As part of customary traditions during vehicle deliveries in India, the showroom staff handed over a traditional floral garland to welcome the new purchase, leading to the delightfully innocent confusion. After taking the garland from the showroom, the man thought straight away, without hesitation, without second thought, turned toward his wife and respectfully placed the garland on her, resulting in a tender smile from her.

The staff immediately stepped in and corrected the elderly man, telling him that the garland was for the bike rather than his wife, prompting a burst of gentle laughter in the showroom, as he finally placed the floral decoration on the newly purchased two-wheeler.

Nurses in India are often overworked and vulnerable during late-night shifts, with the most recent incident in West Bengal, where a 30-year-old nurse was found dead inside a washroom at Kolkata’s NRS Medical College and Hospital while on night duty, prompting a police probe and a separate health department inquiry.

How Did the Shocking Incident Unfold at Limbdi Hospital?

The shocking incident at Limbdi Civil Hospital in Surendranagar district reportedly occurred in the early hours of August 15, on the day of India’s Independence Day, while a 26-year-old nurse was on her night shift.

According to local reports, the accused, identified as Divyarajsinh Gajendrasinh Rana, arrived at the hospital between 1:45 and 2:00 AM and entered the emergency ward, where the on-duty nurse was attending to patients. However, Divyarajsinh appeared to be visibly frustrated over the availability of doctors and began to create a ruckus inside the hospital.

In viral CCTV footage, the nurse was seen coming out of her room to make a call when the accused became even more furious and slapped the nurse across her face, prompting her to immediately leave the area and seek help from other hospital staff. The incident reportedly left the nurse shaken, while the CCTV footage captured the entire episode.

Following the assault, the female nurse immediately informed the hospital staff, who then alerted the local police for further action. Police subsequently reached the hospital and took the accused into custody.

Since the nurse was on her night duty, the alleged assault by a man, who was furiously seeking the whereabouts of the doctors, raised serious concerns over the safety and security of healthcare workers, particularly those working late-night shifts when staffing can be limited.

FIR Registered Against the Accused

Following the shocking incident, Limbdi Police have registered a First Investigation Report (FIR) based on a complaint by the affected nurse, Unnatiben Kanubhai Solanki, alongside corroborating CCTV footage of the incident.

The accused, Divyarajsinh Gajendrasinh Rana, has already been taken into police custody and was booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for physical assault and obstructing a public servant from performing their duties.

Since the nurse is working at a government hospital, she is classified as a public servant, making the alleged assault and obstruction of her official duties a serious offence under the law. The police have already initiated legal proceedings against Rana based on the CCTV evidence of the assault and the formal complaint filed by the hospital staff.

According to local reports, the accused was taken to the hospital and forced to make a public apology to the nursing staff and medical personnel as community anger mounted over the attack. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) P.G. Zala is currently leading the investigation into the case, ensuring that all aspects of the complaint and the viral CCTV evidence are thoroughly examined to hold the accused accountable under the law.

Karnataka has issued a strong warning over the sale and consumption of Datura, a highly toxic plant whose fruits and seeds were reportedly being listed for sale as food on some e-commerce platforms.

The Karnataka Food Safety and Drugs Administration Department has suspended the food licences of Amazon, Swiggy Instamart and BigBasket until further orders after Datura fruits and seeds were found displayed as food products.

Datura is a poisonous flowering plant commonly known in English as thorn apple or devil's trumpet. It belongs to the nightshade family and is found in many parts of India, often growing in open land and wastelands.

The plant has large, trumpet-shaped flowers and a distinctive round or oval fruit covered with sharp spines. Its fruits contain numerous seeds. In different parts of India, Datura is known by different local names. It is called Ummetha Puvvu in Telugu and Umathai in Tamil. The fruit is also referred to locally as Ummetha Pandu.

While Datura has a long history of use in some traditional and religious practices, that does not make the plant safe to eat. Medical literature is clear that all parts of the plant can be toxic.

Datura contains naturally occurring toxic compounds, including atropine, scopolamine and hyoscyamine. These substances interfere with the normal functioning of the nervous system and can produce what doctors describe as anticholinergic toxicity.

