Vattassery Damodaran Satheesan, known as V. D. Satheesan, was born on 31 May 1964. He is an Indian politician and a lawyer. He is currently the Chief Minister-elect of Kerala. He has been the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Paravur Assembly constituency since 2001. Over the years, he has built a strong political career through elections, leadership roles, and active work inside his party.

Satheesan is widely known for his strong speeches and clear debates in the Kerala Assembly. He has often spoken firmly against the ruling parties. Many people see him as a confident and aggressive Opposition leader.

Satheesan’s public life began during his student days. In 1986–1987, he served as the chairman of the Mahatma Gandhi University Union. This role gave him early experience in leadership and public work.

He also worked as the secretary of the National Students’ Union. These positions helped him understand student issues and organise public activities. His time in student politics became the base of his later political career.

VD Satheesan entered mainstream politics in 1996. In that year, he contested the Kerala Legislative Assembly election from Paravur. However, he lost to P. Raju of the Communist Party of India. At that time, Paravur was considered a strong area for the Communist Party.

Even after the defeat, Satheesan continued his political work. He did not stop campaigning or connecting with people. His persistence helped him gain support in the constituency.

In 2001, Satheesan won his first election to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from Paravur. At that time, he was working as an advocate in the Kerala High Court. His victory marked an important turning point in his political journey.

After that, he continued to win elections from the same constituency:

2006: He defeated K. M. Dinakaran.
2011: He defeated Pannyan Raveendran of the Communist Party of India by 11,349 votes.
2016: He defeated Sarada Mohan of the Communist Party of India by 20,634 votes.

He also served as the Chief Whip of the Indian National Congress in the 12th Assembly.

These repeated victories showed strong public support in Paravur.

In the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election, Satheesan was elected for the fifth time from Paravur. He defeated M. T. Nixon of the Communist Party of India by about 22,000 votes.

On 22 May 2021, the Congress Working Committee named him the Leader of the Opposition in the 15th Kerala Legislative Assembly. In this role, he led the opposition party inside the House.

During this period, he became well known for his debates, especially his strong arguments against Finance Minister T. M. Thomas Isaac. His speeches were widely discussed in political circles.

The 2026 Kerala Legislative Assembly election became a major moment in his career. Satheesan led the United Democratic Front (UDF) to a big victory. The alliance won 102 seats out of 140, giving it an absolute majority.

This result ended the ten-year rule of the Left Democratic Front (LDF). The victory was described as a landslide win. It created strong political change in the state.

In addition to leading the alliance, Satheesan contested from Paravur for the sixth time. He won again with a margin of 20,600 votes. He received 78,658 votes, while the LDF candidate E. T. Taison received 58,058 votes.

This personal victory showed that he still had strong support in his constituency.

Selection as Chief Minister-elect

After the UDF’s big win, there was high suspense about the next Chief Minister. Within the Congress party, there were different views. Some leaders supported Satheesan, while others backed senior leaders such as K. C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala.

The expected rain becomes important as the southwest monsoon has still not reached Kerala, even though the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted its arrival around May 26.

Weather experts said weak cloud activity over the south-central Arabian Sea has slowed the monsoon’s progress. A cyclonic circulation in the region has reduced moisture and weakened rain-bearing clouds near Kerala. However, conditions are likely to improve within the next two to three days.

For the monsoon to officially enter Kerala, at least 14 selected weather stations in the state must receive 2.5 mm rainfall for two continuous days. So far, those conditions have not been fully met.

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has also released a fresh rainfall outlook for the next 15 days. According to its forecast maps, heavy rain activity is likely over south India, eastern states, the northeast and regions near the Bay of Bengal during the coming week.

The forecast is based on satellite observations along with oceanic and atmospheric data.

While rain may soon bring relief to many regions, severe heat continues to affect northwestern, central and eastern parts of India.

Uttar Pradesh’s Banda remained the hottest city in the country on Tuesday with a maximum temperature of 47.4°C. It was the ninth straight day that the temperature crossed 47°C in the district.

Several other cities in Uttar Pradesh also recorded extreme temperatures. Orai touched 45.8°C, Jhansi 45.5°C, Prayagraj 45.4°C, Agra 45.3°C and Hamirpur 45.2°C.

