V. D. Satheesan is a lawyer-turned-politician and 6-time MLA from Paravur. After serving as Leader of Opposition, he led UDF to a landslide win in 2026 Kerala election with 102 seats. Following internal discussions, he was chosen as CM-elect.

Vattassery Damodaran Satheesan, known as V. D. Satheesan, was born on 31 May 1964. He is an Indian politician and a lawyer. He is currently the Chief Minister-elect of Kerala. He has been the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Paravur Assembly constituency since 2001. Over the years, he has built a strong political career through elections, leadership roles, and active work inside his party.

Satheesan is widely known for his strong speeches and clear debates in the Kerala Assembly. He has often spoken firmly against the ruling parties. Many people see him as a confident and aggressive Opposition leader.

Satheesan’s public life began during his student days. In 1986–1987, he served as the chairman of the Mahatma Gandhi University Union. This role gave him early experience in leadership and public work.

He also worked as the secretary of the National Students’ Union. These positions helped him understand student issues and organise public activities. His time in student politics became the base of his later political career.

VD Satheesan entered mainstream politics in 1996. In that year, he contested the Kerala Legislative Assembly election from Paravur. However, he lost to P. Raju of the Communist Party of India. At that time, Paravur was considered a strong area for the Communist Party.

Even after the defeat, Satheesan continued his political work. He did not stop campaigning or connecting with people. His persistence helped him gain support in the constituency.

In 2001, Satheesan won his first election to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from Paravur. At that time, he was working as an advocate in the Kerala High Court. His victory marked an important turning point in his political journey.

After that, he continued to win elections from the same constituency:

2006: He defeated K. M. Dinakaran.

2011: He defeated Pannyan Raveendran of the Communist Party of India by 11,349 votes.

2016: He defeated Sarada Mohan of the Communist Party of India by 20,634 votes.

He also served as the Chief Whip of the Indian National Congress in the 12th Assembly.

These repeated victories showed strong public support in Paravur.

In the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election, Satheesan was elected for the fifth time from Paravur. He defeated M. T. Nixon of the Communist Party of India by about 22,000 votes.

On 22 May 2021, the Congress Working Committee named him the Leader of the Opposition in the 15th Kerala Legislative Assembly. In this role, he led the opposition party inside the House.

During this period, he became well known for his debates, especially his strong arguments against Finance Minister T. M. Thomas Isaac. His speeches were widely discussed in political circles.

The 2026 Kerala Legislative Assembly election became a major moment in his career. Satheesan led the United Democratic Front (UDF) to a big victory. The alliance won 102 seats out of 140, giving it an absolute majority.

This result ended the ten-year rule of the Left Democratic Front (LDF). The victory was described as a landslide win. It created strong political change in the state.
    View this post on Instagram
A post shared by V D Satheesan (@vdsatheesanleaderofopposition)

    View this post on Instagram
A post shared by V D Satheesan (@vdsatheesanleaderofopposition)

In addition to leading the alliance, Satheesan contested from Paravur for the sixth time. He won again with a margin of 20,600 votes. He received 78,658 votes, while the LDF candidate E. T. Taison received 58,058 votes.

This personal victory showed that he still had strong support in his constituency.

Selection as Chief Minister-elect

After the UDF’s big win, there was high suspense about the next Chief Minister. Within the Congress party, there were different views. Some leaders supported Satheesan, while others backed senior leaders such as K. C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala.

The decision process involved discussions in New Delhi. Senior leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, held meetings. Other leaders such as Deepa Dasmunsi, Ajay Maken, and Mukul Wasnik were also part of the talks.

The Congress Legislature Party meeting took place at the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram. In this meeting, Satheesan was formally elected as the leader of the CLP. This step made him the official Chief Minister-elect.

His selection ended days of internal discussion and uncertainty.

Before the official announcement, supporters gathered outside his home in Aluva. Many people celebrated even before the final decision. He left for Thiruvananthapuram with his family. Party workers wished him success.

Although he did not speak to reporters before leaving, his supporters were confident that he would receive the top post. Television reports showed cheering party workers.
    View this post on Instagram
A post shared by V D Satheesan (@vdsatheesanleaderofopposition)

Role of alliance partners

After the UDF victory, alliance partners also began discussing their expectations. Kerala Congress (J) chairman P. J. Joseph said his party would ask for two ministerial positions in the new government. He said they would raise this demand in the UDF meeting.

He also stated that the allies had shared their views after being asked. This showed that discussions were taking place between partners before final government formation.

After Satheesan’s election as CLP leader, steps began for forming the new government. Reports said that the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Sunny Joseph had contacted the Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar as part of the process.

There were also plans for newly elected MLAs to visit the Governor’s office. With the leadership issue settled, the party was expected to move quickly towards cabinet discussions and oath-taking.

Political style and public image

V. D. Satheesan is known for his active role in debates. As Opposition Leader, he focused on policy discussions and criticism of government decisions. His background as a lawyer helped him in legal and policy arguments.

Over time, he became one of the main faces of the Congress party in Kerala. His steady rise from student politics to Chief Minister-elect shows long-term dedication.