The effects can vary depending on the amount consumed and the part of the plant involved. Symptoms may include a dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, flushed and hot skin, blurred vision, dilated pupils, a rapid heartbeat, agitation, confusion and disorientation. In severe cases, people may experience hallucinations, seizures, breathing problems, coma or other life-threatening complications.

Symptoms can begin within hours of ingestion, making accidental consumption a medical emergency requiring urgent professional assessment.

The Karnataka Food Safety and Drugs Administration Department said the issue came to its notice after Datura fruits and seeds were found displayed for sale under food licences or registrations on certain online platforms.

The department said the plant possesses toxic properties and that consuming its fruits and seeds could cause serious adverse effects on human health. It therefore directed food businesses to stop selling or distributing Datura for food or human consumption and to immediately remove relevant online listings and promotional material.

The licences of the three major platforms will remain suspended until further orders, with the authorities seeking compliance reports before considering further action.

The warning also comes against the backdrop of reports of accidental Datura poisoning. Earlier this year, a family in Andhra Pradesh reportedly fell seriously ill after consuming a dish prepared with Datura flowers, allegedly after following a viral social media video.

Medical case reports have also documented families accidentally consuming Datura after mistaking it for edible plants, reported Deccan Chronicle. Such incidents underline the danger of identifying unfamiliar plants through appearance alone or following unverified recipes online.

The key message behind Karnataka's action is straightforward: Datura and Ummetha Pandu should not be treated as ordinary food ingredients. Anyone who develops unusual symptoms after eating a suspected toxic plant should seek urgent medical care rather than attempting home treatment.

From a centuries-old temple in Tamil Nadu to a colourful waste plant in Osaka, 8 buildings show how architects have used colour to transform architecture. Featured in Chromatic Architecture, the structures use vivid pigments, ceramics and mosaics.

Colour has been part of architecture for thousands of years. From painted temples and ancient mosaics to stained-glass windows and bold modern buildings, architects have repeatedly used colour to make spaces more memorable, dramatic and joyful.

A new book, Chromatic Architecture - the Craft of Colour in Design, as mentioned in a report by BBC explores this relationship between buildings and colour. Designer Adam Nathaniel Furman and author Kate Mazade argue that colour can do much more than decorate a structure. Used well, it can change how people experience a building and even give an ordinary place a strong identity.

The book brings together striking examples from around the world. They range from a huge temple complex in Tamil Nadu to a waste incinerator in Osaka and a public library in Spain.

Here are eight buildings where colour is not an afterthought but a central part of the architecture.

Tamil Nadu has a long tradition of using vivid colours in religious architecture. One of its best-known examples is the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam.

The Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam in Tamil Nadu is dedicated to Lord Ranganathar, a form of Vishnu. Built in Tamil architectural style, it is the world’s largest functioning religious complex. The temple has been expanded over centuries and features 21 gateways. It received a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award of Merit in 2017.

Construction of the temple complex began in the 1st Century AD and continued under several dynasties for centuries. Later additions continued into modern times. Today, the complex covers more than 150 acres and is among the world's largest functioning Hindu temple complexes.

Its 21 towering gateways, known as gopurams, are covered with brightly painted sculptures. Gods, mythical figures, animals and other decorative forms fill the gateways, creating a striking wall of colour.

For Furman, the use of pigment is closely linked to the spiritual experience of the place. The intense colours help separate the temple from the ordinary world and create an atmosphere of wonder for visitors and worshippers.

Barcelona's Palau de la Música Catalana opened in 1908 and quickly became a symbol of Catalonia's cultural confidence.

Designed by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, the concert hall combines elements of Art Nouveau, Gothic Revival and Romanesque architecture, along with Moorish and Valencian influences.

Colour appears almost everywhere. Decorative tiles, stained glass, mosaics, columns, sculptures and intricate stonework work together to create an interior that feels closer to a fairytale than a conventional concert hall.

Furman describes the building as a place where every architectural detail contributes to the overall effect. Rather than being applied simply as decoration, colour becomes part of the building's identity.