In Rajasthan, Sri Ganganagar recorded 47°C, making it the second hottest city in India. Bikaner and Phalodi both recorded 46°C, while Jaisalmer touched 45.6°C. Jaipur also remained hot at 43.2°C.

Many districts in Maharashtra continued to face extreme heat. Brahmapuri recorded 46.6°C, which was 3.5 degrees above normal. Chandrapur saw 46.4°C, Wardha 46°C, Nagpur’s Sonegaon area 45.5°C and Gondia 45.2°C.

In Haryana, Sirsa recorded 46°C and Rohtak 45.6°C. Punjab’s Bathinda reached 45.8°C.

Delhi also remained hotter than usual, with the maximum temperature touching 43.5°C, around 3 degrees above normal.

The IMD has issued heatwave alerts for parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Odisha, Punjab, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh on May 28.

At the same time, thunderstorms, strong winds and even hailstorms are expected in parts of Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi.

Several states, including Bihar, West Bengal, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, may witness strong winds blowing at speeds of 50 to 70 kmph along with light rain in some areas.

Weather officials said temperatures may fall by 3°C to 7°C in many northern states from May 29 onwards.

NEET-UG 2026, held on May 3 for 22.79 lakh students across India and abroad, has been cancelled after allegations of paper leak. Investigations linked suspected question circulation to Rajasthan and Kerala. The Government has ordered a CBI probe.

The NEET-UG 2026 examination has been cancelled following serious allegations of a paper leak and examination irregularities. The decision has created concern across the country, as this is India’s main entrance exam for medical courses.

The exam was conducted on May 3 in pen-and-paper mode. Around 22.79 lakh students appeared for the test. It was held across 551 cities in India and 14 cities abroad. In total, more than 5,400 examination centres were used.

Soon after the exam, reports from several states suggested that question papers may have been leaked before the test began.

Protests outside Shastri Bhavan

After the cancellation announcement, protestors were seen climbing barricades at Shastri Bhavan as they expressed anger over the situation. Many students and supporters demanded strict action and a fair investigation.

The cancellation has placed lakhs of medical aspirants in a difficult position. For many, this exam decides their future in medicine and related fields.

The issue began shortly after the examination was held. Initial complaints came from Rajasthan and Bihar. Investigators started looking into claims that exam-related material had circulated through messaging apps and private groups.

Students and coaching institutes also reported unusually accurate “prediction sheets”. These sheets appeared to match a large number of questions from the actual paper. This raised further doubts about fairness.

As more information came out, allegations grew that some candidates may have received access to questions hours before the exam.

Investigators are also checking claims that answer keys and paper sets were shared through organised networks across different states.

The Rajasthan Police Special Operations Group (SOG) began a detailed investigation into the matter.

The investigation reportedly found links between the suspicious paper and both Kerala and the Sikar district of Rajasthan.

According to the reports, an MBBS student in Kerala, originally from Churu in Rajasthan, sent a 'question bank' on WhatsApp on May 1. The message was sent to his friend in Sikar, who runs a paying guest (PG) accommodation.

Sources said the question bank had around 300 questions. When officials compared these with the original NEET paper, they were reportedly surprised. About 150 of the 180 questions matched exactly.

This finding increased concerns about a possible organised leak.

Spread of the material

After receiving the question bank, the Sikar-based PG operator allegedly shared it through WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms, according to News18 report.

The material was reportedly passed to students staying at his PG. From there, it spread further through career counsellors and other students.

Interestingly, after the exam, the same PG operator filed a complaint at the Udyog Nagar police station and also informed the National Testing Agency (NTA). Investigators are now checking whether he made the complaint out of fear of being exposed.

According to news agency ANI, Rajasthan SOG Additional Director General Vishal Bansal said investigators were reviewing a guess paper containing about 410 questions.

Out of these, around 120 questions reportedly appeared in the Chemistry section of NEET-UG 2026. He also stated that the paper had been circulating among students for 15 days to one month before the examination.

These findings added more pressure on authorities to take action.

NTA cancels the exam

The National Testing Agency said it decided to cancel the exam after reviewing inputs shared by central agencies and law enforcement bodies.

In its official statement, NTA said the findings raised concerns about the integrity of the examination process. The agency said the exam “could not be allowed to stand” in order to maintain transparency and trust.