V. D. Satheesan’s political journey spans nearly three decades. From losing his first election in 1996 to leading a historic alliance victory in 2026, his career shows patience and steady effort. He served as MLA for six terms, became Chief Whip, then Leader of the Opposition, and now Chief Minister-elect.

His rise follows a clear path of public support in Paravur and leadership inside the Congress party. With the UDF winning a strong majority, Satheesan now stands ready to lead Kerala’s next government.

(With inputs from agencies)

After discussing her friend's challenging commute during the city's peak traffic and severe rain, a Bengaluru lady started an online conversation. Taking to Instagram, content creator Sanya Singh posted a video in which she spoke about the steep auto fare her friend allegedly paid for a 15 km ride. In the video, Singh said, “I did not expect this from Bangalore! Yesterday, my friend paid Rs 1200 to an auto-driver for a 15km ride. 1200! You could buy household groceries twice for that amount. That’s why I can’t romanticize Bangalore's rain because instead of violins, you just hear horns blaring here. Booking a ride takes more effort than getting a college admission! Whether our careers take off or not, these auto-drivers are definitely making it big.”

Watch Viral Video

    View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Sanya Singh (@sanya.unfiltered)

The clip was shared with a caption that read: “It took her 3 hours to reach home. She paid ₹1.2k just so the auto driver wouldn’t leave her midway. Peak traffic during the rains.”

Social Media Reactions

Social media users have responded to the video in a variety of ways, with many concurring that commuting in Bengaluru during the rain can rapidly become costly, unpleasant, and draining. Singh's experience was echoed by a number of users who claimed to have had same difficulties while attempting to reserve cars or taxis during busy times.

"Bangalore rain is not for the weak," a person said. "Every fare becomes a premium fare the moment it rains," another person remarked. "Paying ₹1200 for 15 km is painful, but getting home safely during peak traffic sometimes feels like a luxury," remarked a third customer. "This is why people avoid stepping out when it rains in Bengaluru," was another response.

Additionally, some users noted that commuters frequently have little options when public transportation connectivity does not coincide with their trips. One individual said, "Autos and taxis know people are desperate, so prices shoot up." "Three hours for 15 km explains the real problem, the traffic is worse than the fare," another person said.

NEET-UG 2026, held on May 3 for 22.79 lakh students across India and abroad, has been cancelled after allegations of paper leak. Investigations linked suspected question circulation to Rajasthan and Kerala. The Government has ordered a CBI probe.

The NEET-UG 2026 examination has been cancelled following serious allegations of a paper leak and examination irregularities. The decision has created concern across the country, as this is India’s main entrance exam for medical courses.

The exam was conducted on May 3 in pen-and-paper mode. Around 22.79 lakh students appeared for the test. It was held across 551 cities in India and 14 cities abroad. In total, more than 5,400 examination centres were used.

Soon after the exam, reports from several states suggested that question papers may have been leaked before the test began.

Protests outside Shastri Bhavan

After the cancellation announcement, protestors were seen climbing barricades at Shastri Bhavan as they expressed anger over the situation. Many students and supporters demanded strict action and a fair investigation.

The cancellation has placed lakhs of medical aspirants in a difficult position. For many, this exam decides their future in medicine and related fields.

The issue began shortly after the examination was held. Initial complaints came from Rajasthan and Bihar. Investigators started looking into claims that exam-related material had circulated through messaging apps and private groups.

Students and coaching institutes also reported unusually accurate “prediction sheets”. These sheets appeared to match a large number of questions from the actual paper. This raised further doubts about fairness.

As more information came out, allegations grew that some candidates may have received access to questions hours before the exam.

Investigators are also checking claims that answer keys and paper sets were shared through organised networks across different states.

The Rajasthan Police Special Operations Group (SOG) began a detailed investigation into the matter.

The investigation reportedly found links between the suspicious paper and both Kerala and the Sikar district of Rajasthan.

According to the reports, an MBBS student in Kerala, originally from Churu in Rajasthan, sent a 'question bank' on WhatsApp on May 1. The message was sent to his friend in Sikar, who runs a paying guest (PG) accommodation.

Sources said the question bank had around 300 questions. When officials compared these with the original NEET paper, they were reportedly surprised. About 150 of the 180 questions matched exactly.

This finding increased concerns about a possible organised leak.

Spread of the material

After receiving the question bank, the Sikar-based PG operator allegedly shared it through WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms, according to News18 report.

The material was reportedly passed to students staying at his PG. From there, it spread further through career counsellors and other students.

Interestingly, after the exam, the same PG operator filed a complaint at the Udyog Nagar police station and also informed the National Testing Agency (NTA). Investigators are now checking whether he made the complaint out of fear of being exposed.

According to news agency ANI, Rajasthan SOG Additional Director General Vishal Bansal said investigators were reviewing a guess paper containing about 410 questions.

Out of these, around 120 questions reportedly appeared in the Chemistry section of NEET-UG 2026. He also stated that the paper had been circulating among students for 15 days to one month before the examination.

