West Bengal recorded a huge 89.99% voter turnout by 5 pm in Phase 2 of Assembly elections, comfortably beating 80.4% seen in the same seats in 2021. Purba Bardhaman led with 92.46 per cent, while Kolkata North recorded 87.77 per cent. Officials expect the final figure to rise further. The phase is crucial as voting took place in TMC strongholds.

West Bengal recorded a massive voter turnout of around 90 per cent by 6 pm on Wednesday in the final phase of the Assembly elections. With polling still continuing for voters already in queues, the final figure is expected to rise even further. The turnout has already crossed the 80.4 per cent recorded in the same 142 seats during the 2021 Assembly elections. Strong grassroots campaigning, intense political rivalry and high public interest helped push turnout well above the 2021 level for the same constituencies.

The huge turnout showed strong public enthusiasm as polling for all 294 Assembly seats came to a close.

Purba Bardhaman tops the turnout chart

Purba Bardhaman recorded the highest turnout at 92.46 per cent by 5 pm. Hooghly followed with 90.34 per cent, while Nadia registered 90.28 per cent. Howrah saw 89.44 per cent voting. North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas also reported very high turnout, both remaining close to the 90 per cent mark.

High-stakes battle between TMC and BJP

The main contest is between the ruling All India Trinamool Congress, which is aiming for a fourth straight term, and the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is hoping for a major breakthrough in the state.

Campaigning in West Bengal has been intense, colourful and highly competitive. The ruling All India Trinamool Congress has focused on welfare schemes, Bengali identity and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's leadership.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has centred its campaign on corruption allegations, law and order and promises of political change.

Senior leaders from both parties have held massive rallies across the state, especially in South Bengal and Kolkata. Roadshows, door-to-door outreach, social media campaigns and local meetings have kept the election atmosphere charged. The high turnout suggests that voters are closely following the campaign and are eager to shape the state's future.

Final turnout may rise further

Polling stations officially closed in the evening, but anyone who entered before closing time will still be allowed to vote. Election officials believe the final turnout could move closer to the 95 per cent mark.

The huge participation shows strong public interest in this crucial phase of the election.

Earlier in the day, turnout had already touched 78.68 per cent by 3.30 pm, showing a steady flow of voters throughout the day.

High-stakes battle in Bengal

The second phase is being seen as extremely important. Voting has moved into South Bengal and Kolkata, areas considered traditional strongholds of the ruling Trinamool Congress.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is aiming for another victory, while the Bharatiya Janata Party is trying hard to expand its footprint in the state.

The contest is widely seen as a direct fight between the TMC and the BJP.

Massive polling arrangements

The Election Commission set up 41,001 polling stations for this phase. These included 39,301 main polling stations and 1,700 auxiliary booths.

A total of 8,845 polling stations were managed entirely by women. There were also 13 booths managed by persons with disabilities and 258 model polling stations.

Webcasting was arranged at every single polling station to ensure smooth and transparent voting.

Key leaders cast votes

Several senior leaders and candidates were seen voting during the day. These included Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya, TMC MP Mitali Bag, and BJP candidate Ratna Debnath.

Despite the peaceful voting in most places, some areas reported clashes and allegations of intimidation. Both the TMC and the BJP accused each other of trying to influence voters.

Results on May 4

Votes will be counted on May 4. Results for West Bengal will be announced along with Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

With such a high turnout, Phase 2 has become one of the most closely watched stages of the election.

(With ANI inputs)

The accused allegedly entered his neighbour’s house, pushed her, and assaulted her.

He is accused of covering her mouth, strangling her, and throwing her to the floor before raping her. The victim also reported that he bit her at several places.

Before leaving around 11 pm, he allegedly threatened her, warning her not to tell anyone. He reportedly said he would kill her and her family if she spoke out.

An FIR was registered by Alwar Police after the woman filed a complaint.

Just hours later, the accused travelled to Delhi. Police say he reached a housing society in Amar Colony, in south-east Delhi, around 6:30 am.

At about 6:39 am, he allegedly entered the home of his former employer. The victim, a 22-year-old engineering graduate preparing for UPSC exams, was alone at home as her parents had gone to the gym.

The accused left the house around 7:30 am.

When the parents returned at about 8 am, they found their daughter lying in a pool of blood. Her clothes were torn, and she was partially unclothed from the waist down. The house appeared disturbed, with items scattered.

Preliminary investigation suggests she may have been raped and then strangled, possibly using a mobile phone charger cable. However, police said confirmation of sexual assault will depend on the medical report.

A case of rape, murder, and robbery has been registered.

Delhi Police quickly formed 15 teams to track the suspect.

CCTV cameras played a key role. It was only when some of the liquid entered his mouth that he realised it was acid, according to a report by Dainik Bhaskar.

"It tasted sour. That is when I understood she had thrown acid on me," he said.

Long-running dispute between the couple

Hemant, a jeweller, lives in Khairullah Shah with his four-year-old daughter, Arya. He married Shilpi, 32, six years ago. She is originally from Lakhimpur.

According to Hemant, problems began about a year after their marriage. He claimed he discovered that his wife was involved in a relationship with another man.

He said he informed her family, but the issue only made matters worse.

Legal battle for five years

The couple have been involved in a bitter dispute for nearly five years. In 2021, Shilpi filed a dowry harassment case against Hemant and later moved back to her parents' home in Lakhimpur.

Hemant has also accused his wife of having an affair. He claimed that a man named Vimal used to visit his house when he was away and alleged that he had caught them together. He said he has evidence to support his claims.

These allegations have not been independently verified.

Divorce notice increased tensions

Hemant said he filed for divorce because of the ongoing problems in the marriage. According to him, matters became even worse after Shilpi received the divorce notice in February 2026.

