Monsoon Delayed in Kerala as Heatwave Grips North India, Pre-Monsoon Rain Likely From May 29

India is likely to receive widespread pre-monsoon rainfall between May 29 and June 5, bringing possible relief from severe heatwave conditions. The southwest monsoon is still delayed over Kerala due to weak cloud activity.

After days of intense heat across large parts of the country, India may finally get some relief as pre-monsoon rainfall is expected to spread across nearly 80 to 90 percent of the country between May 29 and June 5. The expected rain becomes important as the southwest monsoon has still not reached Kerala, even though the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted its arrival around May 26.

Weather experts said weak cloud activity over the south-central Arabian Sea has slowed the monsoon’s progress. A cyclonic circulation in the region has reduced moisture and weakened rain-bearing clouds near Kerala. However, conditions are likely to improve within the next two to three days.

For the monsoon to officially enter Kerala, at least 14 selected weather stations in the state must receive 2.5 mm rainfall for two continuous days. So far, those conditions have not been fully met.

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has also released a fresh rainfall outlook for the next 15 days. According to its forecast maps, heavy rain activity is likely over south India, eastern states, the northeast and regions near the Bay of Bengal during the coming week.

The forecast is based on satellite observations along with oceanic and atmospheric data.

While rain may soon bring relief to many regions, severe heat continues to affect northwestern, central and eastern parts of India.

Uttar Pradesh’s Banda remained the hottest city in the country on Tuesday with a maximum temperature of 47.4°C. It was the ninth straight day that the temperature crossed 47°C in the district.

Several other cities in Uttar Pradesh also recorded extreme temperatures. Orai touched 45.8°C, Jhansi 45.5°C, Prayagraj 45.4°C, Agra 45.3°C and Hamirpur 45.2°C.

In Rajasthan, Sri Ganganagar recorded 47°C, making it the second hottest city in India. Bikaner and Phalodi both recorded 46°C, while Jaisalmer touched 45.6°C. Jaipur also remained hot at 43.2°C.

He also urged people to offer water to others highlighting the significance of kindness in extreme weather.

Many districts in Maharashtra continued to face extreme heat. Brahmapuri recorded 46.6°C, which was 3.5 degrees above normal. Chandrapur saw 46.4°C, Wardha 46°C, Nagpur’s Sonegaon area 45.5°C and Gondia 45.2°C.

In Haryana, Sirsa recorded 46°C and Rohtak 45.6°C. Punjab’s Bathinda reached 45.8°C.

Delhi also remained hotter than usual, with the maximum temperature touching 43.5°C, around 3 degrees above normal.

The IMD has issued heatwave alerts for parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Odisha, Punjab, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh on May 28.

At the same time, thunderstorms, strong winds and even hailstorms are expected in parts of Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi.

Several states, including Bihar, West Bengal, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, may witness strong winds blowing at speeds of 50 to 70 kmph along with light rain in some areas.

Weather officials said temperatures may fall by 3°C to 7°C in many northern states from May 29 onwards.

In the video, which has already generated over 6 million views on X handle (formerly Twitter), the auto driver was seen dropping off two school-going girls, one of whom happens to be the sister of the young boy, who accompanied the duo in the auto-rickshaw.

After getting down from the rickshaw, the boy was paying the fare for the ride, and the driver generally asked whether both were his sisters. To which the young boy stated that only one of them was his sister, while the other girl hopped onto their rickshaw to the school after she couldn’t get one, and he decided to pay for her ride using his own pocket money to ensure she reached her classes on time.

Acknowledging the noble act by the young boy, the auto driver refused to take the fare from the driver and instead asked him to buy something to eat with this money, praising his upbringing and stating that their happiness was more important to him than money.

Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project: First Services Expected by December 2028, Corridor 2 Set to Lead Rollout

K-RIDE has announced that Bengaluru's long-delayed suburban rail project is on track to begin operations by December 2028, with Corridor 2 expected to be the first to open. Construction and land acquisition have accelerated across key sections.

