The authorities have also directed sellers and platforms to remove related listings, advertisements and promotional material meant for food or human consumption.

Datura is a poisonous flowering plant commonly known in English as thorn apple or devil's trumpet. It belongs to the nightshade family and is found in many parts of India, often growing in open land and wastelands.

The plant has large, trumpet-shaped flowers and a distinctive round or oval fruit covered with sharp spines. Its fruits contain numerous seeds. In different parts of India, Datura is known by different local names. It is called Ummetha Puvvu in Telugu and Umathai in Tamil. The fruit is also referred to locally as Ummetha Pandu.

While Datura has a long history of use in some traditional and religious practices, that does not make the plant safe to eat. Medical literature is clear that all parts of the plant can be toxic.

Datura contains naturally occurring toxic compounds, including atropine, scopolamine and hyoscyamine. These substances interfere with the normal functioning of the nervous system and can produce what doctors describe as anticholinergic toxicity.

The effects can vary depending on the amount consumed and the part of the plant involved. Symptoms may include a dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, flushed and hot skin, blurred vision, dilated pupils, a rapid heartbeat, agitation, confusion and disorientation. In severe cases, people may experience hallucinations, seizures, breathing problems, coma or other life-threatening complications.

Symptoms can begin within hours of ingestion, making accidental consumption a medical emergency requiring urgent professional assessment.

The Karnataka Food Safety and Drugs Administration Department said the issue came to its notice after Datura fruits and seeds were found displayed for sale under food licences or registrations on certain online platforms.

The department said the plant possesses toxic properties and that consuming its fruits and seeds could cause serious adverse effects on human health. It therefore directed food businesses to stop selling or distributing Datura for food or human consumption and to immediately remove relevant online listings and promotional material.

The licences of the three major platforms will remain suspended until further orders, with the authorities seeking compliance reports before considering further action.

The warning also comes against the backdrop of reports of accidental Datura poisoning. Earlier this year, a family in Andhra Pradesh reportedly fell seriously ill after consuming a dish prepared with Datura flowers, allegedly after following a viral social media video.

Medical case reports have also documented families accidentally consuming Datura after mistaking it for edible plants, reported Deccan Chronicle. Such incidents underline the danger of identifying unfamiliar plants through appearance alone or following unverified recipes online.

The key message behind Karnataka's action is straightforward: Datura and Ummetha Pandu should not be treated as ordinary food ingredients. Anyone who develops unusual symptoms after eating a suspected toxic plant should seek urgent medical care rather than attempting home treatment.

Most of the physical work on the line is already complete. Civil works, track laying and much of the finishing work have been done. Six trains have also been delivered for the new section.

The Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) has already conducted key tests on the new trains. Oscillation trials were held to determine safe operating speeds, while Emergency Braking Distance tests checked the trains' braking performance.

These tests were conducted between April 28 and May 9. The Interim Speed Certificate (ISC) is now expected to be issued within the next few days.

The bigger hurdle is the Independent Safety Assessment (ISA) certificate for the signalling system.

The assessment will also cover important safety systems, including Automatic Train Protection (ATP) and Automatic Train Operation (ATO).

While ATP testing has reportedly been completed, ATO validation is still in progress. These tests check whether trains can operate automatically, stop accurately and berth correctly at stations.

Sources said signalling software is being upgraded before it is installed on the trains. Further testing is expected between August 3 and 5, followed by the ISA assessment on August 5 and 6.

After the ISA certificate is obtained, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) will apply to the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) for the statutory safety inspection.

The inspection is expected to take place in the third week of August. If the CMRS raises any concerns, BMRCL will first have to address them before the line can open to passengers.

A high-level delegation of the Karnataka State Bioenergy Development Board (KSBDB), led by Chairman S.E. Sudheendra, held a meeting with the Consul General of the United States at the Consulate General of the USA in Atlanta to explore opportunities for collaboration in bioenergy, clean fuels and sustainable energy solutions between Karnataka and the State of Georgia.

On the occasion, the Chairman presented Karnataka’s multi-feedstock, decentralised bioenergy model, which focuses on community participation, sustainable biomass utilisation and the development of efficient biomass-to-fuel supply chains. He highlighted the potential to adapt and share these approaches through international technical cooperation.

The discussions identified significant areas of mutual interest with ongoing clean-energy initiatives in the Atlanta region, including the U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Cities-Georgia coalition, the I-75 Clean Corridor Programme and initiatives focused on converting forestry residues into usable fuels. The Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE) was also identified as a potential technical and research partner for future collaboration.