The decision was taken with the approval of the Government of India.

CBI investigation ordered

The Government has referred the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a full and detailed inquiry.

The CBI will examine all allegations, including how the question material circulated and whether organised groups were involved.

NTA has said it will fully cooperate with the CBI and provide all records, data, and support needed for the investigation.

Impact on students

The cancellation has created uncertainty for lakhs of students preparing for medical courses such as MBBS and BDS.

For many aspirants, NEET is one of the most important exams in their lives. The sudden cancellation has caused stress, frustration, and confusion.

Some students have expressed relief that alleged malpractice will not go unchecked. Others feel disappointed because they must prepare again.

What NTA has clarified about re-exam

NTA has confirmed that the examination will be re-conducted on dates that will be announced separately.

The agency has also clarified important points:

Registration data will remain valid.
Candidature details will be carried forward.
Examination centres chosen earlier will stay the same.
No fresh registration will be required.
No extra examination fee will be charged.
Fees already paid will be refunded.
The exam will be conducted using NTA’s internal resources.

Fresh admit cards will be issued before the new exam date.

Candidates and parents are advised to wait for official updates and follow only NTA’s communication channels.

The issue has also drawn political attention. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi criticised the situation. He described the exam as an 'auction' and claimed that many questions were being sold on WhatsApp hours before the test.

In a post on social media platform X, he said that lakhs of students worked hard for months, but their future was affected in one night due to alleged leaks.

He also mentioned that over the past 10 years, there have been multiple paper leak cases and re-exams.

NTA cites integrity concerns

In its statement, NTA said the decision to cancel the exam was taken after examining inputs in coordination with central agencies.

The agency said law enforcement findings raised serious concerns about the integrity of the examination process. It added that the cancellation was necessary to ensure transparency in the system.

NTA stressed that the step was taken in the interest of students and to protect trust in the national examination system.

The focus now shifts to two main areas: the CBI investigation and the announcement of new exam dates.

Security officials described his death as a major setback to Al-Badr’s recruitment, propaganda and radicalisation network operating around Jammu and Kashmir.

According to security sources, Hamza Burhan was a senior operative linked to Al-Badr and had allegedly worked as an Over Ground Worker (OGW) during the period surrounding the 2019 Pulwama terror attack.

On February 14, 2019, a suicide bombing in Pulwama killed 40 CRPF personnel, making it one of the deadliest terror attacks in recent Indian history.

Investigative agencies, including the National Investigation Agency, had reportedly linked Hamza Burhan to terror-related activities during that period.

According to officials, several young recruits allegedly influenced through such networks were later booked under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act or UAPA.

Sources said Hamza Burhan was shot dead in Muzaffarabad.

Reports claim he was attacked by unidentified gunmen while stepping out near his office.

According to accounts shared by security sources, bike-borne attackers opened fire on him before fleeing the area.

The attackers have not been officially identified so far.

After the incident, security presence in the area was reportedly increased, though there has been no official statement from Pakistan regarding the killing.

Some reports also described Hamza Burhan as being associated with the Abbas Institute of Medical Sciences in Muzaffarabad, where he reportedly held an administrative position.

Indian authorities had earlier declared Arjumand Gulzar Dar, also known as Hamza Burhan, a designated terrorist under the UAPA in 2022.

Sources said he had been living in Pakistan since around 2015.

Possible gang war angle

According to security sources, the killing may be linked to internal disputes within terror networks operating in PoK.

Officials claimed there had been long-running tensions within Al-Badr over funding distribution and operational control.

Kerala Tragedy: Three Dental College Students Drown In Palavanpady River Near Kothamangalam

A day out with friends turned tragic in Kothamangalam in Ernakulam district, after three students drowned in a river at Vadattupara. The incident took place on Sunday in the Palavanpady river and has left their college and families in deep shock. The deceased have been identified as Biyon from Thiruvalla in Pathanamthitta district, Harish from Thiruvananthapuram, and Atul from Kottayam. All three were students at Mar Baselios Dental College.

Group Visit To Vadattupara River

According to police, nine students from the college went to the Palavanpady river in Vadattupara around noon, as it was a holiday. The group decided to enter the river for bathing.

The accident happened around 1:30 PM. Reports say all nine students entered the water together. At that time, the river current was strong.

