A strange chocolate robbery in Europe has sparked global interest after more than 12 tonnes of KitKat bars vanished while in transport, causing both alarm from the brand and an outpouring of jokes online.

Nestle, the Swiss food giant, acknowledged that a truck carrying a big shipment of KitKat chocolate bars vanished while its way from central Italy. According to Reuters, the cargo, which comprised around 413,000 bars from a new product line, was intended for Poland but never arrived. The particular area where the truck went missing has not been divulged by the firm, and both the vehicle and its cargo have yet to be located.

What has stuck out in this case is KitKat's response to the unprecedented incident. In a message that instantly went viral, the company leaned into its iconic phrase with a sense of humour.

"We always encouraged people to have a break with KITKAT, but it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tonnes of our chocolate," a business spokesperson said. It noted that, while it could "appreciate the criminals' exceptional taste," cargo theft remains an increasing threat for firms in all industries.

Nestle also revealed that the stolen chocolate bars are not entirely untraceable. Each batch carries a unique code, and anyone attempting to scan these codes would be prompted with instructions to contact the company.

Social Media Can't Keep Calm

As word spread about the chocolate robbery, social media users quickly turned it into a meme fest. One person remarked about the ridiculousness of selling such a large amount of chocolate on the illicit market, saying, "Imagine attempting to sell 12 tonnes of KitKats. Psst, you want a four-finger bar? Do not tell Hershey. The wafer black market is about to explode."

Another joked that they were waiting for a "hostage-style ransom note" in which chunks of KitKat were broken off and submitted as proof. Some people even added a satirical twist, implying that the event may have been a distraction from previous chocolate business issues, despite the lack of evidence.

Comparisons are being made to the deadly Normandy invasion.

Tensions between the United States and Iran have sharply increased after comments by Donald Trump about possibly targeting Kharg Island. Trump suggested that the US could take control of the island, though he also admitted it would need a long-term military presence. Kharg Island is a small Iranian island in the Persian Gulf, but its importance is huge. It is the main hub for Iran’s oil exports. Any attack or disruption here could affect global oil supplies and push fuel prices higher across the world.

NEW President Trump told the Financial Times he wants to “take the oil in Iran” and is considering seizing Kharg Island.“To be honest with you, my favourite thing is to take the oil in Iran, but some stupid people back in the U.S. say: ‘why are you doing that?’ But they’re…

— Open Source Intel (@Osint613) March 30, 2026

Experts say the situation is serious and should not be seen as just political talk. Reports suggest that thousands of US Marines may already be positioned in the region, raising fears that a military operation could be under consideration.

Why Kharg Island is so important

Kharg Island is only about 8 km long and 4-5 km wide. But it plays a key role in Iran’s economy. Around 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports pass through this island. It also has a storage capacity of about 30 million barrels, with millions of barrels already stored there.

The island is located close to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil routes. A large share of global oil shipments passes through this narrow waterway. This makes Kharg Island not just important for Iran, but for the entire global economy.

If the island is attacked or blocked, it could disrupt oil supply chains and lead to sudden price rises. This is why global markets closely watch any developments in this region.

A silence before a possible storm

The waters of the Persian Gulf may look calm, but experts say the situation is tense. The big question now is whether the US is preparing for a risky military move. Some analysts are comparing the situation to historic battles where sea-based attacks led to heavy losses.

One such comparison being discussed is the famous D-Day landing during World War II.

The Normandy lesson: a costly victory

On 6 June 1944, Allied forces launched a massive sea invasion at Normandy in France during World War II. The goal was to defeat Nazi Germany led by Adolf Hitler.

Thousands of ships carried soldiers across the English Channel. But as soon as troops landed on the beaches, they faced heavy gunfire from German forces hiding in bunkers and on high ground.

Many soldiers were killed before they even reached safety. The sea turned red with blood. Although the Allies eventually won, the cost was very high, with heavy casualties.

Experts warn that a similar situation could happen if forces attempt to land on Kharg Island.

Geography that favours defence

Kharg Island’s natural structure makes it difficult to attack. The surrounding waters are shallow, but the island itself rises into hilly terrain. This gives defenders a strong advantage.

Iran has reportedly strengthened this advantage by building bunkers inside hills and preparing defensive positions over many years. These bunkers are designed to survive air strikes.

This means that even if the US carries out bombing first, a ground attack would still face strong resistance.

The risks for US Marines

Military experts say any attempt by US Marines to land on Kharg Island would be extremely risky. To reach the island, ships would have to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has strong military presence.

Iran could use drones, missiles, and naval mines to target incoming ships. The exact number of mines or drones in the area is unknown, adding to the uncertainty.

Once near the island, Marines would face attacks not only from visible forces but also from hidden positions. Snipers, guided missiles, and drone swarms could make it very difficult for troops to move safely.

Experts say this could turn into a “trap” situation, where attackers are surrounded and face heavy losses.

IRGC’s strong defence network

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has spent years building a strong defence system around Kharg Island. This includes underground bunkers, anti-ship missiles, and advanced drones.

These drones can attack in groups and are difficult to detect. Anti-ship missiles can target large naval vessels, making them vulnerable if they come close.

Because of the narrow waters in the region, US ships may not have enough space to manoeuvre easily. This could make them easier targets.

A complex challenge beyond combat

The situation is not only about military strategy. Thousands of workers are present on Kharg Island, especially in oil facilities. Any attack would put their lives at risk.

US forces would also need to secure a wide area around the island, possibly up to 100 miles. This would require a large and sustained operation.

There is also no guarantee that capturing the island would force Iran to change its position. Iran could continue attacks from nearby coastal areas using missiles.

This raises a key question: would the risks outweigh the gains?

Fears of a wider conflict

Experts warn that any attack on Kharg Island could lead to a much larger war. Iran could respond by targeting oil facilities in nearby countries or by blocking the Strait of Hormuz.

Such actions could disrupt global oil supply and impact economies worldwide. Fuel prices could rise sharply, affecting daily life in many countries.

There are also concerns that the conflict could spread beyond the region, involving more countries.

Political strategy or dangerous gamble?

Donald Trump is known for his 'maximum pressure' approach towards Iran. His recent statements suggest he wants to show strength.

However, critics argue that a ground attack on Iran could be a serious mistake. Some compare it to 'disturbing a beehive', where the reaction could be strong and unpredictable.

There are also questions about long-term goals. Unlike World War II, where the enemy was clearly defined, the objectives in a potential Iran conflict are less clear.

Iran’s leadership under Ali Khamenei has shown resilience in the past. This makes it uncertain whether military pressure alone would achieve desired results.

Could history repeat itself?

History shows that attacking well-defended coastal areas is one of the hardest military operations. Even powerful armies can suffer heavy losses.