The Guardian Building in Detroit was completed in 1929 and is one of the city's best-known Art Deco landmarks. Designed by Wirt C. Rowland, it became known locally as the "Cathedral of Finance".

The building's exterior is covered with nearly two million orange-toned bricks and terracotta tiles. Inside, the main lobby is even more dramatic, with a three-storey vaulted ceiling and a rich arrangement of tiles in strong primary colours.

The colourful interiors also reflect the craftsmanship of the Great Lakes region during the early 20th Century.

At a time when Detroit was becoming a major centre of American industry and commerce, the building made a confident statement. Its colours and decoration still communicate that sense of ambition today.

The large, windowless building could easily have become another dull concrete structure. Ponti took a very different approach.

He covered the exterior with a striking geometric pattern of green tiles. Reports suggest that the design was inspired by the patchwork appearance of Dutch farmland when seen from above.

The result was a building that stood out strongly from its surroundings.

Furman sees the project as an example of how colour can rescue an otherwise plain modernist structure. Instead of hiding its large concrete form, Ponti turned the building into something closer to a giant piece of public art.

The Reversible Destiny Lofts in Tokyo were completed in 2005 by artist-architect Shusaku Arakawa and poet Madeline Gins.

The unusual residential complex was created as a tribute to American disability rights advocate and writer Helen Keller. Its nine apartments contain brightly coloured cylinders, spheres, cuboids and uneven surfaces.

The unusual design was intentional. Arakawa and Gins believed that an environment that challenged the body and senses could encourage people to remain active.

Colour plays an important part in that idea. Strong shades cover different surfaces, while uneven floors and unusual room shapes prevent the apartments from feeling like conventional homes.

The result is deliberately intense. Rather than allowing residents to disappear into a predictable domestic routine, the designers wanted the building to keep them alert and engaged with their surroundings.

Perhaps the most surprising building on the list is the Maishima Waste Incineration Plant in Osaka.

Designed by Austrian artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the plant looks more like a colourful fantasy castle than an industrial facility.

Hundertwasser strongly opposed the rigid lines and uniform appearance associated with much of modern architecture. He believed buildings should feel more like living organisms.

That philosophy is clearly visible at Maishima. Yellow stripes appear to drip down parts of the building, while red stripes decorate its tall cylindrical tower. Rounded structures, colourful walls and unusual shapes make the plant look remarkably playful.

The building's appearance also challenges the usual image of waste facilities as purely functional spaces. Its bright colours turn an essential but often overlooked public service into a visual landmark.

Completed in 2019, the Leganés Central Library was designed by BN Asociados Arquitectos.

The building uses colour to reflect what is inside it. Large pastel ceramic panels cover its rounded exterior, creating a soft and unusual appearance.

The architects were also responding to the character of the surrounding neighbourhood, which lacked major cultural landmarks. The library was designed to become a visible public destination.

As sunlight moves across the curved ceramic surface, the colours and textures change during the day. The pale tones can resemble sheets of paper, creating a visual connection between the building and the books housed within it.

Here, colour helps the library communicate its purpose before a visitor even enters.

The Croydon Colonnade in East Croydon was completed in 2003. Designed by Adam Nathaniel Furman, it creates a colourful pedestrian space near the railway station.

The 50-metre structure consists of 16 large columns and two walls covered with thousands of handmade porcelain tiles.

The tiles are coated in thick, translucent glaze. The colour begins with a deep blue near the bottom and gradually changes to creamy white towards the top.

The effect is designed to surround pedestrians with colour rather than simply present it as a distant feature.

Furman drew inspiration from the long history of blue-and-white architectural ceramics used across different civilisations and regions, including ancient Egypt, Portugal, Turkey, Iran and Babylon.

The result gives an otherwise ordinary transport setting a more memorable character.

These eight buildings show that colour can serve very different purposes.

It can express religious devotion, as seen at the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple. It can represent cultural identity, as at the Palau de la Música Catalana. It can celebrate commercial success, as in Detroit's Guardian Building.

In other cases, colour can make an industrial building more welcoming, give a new neighbourhood a landmark or turn a transport route into an experience.

