Political parties in Kerala have already gone into celebration mode as the state prepares for Monday's vote count, with workers preparing extravagant feasts of laddoos and biryani even before the outcome is announced. As the crucial Assembly election draws closer to its conclusion, the atmosphere in both sides is one of optimism and expectation.

In anticipation of a win, workers from the Congress and United Democratic Front (UDF) have started making biryani for about 5,000 people in Pandikkad in the Malappuram district. As part of the festivities, food will be provided from a sizable tent that has been erected in the vicinity. According to party members, 16 sizable cooking containers, each holding around 40 kg of rice, have been set up. In addition to cuisine, cultural events are scheduled to commemorate what is anticipated to be a major political victory.

“We will celebrate the end of 10 years of LDF rule. We welcome everyone, including CPI(M) workers," a Congress worker said, adding that preparations are in full swing. The UDF will continue to keep its grip in Malappuram, according to local authorities.

A sizable pandal has been built at the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee's (KPCC) headquarters, Indira Bhavan, ahead of the results. In addition to setting up LED screens and chairs for leaders to observe the counting procedure together, party leaders have ordered candies to be distributed.

Manakkad Suresh, the head of the Congress, stated that the party anticipates a resounding majority. "The UDF will secure a clear majority and win the election by 12 noon on Monday," he said, adding that all top figures had been invited.

NDA Places Massive Order For Laddoos

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has already placed a massive order for laddoos in anticipation of the festivities in Kochi. Party members intend to establish their account this time, even though the coalition presently has no seats in the Kerala Assembly.

Additionally, party leaders have created signs with candidates they believe would win important seats including Nemom, Kazhakootam, Manjeshwar, Palakkad, and Thiruvalla. According to leaders, citizens want the political climate in the state to change.

In the meantime, the Election Commission has finished setting up 140 centers in 43 different sites for counting. Over 15,000 people have been mobilised, and counting is set to start under strict security on Monday at 8 a.m.

Thiruvananthapuram: Police believe that the intense pressure from loan apps was a major reason behind the death of Nithin Raj, a student at Ancharakandy Dental College. According to the police, these loan apps are becoming a huge social threat. A shocking police report has revealed that loan app gangs have looted a staggering ₹70 crore from Kerala in the last three years.

The data also shows that one in every five victims is a housewife, and most people who complain don't follow through with a legal case. Out of all the people who sought help from the Kerala Police's cyber wing after getting trapped by various loan apps, only 20% were willing to file a formal case.

Also read: Mysuru Woman Saves Mother-in-Law from Leopard, Receives Nomination for Bravery Award

Loan App Fraud in Kerala

Across the state, Malappuram district has the highest number of complaints related to these loan apps. The report also says that most of the money transactions are traced back to Bihar and Rajasthan. What makes these loan apps so attractive is that they provide quick cash to people in urgent need. However, the sky-high interest rates, blackmail, and threats that follow if a payment is missed are ruining many lives. Despite action being taken against hundreds of such apps, these scams continue to operate even today.

ADGP S. Sreejith, who is in charge of Cyber Operations, warned people to be fully aware of the traps set by online apps. He advised everyone to take loans only through proper government-approved channels and to "have the courage to say no to these offers." "These people are ready with easy money, but they demand 10 to 15 times the amount back," Sreejith explained.

"If you don't pay up, they resort to activities that will completely ruin your reputation." He pointed out that many of these apps use APK files, breaking all the rules. "These loan apps are basically using our privacy and honour as collateral. Every person must make a firm decision to take loans only from RBI-approved banks," Sreejith urged.

Also read: Anjanadri Hill: Grandson Carries 90-Year-Old Grandma Up 575 Steps for Hanuman Darshan

Thiruvananthapuram: An open letter urging the new Chief Minister of Kerala to make sure his official travel doesn't cause trouble for the common person is going viral. Prashanth Vasudev Nair, the former Deputy Director of the Tourism Department, has made this request, urging the new leader to stop the practice of massive traffic restrictions and oversized convoys. Prashanth in his Facebook post says that the routine of switching off traffic lights on the CM's route must end.

He argues that the Chief Minister's travel should not come at the cost of the public's freedom of movement. He suggests that one pilot and one escort vehicle are enough, and there's no need for a long line of officials' cars. He also questions the need for a jammer vehicle within Kerala and a permanent ambulance in the convoy, assuming the new CM is in good health. Prashanth also called for removing the excessive security cordon around Cliff House, the CM's official residence, saying, "Nobody is going to attack you here."

Full text of the letter

"This is for the new Chief Minister of Kerala.

Sir,

I have been a resident of Thiruvananthapuram city for over 15 years. This means I have lived in the city when the great humanitarian Oommen Chandy was Chief Minister, and also when Pinarayi Vijayan was the Chief Minister.

Sir,

For the last ten years, we city residents have often been denied our freedom to travel. Suddenly, the traffic lights would be switched off, our roads would be blocked, and then the Chief Minister's convoy would speed past, terrorising all of us who voted these people into power. We were too scared to say anything. If we did, we would have been in trouble!

Sir,

There was an unnecessary police guard at the Devaswom Board Junction, which leads to Cliff House. Some poor policemen also stood guard in the biting cold on the side road to Charachira. I don't know who was afraid of whom, Sir. And yet, nothing happened to anyone.

Sir,

When you travel through these city streets, please do not switch off the traffic lights. I know your time is more valuable than ours. There must be ways to manage it, but it shouldn't be by denying us our right to travel.

Sir,

The security cordon around Cliff House should be removed, Sir. Nobody is going to attack you here. And even if some terrorists show up, these four or five policemen won't be able to do anything. I don't know if the people who lost power will now try to scare you! They will surely try to justify the old ways by getting the intelligence department to give you a report about a fake threat, forcing you to accept the same excessive security. You must be careful about that. That was all just a delusion of power, Sir. Please do not fall for such delusions of power and luxurious comforts. The people will be watching. And someday, what happened now will happen again.