After years of delays, Bengaluru's long-awaited suburban rail project has entered a new phase, with Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Company (K-RIDE) confirming that the first train services are expected to begin by December 2028. As reported by Money Control, the agency says the project will not only improve public transport but also open up new areas for housing, business and future urban growth.

The suburban rail network, stretching nearly 148 kilometres across four corridors, was first proposed in 1983. It received approval from the Central Government in 2020, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone in June 2022. Although the original target was to complete the project by 2026, construction delays pushed the timeline further.

K-RIDE Managing Director Lakshman Singh, who took charge in December 2025, told Money Control that construction has now gathered pace across the priority corridors.

According to Singh, land acquisition for the main alignments and stations on Corridor 2, connecting Byappanahalli and Chikkabanavara, and Corridor 4, linking Heelalige with Rajanukunte, has largely been completed. The remaining land requirement mainly relates to flyovers and rail overbridges.

Construction has already started at stations on both corridors, while several major civil contracts have either been awarded or are in the final stages of tendering.

For the 46-kilometre Corridor 4, two out of four civil packages have already been tendered, while the remaining two are expected to be floated shortly. On Corridor 2, two of the three construction packages have been awarded, with fresh bids invited for the remaining section.

Corridors 1 and 3 Also Moving Forward

Singh said Indian Railways has approved the alignments for Corridor 1, which will connect KSR Bengaluru with Kempegowda International Airport through Devanahalli, and Corridor 3, linking Kengeri with Whitefield via KSR Bengaluru.

Officials are currently carrying out joint land measurements to identify the exact land needed before the formal acquisition process begins.

K-RIDE expects to complete most of the required land acquisition for these two corridors by the end of this year or early next year.

Responding to questions about repeated delays, Singh told Money Control railway projects of this scale naturally take several years to complete.

Unlike Metro construction, much of the suburban rail work is being carried out next to active railway tracks where passenger and freight trains continue to operate. This limits access to work sites and requires strict safety measures throughout construction.

He explained that even sections built at ground level involve extensive earthwork, track preparation and transitions between elevated and surface sections, making the work more complicated than many people expect.

While all four corridors remain part of the approved project, K-RIDE has decided to complete them in phases.

The agency's immediate focus is on Corridors 2 and 4, followed by Corridor 1. Within Corridor 3, priority will initially be given to the Bengaluru Cantonment-Kengeri section, while the Bengaluru Cantonment-Whitefield stretch will be developed later.

K-RIDE has committed to starting suburban rail operations by December 2028. If the full Corridor 2 cannot be completed by then, the Chikkabanavara-Yeshwanthpur section will be opened first.

Officials believe Yeshwanthpur will become an important transport hub where suburban rail, Metro, Indian Railways and BMTC bus services connect seamlessly, allowing passengers to change between different modes of transport more easily.

Unlike the Metro, which mainly follows major roads, the suburban rail network runs alongside existing railway lines that pass through many less-developed parts of Bengaluru.

K-RIDE believes these railway corridors will encourage new housing, commercial projects and better planned urban growth over the coming years. Many of these areas currently have low-rise buildings and large open spaces, making them suitable for future transit-oriented development.

The agency also said the Karnataka government is studying proposals for Regional Rapid Transit services similar to the Delhi-Meerut system. If approved, K-RIDE could also be involved in building those projects.

To prepare for future expansion, officials are considering the European Train Control System (ETCS), a signalling technology that can support higher-speed regional train services.

With construction now advancing across multiple corridors, K-RIDE says Bengaluru's suburban rail project has finally moved beyond planning and into large-scale execution, bringing the city closer to a transport network that has been discussed for more than four decades.

Five IAF personnel were killed after an AN-32 transport aircraft met with an accident during landing at the Jorhat Air Force Station in Assam. Co-pilot survived and is undergoing treatment. The IAF has ordered a court of inquiry into the crash.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has confirmed the death of five personnel after an AN-32 transport aircraft met with an accident at the airbase in Assam's Jorhat on Saturday. The tragic incident occurred during landing operations and has left the defence community mourning the loss of five air warriors.

While five personnel lost their lives, the aircraft's co-pilot survived the crash and is currently receiving medical treatment.