Students Swept Away By Strong Current

Police said that one student was suddenly swept away by the current. Seeing this, two of his friends jumped into the river to try and save him.

However, the strong flow of water caused all three to get into trouble. The current made it difficult for them to stay afloat. They were unable to return to safety.

The remaining students quickly raised an alarm and informed local residents. Soon, people from the area rushed to help.

Rescue Efforts By Fire Force And Police

Local residents started searching for the missing students. The Fire and Rescue Services team also reached the spot and joined the operation.

Police and fire personnel carried out a search in the river. The three students were recovered at around 2:15 PM, officials said. After being pulled out of the water, they were taken to a hospital in Kothamangalam.

Doctors tried to save them, but all three were declared dead.

Police Case And Further Steps

Kuttampuzha police have registered a case of unnatural death and have started an investigation. Officials said the bodies will be handed over to the relatives after the post-mortem examination, which is scheduled for Monday.

Police confirmed that the deceased were students of Mar Baselios Dental College.

Aviation regulator DGCA has issued a strict Ebola preparedness SOP for airlines operating flights linked to Congo and Uganda. Airlines must collect self-declaration forms, make health announcements and report suspected Ebola symptoms immediately

India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, has issued a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to strengthen the country’s preparedness against Ebola disease. The new guidelines focus on passenger screening, in-flight monitoring and emergency response measures for international travellers arriving from Ebola-affected countries.

The advisory was issued on May 22 and applies to airlines carrying passengers from countries such as Congo and Uganda, where Ebola concerns have been reported.

The move comes as Indian authorities step up surveillance at airports to prevent any possible spread of the deadly virus through international travel. So far, no Ebola case has been reported in India.

Under the new SOP, airlines have been directed to ensure mandatory filing and collection of Self-Declaration Forms (SDF) from all passengers arriving from or transiting through Ebola-affected nations before they leave the aircraft.

The forms will be collected at immigration or designated health counters after passengers arrive in India. The rule applies to all travellers, including passengers and crew members, regardless of nationality.

The DGCA said the measure is important to improve early detection and contact tracing if a suspected case is identified later.

Airlines have also been ordered to make special in-flight announcements during journeys connected to Ebola-affected regions.

Passengers must be informed that anyone suffering from symptoms such as fever, weakness, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea, rash or bleeding should immediately report the matter to cabin crew members and later to immigration or medical teams after landing.

The announcements must also inform travellers that all passengers and crew will need to submit self-declaration forms on arrival in India.

According to the SOP, airlines should further advise passengers to seek medical help immediately if Ebola-like symptoms appear within 21 days after reaching India. Travellers have also been asked to contact airport health authorities and visit designated hospitals in such situations.

Several Indian and international airlines have been included in the DGCA advisory.

Among the 13 carriers carrying passengers from Congo mentioned by the regulator are Air India, IndiGo, Akasa Air, Emirates, Air France, Etihad Airways and Egyptair.

The list of 17 airlines carrying passengers from Uganda also includes Air India, IndiGo and KLM.

The regulator has asked all these airlines to remain alert and fully prepared for any possible suspected case onboard.

The DGCA has also laid down strict in-flight and arrival procedures for suspected Ebola patients travelling on aircraft.

If a passenger shows symptoms during a flight, the person should be moved to the rear section of the aircraft whenever possible. The SOP also says that at least three rows in front of the suspected passenger, along with side rows, should be kept empty to reduce the risk of infection.

After landing, the aircraft must be parked in a separate designated bay so health authorities can safely manage the situation without exposing other travellers.

Airlines have also been told to maintain adequate supplies of triple-layer masks, disposable gloves, PPE kits, hand sanitisers and bio-hazard disposal bags. These items are meant for symptomatic passengers and anyone who may have come into close contact with them.

On Monday, Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda reviewed India’s preparedness and surveillance systems related to Ebola prevention.

The minister stated that no Ebola case has been detected in the country so far. However, health authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely and improve airport surveillance systems as a precautionary step.

Officials said the latest measures are aimed at improving early detection, preventing transmission and ensuring quick medical response if any suspected Ebola case is reported in India.