And Sir,

Let's talk about travel outside Thiruvananthapuram. One pilot and one escort vehicle in the front and back are enough. We need to rethink if a jammer is really needed within Kerala, Sir. Whoever you are, I don't think you are in such poor health. In that case, I don't think a permanent ambulance is needed either. The vehicles of other officials should not be part of the escort.

Sir,

A Chief Minister's dignity should not be compromised at all. But the convoy should be such that it allows us to see you as one of us. We have many such hopes. Let's hope they are not broken."

How people reacted to the open letter online

People strongly supported the letter and said it reflects the feelings of ordinary citizens. Many agreed that traffic should not be blocked for VIP convoys and that public time must be respected. Several users called the suggestions practical and hoped the new Chief Minister would follow them.

Some criticised past governments for causing inconvenience, while others stressed that leaders are not above the people. Overall, the reactions showed wide public frustration with convoy culture and a clear demand for simpler, people-friendly governance

Rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz are affecting global trade routes. This narrow waterway is one of the busiest in the world for oil and cargo movement. As risks increase in the region, many shipping companies are looking for safer and more stable alternatives. This shift has unexpectedly brought attention to Vizhinjam Port in Kerala.

Shashi Tharoor highlights new opportunity

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that the situation has created a big opportunity for India. In a post on X, he shared that nearly 100 ships are either waiting or trying to get space at Vizhinjam Port. He said global shipping is now turning its attention to his constituency, Thiruvananthapuram.

100 ships. One destination. The Strait of Hormuz crisis has shifted global shipping eyes to my constituency! Thiruvananthapuram’s Vizhinjam Port is currently seeing a massive surge with 100 vessels in queue or seeking calls. From handling its 1 millionth TEU in record time to… pic.twitter.com/QykvSldpTB

— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) April 18, 2026

Tharoor called this moment important for India’s growing role in global trade.

Also Read: Two Sikh Men Shot Dead Outside Temple In Italy, Gunmen Fired 10 Bullets

Rapid growth at Vizhinjam Port

Vizhinjam is India’s first deep-water transshipment port. It allows large cargo ships to transfer goods efficiently.

The port has shown fast growth in a short time. It handled its one millionth TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) in record time, making it one of the fastest-growing ports in the country.

In March 2026 alone, the port handled 61 vessels, its highest monthly number so far.

Record performance in first year

According to a report by The Hindu, the port has set strong records in its first year. It handled around 12.96 lakh TEUs, which is more than its planned capacity of one million TEUs. This shows strong demand for its services.

A total of 607 ships visited the port, including some of the largest cargo vessels in the world.

Why companies are choosing Vizhinjam

The problems in the Strait of Hormuz have made shipping companies look for safer routes. Vizhinjam is now seen as a reliable option.

Its location near major international shipping lanes makes it attractive. It also has modern facilities and deep waters, which allow large ships to dock easily.

Tharoor said the port is becoming a “global necessity” as trade routes change.

Expansion plans and future capacity

Work is already underway to expand the port. The next phase will allow up to five large motherships to dock at the same time.

This will increase the port’s capacity and help it handle more cargo. Authorities are moving quickly to complete this expansion.

Also Read: 5-Year-Old Boy Killed In Telangana, Mother And Partner Arrested

Missed opportunities due to delays

Despite its success, the port has also faced some challenges.

Due to delays in expanding infrastructure, it could not handle all the demand during the peak of the Hormuz crisis. Some shipping requests had to be turned away.

Experts say that improving infrastructure faster could help India gain even more from this global shift.

Competing with global ports

Tharoor believes Vizhinjam can compete with major global ports like Colombo and Singapore.

He said the port is not just competing but setting new standards in transshipment.

With strong growth and ongoing upgrades, Vizhinjam is quickly becoming an important player in global shipping.

India’s chance to grow in global trade

The rise of Vizhinjam shows how global challenges can create new opportunities.

As tensions continue to reshape trade routes, India has a chance to strengthen its position in global shipping.

With better planning and faster development, ports like Vizhinjam could play a key role in the future of international trade.

The UDF's massive win was less about their own brilliance and more about the LDF's series of blunders. The Left front's organizational arrogance, a shift from its secular stand, and internal squabbles proved to be its undoing. The UDF simply took advantage of these mistakes with a united and focused campaign.

Thiruvananthapuram: While there are many factors that worked in the UDF's favour, the truth is that the LDF, which was aiming for a continuous term, gifted the victory to the UDF with its own mistakes. The LDF was confident of a third term, but the UDF scored big in every area where the Left faltered. The Left front's decision to dilute its core policies and compromise its secular image for a few extra votes led to this humiliating defeat. The election result is also a tight slap on the face of the CPM leadership for its organizational arrogance. The answer to why LDF lost, or why UDF won, isn't a simple one.

LDF leadership

While the LDF claimed ten years of continuous rule brought development, its own party structure suffered serious damage. The leadership was arrogant, thinking power was the only solution. Their working style became disconnected from the people, and they suppressed any voice of dissent. The Left's hallmark was always secularism, but this time, their leaders' speeches were found attacking minority religious leaderships in public. Whenever these allegations surfaced, the leaders would just double down and justify their stance. The UDF, however, did its homework and managed to convey the seriousness of this shift to the public without losing its intensity.

Community leaders like Vellappally Natesan made hateful speeches against minorities, and despite claiming to be on the Left, the CPM leadership didn't even bother to correct him. As a result, when forces like Jamaat-e-Islami tried to convert the public sentiment that arose after the CAA protests into votes, the Left front walked right into the trap. On top of all this, the leadership's greed for parliamentary posts created deep cracks even in the party's strongholds. M.V. Govindan did not ask Syamala to step aside, even when there were clear signs of dissent among the party workers.