These findings added more pressure on authorities to take action.

NTA cancels the exam

The National Testing Agency said it decided to cancel the exam after reviewing inputs shared by central agencies and law enforcement bodies.

In its official statement, NTA said the findings raised concerns about the integrity of the examination process. The agency said the exam “could not be allowed to stand” in order to maintain transparency and trust.

The decision was taken with the approval of the Government of India.

CBI investigation ordered

The Government has referred the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a full and detailed inquiry.

The CBI will examine all allegations, including how the question material circulated and whether organised groups were involved.

NTA has said it will fully cooperate with the CBI and provide all records, data, and support needed for the investigation.

Impact on students

The cancellation has created uncertainty for lakhs of students preparing for medical courses such as MBBS and BDS.

For many aspirants, NEET is one of the most important exams in their lives. The sudden cancellation has caused stress, frustration, and confusion.

Some students have expressed relief that alleged malpractice will not go unchecked. Others feel disappointed because they must prepare again.

What NTA has clarified about re-exam

NTA has confirmed that the examination will be re-conducted on dates that will be announced separately.

The agency has also clarified important points:

Registration data will remain valid.

Candidature details will be carried forward.

Examination centres chosen earlier will stay the same.

No fresh registration will be required.

No extra examination fee will be charged.

Fees already paid will be refunded.

The exam will be conducted using NTA’s internal resources.

Fresh admit cards will be issued before the new exam date.

Candidates and parents are advised to wait for official updates and follow only NTA’s communication channels.

The issue has also drawn political attention. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi criticised the situation. He described the exam as an 'auction' and claimed that many questions were being sold on WhatsApp hours before the test.

In a post on social media platform X, he said that lakhs of students worked hard for months, but their future was affected in one night due to alleged leaks.

He also mentioned that over the past 10 years, there have been multiple paper leak cases and re-exams.

NTA cites integrity concerns

In its statement, NTA said the decision to cancel the exam was taken after examining inputs in coordination with central agencies.

The agency said law enforcement findings raised serious concerns about the integrity of the examination process. It added that the cancellation was necessary to ensure transparency in the system.

NTA stressed that the step was taken in the interest of students and to protect trust in the national examination system.

What happens next

The focus now shifts to two main areas: the CBI investigation and the announcement of new exam dates.

The re-conducted examination schedule and re-issued admit card details will be shared through official channels in the coming days.

Students and parents are advised to ignore unverified reports on social media and rely only on official updates.

The cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 marks a serious moment for India’s education system. With allegations of a leak, organised circulation of questions, and ongoing investigations, authorities have chosen to cancel the exam to protect fairness.

While the decision has caused inconvenience, it aims to restore confidence in the process. For now, students must stay calm, follow official updates, and continue their preparation for the re-exam.

West Bengal is witnessing a historic political shift as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) moves towards a massive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. According to trends from the Election Commission of India (ECI) as of 8:26 PM, the BJP has already won 136 seats and is leading in 72 more, taking it well past the majority mark in the 294-member Assembly.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, is far behind with 49 wins and leads in 30 seats. This marks the end of the party’s 15-year rule in the state.

A major political turning point

This election has changed Bengal’s political landscape. The BJP, once a minor player in the state, has now emerged as the dominant force. With around 46% vote share, it has clearly overtaken the TMC, which stands at about 40.8%.

The high voter turnout of over 90% across two phases shows how strongly people participated in this election. The results suggest that voters were looking for change.

Key leaders and major battles

Several top leaders were in the spotlight, including Mamata Banerjee, Suvendu Adhikari and Dilip Ghosh. While the BJP gained across regions, some constituencies remained closely contested, showing that the political fight was intense.

Full list of winners (constituency-wise)

BJP Winners

Mekliganj — Strong campaign strategy

The party ran an aggressive campaign and raised multiple issues to challenge the ruling TMC.

2. Wider voter reach

BJP expanded its presence across regions where it had little influence earlier.

3. Clear messaging

The campaign focused on development, governance, and change, which appealed to many voters.

4. Anti-incumbency

After 15 years of TMC rule, some voters were ready for a change.

Impact on Bengal politics

This election marks a turning point in West Bengal politics. The state, once dominated by Left parties and later by TMC, now sees the BJP as the main political force.

The result is significant because it breaks long-standing political patterns. The BJP’s rise shows that voter behaviour is changing and new political equations are forming.

The 2026 West Bengal Assembly election results have changed the state’s political landscape in a big way. The BJP’s historic win signals a new phase, while the TMC faces the task of rebuilding.

This election marks a major turning point for West Bengal. The BJP’s rise shows a clear shift in voter mood. The TMC, which ruled for 15 years, now faces its toughest setback.

The focus will now move to governance, jobs, and development. Voters will expect quick action from the new leadership.

All three were students at Mar Baselios Dental College.

Group Visit To Vadattupara River

According to police, nine students from the college went to the Palavanpady river in Vadattupara around noon, as it was a holiday.

The UDF's massive win was less about their own brilliance and more about the LDF's series of blunders. The Left front's organizational arrogance, a shift from its secular stand, and internal squabbles proved to be its undoing. The UDF simply took advantage of these mistakes with a united and focused campaign.