Here's what happened. Around 3 AM on May 1st, near Dasarahalli's Akashvani Layout, four youths were having a drinking session in their car. The group included B.Tech students Harsh, Chand, and Mrinal, along with Aryan, a private company employee. At the same time, Amruthahalli police constables Rudrappa and Hanumantha were on their patrol rounds on that route.

The policemen objected to them drinking in the middle of the road. This angered one of the youths, who started abusing the cops, shouting, 'Karnataka Police Ma*** Chor'. When one of the constables tried to get his lathi from the bike, all four of them grabbed him from behind.

The accused then tore the constable's uniform, punched and kicked the policemen, and fled the scene. Following the incident, an FIR was registered at the Amruthahalli police station based on a complaint filed by the injured constable, Rudrappa. The police eventually tracked down and arrested two of them using the car's registration number. An investigation is underway to find the absconding duo, Chand and Mrinal, police officials confirmed.

Kochi: A man has been arrested for cheating his female friend out of gold and cash. The Kalady police arrested Shalu, 35, a resident of Paipra in Marangattu, who is originally from Kothamangalam.

Shalu cooked up several stories to get money from the woman. He falsely claimed that his house was being foreclosed, his father was unwell and needed an operation, and that he wanted to start a plywood business. Believing him, the woman gave him 60 pavans of gold jewellery and around ₹12 lakh in cash, in multiple installments. Shalu had promised to return everything.

Pawned the gold and sold it later

However, he pawned the gold at establishments in Kothamangalam and Perumbavoor, and later sold it. He told the police that he had invested all the money in online betting apps.

CNG prices in Delhi-NCR have been increased by Rs 2 per kilogram, taking the new rate to Rs 83.09 per kg from Tuesday morning. The hike comes after recent petrol and diesel price increases and is being linked to rising fuel costs amid global crisis.

People in Delhi and the NCR region are set to face another rise in fuel expenses as CNG prices have been increased by Rs 2 per kilogram from 6 am onwards. With the latest revision, CNG in Delhi will now cost Rs 83.09 per kg.

With the latest revision, CNG prices in Delhi have gone up from Rs 81.09 per kg to Rs 83.09 per kg. This is the third increase in CNG prices in recent days, taking the total hike to Rs 6 per kilogram since May 15.

New CNG rates have also been announced for nearby cities. In Noida, Ghaziabad and Greater Noida, CNG will now cost Rs 91.70 per kg, while in Gurugram the price has increased to Rs 88.12 per kilogram.

The hike comes shortly after increases in petrol and diesel prices, adding more pressure on household and travel budgets.

Oil companies have also raised petrol and diesel prices for the fourth time this month. On May 25, petrol prices were increased by Rs 2.61 per litre and diesel prices by Rs 2.71 per litre.

After the latest hike, petrol in Delhi is now priced at Rs 102.12 per litre, while diesel costs Rs 95.20 per litre.

According to the latest data, petrol prices have increased by Rs 7.40 per litre in the last 11 days, while diesel prices have gone up by Rs 7.52 per litre during the same period. The price revisions happened on May 15, May 19, May 23 and May 25.

Auto drivers, cab operators and daily commuters are expected to feel the biggest impact of the latest fuel price increase.

CNG prices in Delhi-NCR have now been increased for the third time in recent days. With the latest Rs 2 per kilogram hike, the total increase in CNG prices has reached Rs 6 per kg in just 12 days. After petrol and diesel became more expensive, CNG is also putting extra pressure on the budgets of common people and daily commuters across the region.

Why Fuel Prices Are Increasing

The main reason behind the rise in petrol, diesel and CNG prices is the sharp increase in crude oil prices in the international market. Before tensions and conflict between Iran and the United States increased, crude oil was trading near 70 dollars per barrel. It has now crossed 100 dollars per barrel.

Rising crude oil prices have put pressure on oil companies. Fuel retailers say the latest price hikes are aimed at reducing their losses caused by the increasing cost of importing crude oil and fuel products.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma said on May 25 that government oil companies are currently facing losses of nearly Rs 600 crore every day.

Before the price revisions started on May 15, oil companies were reportedly losing nearly Rs 1,000 crore daily on the sale of petrol, diesel and domestic cooking gas.

The latest increase is expected to hit commercial vehicle drivers the hardest, as CNG is widely used in autos, taxis, school vans and private cars across Delhi-NCR. Auto-rickshaw drivers say repeated price hikes are reducing their daily earnings and making it difficult to manage expenses.