The leadership also failed to pacify senior leaders who expressed their grievances with the party's methods. In the end, the very people who were sidelined and mocked for their 'parliamentary ambitions' became a thorn in the party's side in its own forts. Coming to the campaign issues, the government's achievements didn't click with the voters, and even controversies like Sabarimala didn't have a major impact on the voting. Even Pinarayi Vijayan had to sweat it out in his own constituency. If you look at the leaders who won easily, you'll see they weren't just party faces. Their victory had more to do with their personal merit and influence in the constituency than any major contribution from the party or the front.

Left's politics

The Left's politics was born from protests, but its government's attitude towards recent protests, like the ASHA and nurses' strikes, disappointed even its core supporters. This created a lot of sympathy for the protesters among women who interact with these groups. The LDF also couldn't counter the narrative of the 'Sabarimala gold smuggling'—a ghost unleashed by the Global Ayyappa Sangamam.

The fact that the BJP didn't effectively use this issue helped consolidate Hindu votes in favour of the Congress. The Congress, on its part, worked hard to keep the Christian communities, who were leaning towards the BJP, on their side. They cleverly used the FCRA issue to their advantage. The Congress also effectively used the Jamaat-e-Islami allegation against the LDF during the final days of the campaign. While the CPM strongly opposed Jamaat-e-Islami, it had no answer to the allegation that it was taking support from the SDPI. The CPM also didn't take the allegation of having a 'deal' with the BJP seriously enough.

With so much anti-LDF sentiment building up, things were relatively easy for the UDF. The Congress did have some of its usual last-minute drama during candidate selection, but this time, they were much faster and more decisive than before. They managed to project a united front until the elections were over and had a clear strategy on what campaign issues to focus on. The Congress, leading the UDF, carefully handled potentially damaging allegations like the Wayanad rehabilitation issue. The incredible self-confidence shown by the Leader of the Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, and the energetic campaigning by young crowd-pullers like Shafi Parambil, motivated the entire Congress machinery to stand with the UDF.

UDF's success

The UDF was successful in highlighting local issues like price hikes and increases in fees, electricity bills, and water bills during their local campaigns. It seems a certain 'magic' worked for them this time, allowing them to connect deeply with the people even without a formal cadre system. Their excellent performance in the local body elections gave them a ready-made army of local representatives who campaigned for them.

They managed to create a feeling that the ruling leaders had been disconnected from the public for ten years. The UDF positioned itself as the alternative, stayed ahead on social media trends, and that's what laid the foundation for this UDF wave, which many didn't see coming.

The monsoon, which usually arrives in Kerala around June 1, is expected to hit the coast early this year, sometime in the last week of May (between May 25 and June 1). This prediction comes from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.

Southwest Monsoon

The report says that strong westerly winds are forming over the southeast Arabian Sea. This could bring a lot of moisture to Kerala and the southern parts of Tamil Nadu. If this happens, the monsoon could start in Kerala as early as May 25.

Also read: Karnataka Heatwave Alert: Health Department Orders Heat Stroke Management Rooms in All Hospitals

The monsoon is expected to reach the Andaman and Nicobar Islands between May 18 and May 25, and the rest of South India by the end of May.

Chikkamagaluru: The search for a 14-year-old girl from Kerala, Shrinanda, who went missing during a trip to Chikkamagaluru, has ended in tragedy. Her body was found in a deep gorge. She had come to Manikyadhara falls with her family on April 7th and mysteriously disappeared around 5:30 PM that evening. Her family and locals immediately started a search, which was soon joined by the police and other rescue teams.

After three days of non-stop searching, a team moving from the Arishinaguppe area found the girl's body about 5 kilometres away, inside a deep gorge. The gorge is said to be around 1500 feet deep. Getting her body out was a huge challenge for the rescue teams because the area is extremely difficult to access.

Police are initially suspecting it could be a case of suicide and are investigating from all angles. However, her family believes she might have accidentally slipped and fallen. The police have launched a detailed investigation to find out the exact cause of her death.

Also read: Bengaluru Shocker: 11-Year-Old Girl Allegedly Assaulted in Jnanabharathi; ₹150 Clue Leads to Accused’s Arrest

Background of the Incident

A large family group of 40 people from Kerala had come to Chikkamagaluru for a summer vacation trip. The 14-year-old girl went missing from the famous Manikyadhara waterfall, located in the foothills of Datta Peetha, around 5:30 PM. Her body has now been found after a three-day search.

A massive search operation was launched to find her. More than 60 personnel from the police, Forest Department, Fire Department, a dog squad, and the SDRF were involved. They formed 5 separate teams to search the forest. Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre had also ordered the use of a thermal camera drone to help find Shrinanda in the Chandradrona mountain range.

Vanished in a Second

On that day, all the family members were walking down the steps at Manikyadhara together. While the others were ahead, Shrinanda was walking right behind them. But when they looked back at a turn, she was gone. She had vanished in a split second in the middle of the dense forest. The panicked family searched everywhere but found no trace of her. The big question now is whether she was attacked by a wild animal, accidentally fell into the gorge, or if it was suicide. The truth will only come out after the medical examination is complete.

Also read: Shivamogga Landslide Tragedy: 3 Workers Buried Alive as Hill Collapses at Hulikal Ghat

A man from Kerala turned a simple room into a cinematic rain set, all to shoot a toy car video, and ended up catching the attention of global automobile brands online. The now-viral video was posted on Instagram by user Krishna S. Pai, providing viewers with a behind-the-scenes peek into the illusion's creation. In order to create a dramatic, ground-level view, Krishna was seen in the movie reclining flat on the ground and meticulously putting his camera on a tripod at a low angle.