According to initial reports, the AN-32 aircraft caught fire after landing within the premises of the Jorhat Air Force Station. Emergency response teams and firefighters rushed to the scene soon after the accident was reported.

Senior Indian Air Force officials also reached the site as rescue and recovery efforts began.

The exact circumstances that led to the accident are still unclear.

A shocking family tragedy has come to light in Bengaluru, where a 75-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death by her own daughter and grandson following an argument linked to alcohol addiction and a long-running family dispute. The victim, identified as Jayamma, was allegedly attacked inside a flat in Kengeri on Sunday. Police have arrested her daughter, Bhagyalakshmi (49), and her 26-year-old grandson, Kushal, in connection with the murder.

Dispute Turned Violent

According to the police, the family had been facing frequent disputes for several months. Preliminary investigation suggests that both accused were addicted to alcohol. Police said Jayamma had objected to their drinking and questioned the handling of family property. The disagreement reportedly turned violent between 5 am and 8 am on Sunday.

Investigators said Bhagyalakshmi and Kushal allegedly assaulted Jayamma using a cricket bat and a wooden pestle commonly used for preparing ragi mudde. The elderly woman suffered serious injuries and died at the spot.

Officers said the accused allegedly tried to hide the crime before neighbours became suspicious.

Neighbours Alerted Police

The case came to light after residents of Monisha Enclave Apartment heard loud screams and continuous commotion from the flat. They informed the police, who reached the spot and found Jayamma lying unconscious near the bathroom.

According to the complaint filed by a resident, Jayamma regularly visited her daughter's home, where loud quarrels were often heard.

Residents also told investigators that Kushal had previously been admitted to a de-addiction centre after repeated complaints about disturbances. However, the problems reportedly started again after he returned home.

Mahika, who recently moved to Germany for her master’s degree, regularly shares videos about adjusting to life abroad. In one of her latest Instagram clips, she spoke honestly about missing daily metro rides in Delhi while showing scenes from her commute in Germany.

Her heartfelt comments quickly connected with thousands of social media users, many of whom agreed that the Delhi Metro remains one of the city’s biggest strengths.

‘I Miss Delhi Metro Every Single Day’

In the video, Mahika can be seen travelling through Germany’s railway and metro system while speaking in the background about her experience.

“Dear Delhi Metro and DMRC, I miss you so much every single day and I miss travelling in you so much,” she said in the clip. She later laughed at how emotional the sentence sounded.

Mahika explained that Germany’s transport network was safe and organised, but she still felt that it did not match the comfort and convenience she experienced in Delhi.

“I have told everyone how Delhi Metro is the best in the world,” she said. “I’m not saying it’s bad here. It’s really safe and efficient, but it is not DMRC.”

Life Abroad Changed Her Perspective

The student shared that shifting to another country had changed the way she viewed many things back home. According to her, living abroad made her appreciate Delhi Metro even more.

“I have always appreciated Delhi Metro, but coming here made me realise how much I’ve underappreciated it,” she said in the video.

Mahika also admitted that while Delhi has many problems, the metro system is not one of them.

“Literally, I know there are 20,000 things that are bad about Delhi, but Delhi Metro is not one of them,” she added.

She ended the clip by thanking DMRC and saying Delhi residents may not realise how valuable the service truly is until they live elsewhere.

Family alleges abusive behaviour on road

The complainant alleged that the woman rider used abusive language in public, creating panic and discomfort among commuters and people nearby.

The family further claimed that her behaviour caused fear on the road and disturbed traffic movement in the area.

Delhi-NCR CNG Prices Jump Again, Rate Crosses Rs 83 Per Kg After Rs 2 Increase

CNG prices in Delhi-NCR have been increased by Rs 2 per kilogram, taking the new rate to Rs 83.09 per kg from Tuesday morning. The hike comes after recent petrol and diesel price increases and is being linked to rising fuel costs amid global crisis.

People in Delhi and the NCR region are set to face another rise in fuel expenses as CNG prices have been increased by Rs 2 per kilogram from 6 am onwards. With the latest revision, CNG in Delhi will now cost Rs 83.09 per kg.