Thiruvananthapuram: While there are many factors that worked in the UDF's favour, the truth is that the LDF, which was aiming for a continuous term, gifted the victory to the UDF with its own mistakes. The LDF was confident of a third term, but the UDF scored big in every area where the Left faltered. The Left front's decision to dilute its core policies and compromise its secular image for a few extra votes led to this humiliating defeat. The election result is also a tight slap on the face of the CPM leadership for its organizational arrogance. The answer to why LDF lost, or why UDF won, isn't a simple one.

LDF leadership

While the LDF claimed ten years of continuous rule brought development, its own party structure suffered serious damage. The leadership was arrogant, thinking power was the only solution. Their working style became disconnected from the people, and they suppressed any voice of dissent. The Left's hallmark was always secularism, but this time, their leaders' speeches were found attacking minority religious leaderships in public. Whenever these allegations surfaced, the leaders would just double down and justify their stance. The UDF, however, did its homework and managed to convey the seriousness of this shift to the public without losing its intensity.

Community leaders like Vellappally Natesan made hateful speeches against minorities, and despite claiming to be on the Left, the CPM leadership didn't even bother to correct him. As a result, when forces like Jamaat-e-Islami tried to convert the public sentiment that arose after the CAA protests into votes, the Left front walked right into the trap. On top of all this, the leadership's greed for parliamentary posts created deep cracks even in the party's strongholds. M.V. Govindan did not ask Syamala to step aside, even when there were clear signs of dissent among the party workers.

The leadership also failed to pacify senior leaders who expressed their grievances with the party's methods. In the end, the very people who were sidelined and mocked for their 'parliamentary ambitions' became a thorn in the party's side in its own forts. Coming to the campaign issues, the government's achievements didn't click with the voters, and even controversies like Sabarimala didn't have a major impact on the voting. Even Pinarayi Vijayan had to sweat it out in his own constituency. If you look at the leaders who won easily, you'll see they weren't just party faces. Their victory had more to do with their personal merit and influence in the constituency than any major contribution from the party or the front.

Left's politics

The Left's politics was born from protests, but its government's attitude towards recent protests, like the ASHA and nurses' strikes, disappointed even its core supporters. This created a lot of sympathy for the protesters among women who interact with these groups. The LDF also couldn't counter the narrative of the 'Sabarimala gold smuggling'—a ghost unleashed by the Global Ayyappa Sangamam.

The fact that the BJP didn't effectively use this issue helped consolidate Hindu votes in favour of the Congress. The Congress, on its part, worked hard to keep the Christian communities, who were leaning towards the BJP, on their side. They cleverly used the FCRA issue to their advantage. The Congress also effectively used the Jamaat-e-Islami allegation against the LDF during the final days of the campaign. While the CPM strongly opposed Jamaat-e-Islami, it had no answer to the allegation that it was taking support from the SDPI. The CPM also didn't take the allegation of having a 'deal' with the BJP seriously enough.

With so much anti-LDF sentiment building up, things were relatively easy for the UDF. The Congress did have some of its usual last-minute drama during candidate selection, but this time, they were much faster and more decisive than before. They managed to project a united front until the elections were over and had a clear strategy on what campaign issues to focus on. The Congress, leading the UDF, carefully handled potentially damaging allegations like the Wayanad rehabilitation issue. The incredible self-confidence shown by the Leader of the Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, and the energetic campaigning by young crowd-pullers like Shafi Parambil, motivated the entire Congress machinery to stand with the UDF.

UDF's success

The UDF was successful in highlighting local issues like price hikes and increases in fees, electricity bills, and water bills during their local campaigns. It seems a certain 'magic' worked for them this time, allowing them to connect deeply with the people even without a formal cadre system. Their excellent performance in the local body elections gave them a ready-made army of local representatives who campaigned for them.

They managed to create a feeling that the ruling leaders had been disconnected from the public for ten years. The UDF positioned itself as the alternative, stayed ahead on social media trends, and that's what laid the foundation for this UDF wave, which many didn't see coming.

Bengaluru: The Amruthahalli police have arrested two people, including a private college student, for allegedly misbehaving and assaulting police constables. The incident happened when the cops questioned the youths for holding a drinking party in their car, parked right in the middle of a road in the wee hours of the morning.

The arrested individuals are Dev Harsh from Mariyappanapalya and Aryan. The police are now on the lookout for two others, Chand and Mrinal, who fled the scene. The constables who were attacked, Hanumantha Alagundi and Rudrappa, were on patrol duty in Akashvani Layout when the accused behaved badly with them. Officials said that the policemen received treatment for their injuries and have since recovered.

Uniform torn, goondagiri on display

Here's what happened. Around 3 AM on May 1st, near Dasarahalli's Akashvani Layout, four youths were having a drinking session in their car. The group included B.Tech students Harsh, Chand, and Mrinal, along with Aryan, a private company employee. At the same time, Amruthahalli police constables Rudrappa and Hanumantha were on their patrol rounds on that route.

