opportunity to put my point of view across to the association,” Divyanshi said.

“Doctors have declared me fit enough to play and yet the association did not inform me before I was dropped. I wanted to wear the India jersey and win gold for India,” he added.

Divyanshi Choudhary hails from Kota, Rajasthan, and is an 18-year-old Wushu Sanda athlete who competes in the women’s 60kg category. She began her athletic journey training at local facilities in Rajasthan, specifically refining her skills in the combat discipline of Wushu Sanda, a Chinese form of kickboxing.

After quickly advancing through local and state competitions, Divyanshi made her way into the prestigious Sports Authority of India (SAI), where she continued to develop her skills as a Sanda athlete. Over the last few years, the 18-year-old has been training at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala.

Divyanshi received her major international breakthrough when she won the bronze medal at the 9th Wushu Junior Championships in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei in September 2024. The achievement marked an important milestone in the young athlete’s career.

The precise motives behind their intention to stay back in Japan rather than returning home, but North Korea’s repressive regime under Supreme Leader Kim-Jong Un continues to drive individuals toward desperate measures to escape strict political surveillance, severe human rights conditions, and the grave risks associated with failure to meet state expectations abroad.

Meanwhile, Japan was reportedly willing to reopen the talks with North Korea, but an initial overture at the opening ceremony of the Asian Games 2026 met with a cold shoulder when a Japanese official approaching North Korea's sports minister, Kim Il-guk, was rebuffed by aides who walked away without responding.

Afghanistan’s cyclist Fariba Hashimi grabbed attention at the ongoing Asian Games 2026 when she delivered a stellar performance in the women’s individual road race at the Shinshiro Cycling Road Course, securing a magnificent silver medal and scripting history for her country.

Fariba Hashimi finished second behind China’s Guo Li, after a gruelling contest across the Shinshiro Cycling Road Course where both athletes matched timing of 2:50:05, while Leung Wing Yee of Hong Kong finished with 2:50:46 to claim the bronze medal. However, the Afghan cyclist on the podium was the most talked-about after the race.

Fariba Hashimi became the first Afghan woman since 2002 to win a medal at the Asian Games, marking an end to a 24-year drought of podiums for the war-torn nation's female athletes, signalling a triumphant return to the continental stage.

An Escape from Taliban Rule to the Global Stage

Fariba Hashimi might have achieved a historic victory at the Asian Games 2026, but her journey to the podium was paved with immense hardship, stealth, and a courageous escape from the oppressive regime of the Taliban in her homeland. After the Taliban returned to Afghanistan in 2021, women were barred from nearly all public spheres.

For Fariba, she had already experienced the hostility of a society that rejected female athletes long before Taliban rule. She and her sister Yulduz discovered cycling in 2017 and used to borrow a cycle from the neighbours and learn in secret. However, they cannot forget the dangers that surrounded them.

Fariba Hashimi had to disguise herself as a man in order to avoid any suspicion while training on the roads of Faryab, covering her face and wearing loose clothes to blend in. Once the men in the village realized they were women, the locals hurled stones and bottles at them and threatened to stop them from bringing shame to the community.

When the Taliban began to rule Afghanistan in 2021, restrictions on women became even more severe, criminalizing virtually all aspects of public life, sports, and education for women. Since Fariba and her sister had already endured hostility from the local community, the regime’s strict edicts placed them in immediate physical peril.

Realising that staying in the Taliban-ruled Afghanistan would put an end to Fariba Hashimi and Yulduz’s athletic dreams, the sisters decided to take a brave call to escape from the country.

The Coach That Helped Fariba and Yulduz Escape

Fariba Hashimi and Yulduz were not alone in their darkest hour. Stepping in as a crucial lifeline was former Italian cycling world champion and two-time Olympian Alessandra Cappellotto, whose relentless advocacy and humanitarian efforts helped the sisters escape from Afghanistan, which became even more hostile for women after the Taliban returned to power.

Fariba and Yulduz’s perilous escape from their country gave them a new lease of life in Italy, as they found a safe refugee and a nurturing environment to build their lives and professional careers under Alessandra Cappellotto’s guidance. In 2022, Fariba Hashimi turned professional with Valcar–Travel & Service.