He alleged that despite the divorce case, she repeatedly tried to enter his house. He also claimed that police had called him to the station several times and even took action against him for breach of peace.

Incident unfolded after police left

On Sunday at around 4 pm, Shilpi arrived in Pilibhit from Lakhimpur and allegedly created a scene outside Hemant's house. Hemant called the police emergency helpline, Dial 112. A police team reached the spot, but later left as no female police officer was present.

Soon after, Shilpi allegedly forced her way into the house.

Hemant was on the second floor at the time. As he came out of his room near the grilled gate, Shilpi allegedly threw acid at him from the other side.

Both taken to hospital

Some acid splashed back onto Shilpi during the attack, leaving her with burn injuries as well.

Both were rushed to the district hospital for treatment. Doctors are closely monitoring Hemant, whose condition remains serious.

City Kotwal Satyendra Kumar said the matter is being investigated thoroughly.

He assured that police would conduct a fair and impartial probe and take action based on the evidence. Further legal action will depend on the findings of the investigation and the statements of both sides.

Police said a 27-year-old man allegedly stabbed a woman and her daughter to death before trying to kill himself. The incident happened in a flat under the Bolinj Police Station area in Palghar district, according to news agency Press Trust of India.

Victims and accused identified

The two victims have been identified as Saeeda Mishra, 50, and her daughter Nancy Mishra, 25. The accused, Shivam Upadayaya, is a resident of Nallasopara. He was seriously injured after allegedly stabbing himself and is currently being treated in hospital.

Marriage proposal may be the motive

Police suspect the crime was linked to a rejected marriage proposal. According to investigators, Shivam wanted to marry Nancy. However, Nancy's mother strongly opposed the relationship, the PTI report added. On Wednesday morning, he went to their flat, where an argument broke out.

Attack inside locked flat

Police said Shivam allegedly locked the flat from inside during the argument. In a violent attack, he stabbed both Saeeda and Nancy several times with a knife. Both died at the scene.

After the attack, he allegedly turned the knife on himself and suffered serious injuries.

Neighbours raised the alarm

The sound of shouting and breaking glass alerted neighbours. Window panes shattered and pieces of glass fell outside the building. Residents quickly informed the police.

When officers arrived, the accused refused to open the door. The fire brigade was called to help break into the flat.

Disturbing scene inside

Police found the mother and daughter lying in a pool of blood. The accused was also found inside with self-inflicted stab wounds. Investigators said signs of struggle and broken glass suggested that the two women fought desperately to save themselves.

Neighbours said the family had moved into the area only about a year ago and usually kept to themselves. Bolinj Police have registered a murder case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The investigation is continuing.

(With inputs from agencies)

A young man was allegedly beaten to death by three brothers in Gujarat's Amreli district, police said. The shocking incident took place near Bhakshi village in Rajula taluka. The victim, identified as Dinesh Solanki, had earlier been in a relationship with a woman named Sonal. About a year ago, Dinesh had eloped with her and taken her to Morbi. Sonal returned to her family after around two months, but tensions between both families never fully ended. Police said Sonal's brothers had allegedly threatened Dinesh several times since then.

How the attack happened

On April 18, Dinesh travelled from Morbi to Bhakshi village to collect farm labourers. Later that evening, he went to a friend's farm and was sitting there. At around 8.30 pm, three men arrived on a motorcycle. Police identified them as Rajesh alias Rakesh Solanki, Sursingh Solanki and Kewal Solanki.

The accused allegedly took Dinesh a short distance away to a secluded spot. There, they confronted him over his past relationship with their sister.

— AajTak (@aajtak) April 24, 2026

— Gujarat Samachar (@gujratsamachar) April 22, 2026

Beaten with belts and rope

According to police, the three brothers brutally attacked Dinesh.

Axis My India has predicted Vijay's TVK's stunning debut in Tamil Nadu, projecting 98-120 seats, close to majority mark. Poll places TVK neck-and-neck with ruling DMK alliance and far ahead of AIADMK-led bloc. Strong youth support, demand for change and Vijay's popularity have led to surge. If correct, TN may witness its biggest political shake-up.

Tamil Nadu could be heading towards one of its biggest political changes in decades. An Axis My India exit poll has predicted a stunning debut for actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The survey suggests TVK could win between 98 and 120 seats in the 234-member Assembly. That would put the party very close to the majority mark of 118 seats. If the prediction proves correct, TVK could become the state's biggest political story overnight.

Close fight with DMK

The ruling DMK-led alliance is projected to win between 92 and 110 seats. The AIADMK-led alliance is estimated at just 22 to 32 seats.

This means Tamil Nadu could see a three-cornered contest, with TVK emerging as a powerful new player.

TVK is also expected to secure around 35 per cent of the vote. That is almost equal to the DMK-led alliance. The AIADMK-BJP alliance is projected to get around 23 per cent.

Why this is historic

Axis My India chairman Pradeep Gupta compared Vijay's rise to that of legendary leaders MG Ramachandran in Tamil Nadu and NT Rama Rao in Andhra Pradesh.

That is a huge comparison.

Both MGR and NTR changed politics in their states soon after entering public life. Vijay now appears to be following a similar path.

For a party fighting its first election, these numbers are extraordinary.

Youth voters drive TVK's rise

One of the biggest reasons behind TVK's strong performance appears to be young voters.

According to the exit poll:

68 per cent of first-time voters aged 18 to 19 backed TVK

59 per cent of voters aged 20 to 29 supported the party

45 per cent of those aged 30 to 39 also favoured Vijay

This shows TVK has become the top choice among younger voters, especially students, unemployed youth and urban residents.

The demand for change

Many voters seem to want a fresh alternative. Around 35 per cent of all voters said "change" was the main reason behind their choice.