The example of Normandy shows that victory can come at a very high human cost. In the case of Kharg Island, the risks may be even greater due to modern weapons like drones and guided missiles.

Experts fear that thousands of soldiers could be at risk if such an operation goes ahead.

At present, there is no confirmed decision about a military strike. However, the situation remains tense, and global attention is focused on the Persian Gulf.

Kharg Island has become a symbol of both economic power and military risk. What happens next could shape not only the future of US-Iran relations but also global energy markets.

Indian travellers passing through France now have one less step to worry about. France has removed the airport transit visa requirement for Indian nationals, making international travel smoother. The decision was confirmed by the Embassy of France in India in an official statement.

What the new rule says

From 10 April 2026, Indian citizens with an ordinary passport do not need an airport transit visa when passing through French airports.

This applies only if travellers stay inside the international transit zone and do not enter French territory. He had said steps would be taken to make travel easier for Indian nationals.

To make this happen, France updated its earlier visa rules. A decree changed the older law from May 2010, which dealt with entry and visa requirements for foreigners.

This update was officially published in France’s legal record, known as the Journal Officiel, on 9 April 2026. The new rule came into effect the next day.

Who benefits from this rule

The visa waiver is for Indian travellers who are simply transiting through France.

It helps those flying to other countries, such as the US, Canada, or European nations, with a stop in France. As long as they remain in the airport’s international zone, no transit visa is needed.

However, if a traveller wants to leave the airport or enter France, normal visa rules will still apply.

Also Read: UFO Expert David Wilcock's 'Not Suicidal' Post Goes Viral After Death Shock

A step towards easier travel

This decision is seen as a positive move in improving travel between India and France.

It makes France a more convenient transit hub for Indian passengers. Travellers can now plan routes with fewer visa worries, saving both time and effort.

The change also shows stronger ties between the two countries and a shared focus on easier movement for people.

By Dr Aparaajita Pandey

It is hard to describe the reported strike by the Iranian missile in the conventional sense of a conflict, it is however indicative of the shift in the geographical connotations of this conflict. This possible spill over from West Asia t the Indo – Pacific needs to be studied.

Diego Garcia is a coral atoll a little south of the Maldives in the central Indian Ocean. While the geographical description makes it sound like an idyllic vacation paradise, it is important to note that this island acts as a joint military base for the US and the UK. Its geographical position bestows it with strategic importance.

As the missile hit this tropical paradise, it became clear that Iran was signalling something significant; it underlined the permeability of the US’ defence and security infrastructure, that was previously assumed to be insulated because of it. However, at the moment this action alone is not symbolic of a new front opening in the war rather it signals towards an addition of geographical zones to the ongoing conflict. Instead of an attempt at some decisive confrontation, at the moment Iran is more interested in spreading the US to this, by making such controlled disruptions.

Iran is using a multi-approach; while the traditional armed conflict lingers on, at first the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz was used to create both a panic in the international market and also an understanding as to what countries stood to lose in case this conflict was to become protracted and the Strait were to close for long. Now, as the nation states dependent on the Strait for their energy needs are scrambling for supplies, and trying to find alternative routes to meet their energy needs, Iran has begun to allow maritime passage at a premium, thereby making this time of extreme dread and anxiety possibly quite profitable for themselves. This also plays well with shipping companies worldwide as an assurance from Iran of safe passage for a premium keeps the additional risk cover by shipping insurance firms relatively low.

Iran’s has plucked a page out of the play book of empires that have historically weaponised their geography as a leverage to attain monetary or strategic benefit. Much like the corsair economies of the Mediterranean or even an ode to the use of chokepoints during the Cold War; Iran has found a way of turning global insecurity into a steady revenue stream. Only now these tactics are even more effective as in this globalised era where all sectors are intrinsically related with each other; the ramifications of even the slightest of disruptions are multi-fold.

Missile strike on Diego Garcia

The strike on Diego Garcia must therefore be read alongside this maritime strategy. It is a display that Iran can cause destruction and mayhem in not just proximate adversaries, but the structural mainstay of US power projection. Critically, it accomplishes this without crossing the threshold into full-scale war. This is escalation designed to compel, not to explode.

The Indian Ocean region or the Indo - Pacific is now turning into an extended battlespace, where signalling, supply chains, and strategic infrastructure intersect. While the conflict remains concentrated in West Asia, its effects are however, no longer geographically contained.

For India, this is a structural challenge. As a state deeply contingent on maritime energy flows, it is vulnerable to precisely this kind of calibrated instability that Iran is manufacturing. Nevertheless, India is unlikely to abandon its longstanding strategic posture in the Indo - Pacific.

The United States on the other hand, faces a more profound dilemma. Even as the conflict’s spills over to the Indo-Pacific, the US along with NATO has been clear in their stance that it is not a net security provider in the region. They have recently emphasised the transatlantic nature of NATO and with the deepening of the fissure between the US and NATO, it is becoming hard to estimate as to what their reaction would be. This question is complicated enough without the addition of another power in the mix, but the spill over into the Indo – Pacific brings with it, China and challenges posed by it to western supremacy. A challenge that is a little too vast to be dealt with by a NATO style security architecture.

The conundrum for the US has become unavoidable, a disengagement from West Asia comes with obvious risks of escalation from Iran; and yet a continued engagement puts strain on its presence in the Indo – Pacific, specifically in terms of Taiwan. The situation begs for an invocation of the classic realist theory. Power balancing, deterrence, and actions centred around sphere- of – influence, are all reminiscent of the classical theory, however, the manipulation of energy flows, creation and monetisation of risks, and leveraging trade routes have added an economic element to the conventional military focus of the conflict.

Iran’s strategy captures this leap from military to economics. By neither escalating definitively nor de-escalating significantly, it engages a grey zone that confounds conventional reactions. It is not at the moment pursuing victory in the traditional sense; it is seeking influence within a structure that amplifies disruption. The economic outcomes are already detectable. Energy markets are tightening, shipping costs are increasing, and insurance premiums across key maritime routes are snowballing. Over time, this will enforce a general shift toward economic securitisation. Defence spending, particularly in maritime domains, is likely to follow.

The deeper consequence, however, is strategic. The strike on Diego Garcia shows a world in which insecurity is widespread, but security guarantees are limited. Conflicts can project power across regions, whereas alliances endure geographically constrains. The Indo-Pacific is less likely to be a conventional theatre of this conflict. However, it will progressively act as its strategic echo; absorbing shocks, recalibrating alignments, and exposing the limits of existing security frameworks.

Author is a Professor at Amity Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies, Amity University NOIDA.

(Disclaimer: The opinions expressed are solely those of the author and do not reflect the views or stance of the organization.