In 2024, Fariba and her sister, Yulduz Hashimi, were two of the six athletes selected to represent Afghanistan, with assistance from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Following her historic silver medal at the Asian Games 2026, Fariba Hashimi decided to use her platform to send a powerful message of solidarity to women and girls back home and across the globe.

“This silver medal can show a lot of resilience from Afghan women, and I'm really happy," Fariba told the BBC after the event.

“I'm not alone. I know that behind me, millions of women from many countries have the same dream, and they are standing with me.

“I was born inside a country where the women who dream are getting attacked, and I'm really happy that I have fought against that. I hope that the next generation will come here and represent their country without any fear," he added.

Fariba’s silver medal at the Asian Games is her best performance after her national title, UCI victory, and her participation at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Asian Games 2026: Organisers Defend ‘Functional’ Village as Teams Fume Over Container Huts and Beds

Accommodation for Asian Games athletes in Japan is "functional," and efforts are being made to deal with numerous complaints from disgruntled teams, a chief organiser told AFP.

More than 17,000 competitors and officials are expected at the continent's biggest sporting spectacular, which opens on Saturday in Nagoya.

In a bid to cut costs, organisers are housing athletes and officials in temporary accommodation ranging from a cruise liner and wooden containers to hotel rooms.

The plan has run into immediate problems, with South Korean officials branding the container huts the "worst ever" and saying the beds are too short.

An official from another team told AFP that he entered the facility, took one look at the arrangement and booked a hotel room instead.

Several countries have also complained about a shortage of accommodation.

Athletes Raise Concerns Over Leaks and Accommodation Conditions

Speaking ahead of the opening ceremony, organising committee president Hideaki Omura said efforts are being made to ensure athletes are comfortable.

"If there are different opinions, then we will respond to them appropriately," said Omura, who also serves as governor of Aichi prefecture.

"At this point, while we are responding to individual opinions, we have been improving everything as issues arise and we will continue to respond that way."

Byeon Jun-hyeong, a player with South Korea's men's basketball team, posted a video on social media showing a leaking sink and soaked floor in his hut accommodation.

He posted the caption, "Please help us".

Hundreds of athletes were briefly evacuated from their accommodation last week as record rainfall lashed Nagoya.

About 2,000 people are supposed to stay in the huts.

Cruise Control

Omura said plans for the huts, which were built this year, had been given a favourable assessment by a committee of former athletes, including Olympians.

"We explained everything to them and had them take a look around, and they said it looked functional and good," he said.

About 4,000 athletes and officials will also stay on the Italian cruise ship Costa Serena, which arrived in Nagoya on Tuesday.

Cruise ships have been used previously as accommodation at international sports events but never on this scale.

The Asian Games are taking place at a time when typhoons are common in Japan, and Nagoya has experienced heavy rainfall in recent weeks.

Omura said the priority was to keep athletes and officials on board safe.

"We believe we can provide accommodation that guarantees athletes' safety and allows them to deliver their best performance," he said.

Slow Sales

Athletes from 45 countries and territories will compete in more than 40 sports across over two weeks.

Omura said ticket sales were going "fairly well", especially for the marquee events.

But he admitted that lesser-known sports had yet to capture the Japanese public's imagination.

That includes cricket, which is practically unknown in Japan.

"India has a superstar cricket squad coming and Indian residents in Japan are saying, 'I can't believe we get to watch matches like this', but ticket sales haven't been very strong," said Omura.

"A lot of people in Japan have never seen cricket, so I really hope they take this chance and go and watch."

Omura Hails Asian Games’ Role in Bringing Rivals Together

Events at the Games, including basketball and football, have been underway since last week.

Omura said he was in attendance as the first action began when Qatar took on Iran in men's basketball.

After watching a physical contest, Omura said he hoped the Games would help Asia "reaffirm its bonds of friendship through sport".

"Iran and Qatar are in a situation where missiles are flying back and forth, but they can still play basketball together," he said.

"Without the Asian Games you couldn't have a game like that."