That is why colour remains such a powerful architectural tool. It can change how people feel about a building before they have even understood its design.

For Furman and Mazade, that is precisely the point. Architecture does not have to be grey, restrained or purely functional. Colour can give buildings personality, create memories and connect them with the communities around them.

From an ancient temple in southern India to a futuristic apartment complex in Tokyo, these examples make one thing clear: when architects use colour boldly, a building can become much more than a structure. It can become an experience.

Video of bus crash viral

According to initial reports, the scooter was travelling ahead of the tourist bus when it suddenly turned right across the road.

The bus driver reportedly tried to avoid hitting the two-wheeler and sharply swerved the vehicle. The bus then lost control, crashed into the side of a nearby petrol pump and overturned.

The scooter rider narrowly escaped being hit.

August can be a useful month to start a small terrace vegetable garden in many parts of India, particularly with warm-season and kharif-friendly crops. The key is good drainage, adequate sunlight and protection from prolonged heavy rain.

The monsoon can make gardening a little easier in many parts of India. Warm temperatures, regular moisture and longer growing days can give several vegetables a good start. But there is one important catch: a terrace garden during the rainy season needs drainage, not just water.

August is not automatically the right month for every vegetable in every part of the country. Local temperature, rainfall, sunlight and the variety being grown all matter. Still, several vegetables are suitable for warm, rainy conditions and can be grown in pots or grow bags.

Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) advisories list crops such as okra, brinjal, tomato, beans and several gourds among vegetables that can be cultivated in kharif conditions.

If you have a sunny balcony, terrace or even a small outdoor corner, these 10 vegetables are worth considering.

Okra or Bhindi is one of the easiest choices for a beginner's terrace garden. It enjoys warmth and can be grown in a suitably sized container.

Sow the seeds directly in well-drained potting soil and place the container where the plant gets several hours of sunlight. Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged.

ICAR records varieties of okra that are specifically suitable for rainy-season cultivation, with some varieties producing their first harvest roughly 45 days after sowing under suitable conditions.

Radish does not need a huge amount of space, making it useful for balcony gardeners. Choose a reasonably deep pot or grow bag so the root has room to develop.

Use loose soil that drains quickly and avoid compacting it. Sow the seeds directly rather than moving young seedlings unnecessarily.

The exact harvest time depends on the variety and growing conditions, so the seed packet is a better guide than assuming every August-sown radish will be ready in exactly 30 days.

French beans can be grown in containers, provided the soil is fertile and drains well. Bush varieties are particularly convenient when space is limited.

Sow the seeds directly and give the plants plenty of sunlight. If you choose a climbing variety, provide a simple support structure before the vines become heavy.

ICAR lists French bean varieties among crops that can be grown in suitable Indian conditions, with some varieties capable of producing pods in around 70 days.

Brinjal is another practical choice for an Indian home garden. It needs warmth, sunlight and a reasonably large container.

Instead of planting too many plants together, give each one enough space for air movement. This becomes particularly important during humid weather, when poor ventilation and excess moisture can encourage disease.

ICAR lists brinjal among vegetables cultivated in kharif conditions and recommends varieties suited to different regions.

Tomatoes can be grown at home, but August needs a little more care than a dry season. Continuous rain can leave foliage wet and soil saturated, creating problems for the plant.

If you are starting from seed, use a small container or seed tray initially. Once the seedlings are established, move them into a larger pot. Place the plant where it receives good sunlight and use a stake or support as it grows.

Tomato is cultivated during kharif conditions in India, although the best planting window varies by region and variety.

Lauki or bottle gourd is an excellent option if you have a terrace with room for a vine. The plant needs space to spread, so a strong trellis or similar support is important.

Use a large container with fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid allowing rainwater to collect around the roots.

Bottle gourd is recognised as a kharif crop, and ICAR lists varieties suitable for kharif and rabi cultivation.

Karela can also make good use of vertical terrace space. Instead of allowing the vine to crawl across the floor, train it upwards on a sturdy support.

Good drainage is particularly important during the monsoon. Waterlogged soil can damage roots, so make sure the container has unobstructed drainage holes.