The policemen objected to them drinking in the middle of the road. This angered one of the youths, who started abusing the cops, shouting, 'Karnataka Police Ma*** Chor'. When one of the constables tried to get his lathi from the bike, all four of them grabbed him from behind.

The accused then tore the constable's uniform, punched and kicked the policemen, and fled the scene. Following the incident, an FIR was registered at the Amruthahalli police station based on a complaint filed by the injured constable, Rudrappa. The police eventually tracked down and arrested two of them using the car's registration number. An investigation is underway to find the absconding duo, Chand and Mrinal, police officials confirmed.

Students from rich families

It has come to light that except for Mrinal, the other three accused are from locally well-to-do families. It uses computer vision, smart traffic signals and real-time monitoring to reduce human error and improve airport ops, even during fog or low visibility. The airport recorded over 4.18 crore passengers in 2024-25.

Bengaluru: With growing concerns about flight-related accidents in India and abroad, Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has taken a major tech-savvy step to boost passenger safety and operational security. Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), the operator, has now launched a state-of-the-art ‘Smart Airside Safety System’. This new system is set to take safety in the airport's airside area to a whole new level.

New Safety System in a High-Risk Zone

The 'airside' is the area where planes get ready for takeoff and landing. This zone is extremely sensitive and risky, so every activity here needs precise monitoring. The 'cross service roads', where aircraft and ground vehicles move at the same time, are particularly tricky. Until now, traffic management on these roads was handled manually. Staff used to control the signals by hand, which sometimes led to human errors, causing delays or even dangerous situations.

To tackle these challenges, BIAL has introduced this new AI-based smart safety system. It uses computer vision technology to accurately track and analyse the movement of all vehicles in the airside area. If any vehicle speeds, breaks a rule, or creates a risky situation, the system immediately sends an automatic alert. It also uses intelligent automation to manage traffic signals on its own. This will not only reduce the chances of human error but also make operations much more efficient.

AI Cameras on Watch

Another great feature of this new system is its real-time monitoring capability. Every activity in the airside is digitally recorded and tracked through a central control centre. This will allow for data-based analysis in the future to further improve traffic management. The technology will bring more transparency and accuracy to the airport's internal traffic control.

Additionally, this smart system is designed to work effectively even in foggy weather, low visibility, or at night. It will help reduce risks caused by darkness or bad weather, ensuring a safe distance is maintained between aircraft and vehicles. As a result, it will also help keep flights on schedule, balancing both speed and safety.

According to a BIAL statement, this system is not just a safety measure but also a significant step towards the future of airport management. With this, KIA has taken another leap in adopting global safety standards through cutting-edge technology.

BIAL Serves a Record Number of Passengers

Meanwhile, Bengaluru airport has also set a new record in passenger service. In the financial year 2024–25, BIAL served over 4.18 crore passengers, becoming the first airport in South India to achieve this milestone. As India's third-largest airport, KIA has served more than 35 crore passengers to date.

KIA has also received the prestigious global 'ACI 5-star Airport Rating' for its excellent customer service. For the fourth year in a row, it has been recognised as India's No. 1 airport for handling perishable goods, including fruits and vegetables. By constantly innovating in technology, safety, and passenger experience, Bengaluru airport is transforming into an even smarter and safer aviation hub.

A political billboard in Taiwan’s Kaohsiung city has sparked outrage after local candidate Lee Hung-yi appeared to campaign against Indians using imagery many called racist. The controversy comes amid debates over recruiting Indian migrant workers.

A controversial political billboard in Taiwan has triggered outrage online and raised concerns among Indian-origin residents after a local election candidate appeared to campaign against Indians using imagery many people described as racist and discriminatory.

The billboard was reportedly placed on Shanming Road in Kaohsiung’s Siaogang District and belongs to local council candidate Lee Hung-yi. The poster shows a crossed-out illustration of a brown-skinned man wearing a turban and facial hair, along with what appeared to be an upside-down Indian flag.

Lee Hung-yi, running for city council in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, ran a “no” sign over a man with a turban and an Indian flag. Says he doesn’t like Indian labor.Indians are roaring, but Lee not backing down. No Indians! pic.twitter.com/NVrPo0nfkz

— Jared Taylor (@RealJarTaylor) May 14, 2026

Many social media users and residents interpreted the billboard as a direct message against Indians and migrant workers from India.

The incident has now become part of a wider debate in Taiwan over migrant labour, race, political campaigning and relations with India.

The visuals on the billboard shocked several members of Taiwan’s Indian community. Residents quoted in local reports said they felt uncomfortable, targeted and unwelcome after seeing the campaign material displayed publicly.

Some people described it as one of the most openly anti-Indian political displays they had ever seen in Taiwan.

The issue gained more attention after videos and pictures of the billboard went viral on social media platforms, where users from different countries shared sharply divided opinions.

