The celebration of Ganesh Utsav began in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and parts of western India, starting on September 14, and will continue for several days, with devotees organising processions, cultural programmes and community celebrations across the regions.

Vadodara’s Ganpati Chanda Dispute Escalates

As Ganapathi celebrations have kicked off on Monday, several groups have been collecting donations, commonly referred to as ‘chanda’, from local businesses and residents to fund pandals and festivities. However, the incident in Vadodara has put the spotlight on allegations of forced donations.

In CCTV footage, which spread across social media, a group of young people was seen confronting the shopkeeper at the Rajasthan Kulfi Store after he expressed his inability to pay a steep amount of money as demanded by them and instead offered a modest contribution. The refusal sparked an argument which rapidly escalated, resulting in vandalism of the property and assault on the trader.

According to local reports, the group allegedly demanded INR 21,000 from him, but when the owner offered a smaller sum of INR 1,000, citing his financial capacity, the youths turned aggressive, forcing their way into the premises and damaging equipment.

Following the incident, Rajesh Mandal submitted a written complaint at Turki police station, prompting police to begin an investigation. The officers are examining the event’s video footage and nearby CCTV cameras to identify the suspect and determine whether the chain was stolen or fell during the scuffle.

No Action Against Kota Group

The group has reportedly been identified as the Kota Tent Association, whose representatives had placed the large-scale order before allegedly walking away from the remaining balance and leaving the vendor stranded with massive overhead costs.

Despite a severe financial setback, the vendor didn’t file a formal complaint with local police and thus, no First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against the group, which reportedly means no formal criminal case has been registered over the alleged payment dispute so far. However, the vendor was threatened by the organisers over his attempts to recover the outstanding payment.

It was reported that the Kota Tent Association would withhold his remaining payment if the bag seller continued to press for the outstanding amount. However, there has been no official statement from the association regarding these allegations yet.

The incident was captured on CCTV and ended with police recovering his phone within minutes of his 911 call. Bisht managed to track his phone using another device. However, he said he was unsure whether it would be safe to go to the location himself.

“I could track it from another phone, but how was I supposed to get there? And what if I went there and that guy attacked me,” he said.

Rather than going after the suspect himself, Bisht said he contacted 911 and informed the police about the stolen phone and its tracked location.

He said officers went to the location and caught the suspect shortly afterwards. The phone was subsequently recovered.

Footage shared by Bisht also showed police officers speaking to and consoling him after the incident. One officer told him not to hesitate to call the police if he ever felt uncomfortable or unsafe.

In a display of shocking negligence, the Nagpur fire brigade allegedly arrived at the scene of an electric scooter fire without any water in their tender, sparking outrage among locals who witnessed the incident firsthand.

In a video that went viral on social media, the public was seen in a bewildered state as the official emergency vehicle pulled up to the scene, only for firefighters to realize they had no water to douse the roaring blaze. A few expressed anger while others laughed at the utter absurdity of the situation.

A busy street in Nagpur witnessed an unexpected emergency on Thursday when a parked electric scooter suddenly caught fire. Within moments, the vehicle was engulfed in thick smoke and aggressive flames, rapidly transforming into a charred heap of metal on the paved road.

The locals alarmed the fire department immediately, expecting a quick response to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby shops and vehicles. The fire engine immediately pulled up, giving a sense of relief to the onlookers. However, that relief was short-lived. To everyone’s disbelief, the firefighters opened the valves only to realize that the tender’s water tank was empty.

Left completely helpless, the emergency crew could not do anything as the scooter continued to burn down to its frame in broad daylight. The contractor, Bharat Navgire, who is also serves as a Shiv Sena local leader, and BJP councillor and planning committee chairman Sambhaji Shinde were spotted discussing the entrance of the municipal council building, situated right near the security guards' cabin.

The discussion appeared to have turned into a heated altercation between the two leaders before Navgire allegedly grabbed Shinde's arm, aggressively pushed him forward, and caused him to stumble, causing him to tumble down the steps, where he struck his head against the door of a parked car.

However, the bystanders, including NCP leader Anivash Deshmukh, immediately helped Sambhaji Shinde up and intervened to separate the two individuals. The BJP councillor Sambhaji Shinde was taken to Badlapur Rural Sub-District Hospital for treatment, where he was reportedly found to have sustained injuries to his head, neck and back.

The force of the push by Bharat Navgire was so powerful that Shinde lost his footing completely, tumbled down the stairs, and suffered injuries that required immediate treatment at the civic hospital in Badlapur.

Speaking on the shocking incident at Kulgaon-Badlapur Municipal Council, Shambaji Shinde stated that the discussion with Bharat Navgire had initially started on peaceful terms before rapidly deteriorating into an altercation. The BJP councillor further added that he would file an FIR against Navgire for physical assault.

“I told him that I have no role in processing his bills. The discussion initially began peacefully but suddenly turned into an altercation," Shinde said.