Global markets turned volatile as oil prices surged and stocks fell amid uncertainty over US-Iran talks. Crude crossed $100/barrel as tensions rose and Strait of Hormuz faced disruption. Mixed signals from both sides have shaken investor confidence.

Oil prices rose sharply on Thursday as hopes for a peace deal between the United States and Iran began to fade. Investors reacted quickly after Iran rejected a US proposal aimed at ending the ongoing conflict, which has now lasted for nearly four weeks.

Crude prices climbed by almost four percent during the day. Brent crude moved above $101 per barrel, while US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) traded close to $94. The sudden rise reflects growing concern about global oil supply as tensions continue.

Markets had earlier shown signs of calm after Donald Trump said that planned strikes on Iran’s energy facilities would be delayed. He also claimed that peace talks were underway. However, the situation quickly changed after Iran denied active negotiations.

Stocks fall across global markets

As oil prices rose, stock markets around the world moved in the opposite direction. Major indices in the United States, Europe and Asia all recorded losses.

Wall Street opened lower, with the Dow Jones falling by around 0.5 percent. The S&P 500 dropped 0.8 percent, while the Nasdaq fell by more than one percent.

In Europe, London’s FTSE 100 declined by 1.3 percent. Germany’s DAX and France’s CAC 40 also recorded losses. Asian markets followed the same trend, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index dropping nearly two percent and China’s Shanghai Composite falling over one percent.

Experts say this pattern is common. When oil prices rise sharply, it increases costs for businesses and reduces profits, leading to a fall in stock prices.

A major concern for markets is the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. This narrow waterway is one of the most important oil routes in the world.

Around 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas passes through it during normal times. However, the ongoing conflict has led to severe disruptions. Reports suggest that the route is almost closed, with Iran allowing only selected ships to pass.

This has raised fears of supply shortages. Any major disruption in this route can push oil prices even higher and affect global trade.

The situation has become more confusing due to mixed messages from both sides. The US is believed to have offered a 15-point peace plan to Iran. At the same time, Iran has reportedly proposed its own set of conditions.

Despite these developments, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has clearly stated that the country does not plan to negotiate directly with the US government.

On the other hand, Pakistan has confirmed that it is helping with indirect talks. Ishaq Dar said that messages are being exchanged through Islamabad. Other countries like Turkey and Egypt are also said to be supporting the process.

This unclear situation has made investors nervous, as there is no clear sign of when or how the conflict might end.

Adding to the tension, Donald Trump issued a strong warning to Iran. He urged the country to take talks seriously and warned of serious consequences if no agreement is reached.

In a social media post, Trump said that the situation could reach a point of “no turning back”. He also claimed that Iran had already suffered major military losses.

Such statements have raised concerns that the conflict could become even more intense, especially if diplomacy fails.

The conflict on the ground has also continued without pause. Israel reported that it had carried out strikes targeting Iranian military positions and infrastructure.

One of the major developments was the killing of a senior Iranian naval commander, Alireza Tangsiri. Israel claimed he was responsible for actions in the Strait of Hormuz during the conflict.

Air strikes were reported in several Iranian cities, including Isfahan, Shiraz and Tabriz. Some attacks also reached areas closer to the Afghan border, showing how widely the conflict has spread.

In response, Iran continued its missile and drone attacks on Israel. Falling debris from intercepted missiles reportedly injured several people.

Conflict spreads across the region

The violence is no longer limited to Iran and Israel. Other parts of the Gulf region have also been affected.

In the United Arab Emirates, two people were killed by debris from a missile intercepted near Abu Dhabi. Drone attacks were also reported in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Iran has accused some Gulf countries of supporting US military actions. In response, it has targeted energy sites and other important locations in the region.

These developments have increased fears that the conflict could turn into a wider regional war.

Rising oil prices and ongoing conflict are now affecting the global economy. Higher energy costs can lead to increased prices for goods and services, adding to inflation.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has already lowered its growth forecast for the eurozone. It also warned that inflation could rise further in 2026 due to expensive energy.

Germany, Europe’s largest economy, has also shown signs of weakness. A recent survey found that consumer confidence is falling as people worry about rising costs and economic uncertainty.

Markets react to uncertainty

Financial experts say the current situation is highly unstable. Analysts note that even small changes in news or political statements can quickly move markets.

Higher oil prices have also led to a rise in government bond yields. This means borrowing costs are increasing, which can slow down economic growth.

Experts believe that Iran may continue the conflict to maintain pressure through energy prices. Controlling supply routes gives it an advantage in negotiations.

Global leaders prepare for talks

Efforts are being made to manage the crisis. France, which currently holds the G7 Presidency, is set to host a major meeting next week.

Finance ministers, energy officials and central bank leaders from the G7 countries will gather to discuss the situation. They are expected to focus on stabilising energy markets and reducing economic risks.

Meanwhile, the World Trade Organization has warned that global trade is facing one of its worst disruptions in decades due to ongoing conflicts and rising tensions.

(With inputs from agencies)

Oil prices rose and global stocks fell over Middle East war fears. Despite US delaying action against Iran, uncertainty remains high, especially with tensions in Strait of Hormuz. Markets reacted negatively as conflict continues, affecting trade.

Global markets showed fresh signs of stress on Friday as oil prices climbed and stock markets fell. The shift came as early optimism over US President Donald Trump delaying action against Iran faded quickly.

Brent crude rose by 2.3 percent to $104.17 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate gained 2.6 percent to reach $97.08. At the same time, major stock markets in the United States and Europe slipped into the red.

Delay in action fails to calm markets

Earlier this week, markets had reacted positively when President Trump delayed a deadline linked to possible strikes on Iran’s energy assets. That move had briefly lowered oil prices and lifted stocks.

However, the mood changed again after the deadline was pushed further to April 6, with little sign of progress. Investors now believe the conflict may continue for a longer time.

Experts say traders are no longer reacting strongly to daily announcements from Washington, as uncertainty remains high.

A key concern for global markets is the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil routes. Iran continues to hold control over the area, and shipping has been affected.

Analysts say the route is effectively closed for some vessels, raising fears about oil supply disruptions.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have also warned that ships linked to its “enemies” would not be allowed to pass through the strait. They confirmed turning back three vessels trying to use the route.

Stock markets decline worldwide

The uncertainty hit stock markets across regions. In the United States, the Dow Jones fell 0.9 percent, the S&P 500 dropped 0.8 percent, and the Nasdaq declined 1.0 percent.

European markets also struggled. London’s FTSE 100 was down 0.4 percent, Paris’s CAC 40 fell 0.7 percent, and Frankfurt’s DAX dropped 1.5 percent.