Among TVK supporters, that number rises sharply to 77 per cent.

Vijay's personal popularity has also played a major role. Many voters said they supported the party because of him.

Support across communities

TVK's appeal is not limited to one section of society. The exit poll shows the party has gained support among OBC communities, Scheduled Castes, minority groups, urban voters and rural residents.

That broad support is one reason why TVK has performed so strongly across the state.

While its biggest strength is in cities, the party has also made significant gains in villages and smaller towns.

Vijay edges ahead in CM race

The survey also shows a tight race for the chief minister's post. Vijay is the preferred choice of 37 per cent of voters.

Chief Minister MK Stalin is just behind at 35 per cent.

For a first-time candidate, this is a remarkable achievement.

What the exit poll means for Tamil Nadu

If these projections are accurate, Tamil Nadu's traditional two-party system could be changing. For decades, the main battle was between the DMK and AIADMK.

Now, TVK has emerged as a serious challenger.

It could become the largest party, play kingmaker in a hung Assembly, or establish itself as a long-term political force.

A note of caution: Exit polls are only predictions. They can sometimes be wrong. Tamil Nadu has often surprised pollsters in the past.

In fact, other surveys have painted a very different picture.

People's Pulse has projected the DMK-led alliance to win 125 to 145 seats. It estimates TVK at only 18 to 24 seats.

The Matrize poll also puts the DMK alliance ahead with 122 to 132 seats, while TVK is projected to win just 10 to 12 seats.

Even if the final result differs, one thing is clear. Vijay is no longer just a film star entering politics. He is now at the centre of Tamil Nadu's political battle.

Whether he forms the government or not, TVK has already changed the conversation.

Tamil Nadu politics may never be the same again.

A 26-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide in Andhra Pradesh's YSR Kadapa district after her fiancé reportedly told her that he was not attracted to her and was involved with other women. The woman, identified as Rehana, was found hanging at her home under the Chinna Chowk police station limits. Police have launched an investigation into the case.

Wedding was planned for August

Rehana, a postgraduate who had completed her MSc, was a resident of Kadapa. She got engaged to Shajahan, a native of Proddatur, on February 15 this year.

Shajahan works for an IT company in Bengaluru. The couple's wedding had been fixed for August. After the engagement, they remained in regular contact and spoke frequently over phone calls and messages.

Fiancé allegedly became distant

According to Rehana's family, Shajahan's behaviour changed as the wedding date approached.

He allegedly told her that he did not like her and was not attracted to her. He also reportedly claimed that he already had four girlfriends.

At first, Rehana believed he was joking. But when he continued making such remarks, she became deeply upset.

Suicide note recovered

Police said Rehana left behind a 12-page suicide note in which she reportedly detailed her emotional distress and the events leading up to her death.

After receiving information, officers reached the house, recovered the letter and sent her body for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered based on a complaint filed by Rehana's father.

Family makes serious allegations

Rehana's parents said their daughter had been depressed for several days.

They also alleged that Shajahan was addicted to alcohol and had relationships with several women. According to them, he had agreed to the marriage only because of pressure from his family.

They claimed they were unaware of these details before the engagement.

Fiancé missing, police searching

Soon after the case was registered, Shajahan reportedly went missing. Police are now trying to trace him and are examining all aspects of the case.

The incident has left Rehana's family devastated and has shocked the local community.

Authorities have urged people facing emotional distress to seek help from family members, friends or mental health professionals.

A wedding in Kerala's Kottayam has gone viral on social media for a touching reason. The video shows a Christian priest performing 'kanyadaan', a key Hindu wedding ritual, for a young bride he helped raise. The moment has been widely praised as a strong example of kindness and unity across religions.

Bride's emotional journey

The bride, Parvathy, had a difficult childhood. She lost her mother when she was just one year old and grew up at the Bethlehem Ashram orphanage in Mundakkayam. During this time, Father Roy Mathew became an important part of her life.

    View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Goodness News (@goodness__news)

As a member of the Orphanage Control Board, he looked after the institution. But for Parvathy, he became much more than that. Over the years, he acted as a father figure, guiding and supporting her as she grew up.

Also Read: Fake 'Civil War' Video Debunked By Government, Linked To Cylinder Blast Incident

A priest who stepped in as family

When Parvathy was ready to get married, Father Roy took the responsibility of finding a suitable match for her. He eventually found Ananthu, a man from Kattappana, and the wedding was arranged.

The ceremony was held at the parish hall of St. Paul’s Church. Even though the venue was a church, the wedding followed Hindu traditions fully.

A special kanyadaan moment

One of the most emotional moments came during the ‘kanyadaan’ ritual. This is when a father gives his daughter’s hand to the groom. In this case, Father Roy performed the ritual himself, standing in place of Parvathy’s late parent.

For him, it was not just a ritual. He later said it was one of the most meaningful moments of his life as a priest.

Also Read: MP Horror!

A heartwarming video from IIT Kharagpur in West Bengal is winning hearts online. The clip shows a professor celebrating his birthday with students in a warm and friendly way. The video has gone viral, not for studies or exams, but for kindness and human connection.

Professor celebrates with students

The video features Aurobinda Routray, who chose to celebrate his birthday with his students. Instead of a formal classroom, the event took place outdoors, creating a relaxed and happy atmosphere.

Students are seen gathering around as the professor cuts a chocolate cake. They cheer and enjoy the moment together.

    View this post on Instagram
A post shared by PRIYANSH M (@unseen_iit)

A gesture that stood out

What made the moment special was what happened next. Instead of being served, Professor Routray personally served food to his students.

He handed out plates and cutlery and made sure everyone was comfortable. The meal included pasta, ice cream, pooris, rice, dal, and different curries.