Auto and taxi unions have also warned that rising fuel costs could lead to higher passenger fares and transport charges in the coming days.

Experts believe the latest fuel price hikes could affect the prices of many daily-use items in the coming weeks.

Transport costs may increase as truck and tempo operators are likely to charge more for carrying goods. This could make vegetables, fruits and ration items arriving from other states more expensive.

Farmers may also face higher expenses because tractors and pumping sets require fuel, which may increase farming costs and eventually raise grain prices.

At the same time, bus fares, school transport charges, auto-rickshaw fares and taxi fares may also rise in Delhi-NCR and nearby cities.

Demand For CNG Vehicles Still Rising

Despite repeated price hikes, demand for CNG vehicles continues to grow in several cities. In Bhopal, sales of CNG vehicles have reportedly increased by nearly 50% over the last three years.

Showrooms in the city are selling around 10 to 15 CNG-based vehicles every day. Dealers say buyers still prefer CNG vehicles because they offer better mileage compared to petrol and diesel vehicles, and running costs remain lower despite recent price increases.

Protest Erupts as ED Team Tries to Leave

According to officials, ED officers had conducted searches at around 10 locations across Kerala under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). One of the locations included a rented residence linked to Pinarayi Vijayan in the state capital.

As the ED team came out after completing the searches, CPI(M) supporters gathered outside the gate and raised slogans against the central agency. Videos from the spot showed heated arguments, pushing and chaos near the residence.

The petitioners had argued that no offence under money laundering laws was made out and that the ED did not have the authority to continue the probe.

New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be visiting to Vietnam and South Korea from May 18 in a push to deepen New Delhi’s strategic footprint across the Indo-Pacific.

The visit comes at a moment of quickening momentum on two fronts – a near-finalised supersonic cruise-missile deal with Hanoi, and the launch of a new bilateral defence innovation platform with Seoul.

Vietnam: BrahMos deal at advanced stage

The centrepiece of his Hanoi leg is the prospective sale of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system, jointly developed by India and Russia, which has been in active negotiation for several years. Talks have gathered speed following the Vietnamese president, To Lam’s, visit to New Delhi just days before the minister’s departure. Sources said that the negotiations are “at advanced negotiation stages,” with the prospective contract valued at approximately ₹5,800 crore.

If the deal concluded, Vietnam would become the third country to procure BrahMos, after the Philippines and Indonesia.

The Philippines signed a $375 million agreement in 2022, while Indonesia moved to finalize a deal worth at least $340 million earlier this year.

The BrahMos system, capable of travelling at nearly three times the speed of sound and striking targets up to 300 kilometres away in its standard export configuration, is one of India’s most sought-after defence exports.

For Vietnam – which has long-running territorial disputes with China in the South China Sea – the acquisition would represent a significant upgrade to its coastal-defence capabilities. Beyond missiles, India has offered technical cooperation covering the maintenance, repair, and modernization of Vietnamese military platforms, including Sukhoi Su-30 fighter aircraft and Kilo-class submarines – hardware originally acquired from Russia that India is well-positioned to service.

The offer fits within New Delhi’s broader strategy of converting defence sales into longer-term strategic partnerships.

South Korea: innovation accelerator and expanded co-production

In Seoul, the agenda shifts toward defence industrial collaboration and emerging technologies. The two governments used their summit on April 20, 2026, attended by the prime minister, Narendra Modi, and the South Korean president, Lee Jae Myung, to announce the Korea-India Defence Accelerator, known as KIND-X.

Thief entered temple around 2 AM

According to police sources, the accused entered the temple alone at around 2:00 AM.

Officials said the man first tried to open the hundi, or donation box, using his hands. However, when he failed to break it open, he allegedly used a trident kept near the deity inside the temple.

Police said the accused picked up the trishul and repeatedly struck the donation box until it broke open. After collecting the cash stored inside, he fled the temple premises.

The theft remained unnoticed for several hours.

Temple staff discovered broken hundi in morning

The incident came to light later in the morning when temple priests arrived to begin daily rituals and prayers.

According to temple authorities, the priests found the hundi broken and cash missing from inside the donation box. Temple trustees later approached the Indiranagar Police Station and lodged an official complaint regarding the theft.