Indians in Taiwan say racism is rising after a political candidate promised to BAN Indian workers from entering the country. One campaign poster reportedly showed a man in a turban alongside the Indian flag both crossed out with a giant ❌.As Taiwan faces labor shortages… pic.twitter.com/KzgAitqveX

— Sourabh (@vellasrv) May 19, 2026

While many condemned the billboard as racist and harmful, others defended the candidate’s right to oppose immigration policies.

The controversy quickly spread online, leading to thousands of comments and debates. Several users claimed the campaign reflected growing anti-Indian sentiment in parts of East Asia, while others argued it was linked more to local politics and labour concerns.

Some social media users alleged that the candidate was linked to pro-China politics and claimed the billboard was designed to favour Chinese migrants over Indian workers.

The Taiwanese are not particularly fond of Indians. One political candidate in Kaohsiung vows to ban Indians from immigrating. pic.twitter.com/bKrvIoXi0W

— Ian Miles Cheong (@ianmiles) May 18, 2026

Others accused political groups of using fear and stereotypes to win support before local elections.

A number of comments openly mocked Indians or used insulting language, which further increased criticism of the campaign. At the same time, some users defended India and pointed out the close connections between Indians and Taiwanese living abroad, especially in places like the United States.

Other users argued that Taiwan should decide its own immigration policies without outside pressure, while some criticised racism and hate-based political messaging.

The online debate also included comments connecting the issue to wider tensions involving China and Taiwan.

The billboard controversy comes during a larger political debate in Taiwan over plans to recruit workers from India to help solve labour shortages.

In 2024, India and Taiwan signed a labour mobility agreement aimed at helping Taiwanese industries facing worker shortages. The agreement focused on bringing Indian workers into sectors where labour demand remains high.

However, the move has faced resistance from sections of the opposition, especially members of the Kuomintang or KMT.

Some opposition leaders raised concerns that migrant workers could leave contracts illegally or create social and public safety problems.

Certain lawmakers reportedly cited crime statistics from India while arguing against large-scale recruitment of Indian workers. Critics of these arguments say such statements unfairly stereotype an entire nationality and create fear.

Ruling party pushes back against anti-Indian messaging

Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party or DPP strongly criticised messaging seen as targeting Indians.

Party leaders argued that Indian workers would follow the same laws and regulations that apply to all migrant workers in Taiwan.

DPP legislator Rosalia Wu reportedly warned that political leaders should not use populist campaigns to spread racial discrimination or fear against specific communities.

Supporters of the labour agreement also pointed out that Taiwan already employs workers from countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia in large numbers.

Some commentators argued that focusing only on Indian workers while ignoring workers from other nations raises questions about bias and selective targeting.

This is not the first time discussions around Indian workers have caused controversy in Taiwan.

Last year, comments by former labour minister Hsu Ming-chun created diplomatic discomfort after she reportedly suggested recruiting workers from India’s northeast because of “similar skin colour”.

The remarks triggered backlash both online and offline. Taiwan’s foreign ministry later apologised over the controversy.

The latest billboard dispute has once again brought attention to how migrant workers from India are being discussed in Taiwan’s political space.

No official response yet from India

So far, Ministry of External Affairs has not issued any official statement regarding the billboard controversy.

However, the issue has gained significant attention among Indian social media users, with many demanding that political leaders in Taiwan condemn the imagery and prevent racial targeting during election campaigns.

Some users also called for stronger diplomatic engagement between India and Taiwan to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Labour shortages remain a major issue in Taiwan

Taiwan continues to face labour shortages in several industries, especially manufacturing, healthcare and caregiving sectors.

Experts say migrant workers are important for supporting Taiwan’s economy and ageing population.

Supporters of the India-Taiwan labour agreement believe Indian workers can help meet labour demands while also improving economic ties between the two regions.

But critics fear that immigration changes could affect jobs, wages or public services, leading to political opposition.

The growing political fight over migrant workers has now expanded into a broader debate about race, identity and nationalism in Taiwan.

The Samajwadi Party (SP), led by Akhilesh Yadav, has decided not to work with election strategy firm Indian Political Action Committee for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election. This decision marks a major shift in the party’s campaign planning. The move comes after months of discussions between SP and I-PAC, which were never officially announced but were widely known within political circles.

Akhilesh Yadav himself confirmed that the arrangement has been dropped mainly due to lack of funds. However, several other factors also appear to have influenced the decision.

हमारे पास उतना फंड नहीं है, इसलिए I-PAC से करार खत्म हुआ.- अखिलेश यादव pic.twitter.com/02rcGYuAp6

— Ranvijay Singh (@ranvijaylive) May 6, 2026

— The Lallantop (@TheLallantop) May 6, 2026

What I-PAC was expected to do

I-PAC is a political consultancy firm that helps parties with campaign planning, data analysis, messaging and social media outreach. Sources said I-PAC was expected to work mainly in constituencies where SP had narrowly lost the 2022 Assembly election. The idea was to improve the party’s performance in these close seats.

— Dinesh Bohra (@dineshbohrabmr) May 6, 2026

The firm has worked with several major political parties in the past and is known for running detailed election campaigns.

Why SP backed out

Akhilesh Yadav gave a simple explanation when asked about ending the tie-up. He said the party did not have enough money to continue with I-PAC’s services.