Students were seen enjoying the food together, making it feel more like a family gathering than a college event.

Video goes viral on social media

The video was shared by a student on Instagram. It quickly gained attention, with many users praising the professor’s simple and kind gesture.

The caption read, “Your professor invited you for his birthday,” which added to the emotional appeal of the video.

Soon, people across social media began reacting, sharing their thoughts and memories.

Internet reacts with joy and nostalgia

Many users said the video reminded them of their college days. Some former students even shared their own experiences with Professor Routray.

One user wrote that the professor had once invited them home during a project. Another called him “very friendly” and said he always replies to emails.

Some joked that their own professors would call the video fake or AI-generated. Others expressed a bit of envy, wishing they had such experiences in college.

A few comments were mixed, but most reactions praised the professor’s humble and caring nature.

More than just a viral clip

The video highlights something important. It shows how small gestures can create strong bonds between teachers and students.

In many places, classrooms are strict and formal. But moments like these remind people that learning is also about connection and respect.

Professor Routray’s celebration has become a symbol of a positive and friendly mentor-student relationship.

A shocking case of domestic violence has come to light from Kamareddy district in Telangana, where a man was allegedly killed by his wife after an argument at home. The incident took place in Vambe Colony and has left local residents deeply disturbed. Police have identified the victim as Kodanda Shivaji, a daily wage labourer. He lived in a rented house with his wife, Lakshmi, and their two young daughters. The family depended on Shivaji's daily earnings for survival.

Argument reportedly began over dinner

According to police and local sources, the couple got into an argument on Saturday night. The dispute reportedly started when Shivaji became upset over non-vegetarian food not being prepared at home.

During the argument, Shivaji is also said to have expressed frustration over the family's poor financial condition. As the discussion continued, tempers rose quickly, according to a report by Aaj Tak.

What began as a small disagreement soon turned into a serious fight inside their home.

Husband dies after sharp weapon attack

Police said Lakshmi allegedly attacked Shivaji with a sharp weapon kept in the house. He suffered a deep injury to his neck.

The wound proved fatal, and Shivaji died on the spot before help could arrive.

Neighbours informed the police after learning about the incident. Officers reached the house soon after and took control of the situation.

Wife taken into custody

Shivaji's body was sent for post-mortem examination. Lakshmi was taken into custody, and a case has been registered against her.

Kamareddy Circle Inspector Narahari confirmed the incident. He said police are investigating all aspects of the case to understand exactly what happened.

At present, domestic conflict appears to be the main reason behind the killing, though the investigation is still underway.

Two young daughters left behind

The tragedy has had a devastating impact on the couple's two daughters, who are only two years and one year old.

In a single night, they lost their father and saw their mother taken away by police.

Residents of the area said they were shocked by the sudden violence. Many described the family as financially weak and struggling to make ends meet.

A reminder of growing family stress

This case once again highlights how financial pressure and emotional stress can sometimes lead to tragic consequences.

Small arguments can quickly spiral out of control, especially when families are already under strain.

Police are continuing their investigation and are expected to record statements from neighbours and relatives.

The heartbreaking incident has left an entire neighbourhood saddened, while two little children now face an uncertain future.

Pune City Police have asked three American nationals to leave India by May 10, 2026, after finding that they were allegedly involved in activities not allowed under their tourist visas. The three men, aged 53, 65 and 66, had arrived in India between April 19 and April 21.

What police found

According to Pune Police, the three were visiting India on tourist visas. However, an enquiry found that they were allegedly distributing religious pamphlets and speaking to local people about Christianity. Police said such activities are not allowed under a tourist visa.

The order was issued under the Immigration and Foreigners Act after officials concluded that the visa rules had been violated.

How the case came to light

The matter surfaced on April 27 in Pune's Shukrawar Peth area. Police said the three approached a private cab driver and handed him pamphlets printed in English, Hindi and Marathi. They also allegedly tried to convince him about their religious beliefs.

The cab driver became suspicious and informed police officers who were deployed nearby for a rally.

Police enquiry and action

The three foreigners were taken to a local police station, where officers checked their passports and visa documents.

A search of their belongings reportedly led to the recovery of a large quantity of religious literature.

The Foreigners Registration Office then carried out a detailed enquiry. Officials found that the trio had allegedly breached the conditions of their tourist visas by engaging in religious preaching and teaching.

Deadline to leave India

Based on the findings, Pune Police issued a "Leave India Notice". The three American nationals have been directed to leave the country on or before May 10, 2026.

Authorities have said the action was taken strictly under immigration rules.

A video from Kochi is going viral on social media, and people cannot stop talking about it. The clip shows a Punjabi man speaking Malayalam very fluently. What makes the video special is how natural and confident he sounds. Many viewers said they had to watch it twice because they did not expect a Punjabi man to speak Malayalam so easily.

Who is the man in the video

The man in the viral clip is Mohinder Singh Sethi. He runs Sethi Da Dhaba, a popular food spot in the city. In an interview with Manorama Online, he answered questions fully in Malayalam. A Punjabi dhaba owner speaking Malayalam like a local is not something people see every day.

Viewers said his accent and comfort with the language made the video more interesting. Many noted that he did not struggle at all and spoke like someone who has grown up in Kerala.

Social media reactions pour in

The response online has been largely positive. Many users praised him for learning the local language and respecting the culture.

One user wrote that more people should learn local languages when they move to a new place. Another said he sounded like a “perfect Malayali”.

Some comments even joked that he might be “Malayali at heart”. Others said they were impressed by how clearly he spoke difficult Malayalam words.

The video quickly spread across platforms, with thousands of likes and shares.

Shashi Tharoor joins the conversation

The viral clip also caught the attention of Shashi Tharoor. Reacting to the video on X, he said it was wonderful to hear Sethi speak so fluently. He also pointed out that Sethi was born and brought up in Kerala, which explains his strong command of the language.