With the latest revision, CNG prices in Delhi have gone up from Rs 81.09 per kg to Rs 83.09 per kg. This is the third increase in CNG prices in recent days, taking the total hike to Rs 6 per kilogram since May 15.

New CNG rates have also been announced for nearby cities. In Noida, Ghaziabad and Greater Noida, CNG will now cost Rs 91.70 per kg, while in Gurugram the price has increased to Rs 88.12 per kilogram.

The hike comes shortly after increases in petrol and diesel prices, adding more pressure on household and travel budgets.

Oil companies have also raised petrol and diesel prices for the fourth time this month. On May 25, petrol prices were increased by Rs 2.61 per litre and diesel prices by Rs 2.71 per litre.

After the latest hike, petrol in Delhi is now priced at Rs 102.12 per litre, while diesel costs Rs 95.20 per litre.

According to the latest data, petrol prices have increased by Rs 7.40 per litre in the last 11 days, while diesel prices have gone up by Rs 7.52 per litre during the same period. The price revisions happened on May 15, May 19, May 23 and May 25.

Auto drivers, cab operators and daily commuters are expected to feel the biggest impact of the latest fuel price increase.

CNG prices in Delhi-NCR have now been increased for the third time in recent days. With the latest Rs 2 per kilogram hike, the total increase in CNG prices has reached Rs 6 per kg in just 12 days. After petrol and diesel became more expensive, CNG is also putting extra pressure on the budgets of common people and daily commuters across the region.

Why Fuel Prices Are Increasing

The main reason behind the rise in petrol, diesel and CNG prices is the sharp increase in crude oil prices in the international market. Before tensions and conflict between Iran and the United States increased, crude oil was trading near 70 dollars per barrel. It has now crossed 100 dollars per barrel.

Rising crude oil prices have put pressure on oil companies. Fuel retailers say the latest price hikes are aimed at reducing their losses caused by the increasing cost of importing crude oil and fuel products.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma said on May 25 that government oil companies are currently facing losses of nearly Rs 600 crore every day.

Before the price revisions started on May 15, oil companies were reportedly losing nearly Rs 1,000 crore daily on the sale of petrol, diesel and domestic cooking gas.

The latest increase is expected to hit commercial vehicle drivers the hardest, as CNG is widely used in autos, taxis, school vans and private cars across Delhi-NCR. Auto-rickshaw drivers say repeated price hikes are reducing their daily earnings and making it difficult to manage expenses.

Auto and taxi unions have also warned that rising fuel costs could lead to higher passenger fares and transport charges in the coming days.

Experts believe the latest fuel price hikes could affect the prices of many daily-use items in the coming weeks.

Transport costs may increase as truck and tempo operators are likely to charge more for carrying goods. This could make vegetables, fruits and ration items arriving from other states more expensive.

Farmers may also face higher expenses because tractors and pumping sets require fuel, which may increase farming costs and eventually raise grain prices.

At the same time, bus fares, school transport charges, auto-rickshaw fares and taxi fares may also rise in Delhi-NCR and nearby cities.

Demand For CNG Vehicles Still Rising

Despite repeated price hikes, demand for CNG vehicles continues to grow in several cities. In Bhopal, sales of CNG vehicles have reportedly increased by nearly 50% over the last three years.

Showrooms in the city are selling around 10 to 15 CNG-based vehicles every day. Dealers say buyers still prefer CNG vehicles because they offer better mileage compared to petrol and diesel vehicles, and running costs remain lower despite recent price increases.

Protest Erupts as ED Team Tries to Leave

According to officials, ED officers had conducted searches at around 10 locations across Kerala under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). One of the locations included a rented residence linked to Pinarayi Vijayan in the state capital.

As the ED team came out after completing the searches, CPI(M) supporters gathered outside the gate and raised slogans against the central agency. Videos from the spot showed heated arguments, pushing and chaos near the residence.

Kerala High Court Allowed ED Probe to Continue

Recently, the Kerala High Court allowed the ED investigation in the CMRL case to continue.