What first appeared disorganised quickly began to make sense. He continually sprayed water into the air with a spray bottle, which, when seen through the lens, gave the impression of intense rain or a blizzard. Lighting, perspective, and timing all worked together to turn an unremarkable area into something much more dramatic, despite the setup's simplicity.

The video then cut to the finished product, which showed a toy automobile stopped in the midst of a violent storm with what appeared to be sheets of rain falling all around it. Given how basic the instruments were, the illusion was impressive.

Watch Viral Video

Krishna captioned the post with a cheeky line: “Made a whole rain scene just in case Porsche is scrolling.” What followed next made the moment even bigger.

    View this post on Instagram
A post shared by (@_krishna_pai_)

Social Media Reacts

Major automakers were also impressed by the clip, in addition to spectators.

Porsche responded to the video, writing, “That’s some serious scene-building. Respect the effort. There's no way we're scrolling past this.” Audi also chimed in, commenting, “Proof that even simple tools can create something extraordinary. Beautifully done!”

Several people noted how uncommon it was for international corporations to interact directly with such imaginative content, and their comments turned became the post's main feature.

In addition to the corporate shout-outs, viewers expressed their enthusiasm for the setup's inventiveness in the comments area. A number of people said that the creator's utilisation of commonplace objects to create a high-production look was both amazing and motivating.

While some applauded the effort and attention to detail that went into creating the illusion, others quipped that the film had effectively "summoned" leading automakers into the comments area.

The video was notable for its deft execution rather than its costly technology or intricate settings. It also sparked a number of conversations on how often all it takes to create visually striking content was a solid idea, a little perseverance, and a willingness to try new things rather than large expenditures.

The moment has been widely praised as a strong example of kindness and unity across religions.

Bride's emotional journey

The bride, Parvathy, had a difficult childhood. She lost her mother when she was just one year old and grew up at the Bethlehem Ashram orphanage in Mundakkayam. During this time, Father Roy Mathew became an important part of her life.

    View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Goodness News (@goodness__news)

As a member of the Orphanage Control Board, he looked after the institution. But for Parvathy, he became much more than that. Over the years, he acted as a father figure, guiding and supporting her as she grew up.

Also Read: Fake 'Civil War' Video Debunked By Government, Linked To Cylinder Blast Incident

A priest who stepped in as family

When Parvathy was ready to get married, Father Roy took the responsibility of finding a suitable match for her. He eventually found Ananthu, a man from Kattappana, and the wedding was arranged.

The ceremony was held at the parish hall of St. Paul’s Church. Even though the venue was a church, the wedding followed Hindu traditions fully.

A special kanyadaan moment

One of the most emotional moments came during the ‘kanyadaan’ ritual. This is when a father gives his daughter’s hand to the groom. In this case, Father Roy performed the ritual himself, standing in place of Parvathy’s late parent.

For him, it was not just a ritual. He later said it was one of the most meaningful moments of his life as a priest.

Also Read: MP Horror!

A video from Kochi is going viral on social media, and people cannot stop talking about it. The clip shows a Punjabi man speaking Malayalam very fluently. What makes the video special is how natural and confident he sounds. Many viewers said they had to watch it twice because they did not expect a Punjabi man to speak Malayalam so easily.

Who is the man in the video

The man in the viral clip is Mohinder Singh Sethi. He runs Sethi Da Dhaba, a popular food spot in the city. In an interview with Manorama Online, he answered questions fully in Malayalam. His smooth speaking style surprised many people online.

    View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Manorama Online (@manoramaonline)

What made the video stand out

The biggest reason behind the video’s popularity is the contrast. A Punjabi dhaba owner speaking Malayalam like a local is not something people see every day.

Viewers said his accent and comfort with the language made the video more interesting. Many noted that he did not struggle at all and spoke like someone who has grown up in Kerala.

Social media reactions pour in

The response online has been largely positive. Many users praised him for learning the local language and respecting the culture.

One user wrote that more people should learn local languages when they move to a new place. Another said he sounded like a “perfect Malayali”.

Some comments even joked that he might be “Malayali at heart”. Others said they were impressed by how clearly he spoke difficult Malayalam words.

The video quickly spread across platforms, with thousands of likes and shares.

Shashi Tharoor joins the conversation

The viral clip also caught the attention of Shashi Tharoor. Reacting to the video on X, he said it was wonderful to hear Sethi speak so fluently. He also pointed out that Sethi was born and brought up in Kerala, which explains his strong command of the language.

Tharoor called the moment a perfect example of India’s 'unity in diversity'.

Wonderful to hear him articulate so fluently his satisfaction and appreciation for Keralites’ enjoyment of Punjabi food! Born and brought up in Kerala, so his fluency is no surprise— but great to hear amid the incongruity of his appearance! Running a dhaba means he interacts with local customers daily. Over time, this helped him learn Malayalam in a natural way.

Being closely connected to the local community likely made it easier for him to pick up the language and speak it confidently.

A simple moment with a bigger message

What started as a normal interview has now turned into a viral moment. The video shows how language can bring people closer. It also highlights how people from different backgrounds can adapt and connect with local cultures.

For many viewers, the clip is a reminder that India’s diversity is one of its biggest strengths.

A man from Haripad in Alappuzha has been cheated out of a massive ₹25,30,028. The fraudsters trapped him with a fake Facebook ad that promised a low-interest personal loan. The victim, 46-year-old Premkumar from Pallippad, fell for the huge financial scam. The cyber police have now filed a case and started an investigation.

The whole incident began on January 27. Premkumar saw a fake advertisement on Facebook, which looked like it was from the well-known company Bajaj Finserv. He applied for a loan of ₹3 lakh. Soon after, the scammers contacted him, pretending to be executives from the company. They used various mobile numbers to send him WhatsApp messages and make voice calls. They told him he needed to pay a 'processing fee' to get his loan approved.