Tharoor called the moment a perfect example of India’s 'unity in diversity'.

Wonderful to hear him articulate so fluently his satisfaction and appreciation for Keralites’ enjoyment of Punjabi food! Running a dhaba means he interacts with local customers daily. Over time, this helped him learn Malayalam in a natural way.

Being closely connected to the local community likely made it easier for him to pick up the language and speak it confidently.

A simple moment with a bigger message

What started as a normal interview has now turned into a viral moment. The video shows how language can bring people closer. It also highlights how people from different backgrounds can adapt and connect with local cultures.

For many viewers, the clip is a reminder that India’s diversity is one of its biggest strengths.

The remark brought laughter from the crowd.

He further pointed out that the road and footpath where Modi stood were built by the Mamata Banerjee government.

Employment Claims And Attack On BJP

Banerjee raised questions about employment under BJP-ruled states.

He said the jhalmuri seller Modi met in Jhargram was originally from Gaya in Bihar.

"If BJP's double-engine government has created so many jobs, why is a boy from Bihar selling jhalmuri in Bengal?" he asked.

He also claimed that the TMC government had created 1.12 crore jobs in West Bengal's MSME sector over the past ten years.

TMC Confident Despite BJP Push

Banerjee said that despite the presence of central forces, the Enforcement Directorate, the Election Commission and support from BJP chief ministers, the people of Bengal had made up their minds.

He claimed that all surveys showed the TMC returning to power for a fourth consecutive term.

According to him, the final answer from Bengal's voters will become clear when results are announced on May 4.

(With inputs from agencies)

A man posing as a customer robbed a jewellery shop in Greater Noida by spraying a substance into the shopkeeper’s eyes and fleeing with seven gold rings. The incident, caught on CCTV, shows the accused pretending to take photos before attacking.

A shocking robbery took place at a jewellery shop in the Kasna police station area of Greater Noida. The incident happened in broad daylight and has raised concerns about safety in the area.

According to police, an unknown man entered the shop and fled with seven gold rings after attacking the shopkeeper.

The victim, Hempal Verma, said the accused came to the shop pretending to be a genuine customer. He told the shopkeeper that he wanted to buy rings for his wife.

The man asked to see several gold rings and selected seven of them. He then started trying them on his fingers.

He also clicked photos and even made a phone call, acting as if he was asking someone for advice or opinion before making a purchase.

When the shopkeeper objected to him taking photos, the accused said he needed to send them to his wife. Within seconds, he took out a spray from his pocket and sprayed it into the shopkeeper’s eyes.

The sudden attack left the shopkeeper unable to react immediately. Before he could fully understand what had happened, the accused ran away with the rings.

The shopkeeper tried to stop him, but the attacker had already escaped.

CCTV footage goes viral

The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed inside the shop. The footage has now gone viral on social media.

In the video, the man can be seen calmly checking the rings, wearing them, and pretending to take photos. He also appears to make a phone call before carrying out the attack.

— Ajay Kumar Dwivedi...

UP's prepaid smart meter rollout has triggered protests over high bills, faulty readings, forced installations and power cuts. Villagers and city residents have taken to streets, demanding return to old meters. Govt has paused rollout, ordered review

Uttar Pradesh has been trying to modernise its electricity system by installing prepaid smart meters. These meters were meant to make billing easier, reduce power theft and help people track their electricity use in real time.

But instead of smooth change, the rollout has led to anger, confusion and protests across many districts. People have complained about high bills, faulty readings, power cuts and poor service. The issue has now become serious enough that the state government has paused the rollout and ordered a review.

This explainer breaks down what went wrong, what people are saying, and what the government is doing now.

What are prepaid smart meters?

A prepaid smart meter is like a mobile recharge system for electricity. Consumers must add money in advance to keep using power. The meter shows real-time usage and balance through an app or SMS alerts. The idea behind this system is simple:

No monthly bills or surprises

Better control over electricity use

Less power theft

Faster payments for power companies

In theory, it sounds useful. But in practice, many users in Uttar Pradesh say it has not worked as promised.

Across districts like Lucknow, Kanpur, Jalaun, Aligarh and Noida, people have raised several complaints.

1. Sudden spike in electricity bills

Many consumers say their bills increased sharply after smart meters were installed. Some reported that:

Bills that were earlier ₹700-₹800 jumped to ₹7,000-₹8,000

Charges did not match actual usage

They could not understand how units were calculated

This has created fear and mistrust among users.

2. Meters installed without consent

Another major issue is forced installation. Residents say:

Old meters were replaced without asking them

Officials installed new meters during routine checks

Consumers were not given proper information

This has raised concerns about consumer rights and choice.

3. Power cuts despite positive balance

Some users reported losing electricity even when they had money left in their account. Others said:

Power was cut for small negative balances

Disconnections happened suddenly without warning

This defeats the purpose of a prepaid system, where people expect control over their usage.

4. App and technical issues

The system depends heavily on digital tools like apps and SMS alerts. But users say these tools are not reliable. Common complaints include:

The app does not update usage properly

Balance information is delayed or wrong

Recharges do not reflect immediately

These glitches have made the system confusing, especially for people who are not comfortable with technology.

As complaints increased, protests began in several parts of the state.

Jalaun: meters thrown on streets

In Jalaun district, villagers protested strongly:

Smart meters were removed and thrown on roads

People blocked roads

They claimed bills rose sharply after installation

Police later booked over 70 people after clashes, according to a report by Aaj Tak.