Justice T.R. Ravi dismissed petitions filed by CMRL and four of its senior officials challenging the ED’s Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) and investigation.

The petitioners had argued that no offence under money laundering laws was made out and that the ED did not have the authority to continue the probe.

Even though the case does not directly accuse Pinarayi Vijayan, the issue has remained politically explosive because of the alleged links involving his daughter’s company.

The latest clash outside the former Chief Minister’s residence has further increased political tension in Kerala. While CPI(M) leaders accused the ED of targeting opposition parties, critics questioned the violent protest outside the residence.

Karnataka High Court has ruled that a wife earning more than her husband cannot automatically receive maintenance based on gender alone. The court said financial circumstances of both spouses must be examined.

The Karnataka High Court has ruled that a wife who earns more than her husband cannot automatically claim maintenance simply because she is a woman. The court said maintenance should be decided after examining the financial condition of both spouses and not on the assumption that a husband must always support his wife.

The ruling came while hearing a petition challenging a family court order that had directed a husband to pay his estranged wife ₹20,000 every month as interim maintenance, according to a report by the Times of India.

According to the case records, the husband argued before the High Court that his estranged wife was earning around ₹1 lakh per month, while his own monthly salary was ₹60,646.

He claimed that she was financially independent and capable of supporting herself. Therefore, he argued that there was no reason for him to pay interim maintenance.

The wife, however, told the court that she required financial support to repay debts that she had allegedly taken for her marriage. However, she did not submit details of the loans, pending payments or monthly instalments in support of her claim.

Justice Chillakur Sumalatha allowed the husband's petition and set aside the family court's interim maintenance order.

The High Court observed that family courts should not assume that maintenance must always be granted to a wife simply because she is a woman.

The court said that where a wife is financially secure, earns more than her husband and does not have additional responsibilities such as caring for children, maintenance should not be awarded solely on the basis of gender.

The judge further observed that a spouse seeking maintenance must show that they are unable to maintain the same standard of living without financial assistance.

The court noted that the wife's admitted monthly income of ₹1 lakh was significantly higher than the husband's salary of ₹60,646.

It held that she was capable of maintaining herself and that requiring the husband to pay ₹20,000 every month in such circumstances was not legally justified.

As a result, the High Court declared the interim maintenance order unsustainable and set it aside.

Wife Cannot Be Presumed to Be Earning at Interim Stage, Rules Delhi High Court

The High Court clarified that the ruling applies only to the interim maintenance order challenged before it and will not affect the final outcome of the matrimonial dispute.

The court also said the wife remains free to seek maintenance in the future if there is a significant change in her financial circumstances or other relevant factors.

Who Was Bhavani?

Bhavani, originally from Magadi, had moved to Bengaluru two years ago in search of work. She was employed as a cashier at a mobile phone shop and lived alone in a rented house. Her parents had recently spoken to her about marriage. Bhavani agreed to the proposal before returning to Bengaluru. Just two days after coming back, she was found dead, leaving her family and neighbours in shock.

During the investigation, police learned that Bhavani had been in a relationship with an auto driver. The two had been living together for some time, with the man repeatedly assuring her that he would marry her.

However, Bhavani later discovered that he was already married and had a son. The revelation left her deeply distressed, knowing her family would never accept her becoming his second wife.

Unable to see a way forward, she agreed to the arranged marriage suggested by her parents. But according to police, she remained emotionally torn between her family and her relationship.

What Police Believe Happened

Investigators said the auto driver later visited Bhavani's house and allegedly convinced her that they should die together. The pair reportedly agreed to end their lives by consuming poison.

Police allege that while Bhavani drank the poison, the man consumed only a small amount and spilled the rest around his mouth to make it appear that he had also taken it.

Investigators further allege that he later changed his mind after thinking about his wife and young son. To ensure Bhavani died, he allegedly strangled her.

The man survived and is currently undergoing treatment in hospital, while police continue their investigation into the case.