Also read: Why Bengaluru Is So Hot in 2026: El Niño and Urban Heat Island Effects Explained

Loan Fraud in Kerala

After losing the initial amount, Premkumar tried to back out. But the scammers came back with a new story. They promised they could use 'cyber help' to recover his lost money. This time, they contacted him on the Signal app. They convinced him that they had successfully 'hacked' and recovered his money, and had even invested it in the stock market. To withdraw this so-called recovered money, they said he had to pay more for 'tax' and 'clearance charges'. They kept demanding more money in multiple instalments.

Between January 28 and April 18, Premkumar made 127 transfers to the scammers. The money was sent from his accounts at the SBI Vallappuzha branch and the Indian Overseas Bank Haripad branch. He finally realised he had been cheated when he received neither the loan nor his money back.

Also read: Karnataka: Man's 'Leaf Helmet' Jugaad in Chamarajanagar to Beat the Heat Goes Viral; Sparks Road Safety Debate

Rajeev Chandrasekhar of the Bharatiya Janata Party has won the Nemom Assembly seat by a margin of about 3,800 votes, after a closely fought contest. Nemom has been a key constituency for the BJP, as it was the first seat from where the party had earlier entered the Kerala Assembly.

His main rival, V. Sivankutty of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), secured 39,147 votes. K. S. Sabarinathan of the Indian National Congress finished third with 23,099 votes.

The contest in Nemom turned into a three-cornered fight between the NDA, LDF and UDF candidates. The constituency includes 23 wards under the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. The BJP entered the race with confidence after performing strongly in these wards during the 2025 local body elections, where it had built a lead of over 6,000 votes.

With the state party president himself in the fray, the BJP maintained an early lead from the start of counting and held on to it till the final result.

BJP credits development pitch on Rajeev Chandrasekhar's early lead in Nemom

The Kerala unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party said the early lead of Rajeev Chandrasekhar in Nemom reflects public support for its “development-focused politics.”

ഒരു അഴിമതിരഹിത… pic.twitter.com/iiPVV7koWx

— BJP KERALAM (@BJP4Keralam) May 4, 2026

Earlier, in a post on X, the party claimed voters rejected both Left and Congress-led fronts and backed a “corruption-free” representative. It added that Nemom is expected to see faster development aligned with the Centre’s growth agenda under Narendra Modi.

Nemom’s political history: A key battleground in Kerala

The Nemom Assembly constituency has seen three elections since its formation, and each contest has been closely watched. V. Sivankutty of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) contested all three elections as the LDF candidate.

In 2011, Sivankutty defeated O. Rajagopal. However, the tables turned in 2016, when Rajagopal made history by becoming the first BJP MLA from Kerala by winning the seat.

2016 election: BJP’s breakthrough win

In the 2016 Assembly election, Rajagopal secured around 47.46% of the vote, while Sivankutty polled about 41.39%. The UDF candidate, from an ally, managed only 9.7% of the votes.

The LDF later argued that the BJP’s victory was made possible because the UDF fielded a weaker candidate instead of a strong Congress nominee. This, they claimed, led to a split in anti-LDF votes and helped the BJP gain a historic win.

2021 election: LDF regains control

In 2021, Sivankutty reclaimed the Nemom seat for the LDF by defeating Kummanam Rajasekharan, who contested for the BJP after Rajagopal stepped aside.

This win was seen as significant, as it ended the BJP’s presence in the Kerala Assembly from Nemom and reversed the gains made in 2016.

Role of UDF and shifting vote share

Political observers have often pointed to the UDF’s strategy as a key factor in Nemom's results over the years. In 2011 and 2016, the seat was given to allies, and the UDF’s vote share remained low at around 17.4% and 9.7% respectively.

However, when the Indian National Congress contested the seat directly in 2021, the UDF’s vote share rose sharply to around 25%, showing stronger voter support.

BJP’s continued focus on Nemom

Nemom has remained a priority seat for the BJP due to its past success and organisational strength. The party built on its performance in local body elections and continued to invest resources and leadership attention in the constituency.

Leaders like Rajeev Chandrasekhar were brought in with the aim of strengthening the party’s position, reflecting its long-term strategy to expand its footprint in Kerala.

With exit polls and early trends in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections indictating a potential comeback for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), attention has swiftly shifted to the crucial question: who will be the next Chief Minister if the alliance secures a mandate. The leadership race within the Congress appears to be shaping into a contest between seasoned experience and emerging leadership.

Satheesan vs Chennithala: The Main Contenders

Two names dominate the conversation—V.D. Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala. Satheesan, the current Leader of the Opposition, is widely credited with energising the Congress-led opposition and presenting a cohesive challenge to the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF). His assertive leadership style and ability to unify factions have strengthened his claim to the top post.

On the other hand, veteran leader Ramesh Chennithala remains a formidable contender. A former Leader of the Opposition and a senior Congress figure, his administrative experience and long-standing position within the party make him a strong choice, especially among traditionalists. Party insiders suggest his seniority could weigh heavily when the final decision is made.

Adding an important dimension, senior Congress leader P.J. Kurien has clarified the selection process, stating, “There are three names under consideration,” while emphasising that the final call will be taken by the party’s central leadership after the election results.

Also Read: Kerala Elections: UDF breaches halfway mark, leads in over 82 seats

High Command, Allies to Play Key Role

While names like K.C. Venugopal were initially discussed, reports suggest he may not be in the immediate race to avoid internal friction. Meanwhile, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has also featured in public discussions and opinion polls, though party leaders maintain that the decision will not be based on popularity alone.

Kurien underscored the party’s approach, noting that the Congress high command will consult elected MLAs before arriving at a consensus candidate. This reflects the party’s strategy to ensure unity and avoid factional disputes at a critical juncture.