Aligarh: officials chased away

In Aligarh:

Women surrounded a power department officer

They accused the department of cheating and wrong billing

The officer had to leave the spot due to public anger

Noida and Lucknow: mass protests

In urban areas like Noida and Lucknow:

Residents blocked substations

Women, elderly people and children joined protests

People demanded a return to old postpaid meters

Local leaders also supported these protests, saying people were unhappy with the new system.

The meter of the anger of UP's public is running high against the electricity scam being run in the name of smart meters, because they have realized that the real reason behind unnecessarily high meter readings and skyrocketing electricity bills is BJP's corruption. The public… pic.twitter.com/BYH49yBNfn

— Ambedkarwadi (@ambedkarwadi_X) April 20, 2026

Despite the backlash, the state had strong reasons to introduce prepaid smart meters.

Part of a national reform plan

The rollout is linked to the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), a central government programme aimed at improving power supply. Goals of the scheme include:

Reducing power theft

Cutting financial losses Improving billing efficiency

Modernising electricity systems

Large-scale rollout in Uttar Pradesh

According to a report by India Today, the state planned a massive change:

Around 3.5 crore old meters to be replaced

Over 78 lakh smart meters already installed

More than 70 lakh working in prepaid mode

New connections have been given prepaid meters since September 2025.

Expected benefits

Officials believed smart meters would:

End billing disputes

Give real-time usage data

Reduce electricity theft

Remove need for security deposits

In other states like Bihar and Assam, reports suggest the system has helped improve revenue and reduce losses.

As protests grew stronger, authorities were forced to act.

Regulator steps in

The Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) took notice of complaints. It asked the state power company to:

Submit a detailed report

Explain billing issues and complaints

Check if rules were followed

The report must be submitted within 10 days.

Government pauses rollout

The state government has now:

Stopped replacing existing meters

Paused the rollout temporarily

Allowed review of the system

However, new electricity connections will still get prepaid meters.

Technical committee formed

A four-member expert team has been set up to study the issue, according to an Indian Express report. It includes experts from:

IIT Kanpur

ERDA Vadodara

State power corporation

The committee will:

Check meter accuracy

Review billing systems

Study complaints

Its report is expected within 10 days.

To reduce stress for consumers, the government has announced several relief steps.

1. Power even after balance runs out

Consumers will still get electricity:

For up to 3 days after balance ends

Or until ₹200 usage for small connections

2. No disconnection for 45 days (new meters)

New users will get:

15 days conversion period

30 extra days without disconnection

This gives time to understand the system.

3. SMS alert system

A new alert system will warn users at different stages:

When balance reaches 30%

When it drops to 10%

When balance becomes zero

One day before disconnection

After disconnection

4. No cuts on holidays

Electricity will not be disconnected:

On Sundays

On public holidays

Officials say this is to ensure a more humane approach.

5. Better complaint system

The government has improved support services:

Toll-free number 1912

UPPCL website

WhatsApp chatbot

Local contact numbers

Officials have been told to track complaints daily and fix issues quickly.

6. Awareness campaign

A public awareness drive has been launched:

Information about smart meters

FAQs to clear doubts

Guidance on using the system

Earlier on April 3, the Union Power Minister, as mentioned by a Times of India report clarified an important point. He said, smart meters are optional and consumers cannot be forced to install them. They are meant to give benefits, not create pressure.

This statement added weight to complaints about forced installations.

Why trust has become a big issue

Even though smart meters promise benefits, the biggest challenge now is trust. People are worried because:

Bills appear unpredictable

Technology is not working smoothly

They feel forced into the system

Complaints are not resolved quickly

For many families, electricity bills are a major expense. Any sudden increase creates stress and anger.

Lessons from other states

Some states have seen better results with smart meters.

Bihar

Reported improved billing

Used AI to detect power theft

Generated extra revenue

Assam

Installed over 50 lakh smart meters

Saved large amounts in electricity costs

Improved billing accuracy

These examples show that the system can work, but only if implemented properly.

The future of prepaid smart meters in Uttar Pradesh depends on the findings of the technical committee. Key questions include:

Are the meters accurate?

Is billing transparent?

Are apps and systems reliable?

Are consumers being treated fairly?

If these issues are fixed, the rollout may continue. If not, the government may need to rethink its approach.

The bigger picture

The smart meter issue is not just about technology. It is about how reforms are carried out. For any big change to succeed:

People must trust the system

Technology must work smoothly

Communication must be clear

Consumer rights must be respected

Without these, even good ideas can fail.

The prepaid smart meter plan in Uttar Pradesh started as a major reform to improve power supply and reduce losses.

But on the ground, it has led to confusion, complaints and protests.

The government has now paused the rollout and offered relief to consumers. The next steps will depend on the technical review and how quickly problems are fixed.

(With inputs from agencies)

A snapshot of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee went viral on social media when eagle-eyed users noticed something unusual: she looked to be wearing three fitness trackers at the same time.

Abhishek Singhal, a tech and fitness instructor, brought up the subject on X, saying, "This photo of Mamata Banerjee got viral because she's wearing a Whoop, Apple Watch, and Oura Ring. All three. At the same moment.

This photo of Mamata Banerjee went viral because she's wearing a Whoop, Apple Watch, and Oura Ring. All three. I use this data to instruct fitness. And I have opinions. Here's everything I've learned," which sparked a bigger conversation about wearable technology and health tracking.

The photograph of Banerjee cradling a kid while clad in her typical white saree drew attention not just for the moment, but also for the subtle detail of several wearables on her wrist and hand.

Check out the post here.

This photo of Mamata Banerjee went viral because she's wearing a Whoop, Apple Watch, and Oura Ring. It doesn't come close to Oura or Whoop, which is good. "That is not its job."

OURA RING 4: The Sleep MachineBought the Stealth model in December 2024. He notably mentioned its Resilience Metric, which evaluated how the body balanced stress and recuperation over 14 days, concentrating on patterns rather than individual nights.