In a lighter tone, he even joked with reporters that if the media could provide funds, the party might hire another consultancy.

But sources say the decision was not only about money.

Impact of recent election results

Recent election results in other states played a key role in shaping SP’s thinking.

In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee’s party suffered a major defeat, with the BJP winning a huge majority. The BJP secured more than 200 seats in the 294-member Assembly.

In Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin’s DMK also lost power. It was defeated by actor Vijay’s party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK).

These defeats raised questions within SP about the effectiveness of I-PAC’s strategies, as the firm was believed to have been involved in campaign planning in both states.

Concerns over legal troubles

Another major factor was the legal trouble surrounding I-PAC earlier this year. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches at the firm’s office in Kolkata and at the residence of co-founder Pratik Jain.

The investigation was linked to a money-laundering case connected to an alleged coal smuggling scam.

Later, another co-founder, Vinesh Chandel, was arrested in April. The ED claimed that large amounts of money were moved through illegal channels into a company linked to I-PAC.

According to the agency, funds were routed partly through banking systems and partly through cash to convert black money into white.

Chandel was released on bail last week, but the controversy raised serious concerns.

Effect on SP’s decision

Sources say these developments made SP leaders uncomfortable about continuing any close association with I-PAC.

One key moment came when ED raids were happening at I-PAC's Kolkata office while the firm’s representatives were in Lucknow giving a presentation to SP leaders.

This timing reportedly created unease within the party leadership.

Operational issues during campaigns

Reports also suggest that I-PAC reduced its operations in some states during the final phase of recent elections. Teams were downsized, including in Uttar Pradesh. This may have affected SP’s confidence in the firm’s ability to manage large-scale campaigns.

Feedback from local party workers also played a role. Many felt the party should rely more on its own organisation rather than an external firm.

SP’s new strategy

The Samajwadi Party now plans to depend on its internal network and ground-level workers for the 2027 elections. Leaders believe this approach will help them stay more connected with voters and local issues.

At the same time, SP is not completely avoiding professional help. The party will continue working with another consultancy firm called Showtime, which handles election management and social media work.

This contract was signed around two months ago and will remain in place.

Political stakes in Uttar Pradesh

The 2027 Assembly election is very important for SP and Akhilesh Yadav. The party is seen as the main opposition to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh.

A strong performance in this election could revive SP’s position, while a weak showing may hurt its future prospects.

Akhilesh Yadav has already started attacking the BJP on key issues like unemployment, caste census, law and order, and farmers’ problems.

Wider opposition picture

The decision also comes at a time when several opposition leaders have faced setbacks. Mamata Banerjee lost power in West Bengal. MK Stalin’s DMK was removed in Tamil Nadu. Arvind Kejriwal also lost control of Delhi.

These developments have reduced the number of strong opposition leaders challenging the BJP at the national level.

Akhilesh Yadav's West Bengal visit

Amid these political changes, Akhilesh Yadav is scheduled to visit West Bengal for a meeting with Mamata Banerjee. The meeting is expected to focus on election results and future strategies for opposition unity.

The visit shows that opposition parties are still trying to work together despite recent defeats.

Tensions in West Bengal after election

West Bengal has seen political tension after the BJP’s big win. The party secured over 200 seats, while the Trinamool Congress dropped sharply.

Mamata Banerjee has refused to resign and claimed that her party is the 'moral winner'. She has also accused the Election Commission and BJP of unfair practices.

So far, neither SP nor I-PAC has issued a detailed official statement about ending their association. Akhilesh Yadav has maintained that the decision is mainly due to financial limits.

However, sources suggest a mix of political, legal, and practical reasons behind the move.

(With inputs from agencies)

New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be visiting to Vietnam and South Korea from May 18 in a push to deepen New Delhi’s strategic footprint across the Indo-Pacific.

The visit comes at a moment of quickening momentum on two fronts – a near-finalised supersonic cruise-missile deal with Hanoi, and the launch of a new bilateral defence innovation platform with Seoul.

Vietnam: BrahMos deal at advanced stage

The centrepiece of his Hanoi leg is the prospective sale of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system, jointly developed by India and Russia, which has been in active negotiation for several years. Talks have gathered speed following the Vietnamese president, To Lam’s, visit to New Delhi just days before the minister’s departure. Sources said that the negotiations are “at advanced negotiation stages,” with the prospective contract valued at approximately ₹5,800 crore.

If the deal concluded, Vietnam would become the third country to procure BrahMos, after the Philippines and Indonesia.

The Philippines signed a $375 million agreement in 2022, while Indonesia moved to finalize a deal worth at least $340 million earlier this year.

The BrahMos system, capable of travelling at nearly three times the speed of sound and striking targets up to 300 kilometres away in its standard export configuration, is one of India’s most sought-after defence exports.

For Vietnam – which has long-running territorial disputes with China in the South China Sea – the acquisition would represent a significant upgrade to its coastal-defence capabilities. Beyond missiles, India has offered technical cooperation covering the maintenance, repair, and modernization of Vietnamese military platforms, including Sukhoi Su-30 fighter aircraft and Kilo-class submarines – hardware originally acquired from Russia that India is well-positioned to service.