Bitter gourd is among the cucurbit vegetables grown during the kharif season.

Ridge gourd is another vine that can be trained vertically. This makes it more suitable for a terrace than its size might initially suggest.

Give it a large enough container, sunlight and a strong trellis. ICAR lists ridge gourd varieties with early first picking in suitable growing conditions, although home-garden results will vary.

Pumpkin needs considerably more room than radish or beans, but it can still be grown on a terrace if you have space and a strong support system.

Its vines can spread widely, so plan where they will go before sowing. Keep the container away from areas where excess rainwater collects.

Pumpkin is among the cucurbit crops associated with kharif cultivation in India.

Cucumber can be another useful addition to a monsoon kitchen garden, particularly where temperatures remain warm.

Give the plant a large enough container, good drainage and a trellis. Training the vines upwards saves floor space and also improves air circulation around the plant.

ICAR includes cucumber among cucurbit vegetables suitable for kharif cultivation, while also stressing the importance of drainage during periods of heavy rain.

The most important August gardening rule

The biggest mistake during the monsoon is assuming that plants need extra watering simply because they are growing.

They don't. Check the soil first. If rain has already kept it damp, do not add more water. Make sure every pot has drainage holes and that excess water can escape freely.

Terrace gardeners should also watch for cloudy spells that reduce sunlight, remove damaged leaves and avoid overcrowding plants. For vegetables such as gourds and beans, provide support early rather than waiting until the vines become difficult to manage.

August can therefore be a rewarding month for a kitchen garden, but success depends less on planting a long list of vegetables and more on choosing crops suited to your local conditions. Foreign Assets Disclosure Scheme: Who Can Use FAST-DS And How Much Tax Will Apply?

The Income Tax Department has notified FAST-DS, allowing eligible small taxpayers to declare certain undisclosed foreign assets and income from August 16 to December 31, 2026. Taxpayers must pay 30 per cent tax plus an equal amount.

The Income Tax Department has notified rules for a new voluntary disclosure scheme that allows eligible small taxpayers to report certain undisclosed foreign assets and income without facing further tax, penalties or prosecution under the Black Money Act.

The Foreign Assets of Small Taxpayers-Disclosure Scheme, or FAST-DS, will come into effect on August 16, 2026. Online declarations can be filed until December 31, 2026.

Who is the scheme meant for?

The scheme was announced in the 2026-27 Union Budget with smaller taxpayers in mind. This includes students, young professionals, technology employees and non-resident Indians who have relocated and may have foreign assets or income that were not properly reported.

According to rules notified by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), eligible taxpayers can declare certain undisclosed foreign assets, foreign income or foreign assets that were not mentioned in the relevant income tax return.

The fair market value of an asset covered by the declaration will be calculated as on March 31, 2026.

The scheme broadly covers two types of cases.

The first involves an undisclosed asset outside India or foreign income that was not offered to tax. The combined value of the undisclosed asset in this category must not exceed Rs 1 crore.

The second covers foreign assets that had already been offered to tax or were acquired when the taxpayer was a non-resident but were not reported in the relevant schedule of the income tax return. In these cases, the value can be up to Rs 5 crore. A fee of Rs 1 lakh will apply to such declarations.

How much tax will taxpayers have to pay?

Taxpayers opting for FAST-DS will have to pay tax equal to 30 per cent of the value of the undisclosed foreign asset or income being declared.

An additional amount equal to the tax will also be payable. This effectively takes the total tax and additional levy to 60 per cent of the declared value, apart from the applicable Rs 1 lakh fee in the second category.

The CBDT explained the calculation through an example. If an undisclosed foreign bank account is valued at Rs 60 lakh and undisclosed foreign income amounts to Rs 20 lakh, the total value is Rs 80 lakh. Thirty per cent of this is Rs 24 lakh, with another Rs 24 lakh payable as the additional amount. The total comes to Rs 48 lakh.

A key benefit of the scheme is the immunity it provides for the assets and income covered by a valid declaration.

The taxpayer will not face further tax or penalty, or prosecution under the Black Money Act, 2015, in respect of the income or asset declared through the scheme.