The Consul General welcomed the proposal to strengthen Karnataka-Georgia cooperation in clean energy and bioenergy. Car and jeep journeys now cost Rs 185

During the annual revision on April 1, the toll for cars was increased from Rs 175 to Rs 180. Now, just three months later, the rate has been revised again.

The one-way toll for cars, jeeps, vans and other light motor vehicles has increased from Rs 180 to Rs 185. A return journey within the stipulated time will now cost Rs 275.

Monthly pass also becomes costlier

The regular monthly pass, which allows 50 single journeys, has also become more expensive. The pass, which earlier cost Rs 5,940, will now cost Rs 6,100.

However, the NHAI has clarified that there is no change in the local monthly pass for eligible residents living within a 20-kilometre radius of the toll plazas. The pass will continue to cost Rs 360.

New toll rates for different vehicles

The revised one-way toll rates for different categories of vehicles are:

Light commercial vehicles, mini buses and light goods vehicles: Rs 295
Trucks and buses (double axle): Rs 620
Three-axle commercial vehicles: Rs 675
Heavy construction machinery and multi-axle vehicles (4 to 6 axles): Rs 970
Oversized vehicles (7 or more axles): Rs 1,180

Second hike in just 90 days

Toll rates are normally revised once a year. However, this second increase in just 90 days, following the April hike, has left many commuters and vehicle operators unhappy.

There are also concerns that repeated toll increases could raise transportation costs for commercial vehicles. This, in turn, could increase the cost of transporting essential goods and eventually affect prices for consumers.

This has led to a clash between the current annual hike rule and the new proposal, leaving the public confused.

Two Different Models, Big Difference in Impact

The metro corporation is looking at two separate models to balance its future income and operational costs. Here’s how they differ.

Model 1: The Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) Way

According to this committee's recommendation, fares should be increased automatically by 5% every year (or by the increase in operational cost, whichever is lower). This is done to improve the metro's financial health and to avoid shocking commuters with a sudden, large price jump.

Model 2: The New Phase 3A DPR Proposal

This new report suggests a different approach. Instead of a small annual increase, it assumes a 12% fare hike all at once, every three years.

What This Means for Your Ticket Price

If the new DPR proposal is adopted, by 2033, when Phase 3A is expected to be completed, the minimum metro fare could go up from the current ₹10 to ₹14. The maximum fare could shoot up from ₹90 to ₹126.

The Story Behind the Phase 3A DPR

BMRCL had appointed a firm called 'RINA' to prepare the DPR for the 37.8-kilometre Sarjapur-Hebbal line (Phase 3A). The report was prepared in June 2024 and revised in February 2026. It was then submitted to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in April. This report is where the 12% hike every three years calculation was mentioned, which is different from the current rules.

'Fare Committee's Word is Final': BMRCL Clarifies

Even though the revised DPR contains these different calculations, top sources at BMRCL have given an important clarification.

"The estimates in the revised DPR are just a document based on financial assumptions. Ultimately, the recommendations of the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) will be the deciding factor," officials stated. The FFC was formed under the 'Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002', and its decisions are legally binding.

A fare revision that was supposed to happen in February of this year was cancelled following strong public opposition. BMRCL had proposed to increase the minimum fare to ₹11 and the maximum to ₹95. This proposal is now pending with the BMRCL board, headed by the Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. So far, no new fare hike has been officially approved.

Strong Opposition and Expert Criticism

Bengaluru Metro is already known as one of the most expensive metro services in the country. In February 2025, ticket prices were increased by a massive 51.55% on average. After intense public anger, BMRCL immediately gave a 5% discount, but the burden on commuters remained high. Urban transport experts have strongly criticised BMRCL's pricing policy.

"Suddenly increasing the fare by such a huge amount last February was the wrong decision. BMRCL must provide a transparent clarification to the public about the difference between the old and new fare calculations. We are not saying fares should not be increased at all, but it must be done in a scientific and proper manner, without being a burden on the common person," an expert commented.

For the thousands of daily commuters in Bengaluru, affordability is the biggest challenge. As the Phase 3A project moves forward, it is hoped that the authorities will soon put an end to this fare confusion.

Police sources told India Today TV that Kenneth allegedly asked questions framed around situations such as what a person should do if something happened or how to respond to an attack.

Police allege that instead of trying to resolve the dispute, he began planning the killings. Investigators believe he also explored ways to dispose of the bodies after the alleged murders.

According to police sources, Kenneth had purchased an iron furnace for his proposed cloud kitchen venture. Police allege that he considered using the furnace to dispose of the bodies but later concluded that the plan was not practical.

Three members of family allegedly killed

All three family members died in the incident. The case was reportedly strengthened by Somasundar's dying declaration.