The offer fits within New Delhi’s broader strategy of converting defence sales into longer-term strategic partnerships.

South Korea: innovation accelerator and expanded co-production

In Seoul, the agenda shifts toward defence industrial collaboration and emerging technologies. The two governments used their summit on April 20, 2026, attended by the prime minister, Narendra Modi, and the South Korean president, Lee Jae Myung, to announce the Korea-India Defence Accelerator, known as KIND-X.

KIND-X is designed to connect defence companies, start-ups, incubators, investors, and universities from both countries, with the aim of co-developing technologies in areas such as unmanned systems, artificial intelligence, and advanced materials.

The initiative draws on the template established by the K9 Vajra self-propelled howitzer, which India and South Korea already co-manufacture under a technology-transfer arrangement, and seeks to replicate that model across a broader range of futuristic military systems.

South Korea has emerged as one of the world’s more aggressive arms exporters in recent years, with its defence industry securing deals worth tens of billions of dollars with Poland, Australia, and several other countries. For India, which is trying to build a robust domestic defence-manufacturing base under its “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) policy, Seoul’s experience in scaling industrial production is a practical asset.

Amul and Mother Dairy have increased milk prices across India from May 14. Amul raised prices by Rs 2/litre, citing higher cattle feed, packaging, fuel and operational expenses. Mother Dairy also revised prices of full cream, toned, cow, buffalo milk

Milk prices are rising again in India. Two major dairy brands, Amul and Mother Dairy, have announced fresh price increases starting May 14. The changes apply to many milk types, including full cream milk, toned milk, cow milk, buffalo milk, and premium variants.

The increase ranges from Rs 1 to Rs 5 depending on the product and pack size. This move is expected to affect household budgets and food costs.

The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which sells products under the Amul brand, has increased milk prices by Rs 2 per litre across India. The new rates are effective from May 14.

In a statement, GCMMF said it has raised the prices of fresh pouch milk by Rs 2 per litre in major variants and packs. The cooperative explained that the decision was taken due to rising operational and production costs.

The price increase is about 2.5 to 3.5 per cent per litre, which the company says is lower than the average food inflation rate.

GCMMF said the cost of production has increased during the year. The main reasons include:

Higher cost of cattle feed

Increased milk packaging film costs

Rising fuel prices

Overall increase in operational expenses

The cooperative also said its member unions have increased the farmers’ milk procurement price by Rs 30 per kg of fat, which is a 3.7 per cent rise compared to May 2025.

Amul added that it follows a policy where almost 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers goes to milk producers. The company said the price revision will help ensure better income for farmers and support milk production.

For a 500 ml pack, the revised prices are:

Slim N variant: Rs 27

Taaza: Rs 30

Cow milk: Rs 31

Gold: Rs 36

For 1 litre packs:

Amul Gold (1 litre): Rs 70 (earlier Rs 68)

Amul Taaza (1 litre): Rs 57 (earlier Rs 55)

Other changes:

Buffalo milk (500 ml): Rs 39 (earlier Rs 38)

Cow milk (500 ml): Rs 30 (earlier Rs 29)

Buffalo milk: Increased by Rs 4 per litre to Rs 80

Other variants such as Slim & Trim and Tea Special milk have also seen price increases across markets.

The last price revision by Amul was on May 1, 2025.

Mother Dairy has also increased prices across multiple stock-keeping units (SKUs).

Under the new structure:

Buffalo milk

1 litre: Increased from Rs 75 to Rs 80

500 ml: Increased from Rs 76 to Rs 80

Full cream milk

1 litre: Increased from Rs 69 to Rs 72

500 ml: Increased from Rs 70 to Rs 72

The company has also revised prices of:

Double-toned milk

Toned milk

Cow milk

Pro Milk variants

These changes apply across different supply channels.

Milk is a daily item in most Indian homes. Any price change directly affects monthly spending. Experts say the increase may add pressure to middle-class budgets.

Since milk is used for tea, coffee, cooking and dairy products, the hike may also affect food prices indirectly.

Both companies say the increase is necessary because of higher costs in farming, transport, packaging and procurement.

Growth of Amul brand

Despite the price rise, the Amul brand has shown strong growth.

Total turnover crossed Rs 1 lakh crore in the 2025-26 financial year.

Turnover increased by 11 per cent.

GCMMF turnover rose by 11.4 per cent to Rs 73,450 crore in the last fiscal year.

GCMMF is described as the world’s largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative. It has:

3.6 million farmers

Collection of 31 million litres of milk every day

Distribution of more than 24 billion packs annually

Sales in 50-plus countries

Products include milk, butter, cheese, ghee, ice cream, and more.

The new milk price hike by Amul and Mother Dairy will affect consumers across India from May 14. The companies say rising costs have made the revision necessary.

While farmers may benefit from higher procurement prices, households may feel the impact in their monthly budgets. Milk remains one of the most important daily essentials in the country.

(With inputs from agencies)