Allies within the UDF, particularly the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), are expected to play a decisive role. As the coalition’s second-largest partner, IUML’s support could be crucial, especially in the event of a narrow victory margin.

There has also been speculation about a possible term-sharing arrangement between leading contenders, although party sources indicate that a clear and unified leadership decision is the preferred outcome.

As Kerala awaits the final results, the CM race highlights the Congress’s balancing act between experience, performance, and alliance dynamics. The outcome will not only determine the state’s leadership but also shape the party’s broader political direction in the region.

Also Read: ‘Exit Polls Have Problems’: Shashi Tharoor Dodges Next Kerala CM Question as UDF Eyes Win

Counting of votes for Kerala’s 140 Assembly constituencies is underway, with trends beginning to show how the election is shaping up after polling on April 9. The state has recorded a strong turnout of 79.63 per cent, reflecting high public interest. Kerala has a long political history, from E. M. S. Namboodiripad forming the world’s first elected communist government in 1957, to decades of power shifts between the UDF and Left Front.

Kerala has once again shown strong voter participation. The Election Commission recorded a turnout of 79.63 per cent, reflecting high public interest in this election.

UDF surges ahead in early trends

As counting progressed, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) moved ahead in the race. By around 4 pm, the UDF was leading in about 69 seats, bringing it close to the majority mark of 71 in the 140-member Assembly.

On the other hand, the Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, was trailing with leads in around 22 seats. These numbers are still changing, but they show a clear advantage for the UDF at this stage.

If these trends continue, Kerala could see a change in government after nearly a decade of LDF rule.

Setbacks for several ministers

Early trends also suggest that several ministers from the ruling LDF are facing tough contests in their constituencies. Reports indicate that at least a dozen ministers were trailing at different stages of counting.

This reflects a strong challenge from the opposition and suggests that voters may be looking for change.

Pinarayi Vijayan holds Dharmadom

Despite the broader setbacks for the LDF, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is performing well in his own constituency. In Dharmadom, he is leading by around 1,500 votes.

This shows that while the party may be struggling overall, Vijayan continues to enjoy strong support in his home seat.

Why this election matters

This election is important because it could end the LDF’s two-term rule in Kerala. The alliance has been in power since 2016 under Vijayan’s leadership.

Before counting began, several exit polls had predicted a comeback for the UDF. The current trends appear to support those predictions.

The results will decide whether Kerala continues with the LDF or shifts back to the UDF.

Full list of key winners

As results are declared, several candidates have already secured victories across the state. Govindan Master- Taliparamba

High voter turnout reflects strong interest

The voter turnout of nearly 80 per cent shows how closely people are following this election. Kerala is known for high political awareness, and this election has been no different.

Issues such as development, welfare schemes, employment, and governance have played a major role in shaping voter choices.

Close contests in many seats

Even though the UDF is ahead overall, several constituencies are witnessing close fights. Margins in many seats remain narrow, and results could change as counting progresses.

This means the final outcome will only become clear once all rounds of counting are completed.

The majority mark in the Kerala Assembly is 71 seats. The UDF’s current lead puts it in a strong position, but it still needs to maintain its advantage until the final results.

If the UDF crosses the majority mark, it will form the next government. If not, smaller parties and independent candidates could play an important role.

A possible political shift

Kerala has often alternated between the UDF and LDF in past elections. However, the scale of the current lead suggests that this may not just be a routine change.

It could reflect a stronger voter message, possibly linked to governance issues, anti-incumbency, or a desire for new policies.

Final results awaited

As counting continues, the focus remains on key constituencies and overall seat tally. Political leaders, party workers, and voters are all watching closely.

The final results will decide not just who forms the government, but also the direction Kerala’s politics will take in the coming years.

For now, the UDF holds the edge, but the race is not over yet.

With UDF leading comfortably as counting gathers pace in Kerala assembly election results, around 99 seats to the LDF's 35 in early trends, the focus now shifts to its first policy moves. Education reform, job creation and technology-led governance are expected to be top priorities as it prepares to return to power after a decade.

Kerala appears to be on the cusp of a significant political transition. Early counting trends from the 2026 Assembly elections indicate that the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has surged past the majority mark, positioning itself to end the decade-long rule of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. If these trends hold, the shift will not merely be electoral, it will represent a structural reset in governance philosophy, administrative design and policy priorities.

This is not just a routine alternation of power, something Kerala is historically known for. The scale of the UDF's lead suggests a deeper voter sentiment, one that combines anti-incumbency, demand for administrative efficiency and a desire for institutional reform.

The immediate question now is not just how this shift happened, but what comes next, particularly, what the UDF's first policy moves will look like as it attempts to reshape governance.

Why the LDF Lost Its Edge

The LDF entered this election attempting something rare in Kerala politics, a third consecutive term. Its campaign leaned heavily on continuity, welfare expansion and claims of strong performance in healthcare, education and social security. Leaders like MA Baby emphasised achievements such as poverty reduction and improvements in human development indicators. However, several structural and political factors appear to have worked against the ruling front:

1. Accumulated Anti-Incumbency

Ten years in power created governance fatigue. Even strong welfare delivery models tend to face diminishing political returns over time. Voters often begin to scrutinize inefficiencies, delays and bureaucratic inertia more sharply.

2. Governance vs Delivery Gap

While the LDF projected large-scale achievements, the opposition successfully framed a narrative around delivery gaps, i. e. delays in services, bureaucratic complexity and concerns over fiscal management.

3. Allegations of Corruption and Nepotism

The UDF campaign amplified accusations related to corruption and favoritism. Even without legal conclusions, perception often plays a decisive role in electoral outcomes.

4. Minority Vote Consolidation

Kerala's electoral arithmetic often hinges on consolidated voting blocs. Early trends suggest that the UDF benefited from a stronger alignment among minority voters.

