A national-level Taekwondo player has expressed her deep anguish to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami after she was allegedly asked to pay INR 1.5 lakh to secure her selection at the international level, despite winning gold at the national championship.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami met school students as a part of ‘Mukhyamantri Yuva Vidyarthi Manthan’ (Chief Minister Youth Student Conclave), where students of 11 and 12 from all 2828 registered government, non-government and private institutions and colleges participated in the programme.

The initiative aims to provide students with a platform to share their ideas, suggestions and concerns directly with the government, with Pushkar Singh Dhami listening to participants' grievances and outlining the state’s administration’s commitment to empower youth through educational and career opportunities.

In a video that went viral on social media, a girl stood up and revealed that she recently won the gold medal at the national level, but was asked to pay INR 1.5 lakh for her selection to compete at the international level. The Taekwondo player broke down while explaining that the alleged that the demand left her unable to represent India.

“Recently, I participated in the Taekwondo nationals, where I won a gold medal. From there, I have secured selection for international events, but they were demanding money, INR 1.5 lakh rupees, for the international selection. Because of this, I wasn't able to go play internationally," the distressed athlete recounted before breaking down.

In another video, the Taekwondo player, identified as a Class 12 student named Sahra, stated that she had travelled to Jammu to participate in the national championships and had qualified for an international tournament in Romania. She added that the organisers provided INR 1.7 lakh towards the expenses, while the remaining amount had to be paid by her. However, she did not inform anyone at her school and, as a result, could not travel to Romania.

“I went to CM sir's programme where I couldn't tell all the information about myself. My selection was in Jammu, and I had gone there for the National Games. For international games, I got selected to participate in Romania. They were giving me a fee of INR 1.7 lakh, and the rest was to be paid by myself," the student said.

"I didn't tell anybody in the school or anybody else. Because she couldn't go to Romania," he added.

Ahead of the BWF World Championships, the organisers of the prestigious badminton tournament have employed professional mimicry artists to imitate langur calls to keep the monkeys away during the event at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.

The World Badminton Championship is scheduled to take place from August 17 to 23, with around 300 players from 50 countries set to participate in the prestigious tournament. India will be hosting this prestigious event for the second time, after previously staging the BWF World Championships in Hyderabad in 2009

A total of 16 Indian players, including the 2019 World Champion PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, Ayush Shetty, Unnati Hooda, the doubles pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, and women’s doubles duo of Gayathri Gopichand and Tereesa Jolly, will aim to lead the host nation's campaign on home turf, carrying the hopes of passionate Indian fans across all five competitive categories.

Langur Impronauts To Keep Monkeys Away

As India prepares for the return of the prestigious badminton event after 17 years, the organisers of the tournament have made extra preparations to tackle an unusual problem: monkeys entering the venue and disrupting the competition at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.

To prevent such incidents, the event organisers reportedly hired three professional ‘monkey whisperers’ who mimic langur calls to scare away rhesus monkeys from the venue. “Good morning, my people. I am sorry to inform you of the departure of my son Prichard from this earthly world, now he is in a better world,” Richard wrote.

“I did everything possible to fulfill his wish, his dream of bringing him on vacation to Puerto Rico as much as he desired, but it could not be.

“Thank you for so many years of love and prayers. To the extent that you can, please keep us in your prayers,” he added.

Meanwhile, an official investigation by Virginia’s Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation cleared Terrel Williams, referee Joe Cooper and ringside doctor Richard Ashby of wrongdoing, concluding that there was no single action ‘so apparent and/or egregious’ as to justify placing blame on any one person.

When asked about Wang’s physical discomfort during the quarterfinal clash, the 2019 World Champion said she was unsure whether the Chinese shuttler was genuinely injured or whether it was part of her strategy, while admitting that she needed to remain patient and focused on every point.

“I don't know if she is injured or not. Maybe that is her strategy or her way of doing it. You never know. Maybe that's her gameplay,” Sindhu told reporters.

“But I had to be very focused and very patient and focus on every point. So, yeah, I think the last 3 points just changed the game, is what I felt. I should have been a little patient,” he added.

Indian triple jumper and bronze medalist Selva Prabhu Thirumaran revealed that he was suffering from food poisoning during the recently concluded Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland.

India concluded the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze, finishing fourth in the medal table. Selva Prabhu Thirumaran clinched his maiden CWG medal, securing bronze by registering his best jump of 16.52 meters. He finished behind fellow compatriot and silver medalist Praveen Chithravel (16.58 meters) and Jamaica’s Jordan Scott, who took home the gold medal with a jump of 16.72 meters.

However, little did anyone know that the young athlete was competing under severe physical distress, suffering from a bout of food poisoning that hampered his peak performance on the field.

‘Wished I Should Have Gotten That Gold’

Selva Prabhu Thirumaran arrived in New Delhi from Glasgow on Monday, August 3, after returning from the Commonwealth Games. Speaking to the Press Trust of India, the Tamil Nadu track and field athlete expressed regret at not winning the gold medal, as the food poisoning left him completely drained of energy and strength right before the final event.

“I wish I should have gotten that gold. I was really hoping for gold, but what can be done when the competition begins, there is illness and food poisoning,” the triple jumper said.

“I feel that in the end, there is always a cost to yourself. I am mentally tough, so I decided, whatever happens, I will do it. Keep pushing myself," he added.

William Jewell College running back MicahJo Barnett died Saturday after a medical emergency during the season opener against Fort Lewis College in Liberty, Missouri, leading officials to suspend the game.

Paramedics responded on the field and took Barnett to a hospital; a couple of hours later, the school announced he had passed away. A cause of death was not announced by William Jewell.

Newsweek reported, citing a William Jewell College spokesperson, that Barnett was not suffering from an illness or health condition that would have prevented him from taking part in Saturday afternoon's game against Fort Lewis. "The College has no details as to the nature/cause," the spokesperson said. No further details were released by the school or by Barnett’s family.

RedditCFB, an account for college football-related discussion, shared details based on eyewitness accounts from those present at the game. It stated that he suffered “seizure-like symptoms,.”

According to The Athletic, Liberty Fire and EMS responded to the situation around 12:20pm CDT. Paramedics attempted to resuscitate him before taking him away in an ambulance. The Liberty North High School alum was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Jewell President Dr. Dave Van Horn later told media that Barnett was a business major at William Jewell and a native of Liberty.

"William Jewell College and the Liberty community mourn the passing of MicahJo Barnett," the statement read. "Our thoughts and prayers are with MicahJo’s family, teammates, friends, coaches, and faculty and staff."

"I want to say that we appreciate the response that we received from the Sheriff's Office," Horn said, "the police department, the EMS department, our school, the physician for the team."