The declared income or investment amount will also not be added to the taxpayer's total income under the Income-tax Act, 1961 or the Black Money Act.

Clean Your Plot or Pay: Bengaluru Starts Civic Clean-Up After Deadline Expires

Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda on Thursday launched the next phase of the city’s vacant-plot cleaning drive in Domlur, Shantinagar Assembly constituency, after the deadline given to private landowners expired. Under the Greater Bengaluru Authority’s 'Freedom from Waste' campaign, owners were initially asked to clean their vacant plots by August 15. The deadline was later extended to August 22 following requests for more time. With the extension now over, the five city corporations have been directed to identify neglected sites, issue notices to owners and begin cleaning work where required.

Owners may have to bear cleaning costs

The GBA has made it clear that maintaining a private vacant plot is primarily the owner's responsibility. If civic authorities have to step in and clean a site after the owner fails to act, the cost can be recovered through the property's tax bill.

Officials have been asked to prepare lists of plots that need cleaning. Notices will be served through marshals and junior health inspectors before civic action is taken. The five city corporations were directed to begin the drive from Thursday and intensify it further in the coming days.

The minister has urged owners to clean their properties themselves rather than wait for civic intervention, saying this would help them avoid additional costs.

The GBA has said charges for cleaning are based on the government's Schedule of Rates and depend on factors such as the size of the plot, the quantity of debris and the work involved.

Drive aims to tackle waste and sanitation concerns

Neglected vacant plots often become dumping grounds for construction debris, household waste and overgrown vegetation. They can also create sanitation concerns by attracting mosquitoes, rats, snakes and other pests.

Under the wider ‘Freedom from Waste’ campaign, the GBA and other agencies have been working to clear construction and demolition waste, debris and overgrown vegetation from public spaces across Bengaluru.

Before the campaign began, the authorities had identified around 22,700 tonnes of waste at 1,616 locations across the city. The clean-up involves coordination between the GBA, Bengaluru Development Authority, BESCOM, BMRCL, K-RIDE, KIADB and other agencies.

Geo-tagged proof and proper disposal

To improve accountability, the civic bodies have been directed to record before-and-after geo-tagged videos of every vacant plot cleaned by the authorities.

Waste and debris collected from these properties must be taken only to authorised disposal sites. The Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited has also been asked to track the process, from identifying the plot to cleaning and final disposal, through its ‘Clear It’ system. Citizens are also expected to get a facility to report neglected vacant plots.

The latest action marks a shift from voluntary compliance to enforcement. Bengaluru's message to owners is straightforward: clean your vacant plot, or the civic body may do it and recover the cost from you.

Despite attempts to prevent him from taking extreme steps, the situation escalated rapidly, culminating in the heartbreaking loss of the entire family. In a shocking incident reported from Meerut's apartment society in Ganga Nagar, a delivery agent was allegedly assaulted by a resident following a dispute over the order being delayed, leading to a physical confrontation that was entirely captured on surveillance cameras.

In viral CCTV footage, a man was seen physically confronting the delivery agent after his order was not delivered on time, resulting in an intense argument before the situation quickly spiraled out of control. The delivery agent appeared to be helpless, given the hostile behavior of the individual involved, as the dispute escalated far beyond a verbal disagreement.

Since delivery agents are often subjected to verbal abuse and harsh working conditions, this latest episode highlights a daily encounter for delivery personnel, where they have to constantly navigate high-pressure environments, public apathy, and physical vulnerability while trying to make a living.

How Did The Incident Unfold?

The shocking incident took place on the night of August 14, on the eve of India’s Independence Day, at Ganga Heights apartment in Meerut. The accused in the video appeared to have ordered the food, but the delivery agent ended up reaching the apartment complex later than expected.

In a viral clip, after the delivery agent rang the doorbell, the man came out and said something to him, reportedly identified as Amit, which led to a heated argument. The accused was seen snatching his mobile and assaulting him, while a woman, who came out of the flat, didn’t do anything to stop the attack, but instead joined the confrontation.