5. Campaign Messaging

Leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor positioned the election as a referendum on 'change vs continuity'. That framing appears to have resonated.

The UDF's Mandate: Not Just Victory, But Reset

Unlike previous electoral cycles where power alternated without major structural shifts, this mandate carries expectations of systemic reform. The UDF has not campaigned merely on welfare expansion, it has explicitly promised a governance reset.

Shashi Tharoor described the moment as an opportunity for a 'new kind of politics'. That phrase is critical as it signals intent to move beyond incremental changes toward institutional redesign.

What Will Be the UDF's First Policy Priority?

Based on its manifesto, campaign messaging, and early signals, the UDF's first major policy intervention is likely to focus on administrative restructuring of higher education governance, a sector it has identified as both politically and structurally significant.

This is not accidental. Education sits at the intersection of youth aspirations, employment and institutional control, making it a high-impact starting point.

Core Components of the Likely First Policy

1. University Autonomy and Governance Reform

The UDF has proposed reducing political interference in universities by:

Creating independent academic syndicates

Rebalancing administrative authority away from partisan influence

Reviewing and modernizing existing university laws

This marks a clear departure from the LDF’s more centralized, state-driven approach.

2. Independent Teacher Recruitment Commission

One of the most immediate reforms expected:

Establish a transparent, independent body for faculty hiring

Standardize recruitment processes

Reduce allegations of favoritism and corruption

This move directly addresses one of the opposition’s key campaign issues.

3. Student Welfare Framework

The proposed 'Siddharthan Student Distress App' and anti-ragging legislation indicate a shift toward:

Mental health support systems

Institutional accountability on campuses

Stronger regulatory oversight

4. Campus Democracy Reforms

The UDF plans to:

Set up an independent Student Academic Election Commission

Ensure fair student union elections

Introduce structured opposition roles within campus bodies

This is a political as well as administrative reform, aimed at depoliticizing institutional control while preserving democratic participation.

Why Education Reform Comes First

The choice of higher education as the first reform sector is strategic for several reasons:

1. High Visibility, Immediate Impact

Changes in universities affect lakhs of students directly, creating quick political and social feedback loops.

2. Link to Employment

Kerala faces persistent challenges in job creation and youth migration. Aligning education with market needs is critical.

3. Institutional Signaling

Reforming universities sends a broader message: the government is serious about autonomy, transparency, and modernization.

The 'Job Watch Tower': A Structural Innovation

One of the most notable proposals is the creation of a Job Watch Tower, a permanent system to track labor market trends and align academic programs accordingly. This reflects a shift from:

Degree-based education to Skill-based education

Static curriculum to Dynamic, market-responsive curriculum

If implemented effectively, this could:

Reduce educated unemployment

Improve industry-academia alignment

Enhance Kerala’s competitiveness in the knowledge economy

Technology and AI Integration

The UDF’s proposal to introduce:

AI departments in colleges

CAIR-Kerala (Centre for AI Research)

Data-driven education dashboards suggests that digital governance will be a key administrative pillar.

This aligns with global trends where governance increasingly relies on:

Real-time data analytics

Predictive policy modeling

Outcome-based evaluation

Challenges Ahead for the UDF

While the mandate is strong, execution will not be straightforward.

1. Fiscal Constraints

Kerala’s financial position is tight. Balancing reform with fiscal discipline will be difficult.

2. Institutional Resistance

Administrative systems built over a decade do not change overnight. Resistance from within bureaucracy and institutions is likely.

3. Managing Expectations

A large victory raises public expectations. Delivering visible results quickly will be crucial.

4. Political Balancing

The UDF coalition includes multiple parties with different priorities. Maintaining cohesion while pushing reforms will require careful negotiation.

What Happens to LDF’s Legacy Policies?

The UDF is unlikely to dismantle major welfare schemes outright. Instead, the approach will likely be:

Retain core welfare programs

Improve delivery efficiency

Reduce leakages

Introduce accountability mechanisms

This reflects a pragmatic strategy rather than ideological reversal.

Early Signals from Leadership

Leaders like K. C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala have emphasized unity and transition readiness. The celebratory tone at the party headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram reflects confidence—but also awareness of responsibility.

The Bigger Picture: A Structural Reset

This election is not just about who governs Kerala—it is about how Kerala will be governed in the next decade. The LDF model focused on:

Welfare expansion

Public sector strength

Long-term social indicators

The UDF model is likely to emphasise:

Institutional reform

Administrative efficiency

Market alignment

Governance transparency

If the current trends translate into final results, Kerala is heading toward a decisive administrative transition. The UDF’s first policy moves, especially in higher education governance, will serve as a blueprint for its broader reform agenda.

The success of this transition will depend on execution. Electoral mandates create opportunity, but administrative outcomes depend on design, discipline, and delivery.

The coming months will determine whether this shift becomes a short-term political change, or a long-term structural transformation.

The BIG Question: Who will be the next Keralam CM?

As the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) looks set to take power in Kerala, the big question now is: who will become the next Chief Minister?

Several names are being discussed within the party. Leader of Opposition V. D. Satheesan is seen as a strong contender. Senior leader Ramesh Chennithala is also in the race. He was the party’s chief ministerial face in the 2021 Assembly elections, when the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF returned to power.

However, the situation has become more interesting with the possible entry of K. C. Venugopal into the race. Known to be close to Rahul Gandhi, Venugopal is considered influential within the party. Many believe he has strong backing among newly elected MLAs, especially since candidate selections were largely handled by the central leadership.

Despite all the speculation, the Congress has not made any official announcement yet. Senior leader Tariq Anwar has made it clear that the final decision will be taken by the party’s high command, which will choose the most suitable person for the role.