In Asia, Tokyo’s Nikkei closed 0.4 percent lower. However, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 0.4 percent and Shanghai’s Composite index gained 0.6 percent.

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East shows no signs of easing. Iran has continued attacks across the region, while the United States and Israel have carried out airstrikes.

Reports said US-Israeli strikes hit two major steel plants in Iran, including facilities in Khuzestan and Isfahan.

Iran has also warned that buildings housing US troops could become targets.

Humanitarian crisis grows in Lebanon

The war is also causing a major humanitarian crisis. The UN refugee agency said Lebanon is facing a serious situation, with more than one million people forced to leave their homes since early March.

Officials warned that the situation could soon turn into a full-scale catastrophe if conditions worsen.

Kuwait confirmed that its main commercial port, Shuwaikh, was damaged in a drone attack. While there were no casualties, the attack caused material damage.

There were also reports that US and Israeli strikes have damaged at least 120 museums and cultural sites in Iran since the war began.

Diplomatic moves and global reactions

There are signs of possible diplomatic efforts. Reports suggest the United States and Iran may hold direct talks soon, possibly in Pakistan.

At the same time, G7 countries have asked for clarity on US plans regarding Iran. The UK has called for a quick solution to restore stability in the region.

Germany’s foreign minister also said Russia may be hoping the conflict diverts attention from the war in Ukraine.

The rise in oil prices is putting pressure on economies worldwide. Higher energy costs are increasing inflation and affecting daily life.

Several countries have taken steps to manage the situation. Vietnam has cut fuel taxes, India has reduced fuel costs, and Japan is considering easing rules on coal power use.

Spain, Poland and South Korea have also announced support plans, including fuel tax reductions.

China adds to global tension

Adding to market worries, China has launched an investigation into US trade practices. This comes after Washington began probing Chinese exports earlier this month.

This new tension between two major economies has further increased uncertainty in global markets.

In other developments, Ukraine and Saudi Arabia signed a new air defence agreement during a recent visit by Ukraine’s president.

Meanwhile, Iran has warned civilians to stay away from areas near US forces, raising fears of further escalation.

Outlook remains uncertain

Analysts say market sentiment is likely to stay negative as long as the Strait of Hormuz remains unsafe and the war continues.

With no clear peace plan and ongoing attacks, both investors and governments are preparing for a longer period of instability.

Oil prices and the dollar jumped Thursday while most equity markets slid as the United States and Iran appeared no closer to resuming peace talks. Amid an extended but seemingly fragile ceasefire, Iran vowed it would not reopen the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of global oil is shipped, as long as the United States blocks its ports.

Stocks are down "as risk aversion builds off the back of yet another damaging phase of this crisis", said Joshua Mahony, chief market analyst at Scope Markets.

"While previous market moves were driven by escalation and de-escalation of the conflict, we are now heading towards a slow grind higher for energy prices as the prospect of a drawn-out stalemate comes into play," he added.

The benchmark international oil contract, Brent North Sea crude, was holding above $100 a barrel, threatening widespread inflation that could dent economies around the globe.

European stock markets mostly fell in midday deals after losses across Asia. But Paris was slightly in the green as the share price of French cosmetics heavyweight L'Oreal surged after posting first-quarter earnings.

L'Oreal's shares jumped more than eight percent after the company said sales rose 3.6 percent in the quarter, boosted by growth in professional and dermatological products.

Analysts say healthy company results overall and a resumption of bullish artificial intelligence trades have helped to support equities despite the uncertainties sparked by the war against Iran.

Almost 80 percent of the companies in the S&P 500 index that have reported first-quarter earnings have surpassed analyst estimates, according to Bloomberg.

Tesla reported Wednesday first-quarter profits that topped expectations as it confirmed plans for huge investments in autonomous transport, humanoid robotics and AI.

Elon Musk's electric vehicle company reported profits of $477 million, up 17 percent from a year earlier, while revenues jumped 16 percent to $22.4 billion.

In Asia, Seoul reached a record high Thursday thanks to a new rally in the tech sector that has been the backbone of a surge in the Kospi index this year.

In the eurozone, business activity contracted in April for the first time in 16 months as the war in the Middle East drove up energy prices and disrupted global supply chains, a closely watched survey showed Thursday.

The Flash Eurozone purchasing managers' index (PMI) published by S&P Global, a gauge of the overall health of the economy, registered a figure of 48.6 for April, down from 50.7 in March.

A reading above 50 indicates growth, while a figure below 50 shows contraction.

Key figures at 1045 GMT

Brent North Sea Crude: UP 1.7 percent at $103.61 a barrel

West Texas Intermediate: UP 1.8 percent at $94.59 a barrel

London - FTSE 100: DOWN 0.8 percent at 10,388.78 points

Paris - CAC 40: UP 0.1 percent at 8,162.78

Frankfurt - DAX: DOWN 0.5 percent at 24,084.13

Tokyo - Nikkei 225: DOWN 0.8 percent at 59,140.23 (close)

Hong Kong - Hang Seng Index: DOWN 1.0 percent at 25,915.20

Shanghai - Composite: DOWN 0.3 percent at 4,093.25 (close)

Euro/dollar: DOWN at $1.1683 from $1.1709 on Wednesday

Pound/dollar: DOWN at $1.3488 from $1.3506

Dollar/yen: UP at 159.75 yen from 159.49 yen

Euro/pound: DOWN at 86.62 pence from 86.70 pence

Oil prices fell slightly after some tankers crossed Strait of Hormuz, offering brief relief amid the ongoing Middle East war. However, tensions remain high as Israel strikes Iran and Iran responds with attacks. The conflict has disrupted global oil supply, raised fuel costs and forced countries to find new routes. Talks of a ceasefire continue.

Oil prices showed a small drop on Monday, giving slight relief to global markets. This came as some oil tankers managed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy supply. The main Brent oil price fell by 0.8 percent to $108.20 per barrel. The US benchmark, West Texas Intermediate, dropped 1.4 percent to $110.01. Experts said this small fall does not mean the crisis is over. It only shows that some movement of oil has restarted, even though the situation remains tense.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important shipping routes in the world. A large share of global oil passes through this narrow waterway. Since the war began on February 28, Iran has mostly blocked the strait. This caused oil and gas prices to jump sharply from around $60 per barrel before the conflict.

Because of this, countries across the world are facing rising costs and supply worries.

Some ships manage to pass

There are signs of slight improvement. Turkey confirmed that a third Turkish-owned oil tanker safely crossed the strait. The ship, named Ocean Thunder, was carrying oil from Iraq to Malaysia. It had loaded crude oil from Basra in Iraq.

Two other ships also passed through safely over the weekend.