He said that Oura's finger-based sensor technology, which includes an 18-path sensor array, provided more precise readings, as evidenced by research comparing it to medical-grade sleep tracking.

He stressed Whoop's strain-recovery loop as a game changer. "Every morning, you wake up with a Recovery Score (0-100%). "The data decides, not the ego," he said, describing how it helped adjust exercises to true physical preparedness rather than guessing. He also lauded the Sleep Coach, which determined how much sleep a person need based on tension, sleep debt, and habits. Singhal has had this gadget on his wrist at all times.

In another post, Singhal described how he used all three fitness monitors in his daily training sessions, saying that when a client's fat reduction plateaued, most trainers would just cut more calories. He, on the other hand, decided to review their data first.

OURA RING 4: The Sleep MachineBought the Stealth model in December 2024. Haven't taken it off since. It tracks sleep stages (light, deep, REM), HRV overnight, resting heart rate, body temperature deviation, blood oxygen, sleep latency, and gives you a daily Readiness Score.… pic.twitter.com/4i6ql1u9G7

— Abhishek Singhal | Tech Professionals FitnessCoach (@trainedbyabhi) April 10, 2026

When HRV fell for a week, he suspected that recovery was jeopardised. Rather of decreasing meals, he would lower workout volume.

If a client slept less than 6.5 hours for 5 or more days, he might identify where the plateau was lurking. With such knowledge, he was able to modify his client's food and training regimen, ensuring they did not overtrain without realising it.

If you're wondering if you should buy all three, Abhishek Singhal offers a straightforward answer: probably not.

He recommended that novices stick to the essentials, such as tracking steps, nutrition, and sleep, while serious users pick only one gadget based on their priorities - sleep, training, or all-around use.

Only those who are really committed to data-driven fitness will benefit from several gadgets; nonetheless, essentials such as protein consumption, walking, and sleep are more important than any technology

A year after the Pahalgam terror attack, new details reveal how an Indian Air Force unit in Sirsa intercepted a Pak ballistic missile aimed at Delhi during Op Sindoor. Led by Air Commodore Rohit Kapil, the Barak-8 system stopped the threat mid-air.

On April 22, 2025, India was shaken by a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, a popular tourist spot in Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan-backed terrorists entered a village and killed 26 innocent people. The attack shocked the country and left many families broken.

As India marks one year since that day, attention has turned to a major but lesser-known moment that followed, when a possible missile strike on the national capital was stopped in time.

Missile threat during peak tension

During the height of the India-Pakistan conflict in May 2025, a serious threat emerged. A Pakistani ballistic missile, believed to be from the Fateh or Shaheen series, was launched and was heading towards India.

The suspected target was Delhi.

The situation was critical. A successful strike could have caused large-scale damage and loss of life.

At this crucial moment, an Indian Air Force (IAF) unit stationed in Sirsa, Haryana, stepped in.

Sirsa is an important forward air base located close to the western border. Because of its position, it plays a major role in India’s air defence system.

The unit detected the incoming missile and acted quickly.

Mid-air interception saves lives

The IAF unit successfully intercepted the missile in mid-air over Haryana before it could reach its target.

The interception was carried out using the Barak-8 surface-to-air missile system, according to a report by India Today. This system is known for its ability to detect and destroy incoming threats at long range.

The quick response ensured that the missile was neutralised safely, preventing a possible disaster.

The operation was led by Air Commodore Rohit Kapil, who was the Air Officer Commanding of the 45 Wing at Sirsa.

His leadership and quick decisions played a key role in the success of the mission.

Air Commodore Kapil is also a Su-30MKI fighter pilot and has led an operational squadron in the past.

His experience helped guide the team during a very tense situation.

Recognition for bravery and planning

For his role during the conflict, Air Commodore Kapil was awarded the Yudh Seva Medal in 2025.

The award was given by President Droupadi Murmu in recognition of his leadership and service during active operations.

His work included both defensive actions, like intercepting threats, and planning offensive responses.

Days after the interception, debris was found in Sirsa.

The recovered parts confirmed the scale of the threat and showed how close India had come to a major escalation.

Made a tweet on the night of 10th May when this happened and again on 19th May when I was confirmed it was a ballistic missile. The Derby footage is in the quoted tweet. The man who shot it down was Air Commodore Rohit Kapil who commanded an MRSAM battery at Sirsa.Source:… https://t.co/XZU5ktzfNo pic.twitter.com/SGuc97aEuf

— (@Kunal_Biswas707) April 21, 2026

At the time, images and videos of the debris were widely shared, drawing public attention.

Even a year later, this remains a strong reminder of the danger India faced.

After the Pahalgam attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025.

The aim was to target terror groups operating from Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).

Indian forces carried out strikes on nine major terror launchpads linked to groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen.

More than 100 terrorists were killed during the operation.

Escalation and four-day conflict

Following India’s strikes, Pakistan responded with drone attacks and shelling.

This led to a four-day conflict between the two countries.

India responded strongly, carrying out counter-strikes and damaging key Pakistani military targets.

Radar installations in Lahore and facilities near Gujranwala were destroyed.

The situation remained tense until Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) contacted his Indian counterpart.

A ceasefire was agreed on May 10, bringing the immediate conflict to an end.

In another major success, Indian forces carried out Operation Mahadev.

This operation focused on tracking down the terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack.

Security forces managed to find and eliminate three terrorists linked to the attack.

Non-military steps taken by India

Apart from military action, India also took strong non-military steps.

The government decided to end the Indus Waters Treaty and stopped all bilateral trade with Pakistan.

These decisions were seen as part of a broader response to the attack and ongoing tensions.