Venugopal himself has avoided giving a clear answer. When asked about his chances, he said he does not want to be part of such discussions right now and that the focus should remain on the election results. He added that there is a proper process to follow and that everyone should wait until the counting is complete.

(With inputs from agencies)

Ahead of Kerala's election results, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor avoided questions about being the UDF's chief ministerial candidate. He stated the decision rests with the party and elected MLAs post-election.

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has stirred political chatter ahead of the Kerala Assembly election results by avoiding a direct response on whether he could be the United Democratic Front’s (UDF) chief ministerial face. His remarks come at a crucial moment, with exit polls suggesting a possible return to power for the Congress-led alliance after a decade.

When asked about the possibility of becoming chief minister, Tharoor chose not to engage directly, reiterating that such decisions are for the party leadership and elected MLAs to make after the results are declared. His response aligns with the Congress’s consistent stand that the CM choice will be decided post-election, keeping internal equations balanced.

At the same time, Tharoor expressed cautious optimism about the UDF’s prospects. Reacting to exit polls that project an edge for the alliance, he remarked, “Exit polls in our country have lots of problems… I don’t want to particularly rely on them.” However, he acknowledged the unusual consistency across projections, noting that analysts and observers seem largely in agreement about a UDF win.

Also Read: Kerala Assembly Elections 2026: Counting begins amid tight security

He further added, “I’m expecting by mid-morning it will be a very clear and convincing narrative in our favour,” signalling confidence within the Congress camp while still maintaining a measured tone ahead of counting day.

The 2026 Kerala election has emerged as a high-stakes contest between the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the opposition UDF. Exit polls indicate a tight race but give the UDF a slight advantage, pointing to possible anti-incumbency against the Left government.

The outcome carries significant political implications. A UDF victory would mark a major comeback for the Congress in Kerala, while a loss could reinforce the Left’s hold over the state. Meanwhile, the BJP-led NDA continues to seek a larger role, though it remains a marginal player in the state’s bipolar contest.

As counting day approaches, Tharoor’s careful positioning reflects both party discipline and political prudence. While speculation over the CM face continues, the final decision will depend on the mandate delivered by Kerala’s voters.

Also Read: Kerala Elections 2026: UDF confident of scintillating victory, says MP

A road accident caught on camera in Kerala has gone viral on social media. The incident reportedly happened near 20th Mile Nandi Masjid in Koyilandy. A man on a scooty was struck by a Mahindra pickup truck while he was using his mobile phone. Fortunately, he was wearing a helmet and did not appear to suffer serious injuries.

What the video shows

The clip shows the rider stopped on the road while talking on his phone. He was not fully off the road. Instead, his scooty was partly blocking one lane.

A wide shoulder was available beside the road, but he remained on the carriageway. Moments later, a Mahindra pickup approached from behind and brushed against the scooter, knocking the rider to the ground.

Bystanders quickly ran over and helped him get back on his feet.

Social media reacts strongly

The video has triggered a huge response online. Many users criticised the rider for stopping in the middle of a busy road.

Just a few seconds on the phone can cost a lifetime.Whether you're riding or just standing roadside - stay alert.Good to see people rushed in to help, but this is a clear reminder ~ attention saves lives.

— SmartBrief (@SmartBriefex) April 25, 2026

That was necessary for him.. He parked his scooty in busy road and was using his mobile by blocking it... Now he will think twice before blocking the road.

— Akash Kumar (@techakash) April 25, 2026

He asked for it. He deserved it. He needed it very badly. He will never stand/park like that in future.

— || प्रज्ञानम् ब्रह्म || (@jamtaara) April 25, 2026

Everyone sympathizing with the scooty guy should learn that THAT is NOT ROADSIDE!! He was parked ON THE ROAD.....despite a very broad semi-paved shoulder being available! M0rons need to learn basic civic sense and traffic sense.

— Omni Curious (@curious_omni) April 25, 2026

They pointed out that there was plenty of space on the roadside where he could have parked safely before using his phone.

Several people said the incident was a hard but important lesson in road safety.

Questions raised about the pickup driver

While most users blamed the rider, some also questioned the pickup driver's actions. A few viewers felt the truck had enough room to avoid hitting the scooter.

Looks like even the pickup driver was on the phone, which is pretty common these days

— . (@kuchhnahii) April 25, 2026

Others suggested the driver may also have been distracted. However, the exact circumstances are not clear from the video alone.

The incident highlights a common mistake made by many road users. Stopping on the road, even for a short phone call, can be dangerous.

Drivers and riders should always move completely off the road before checking their phones or taking calls.

A few seconds of carelessness can lead to a serious accident.

Konni: Imagine finding a python in your house not once, not twice, but for three days straight. That's the scary situation a family in Ilakollur, Konni, in Pathanamthitta district is facing. They have been finding baby pythons around their home, and everyone is on edge.

The first day, a python was spotted on the verandah. The next day, another one turned up in the sit-out. And today, a third one was found in the house's front yard. Each time, the neighbours came together, caught the snake, and handed it over to the forest officials.

The family, which includes an elderly woman and a small baby, is understandably terrified. But the incident has also kicked up a storm. Many are criticising the locals for catching the pythons themselves instead of waiting for trained snake catchers. Forest officials have also stepped in, expressing their frustration. "How many times do we have to tell people not to handle snakes directly? We say this for your own safety," one official said. However, the local residents have a different story. They say they informed the authorities, but the rescue team took hours to arrive. "With children in the house, we couldn't just wait around," they explained.

Don't delay identifying snake bites; giving antivenom on time is crucial

This incident comes at a time when the state's Health Department has issued a high alert to all hospitals following a rise in deaths from snake bites. In a meeting with District Medical Officers (DMOs), the Director of Health Services has instructed them to check all emergency cases for a possible snake bite, just to be safe.