A Japanese shipping company, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, said an Indian-flagged LPG tanker owned by its unit also crossed the strait safely. These movements gave some hope to markets, even though normal traffic has not returned.

War continues to escalate

Despite these signs, the war situation remains serious. Israel carried out strikes on Iran’s largest petrochemical complex in Assaluyeh. This site is very important, as it produces about half of Iran’s petrochemical output.

At the same time, Iran launched drone and missile attacks on Israel, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. A senior commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards was also killed in strikes.

The conflict continues to grow, with both sides attacking each other.

Strong warnings and threats

The situation became more tense after strong words from US President Donald Trump. He warned Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face attacks on civilian infrastructure.

Iran responded by saying that even stronger attacks would follow if such actions were taken. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also warned that conditions in the strait will never return to normal, especially for the US and Israel.

These statements show how serious and dangerous the situation has become.

Talks of a possible ceasefire

Amid rising tensions, there are also signs of possible talks. Reports say that a 45-day ceasefire plan is being discussed. Countries like Pakistan, Egypt and Turkey are said to be helping with these efforts.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister confirmed that discussions are taking place with several governments. However, Iran has denied that it is in direct talks with the US or Israel.

This means peace is still uncertain.

Global economic impact

The war is not only affecting the region but also the entire world economy. Oil supply disruptions have caused problems in many sectors, especially aviation.

Indonesia has already increased fuel charges and allowed airlines to raise ticket prices. Air Asia X has also raised fares by up to 40 percent.

Higher fuel costs are making travel more expensive for people.

Countries look for new routes

To avoid risks in the Strait of Hormuz, some countries are changing their oil supply routes. South Korea plans to send ships to Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea port of Yanbu to collect oil.

Taiwan is also planning to use the same route. These changes show how serious the disruption has become.

Rising costs hit nations

Countries that depend heavily on imported oil are feeling the pressure. Sri Lanka has increased cooking gas prices sharply due to rising global costs. The country has warned that a long war could damage its economy further.

Many nations are now worried about inflation and slower economic growth.

Stock markets show mixed reaction

Stock markets in Asia showed mixed trends. Tokyo and Seoul markets closed higher, rising by 0.6 percent and 1.4 percent.

Singapore also saw small gains, while Jakarta slipped slightly. Many markets in Europe and Asia were closed due to holidays, which kept trading activity low.

Daily life amid conflict

Even as tensions rise, life continues in many places.

In Tehran, some people were seen enjoying normal activities like flying kites and spending time in parks. However, attacks have also hit residential areas in different countries.

In Israel, a missile strike killed four people in a residential building in Haifa. In Kuwait and the UAE, attacks caused injuries and damage.

Jordan has even started plans to compensate people whose homes were damaged by falling debris.

Wider regional impact

The conflict has also spread to other areas. In Lebanon, the group Hezbollah has been involved in attacks against Israel.

Israel has responded with strikes and ground action in parts of southern Lebanon. Smoke was seen rising over parts of Beirut after an Israeli strike. This shows how the conflict is spreading beyond just two countries.

The situation remains uncertain. Oil prices may continue to change depending on how the conflict develops. If more ships pass through the Strait of Hormuz, markets may stabilise. But if fighting increases, prices could rise again sharply.

Experts say the world is watching closely, as this conflict affects energy, trade and daily life across countries.

(With inputs from agencies)

Experts say rising tensions and lack of consensus among member countries are weakening WTO.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has ended its 14th ministerial conference in Yaounde without reaching key agreements, raising fresh concerns about the future of global trade. The high-level meeting, which was expected to bring progress on important issues, instead ended in confusion and delay. Talks stretched beyond the planned closing time on Sunday and finally wrapped up in the early hours of Monday with no major results.

Key issues remain unresolved

The biggest disappointment was the failure to reach agreements on agriculture and reforms within the WTO. These are areas that many member countries consider urgent.

Another major setback was the expiry of a long-standing rule that had allowed digital goods to move across borders without customs duties. This rule, in place since 1998, covered items like e-books, music and online services.

Its expiry now creates uncertainty for global digital trade.

Meeting marked by confusion and delays

Observers described the meeting as chaotic. The NGO network “Our World Is Not For Sale” said the talks ended in “chaos and confusion”. Delegates present at the venue in Yaounde also expressed frustration. Many were confused by repeated delays and last-minute changes in meeting schedules.

Even countries not directly involved in key negotiations found it difficult to follow the progress of discussions.

WTO faces growing challenges

Experts say the outcome reflects deeper problems within the WTO. The organisation works on a rule that requires all decisions to be agreed upon by every member country.

While this system ensures fairness, it also makes it very hard to reach decisions, especially when countries have different interests.

The WTO is also dealing with a weakened dispute settlement system and rising tensions between major economies.

Experts warn of ‘harsh reality’

Several experts have pointed out that the lack of agreement shows a bigger issue — the world is moving away from unified global trade rules. Laurence Boisson de Chazournes, an international economic law expert, said the consensus system is being misused.

Former WTO official Hamid Mamdouh said the situation shows that member countries no longer share the same goals. He added that it may be better to have no agreement than a weak one that hides the real problems.

He described the situation as a “harsh reality” for the global trading system.

Differences over digital trade

One of the most debated issues was the e-commerce moratorium. This rule had stopped countries from charging taxes on digital goods.

Developed countries, including the United States, wanted the rule to continue permanently. However, many developing countries, including India, opposed this idea.

They fear losing important tax revenue if digital goods remain duty-free.

At one point, the United States and India seemed close to a compromise to extend the rule for five years. But the deal collapsed when Brazil objected at the last moment.

Brazil said it was unhappy with the lack of progress on agriculture and blocked the agreement.

Tensions between major powers

The meeting also showed clear tensions between major global powers. Observers criticised the United States for taking a strict position and not showing enough willingness to compromise.

At the same time, countries like China continued to push their interests more quietly.

Experts said many smaller countries were left trying to protect their own interests in this complex situation.

Routine work continues despite setback

Despite the failed talks, the WTO continues to function in some areas. It still monitors trade and ensures that existing agreements are followed.

More than 70 percent of global trade still takes place under WTO rules.

However, experts warn that without strong agreements, the organisation’s role could weaken over time.

No return to old system

The outcome of the Yaounde meeting has made one thing clear — global trade is changing. Experts say there is no going back to the old system where countries worked together easily.

Instead, the world is moving towards a more divided trade environment, where countries focus more on their own interests.

The WTO now faces the challenge of adapting to this new reality if it wants to remain relevant.

(With AFP inputs)

European stocks fell Monday as oil prices surged over fears hostilities could resume in the weeks-long Middle East war, after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz following its brief reopening.