On April 21, 2026, just a day before the anniversary, the Indian Army sent a clear message.

In a post on X, the Army said that when 'boundaries of humanity are crossed, the response is decisive'.

The message also stated that India does not forget such acts.

This was a reminder of the country’s stand against terrorism.

While security forces acted strongly, families of the victims are still dealing with their loss.

The wife of Prasanta Kumar Satapathy, who died in the Pahalgam attack, shared her struggle.

She said life has not been the same since her husband’s death. He was the main earner of the family.

She now works in a temporary job just to manage daily expenses.

She also said that although financial help was given, a government job promised to her has not yet been provided.

She has asked the government to fulfil its promise as soon as possible.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that any terror attack on India will get a strong reply.

He made it clear that India will not separate terrorists from those who support them.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that Operation Sindoor is still ongoing in spirit.

Tri-service coordination praised

Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi described Operation Sindoor as a strong example of coordination between the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

He said the operation showed how all three services worked together under clear political direction.

Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh also called the operation a defining moment.

He said it showed the Indian Air Force’s strength, accuracy, and unity.

Role of Navy in the conflict

The Indian Navy also played an important role.

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi said that deploying a carrier battle group in the northern Arabian Sea affected Pakistan’s naval movement.

This forced Pakistani naval forces to stay closer to their own ports.

On Independence Day 2025, Prime Minister Modi announced Mission Sudarshan Chakra.

This plan aims to improve India’s defence system and make it stronger against future threats.

It focuses on better coordination, faster response, and improved technology.

Building a stronger air defence system

India is working on a multi-layered air defence system under the Sudarshan programme.

This includes advanced systems like S-400, Barak-8, and other indigenous interceptors.

The aim is to create a strong shield that can stop threats at different levels.

Why Sirsa interception matters today

The interception over Sirsa stands out as a key moment.

It showed how quick action, good planning, and modern technology can prevent disaster.

It also highlighted the importance of being ready at all times.

As India remembers the Pahalgam attack, this moment serves as a reminder that vigilance and preparedness can save lives.

(With ANI inputs)

A dispute over leftover food at a community kitchen in Gujarat's Amreli has ended in tragedy. A 24-year-old man, Maheshbhai Rathod, died two days after he was allegedly attacked by seven men at the hospital premises. The incident took place on April 17 at the annakshetra operating behind Amreli Civil Hospital.

Argument began over unfinished food

Maheshbhai had accompanied his father to the hospital for treatment. Around noon, he went to the community kitchen for lunch.

While eating, he reportedly felt unwell and could not finish his meal. As he tried to return his plate, the canteen operator, Bharatbhai Acharya, allegedly stopped him.

According to the complaint, Acharya told him to either finish the remaining food or pay a fine of Rs 50, according to a report by Times Now.

Fight quickly escalated

Maheshbhai agreed to pay and handed over a Rs 500 note. However, when he asked for the remaining change, an argument broke out.

Police said Acharya allegedly asked Maheshbhai about his caste during the dispute. Soon after, he reportedly called several others to the spot.

Within minutes, six more men arrived.

Alleged assault by seven men

The FIR states that all seven accused attacked Maheshbhai with plastic pipes.

He suffered serious injuries to his head, hands and other parts of his body. His family members rushed to the scene and managed to stop the assault.

Maheshbhai was immediately admitted to the trauma centre at Amreli Civil Hospital.

Death after two days

Police registered a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Two days later, Maheshbhai reportedly fell from the trauma centre and died. The exact circumstances surrounding the fall are still being investigated.

Family demands murder charge

Maheshbhai's family believes the assault directly led to his death. They have demanded that police add Section 302, relating to murder, to the FIR.

The family has also refused to accept his body until stronger charges are filed against the accused. Police, however, have said that current evidence does not yet establish a direct link between the assault and Maheshbhai's death.

The matter has now reached court.

Property prices in South Bengaluru, especially in JP Nagar and Bannerghatta Road, could rise by 20% to 40% over the next two years, according to a new report. The biggest reason is the upcoming Namma Metro Yellow and Pink Lines, which will improve connectivity across the city. Experts say this could be a great time for investors.

Bengaluru (Apr 24): Our very own Silicon City, Bengaluru, is growing at a crazy pace, and its real estate market is feeling the heat. If you've been eyeing property in South Bengaluru, listen up. A new report says prices in prime spots like JP Nagar and Bannerghatta Road could shoot up by a massive 20% to 40% in just the next two years.

So, what's causing the price hike?

The main reason for this massive price jump is the Namma Metro project. The upcoming Yellow and Pink Lines are set to connect South Bengaluru to the rest of the city like never before. This improved transport link has already pushed up the demand for property in these areas.

The Metro's Magic Touch:

It's simple logic: when getting around becomes easier, more people want to live there. The Metro means no more traffic headaches, which is a huge plus for IT professionals and investors. The Yellow Line will link up to IT hubs like Electronic City, while the Pink Line will make getting to the city centre a breeze. Because of this, prices for apartments, plots, and even commercial shops around JP Nagar and Bannerghatta Road are all set to explode.

Is this a golden opportunity for investors?

Real estate experts seem to think so. They say if you're planning to buy a house or a plot in Bengaluru, now is the time. Investing before prices hit their peak could mean a profit of up to 40% in the next two years. Plus, rental rates in these areas are already on the rise, giving homeowners a nice extra income.

What are the challenges here?

On one hand, property prices are soaring. On the other, buying a home is becoming a distant dream for the middle class. The demand is so high that real estate deals are happening left, right, and centre. With less land available, it's highly unlikely that prices will come down anytime soon.

Overall, the Namma Metro expansion is completely changing the game for South Bengaluru. So, will you invest now or wait for prices to drop? Market analysts warn that waiting could cost you more than you think.