A 45-year-old Indian woman from Gujarat was shot dead during a suspected robbery attempt at a supermarket in the United States, leaving her family and local community in shock. The victim has been identified as Meghnaben Patel, who had reportedly been working at the supermarket in Virginia for the last 10 years.

According to her family, Meghnaben originally belonged to Jantral village in Visnagar district of Gujarat’s Mehsana region. Her parents, Karsanbhai Patel and Kapilaben, still live in the village. CCTV footage shows attacker entering store

According to reports, the incident took place inside a near-empty supermarket where Meghnaben was present at the counter. The viral CCTV footage allegedly shows a person wearing animal-print track pants and a grey jacket entering the store with his face covered.

The culprit is then seen walking towards the counter and speaking briefly with Meghnaben.

A few moments later, the suspect allegedly puts his hand inside his pocket, pulls out a gun and opens fire at close range. The woman collapses after being shot. The attacker is then seen climbing over the counter and allegedly firing again before fleeing from the supermarket.

The footage also shows items falling on the floor as the suspect escapes from the scene.

Police launch investigation

After receiving information about the shooting, local police immediately reached the supermarket, sealed the area and began an investigation.

Authorities have also formed special teams to identify and arrest the accused.

Officials have not yet confirmed whether the shooting was linked only to robbery or if there may have been another motive behind the attack.

The investigation is currently ongoing.

Meghnaben Patel is survived by her husband, Upendrabhai Patel, and their two children, daughter Nakshiben and son Smith.

Her death has deeply affected her family members both in India and in the United States.

Residents of her native village in Gujarat also expressed sadness after hearing about the incident involving a woman who had spent many years working abroad to support her family.

New Delhi: India and the United States will conduct the 22nd edition of their annual joint army exercise, Yudh Abhyas, in the first week of September, deploying roughly 350 soldiers each across two geographically contrasting locations: the high-altitude snowfields of Auli in Uttarakhand and the arid expanse of the Mahajan field firing range in Rajasthan.

Why Auli?

The choice of Auli carries strategic weight. Situated at an altitude of roughly 2,500 metres and approximately 95 km from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, the exercise site at Auli offers realistic training ground for high-altitude operations of the kind that have become central to India’s military thinking since the prolonged stand-off in eastern Ladakh that began in 2020.

The three-week exercise will, for the first time in this series, incorporate AH-64 Apache attack helicopters and long-range vectored assets, giving both armies the opportunity to practise combined-arms operations, precision engagement and simulated close-air support across terrain that shifts from thin-air mountain ridges to open desert.

The Apache’s inclusion signals a deliberate effort to refine air-ground integration, target acquisition and dynamic manoeuvres under varied geographic and climatic conditions.

Training at Auli will test high-altitude logistics, acclimatization protocols and infantry manoeuvres where reduced oxygen and harsh weather impose a physical ceiling on operations.

Drills at Rajasthan's Mahajan

At Mahajan, the focus will shift to live-fire drills, mechanized manoeuvres and integrated artillery-aircraft coordination.

The previous edition, held in Alaska in September 2025, placed both armies in sub-arctic conditions.

Launched in 2004 as a modest bilateral initiative, Yudh Abhyas has grown into one of the largest recurring land-forces engagements between the two countries.

Over two decades, its scope has widened from counterinsurgency and counterterrorism drills to high-altitude warfare and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, evolving in step with India’s expanding defence relationship with Washington and with the changing security calculus in the Indo-Pacific.

Yudh Abhyas is one of a battery of bilateral and multilateral exercises in which India and the US participate together. First, the ancient social hierarchy called 'Shi-Nong-Gong-Shang', and second, the modern 'Hukou' system which is still in place. Shang: Merchants and traders (last, as Confucian thinkers were suspicious of those who made profits)

According to historians, this system was formalised during the 'Han Dynasty' around 111 AD. But historians say it shouldn't be compared to India's caste system. It was a classification based on profession, not a strictly hereditary system. The son of a merchant could study, pass the imperial exams, and become a high-ranking official. So, they say it was closer to India's ancient 'Varna system' rather than a rigid caste system.