Investors were on edge approaching the end of the US-Iran ceasefire, with Iran insisting it has no plan to attend a new round of negotiations with the United States.

"The market mood is very different at the start of the week compared to Friday," said Kathleen Brooks, research director at trading group XTB.

Crude had plunged Friday after the Islamic republic said it would again allow ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas usually passes.

But world oil prices bounced on Monday as Iran closed the waterway and said the US blockade and seizure of an Iranian cargo ship breached the two-week ceasefire.

In Europe, Paris and Frankfurt stock markets shed more than one percent in midday deals, while London was down 0.8 percent.

That came after gains for Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

"Asian shares rebounded as they were in catch-up mode, having missed the rally seen in the US and Europe on Friday," said AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould.

"European indices presented a truer picture of the market mood, with investor wariness and weariness amid the continuing tensions in the Middle East," he added.

The blockade of Iranian ports has been a significant sticking point in negotiations between the two countries, who have both traded accusations of ceasefire violations.

The Fars and Tasnim news agencies had earlier cited anonymous sources as saying "the overall atmosphere cannot be assessed as very positive", adding that lifting the US blockade was a precondition for negotiations.

There has so far been only one negotiating session, held in Islamabad on April 11 that ended inconclusively, although groundwork for fresh talks continued afterwards.

"We're offering a very fair and reasonable DEAL, and I hope they take it," Trump said in a social media post Sunday, while also renewing his threats against Iran's infrastructure if a deal is not made.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned that any attempt to pass through the strait without permission "will be considered cooperation with the enemy, and the offending vessel will be targeted".

Chris Weston at Pepperstone said traders were assessing "whether the ceasefire can be salvaged through this week’s diplomatic talks, with recalibration on the probability of military escalation".

"Without a comprehensive agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme, the ceasefire remained fragile."

Key figures around 1100 GMT

West Texas Intermediate: UP 6.0 percent at $87.51 a barrel

Brent North Sea Crude: UP 5.0 percent at $94.88 a barrel

London - FTSE 100: DOWN 0.8 percent at 10,583.30 points

Paris - CAC 40: DOWN 1.2 percent at 8,322.53

Frankfurt - DAX: DOWN 1.5 percent at 24,341.13

Tokyo - Nikkei 225: UP 0.6 percent at 58,824.89 (close)

Hong Kong - Hang Seng Index: UP 0.8 percent at 26,361.07 (close)

Shanghai - Composite: UP 0.8 percent at 4,082.13 (close)

New York - Dow Jones: UP 1.8 percent at 49,447.43 (close)

Euro/dollar: DOWN at $1.1770 from $1.1776 on Friday

Pound/dollar: DOWN at $1.3517 from $1.3530

Dollar/yen: UP at 158.95 yen from 158.49 yen

Euro/pound: UP at 87.08 pence from 87.02 pence

(Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by Asianet Newsable English staff and is published from a syndicated feed)

King Charles III arrives in Washington for a four-day state visit at a moment that feels anything but routine. What should have been a symbolic exercise in renewing the so-called “special relationship” has instead become a delicate balancing act—set against political unpredictability, security concerns, and lingering royal controversies.

With the 250th anniversary of American independence as the backdrop, the British monarch has been tasked with “reaffirming and renewing” ties with the United States. But the circumstances surrounding the visit have turned it into one of the most complex diplomatic missions of his reign.

A visit with an unusually high degree of difficulty

Historians are not understating the stakes. Contemporary political historian Anthony Seldon described the April 27–30 visit as “obviously beyond tricky,” noting it carries a “degree of difficulty” rarely seen in modern statecraft.

He compared it to historic moments of strain in transatlantic relations—between Lyndon B Johnson and Harold Wilson, Richard Nixon and Edward Heath, and even Dwight Eisenhower and Anthony Eden during the fallout of the Suez Crisis.

“But this is different,” Seldon suggested, largely because of the unpredictability of Donald Trump. “Because you are dealing with somebody who is so unpredictable,” he was quoted as saying in The Guardian report.

Yet Seldon also pointed to a curious advantage: Charles may be one of the few figures Trump is unlikely to antagonise openly. That, he argued, could give the monarch some room to manoeuvre. This is, in Seldon’s words, “the most important visit of the king’s life”—one where he could either “be very cautious and safe” or subtly remind Americans of the principles on which their nation was founded.

Security concerns sharpen after Washington shooting

The visit unfolds just days after a shooting disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, forcing the evacuation of top officials, including Trump.

UK officials insist that security is being taken “very seriously.” Treasury minister Darren Jones confirmed that “appropriate security” measures are in place and that discussions are ongoing between British and American teams.

“There were already extensive discussions taking place, which will continue over the coming days,” he said, underlining the fluid nature of the planning.

Behind the scenes, Buckingham Palace is in constant coordination with US authorities, assessing whether the weekend’s events require further adjustments to what was already a tightly controlled visit.

A speech that could define the visit

At the heart of the trip lies a moment that could shape its legacy: King Charles III's address to a joint session of Congress.

The speech will be televised globally, and expectations are high. Buckingham Palace has indicated that the King will “recognise the challenges that our countries face.” But striking the right tone will be crucial—especially given Trump’s reputation for taking offence.

When Queen Elizabeth II addressed Congress in 1991, she spoke of the dangers of power that grows “from the barrel of a gun” and emphasised NATO, liberal values, and cultural diversity. According to historian Philip Murphy, such language today “would be taken as a direct attack on Trump.”

Instead, Charles is expected to take a more nuanced route—appealing “almost over the head of Trump to the American public.” The message, Murphy suggested, will likely emphasise shared values: democracy, freedom, and a long-standing cultural bond.

Seldon believes the King may not need to mention Trump at all. A carefully crafted speech, “very deftly, gently, and in a polite and respectful way,” could remind Americans of their foundational ideals—leaving listeners to draw their own conclusions about whether current leadership aligns with those principles.

Private talks, public risks

One of the most sensitive moments of the visit will take place behind closed doors: a private meeting between Charles and Trump in the Oval Office.

The decision to keep discussions private—limited to a brief photo opportunity—appears deliberate. It follows global attention on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent diplomatic discomfort in Washington.

Charles enters the room aware of past tensions. Trump has previously criticised the UK prime minister and mocked British military capabilities. As monarch, Charles is also head of state of Canada—a country that has faced its own provocations from Trump.

“He’ll be very careful about what he says,” Murphy noted, adding that anything discussed privately could easily find its way into the public domain. “I don’t think Trump has a strong sense of what is private and what is not.”

Lingering shadows: Epstein and royal rifts

Beyond geopolitics, the visit is shadowed by unresolved royal controversies.