Police have now registered a case and started an investigation.

Officials are currently examining CCTV footage from the temple and nearby areas to identify and trace the accused.

CCTV footage goes viral online

Soon after the video surfaced online, it spread rapidly across social media platforms.

Many users reacted strongly after watching the accused clearly visible in the footage during the alleged theft.

CCTV footage shows attacker entering store

According to reports, the incident took place inside a near-empty supermarket where Meghnaben was present at the counter. The viral CCTV footage allegedly shows a person wearing animal-print track pants and a grey jacket entering the store with his face covered.

The culprit is then seen walking towards the counter and speaking briefly with Meghnaben.

A few moments later, the suspect allegedly puts his hand inside his pocket, pulls out a gun and opens fire at close range. The woman collapses after being shot. The attacker is then seen climbing over the counter and allegedly firing again before fleeing from the supermarket.

The footage also shows items falling on the floor as the suspect escapes from the scene.

Police launch investigation

After receiving information about the shooting, local police immediately reached the supermarket, sealed the area and began an investigation.

Authorities have also formed special teams to identify and arrest the accused.

Officials have not yet confirmed whether the shooting was linked only to robbery or if there may have been another motive behind the attack.

The investigation is currently ongoing.

Meghnaben Patel is survived by her husband, Upendrabhai Patel, and their two children, daughter Nakshiben and son Smith.

Milk prices are rising again in India. Two major dairy brands, Amul and Mother Dairy, have announced fresh price increases starting May 14. The changes apply to many milk types, including full cream milk, toned milk, cow milk, buffalo milk, and premium variants.

The increase ranges from Rs 1 to Rs 5 depending on the product and pack size. This move is expected to affect household budgets and food costs.

The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which sells products under the Amul brand, has increased milk prices by Rs 2 per litre across India. The new rates are effective from May 14.

In a statement, GCMMF said it has raised the prices of fresh pouch milk by Rs 2 per litre in major variants and packs. The cooperative explained that the decision was taken due to rising operational and production costs.

The price increase is about 2.5 to 3.5 per cent per litre, which the company says is lower than the average food inflation rate.

GCMMF said the cost of production has increased during the year. The main reasons include:

For a 500 ml pack, the revised prices are:

Cow milk: Rs 31
Gold: Rs 36

For 1 litre packs:

Amul Gold (1 litre): Rs 70 (earlier Rs 68)
Amul Taaza (1 litre): Rs 57 (earlier Rs 55)

Other changes:

Buffalo milk (500 ml): Rs 39 (earlier Rs 38)
Cow milk (500 ml): Rs 30 (earlier Rs 29)

Buffalo milk: Increased by Rs 4 per litre to Rs 80

Other variants such as Slim & Trim and Tea Special milk have also seen price increases across markets.

The last price revision by Amul was on May 1, 2025.

Mother Dairy has also increased prices across multiple stock-keeping units (SKUs).

1 litre: Increased from Rs 75 to Rs 80
500 ml: Increased from Rs 76 to Rs 80

Full cream milk

1 litre: Increased from Rs 69 to Rs 72

Milk is a daily item in most Indian homes. Any price change directly affects monthly spending. Experts say the increase may add pressure to middle-class budgets.

Since milk is used for tea, coffee, cooking and dairy products, the hike may also affect food prices indirectly.

Both companies say the increase is necessary because of higher costs in farming, transport, packaging and procurement.

Growth of Amul brand

Despite the price rise, the Amul brand has shown strong growth.

Total turnover crossed Rs 1 lakh crore in the 2025-26 financial year.
Turnover increased by 11 per cent.
GCMMF turnover rose by 11.4 per cent to Rs 73,450 crore in the last fiscal year.

GCMMF is described as the world’s largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative. It has:

3.6 million farmers
Collection of 31 million litres of milk every day
Distribution of more than 24 billion packs annually
Sales in 50-plus countries

Products include milk, butter, cheese, ghee, ice cream, and more.

The new milk price hike by Amul and Mother Dairy will affect consumers across India from May 14. The companies say rising costs have made the revision necessary.

While farmers may benefit from higher procurement prices, households may feel the impact in their monthly budgets. Milk remains one of the most important daily essentials in the country.