The situation escalated further when the accused dragged him inside their residence, and he was allegedly beaten up for some time and eventually allowed to leave, prompting local authorities to step in after the footage circulated widely online.

The terrifying video of the incident appeared to have shown that the physical vulnerability and safety of frontline gig workers remain severely compromised, as public accountability continues to lag behind the harsh realities they face on a daily basis.

It remains unclear what happened after the delivery agent was allegedly dragged inside the residence. However, reports stated that the accused threatened the victim, warning him that he would be falsely implicated in a sexual assault case if he reported the incident to anyone.

The Accused Absconding

The CCTV footage of the shocking incident went viral on social media and brought to the attention of the local authorities, who promptly initiated an investigation and launched a manhunt to trace and arrest the absconding resident.

The case has been registered against the accused based on the complaint filed by the victim, Amit, at Bhawanuan police station, and the police have registered a First Investigation Report (FIR) under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to the local police officer, Sudhir Kumar, a viral video of the shocking incident came to the police’s attention on social media, adding that the accused beat up the delivery agent for arriving five minutes late to deliver the food order, leading to swift legal action and ongoing efforts to track down the fleeing suspect.

Further speaking on the matter, Sudhir Kumar said the accused had been identified, and efforts were underway to locate him, while appropriate legal action would follow based on the findings of the investigation.

A bizarre yet hilarious incident took place in Kottayam’s Ettumanoor, where a driver caused massive traffic disruption after parking his car right in the middle of a busy road to take a nap on Athirampuzha-Ettumanoor Road on Wednesday, August 19.

In a video that went viral on social media, especially Instagram, the people were seen gathered around the stationary vehicle and shaking the car to check on the driver's condition, only to find that he was in deep sleep and completely unfazed by the commotion he had caused. Since the car was parked in the middle of the road, it obstructed the movement of other vehicles and caused a significant traffic jam.

Athirampuzha Ettumanoor Road is known for its heavy traffic during peak hours, and the sudden obstruction left commuters stranded, and vehicles were struggling to navigate around the stranded vehicle until law enforcement intervened to clear the road.

How Did the Bizarre Incident Unfold?

Athirampuzha Palli Junction, which comes under the limits of the Ettumanoor police station, witnessed chaotic scenes during the evening rush hour as motorists wondered why a vehicle had abruptly halted on the active lane.

The public, who spotted a red car parked right in the middle of the road, initially rushed over, fearing that the driver had suffered a medical emergency or suddenly fallen unconscious. In a viral video, people were seen shaking the vehicle from both sides to wake him up, but the man did not respond as he was fast asleep with an earphone plugged into one of his ears.

After the police arrived at the scene, it was reportedly discovered that the driver was in an inebriated state and thus fell asleep behind the wheel, leading officers to take both the driver and the vehicle into custody.

According to local reports, the driver has been identified as Jobin Johny, a native of Kangazha, which is located in the Kottayam district, and further legal procedures are underway as police investigate the incident.

The Ettumanoor police have registered a case against Jobin for driving under the influence of alcohol and obstructing traffic, with further legal proceedings underway.

The Drink and Driving Cases in Kerala

The recent incident of a driver falling asleep behind the wheel in the middle of a busy thoroughfare at Athirampuzha Palli Junction has once again put the spotlight on the growing concerns surrounding drunk driving and road safety across Kerala.

Over the last several years, the state of Kerala has witnessed persistent concerns over road safety, with rash and drunk driving continuing to pose serious risks to motorists and pedestrians. In 2025, Kerala recorded more than 1 crore traffic violations, while officials have repeatedly intensified enforcement against drunk driving and other dangerous road offences.

Last year, Kochi recorded 1,766 drunk-driving cases, a sharp decline from 5,422 cases in 2024 and 29,313 in 2023, according to police records. However, districts like Ernakulum, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kozhikode continued to witness drink-and-drive cases. In February this year, Thiruvananthapuram City Police booked 124 cases during a night inspection drive, including cases related to drunk driving and traffic obstruction.

The drink-and -drive cases in Kerala, especially in urban centers and major districts, continue to prompt strict monitoring and frequent special enforcement drives by law enforcement agencies.