Questions surrounding Jeffrey Epstein and his connections to the British royal family have resurfaced. Calls from US figures, including Congresswoman Ro Khanna, for the King and Queen Camilla to meet Epstein survivors have been firmly declined by the palace. Officials argue such a meeting could interfere with ongoing investigations and legal proceedings.

At the same time, the absence of any interaction with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle—who live in California—underscores the continuing distance within the royal family. No reunion is planned during the visit.

There is also the risk of protests or public disruptions, though the itinerary has been carefully designed to minimise unscripted encounters. A single “block party” appearance in Virginia may be the only moment where the King and Queen come into direct contact with the public.

A moment of risk—and opportunity

For all its risks, the visit also offers King Charles III a chance to reshape perceptions.

After years dominated by headlines about royal disputes and scandal, this trip provides an opportunity to demonstrate the enduring relevance of the monarchy on the global stage.

As Murphy put it, “one talks about the risks, but there’s also a benefit for him here.” By rising above political divisions and focusing on shared values, Charles may yet reinforce a relationship that has weathered crises before.

Whether he succeeds will depend not just on diplomacy, but on tone, timing—and a careful reading of a moment where symbolism and politics are tightly intertwined.

Oil prices fell sharply and global stock markets surged after Iran announced that the Strait of Hormuz would remain open during ceasefire. The move eased fears of supply disruptions, bringing oil below $90 per barrel. Investors reacted positively.

Global markets saw a sharp shift on Friday after Iran announced that the Strait of Hormuz would remain open during the ongoing ceasefire. Oil prices dropped quickly, while stock markets in the United States and Europe moved higher.

This sudden change has raised hopes that tensions in the Middle East may ease and global trade could return to normal.

Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, said that the Strait of Hormuz would be “completely open” for commercial ships during the ceasefire period.

He wrote on social media that all vessels can pass through the route, though they must follow a coordinated path set by Iranian authorities.

In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage for all commercial vessels through Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open for the remaining period of ceasefire, on the coordinated route as already announced by Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Rep. of Iran.

— Seyed Abbas Araghchi (@araghchi) April 17, 2026

This announcement is important because the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical shipping routes for oil.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway through which about one-fifth of the world’s crude oil passes.

During the recent conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, the route faced disruptions. This pushed oil prices up to nearly $120 per barrel and created fears of a global economic slowdown.

Any change in the status of this route directly affects fuel prices, transport costs, and the wider economy.

Immediate impact on oil prices

After Iran’s announcement, oil prices dropped sharply.

Brent crude fell nearly 10 percent to about $89.56 per barrel West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropped over 10 percent to around $81.88 per barrel

This was one of the biggest single-day drops in recent times.

Market experts said the fall shows how quickly oil reacts to news about supply routes and conflict.

At the same time, stock markets rose. In the United States:

The Dow Jones increased by about 1.3 percent

The S&P 500 rose by around 0.7 percent

The Nasdaq Composite gained nearly 0.9 percent

These gains added to record highs reached earlier.

European markets also climbed, with Germany’s DAX and France’s CAC 40 rising by around 2 percent.

However, Asian markets mostly closed lower. Tokyo’s Nikkei dropped after hitting a record high a day earlier, while Hong Kong and Shanghai also saw slight declines.

Lower oil prices often reduce costs for businesses and transport. This improves company profits and supports economic growth.

Experts also said the market is reacting to hopes that the conflict may end soon.

Kathleen Brooks from XTB said this is the biggest positive development during the ceasefire and could bring supply chains back to normal.

Another analyst, David Morrison, pointed out that the strong rise in markets is forcing some investors to re-enter quickly, adding to the rally.

The announcement is linked to ongoing ceasefire efforts in the region. There is some confusion about whether it refers to:

A 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel Or an earlier two-week truce between Iran and the United States

Still, the move has increased hopes for further peace talks.

Donald Trump also confirmed that the strait is open but said that the US blockade on Iran’s ports is still in place.

He added that talks are ongoing and leaders may soon meet to push for peace.

Global leaders step in

Efforts are also being made at the international level.

Emmanuel Macron and Keir Starmer held talks with allies about possibly sending a multinational force.

The goal would be to ensure that trade continues smoothly through the Strait of Hormuz once the conflict ends.

Market experts say emotions are also playing a role.

The sharp rise in stocks has created a “fear of missing out” among investors. Many who sold earlier during the conflict are now buying again to avoid losses.

David Morrison noted that the S&P 500 has risen nearly 12 percent in just over two weeks, showing how quickly markets can recover.

Strong company earnings in the first quarter are also supporting this upward trend.

Currency markets and global indicators

Currency markets also reflected the changes:

The euro and pound rose against the dollar The Japanese yen strengthened slightly The dollar weakened overall

These shifts show growing confidence among investors.

What happened in Asia and global indices

Asian markets did not follow the same trend fully.

Tokyo’s Nikkei index fell by 1.8 percent after reaching a record high earlier. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng dropped 0.9 percent, while Shanghai saw a small decline.

Taiwan’s TAIEX index also fell after reaching a major milestone, becoming one of the world’s largest indices by value.

While the overall market was positive, some companies faced losses.

Streaming giant Netflix dropped more than 10 percent after weak forecasts disappointed investors.

Its co-founder Reed Hastings also announced he would step down as chairman in June.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is a major step towards stability. Lower oil prices can reduce inflation and ease pressure on economies worldwide.

At the same time, rising stock markets show growing confidence that the conflict may not last long.

However, risks remain. The situation depends on how long the ceasefire holds and whether peace talks succeed.Key things to watch in the coming days include:

Whether the ceasefire continues

Progress in peace talks

Any changes in US sanctions or blockades

Stability in oil supply routes

Markets are likely to remain sensitive to every update.

Iran’s decision to keep the Strait of Hormuz open has had a powerful effect on global markets. Oil prices dropped sharply, while stock markets surged on hopes of peace.

While the situation is still uncertain, this move has brought some relief to investors and economies around the world.

Crude oil prices surged sharply after rising tensions between US and Iran triggered fears of supply disruption. Brent crude crossed $109/barrel, while WTI touched $111. Global events, attacks and rising food prices, are adding to the pressure.

Global oil prices saw a big increase on Thursday. Brent crude rose by around 8 percent to reach about 109.24 dollars per barrel. At the same time, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was trading at around 111.54 dollars per barrel. Crude oil markets on April 3 remained closed on the occasion of Good Friday.

WTI crude has seen a rise of nearly 11.94 percent compared to last week. However, Brent crude showed a slight drop of 3.14 percent over the same period, according to Barron's.

A warning of possible military action by Donald Trump has created fear in the market. Investors are worried that oil supply could be affected in the coming weeks.