The Communist Era's 'Hukou' System (Still in use today)

Even though the old professional system is gone, the 'Hukou' household registration system, introduced in the 1950s, divides people into two groups and provides benefits based on birth. You can think of it as China's 'internal passport'. It decides whether a citizen is a rural resident or an urban resident based on their registration. Their access to education, healthcare, housing, and social security depends on this status.

In his book 'A Social Dharmic History of India', author Aravindan Neelakandan argues that Mao Zedong's government turned the Hukou system into an extremely cruel and rigid form of social stratification. "The Hukou system gave officials the power to determine a person's position, role, and available resources right from birth," he wrote.

From 1959, this Hukou status became hereditary. This meant that the children of rural farmers were strictly prevented from migrating and settling in cities. Anthropologists Sulamith Potter and Jack Potter have even called it a "caste-like barrier".

Why do scholars call it an 'urban caste system'?

It's not just Indians who are making this comparison. A Dean at the Chinese University of Hong Kong actually titled an essay "The Chinese Urban Caste System in Transition"!

According to him, China introduced this system to speed up Soviet-style industrialisation. The profits from rural agriculture were used for urban development. As a result, urban residents got guaranteed jobs, subsidised housing, healthcare, and pensions, while rural residents were left out of all these benefits. This effectively created two classes of citizens in China.

According to the US-based 'Diplomatic Courier' magazine, even if people with a rural Hukou move to the city, they are given low-paying, highly dangerous jobs. This has led not just to economic inequality but also to social discrimination. The magazine analysed that China has divided itself into "two separate nations".

So, does China really have a caste system?

European colonisers used the word 'caste' to describe India's profession-based system. The word 'caste' itself comes from the Spanish and Portuguese word 'casta', which means "breed, race, or lineage". Its root is the Latin word 'castus', meaning "pure or chaste". This means such hierarchical systems also existed in Europe. So, the answer to whether China has a caste system depends on how we define 'caste':

Yes: If we consider 'caste' to be a system that distributes opportunities, education, health, and resources discriminatorily based on birth, then China's 'Hukou' system shows major signs of being a caste system.

No: But, if 'caste' is not just about birth-based benefits but also includes endogamy (marrying within the community), religious rituals, concepts of purity and pollution, and a deep cultural identity, then China's Hukou system definitely does not fit this description.

However, one thing is undeniable: the Hukou system has created a massive social divide in modern China. Whether to call it a 'caste system' or an 'administrative classification' remains a topic of global debate.

An 82-year-old roadside snack seller from Mumbai has become an internet favourite after a video showing his daily routine went viral on social media. The video, shared by Mumbai-based content creator Aradhana Chatterjee, introduced viewers to Mansukh Kaka, who spends nearly 12 hours every day selling homemade farsan to support himself and his family.

From Saree Shop Employee to Roadside Vendor

According to Chatterjee, Mansukh Kaka spent most of his life working as a salesperson at a saree shop. However, he lost his job after falling ill during the Covid-19 pandemic. His son also had to leave work to care for him during that difficult period.

After recovering, Mansukh Kaka decided not to sit idle. Instead, he started a small roadside stall near his home, selling homemade snacks prepared by his sister.

Homemade Snacks and Long Working Hours

The video showed neatly arranged containers filled with around 20 varieties of snacks, including khakra, chakli and other farsan items. Chatterjee explained that the snacks are prepared fresh at home before being packed and brought to the stall each day.

Despite spending long hours waiting for customers, Mansukh Kaka reportedly earns only about ₹300 daily. One moment that particularly impressed viewers showed him carefully recording every sale and expense in a small diary.

Social Media Comes Together to Help

The video sparked an outpouring of support online. Many viewers admired how neatly dressed and professional Mansukh Kaka looked, noting that his tucked-in shirt and disciplined approach reflected his self-respect and commitment to work.

Several people who had met him in person described him as kind and gentle. Others asked for his location so they could buy from his stall directly, while many requested donation details to support him financially.

As the story spread, users encouraged fellow Mumbaikars to visit the stall and purchase snacks, saying that supporting his business could be more meaningful than simply making donations.