Conversely, Bharat Navgire claimed that his financial clearances were deliberately blocked following politically motivated allegations of corruption against him, alleging that the withheld payments were tied to electoral rivalries after his sister-in-law contested and lost against Shinde as a Shiv Sena candidate.

Meanwhile, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has already issued strict warnings against performing such risky stunts on transit grounds, stating that the transit authority noted that fixing or pasting mobile devices to train windows, doors, and tracks is strictly prohibited on metro premises.

"The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has noticed that some social media content creators are pasting their mobile phones on the Metro train windows and shooting videos with the moving train," the statement read.

"This act can cause inconvenience or even Injury to other passengers and can damage the mobile phone devices of the users."

"DMRC authorities are viewing this with all seriousness, and if any content creator is caught indulging in such a shoot, necessary action shall be taken."

"Therefore, the content creators are hereby directed to not shoot such videos within the Delhi Metro premises," the DMRC added.

Bus driven on wrong side of road

According to police, the driver was 'ejected from the vehicle' during the confrontation. The bus was then driven along Park Way towards High Street on the wrong side of the road. It subsequently collided with multiple vehicles before eventually being stopped. Police officers arrested a man in his 20s on suspicion of robbery and dangerous driving.

The suspect remains in police custody while enquiries continue. The bus driver suffered minor injuries and was treated by paramedics. Police said no other injuries had been reported in connection with the incident.

Detective Sergeant Taigh Lannie said officers understood the incident would have been alarming for people in the area and sought to reassure the community that police had responded quickly, reported local media.

Police seek witnesses and footage

West Mercia Police have appealed to people who may have witnessed the incident or recorded it to come forward.

Officers are particularly seeking dashcam, CCTV, mobile phone and doorbell footage from Court Street, Park Way and High Street around the time of the incident.

A 24-year-old Mumbai man was arrested after allegedly using a fake PMO identity card at Jio World Plaza in BKC, where his bodyguard was carrying a licensed firearm. Parikh’s lawyer now claims he may have been duped.

A Mumbai court has sent 24-year-old Rohan Premal Parikh to police custody until September 11 after he was arrested in connection with an alleged fake Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) identity card at Jio World Plaza in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

His bodyguard, Dilip Rajaram Kunde, was also arrested after he was found carrying a licensed firearm. A third accused, Prathamesh Ganesh Bagul, is wanted in the case.

But a new claim made in court has added another layer to the case: Parikh’s lawyer says his client may himself have been deceived by people posing as government officials.

Parikh, 24, is at the centre of the BKC fake PMO identity card case. Police allege that he used an identity card claiming he was a PMO official and tried to enter Jio World Plaza on September 7, a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to attend an event in the area.

Police said the card described Parikh as a 'Grade C' PMO official. Questions were raised about the document because it reportedly did not contain a validity date and lacked the designation of the person who had supposedly issued it.

Parikh's bodyguard Kunde also attempted to enter the premises but was stopped by a door-frame metal detector because he was carrying a firearm. Police later confirmed that the weapon was licensed.

According to police, Parikh reached Jio World Plaza on the evening of September 7 and entered the premises. When security personnel stopped his associate because of the firearm, Parikh returned and showed the alleged PMO identity card.

The discrepancies in the card raised suspicion, following which the matter was reported to the police. The Mumbai Crime Branch is now investigating the case, including the origin of the alleged fake identity card and the purpose behind using it.

An FIR was registered at BKC police station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including allegations relating to impersonation and unlawful entry while armed.

This is the biggest new question in the case.

During Tuesday's court hearing, Parikh's lawyer claimed that his client had been offered work connected with the PMO in 2024 by a person named Tarun Kapoor, according to a report by Aaj Tak. The defence said Parikh received what appeared to be official communications, including an offer letter, an identity card and a letter purportedly bearing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's signature.

His lawyer also claimed Parikh received an email allegedly linked to an Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister and communications concerning an advisory role and defence acquisition policy.

The defence argued that these documents may have convinced Parikh that he genuinely had a government-related role and that he could have been conned himself.

The lawyer said the documents and communications available with Parikh had been handed over to investigators.

These claims are currently part of the defence's case and have not been established by the police or a court.

Parikh's lawyer has also given an explanation for his presence at the venue.

According to the defence, Parikh went to the mall for personal reasons, allegedly to buy perfume for his fiancée, and his visit was not connected to Prime Minister Modi's scheduled event. Police have also clarified that the September 7 incident had no established connection with the Prime Minister's visit on September 8.

The police investigation will determine whether the alleged PMO identity was knowingly used by Parikh or whether he was genuinely misled by someone claiming to represent the government.

Rohan Parikh and Dilip Kunde remain in police custody until September 11, while investigators continue questioning them. Police are also looking for Prathamesh Bagul, the third wanted accused in the case.

The Crime Branch is examining the alleged identity card, electronic communications and other documents to establish where the credentials came from and whether others were involved.

Two competing versions remain: police allege that Parikh used a fake PMO identity to gain access to a private venue, while his defence says he may have been the target of a sophisticated fraud. The investigation will determine which version stands up to scrutiny.