According to The Times of India, despite suffering several stab wounds, Somasundar managed to reach the staircase. His condition was noticed by neighbours, who alerted the police.

COVID-19 forced a complete career change

Before becoming a delivery associate, Reshma stitched shirts for garment factories from her home. She earned around ₹1,000 a day and managed to support her family through tailoring.

However, when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down garment factories, she lost her only source of income. Left with no steady earnings, she joined Amazon as a delivery associate to make ends meet.

One tragedy after another

The family's struggles began in 2014 when her son was diagnosed with kidney failure. They borrowed around Rs 7 lakh for his treatment, but despite spending seven months in hospital, he could not be saved.

Just a year later, Reshma was diagnosed with oral cancer. In 2016, she underwent a major reconstructive surgery in which doctors used skin and bone from her thigh to rebuild part of her face.

Daily earnings, but debts continue

Today, Reshma earns around Rs 700 a day through deliveries. Her daughter works at a car showroom and earns about Rs 15,000 a month. Even with both incomes, the family continues to struggle financially.

To manage household expenses and her daughter's wedding, the family borrowed another Rs 7-8 lakh through microfinance loans. They even purchased gold earrings and a chain on loan for the wedding but may now have to return the jewellery because they cannot afford the interest.

Carrying the family's responsibility

According to Reshma, her husband has not contributed much to the family's finances since their son's death. She says he developed an alcohol addiction after the tragedy, leaving her and her daughter to shoulder all the household responsibilities.

"I work all day just to earn enough for one square meal," she says.

Reshma says not every day is easy. Some customers ignore her calls or insist she climb several floors despite her visible health condition.

Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda on Thursday launched the next phase of the city’s vacant-plot cleaning drive in Domlur, Shantinagar Assembly constituency, after the deadline given to private landowners expired. Under the Greater Bengaluru Authority’s 'Freedom from Waste' campaign, owners were initially asked to clean their vacant plots by August 15. The deadline was later extended to August 22 following requests for more time. With the extension now over, the five city corporations have been directed to identify neglected sites, issue notices to owners and begin cleaning work where required.

Owners may have to bear cleaning costs

The GBA has made it clear that maintaining a private vacant plot is primarily the owner's responsibility. If civic authorities have to step in and clean a site after the owner fails to act, the cost can be recovered through the property's tax bill.

Officials have been asked to prepare lists of plots that need cleaning. Notices will be served through marshals and junior health inspectors before civic action is taken. The five city corporations were directed to begin the drive from Thursday and intensify it further in the coming days.

The minister has urged owners to clean their properties themselves rather than wait for civic intervention, saying this would help them avoid additional costs.

The GBA has said charges for cleaning are based on the government's Schedule of Rates and depend on factors such as the size of the plot, the quantity of debris and the work involved.

Drive aims to tackle waste and sanitation concerns

Neglected vacant plots often become dumping grounds for construction debris, household waste and overgrown vegetation. They can also create sanitation concerns by attracting mosquitoes, rats, snakes and other pests.

Under the wider ‘Freedom from Waste’ campaign, the GBA and other agencies have been working to clear construction and demolition waste, debris and overgrown vegetation from public spaces across Bengaluru.

Before the campaign began, the authorities had identified around 22,700 tonnes of waste at 1,616 locations across the city. The clean-up involves coordination between the GBA, Bengaluru Development Authority, BESCOM, BMRCL, K-RIDE, KIADB and other agencies.

Geo-tagged proof and proper disposal

To improve accountability, the civic bodies have been directed to record before-and-after geo-tagged videos of every vacant plot cleaned by the authorities.

Waste and debris collected from these properties must be taken only to authorised disposal sites. The Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited has also been asked to track the process, from identifying the plot to cleaning and final disposal, through its ‘Clear It’ system. Citizens are also expected to get a facility to report neglected vacant plots.

The latest action marks a shift from voluntary compliance to enforcement. Bengaluru's message to owners is straightforward: clean your vacant plot, or the civic body may do it and recover the cost from you.

The court also dismissed a petition filed by Deputy SP Kanaka Lakshmi B.M. seeking to quash the FIR registered against her in connection with the abetment of suicide allegations. A detailed order in the matter is awaited.

The case has also led to calls for an independent investigation. A request was made for the probe to be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), with the petitioners arguing that the allegations require an investigation outside the state police system.

The deceased lawyer was reportedly an accused in a case linked to an alleged Rs 196 crore scam involving the Karnataka Bhovi Development Corporation.

She faced charges under Sections 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code, relating to criminal breach of trust and cheating. On November 13, she had filed an affidavit alleging that she was subjected to torture by the woman investigating officer handling the case.