These sudden changes have surprised many in the market.

The biggest concern right now is the Strait of Hormuz. This narrow sea route is one of the most important oil passages in the world.

Around 20 percent of the world’s oil supply passes through this route. If this path is blocked or disturbed, it can affect oil supply across the globe.

So far, there is no clear plan on how this route will remain safe if tensions increase further.

The conflict in West Asia has now entered its fifth week. Attacks and counter-attacks have created fear among traders and governments.

There are reports of drone attacks and fires at major energy sites. In Abu Dhabi, a gas facility had to stop work due to debris from an intercepted attack. In Kuwait, a refinery also caught fire after a drone strike.

Such incidents increase the risk of supply disruption.

Global impact begins to show

The effect of rising oil prices is already visible in many countries.

In Bangladesh, office and shop timings have been reduced to save energy. The country depends heavily on imported oil and gas.

In Australia, petrol and diesel shortages have been reported in several areas. The government has asked people to fill fuel in advance.

In Thailand, the Prime Minister has blamed traders for hoarding fuel and causing price rise.

There are also concerns about shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Recently, a cargo ship linked to a French company managed to pass through safely.

However, it was one of the first such movements after attacks on ships started earlier this year.

Any disruption in shipping could affect global supply chains.

Stock markets react to oil surge

Stock markets around the world have reacted to these developments.

Asian markets had fallen earlier due to uncertainty, but Tokyo shares later recovered. Markets in Europe and the US also improved before the long holiday weekend.

Still, investors remain cautious as the situation is unclear.

Food prices and travel costs may rise

Rising oil prices also affect other sectors. According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, food prices increased by 2.4 percent in March. This is mainly due to higher fuel and fertiliser costs.

Airlines are also worried. In Japan, airlines are considering increasing fuel charges if oil prices stay high.

Countries take different steps

Different countries are trying to manage the situation in their own way.

Italy has extended tax cuts on fuel to give some relief to people. Ukraine has even offered to help keep the Strait of Hormuz open, based on its experience in the Black Sea.

In New Zealand, more people are buying electric vehicles as fuel prices rise.

For India, this situation is important. The country imports a large part of its oil needs. If crude oil prices stay high, petrol and diesel prices may not come down anytime soon. This can affect daily expenses and transport costs.

The rise in crude oil prices is mainly due to fear and uncertainty in global markets. Tensions between major countries and risks to key oil routes are pushing prices up.

Until the situation improves, people around the world may have to deal with higher fuel costs.

(With AFP inputs)

A tense moment unfolded in the German capital on Thursday when Reza Pahlavi, Iran’s exiled Crown Prince, was splattered with red liquid as he exited a press engagement. The incident occurred outside the federal press conference building shortly after Pahlavi had addressed reporters, where he delivered pointed criticism of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

What Happened Outside the Press Conference

Eyewitness accounts suggest that as Pahlavi stepped out of the venue, a demonstrator approached and hurled a red substance—later believed to be tomato sauce—onto the back of his blazer and neck.

Despite the shock of the moment, Pahlavi appeared composed. He was not injured, briefly acknowledged supporters gathered nearby, and was quickly escorted into a waiting vehicle that drove him away from the scene.

German police acted swiftly, detaining the suspect on the spot. Authorities have not released the individual’s identity, citing privacy regulations.

BREAKING: Pahlavi attacked by "protester" pic.twitter.com/oDBFdXUqI6

— Mossad Commentary (@MOSSADil) April 23, 2026

Iran's exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi was splattered with red liquid outside a press conference in Berlin. The suspect was immediately detained by German police.Pahlavi’s father, the Shah, was overthrown in 1979 after millions took to the streets. The red liquid was… https://t.co/ox196GNOsp pic.twitter.com/WTfCzb12gP

— Mario Nawfal (@MarioNawfal) April 23, 2026

A Protest, Not an Attack

Police indicated that the liquid did not appear to be harmful, reinforcing the likelihood that the act was symbolic—a form of protest rather than an attempt to cause physical harm.

Still, the optics were striking. The image of Iran’s most prominent exiled royal figure being doused in public raises fresh questions about how he is perceived—not only within Iran but also among the diaspora and international observers.

A Divisive Legacy

At 65, Pahlavi remains a controversial figure. He is the son of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran, whose rule ended in the Iranian Revolution after mass protests forced the monarchy’s collapse.

While Pahlavi has spent nearly five decades in exile, he continues to position himself as a potential leader should Iran’s current system fall. However, the depth of his support—inside Iran and among Iranians abroad—remains uncertain.

Supporters Show Up in Berlin

Earlier in the day, hundreds of supporters backed Pahlavi and his call for political change in Iran. Their presence highlighted that, despite the controversy surrounding him, Pahlavi still commands a base that sees him as a symbol of an alternative future for Iran.

Pahlavi, addressing journalists, called on European governments that have stayed out of the US-Israeli war against Iran to take other steps, from expelling Iranian ambassadors to helping Iranian citizens access the blockaded internet.

"The whole narrative of ceasefire and negotiation is still based on thinking that ... you're going to deal with people who all of a sudden have become pragmatists," said Pahlavi, who was visiting Germany after stops in Sweden and Italy.

"I don't see that happening," he said, condemning Iran's new leaders after the killing of supreme leader Ali Khamenei and other senior figures as "different faces of the same machine".

Pahlavi said Iran had "slaughtered innocent citizens by the thousands" and threatens Europe with long-range missiles. "No deal will solve this. No negotiations will solve this. It is in their DNA."

Pahlavi Positions Himself for Power Amid Divisions

Pahlavi, whose father Mohammad Reza was brought down by the 1979 Islamic revolution, has repeatedly said he was ready to lead a transition if the Islamic republic fell in the war that erupted in late February.

He however represents just one of several Iranian diaspora groups, who are often bitterly at loggerheads, and has failed to win recognition from US President Donald Trump, who has never officially met with Pahlavi and repeatedly expressed scepticism over his ability to lead Iran.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government was not due to meet Pahlavi, according to a Berlin spokesman, although several lawmakers were to hold talks with him.

The ousted shah's son was boosted by protesters chanting the name of the family dynasty during January rallies against the clerical system and then vast pro-monarchy demonstrations in February in Munich and several cities in North America.

"Inside Iran, tens of millions of Iranians chanted my name, and they still do," Pahlavi told the Berlin press conference, adding that "today's Gen Z in Iran are my biggest supporters".

Looking ahead, he voiced hopes for a popular uprising, saying that "the strategy is ultimately for people to be able to reclaim the streets".

(With inputs from AFP)

Spain's Noelia Castillo Ramos has become the focus of a national debate on euthanasia after seeking assisted death following a life-changing assault in 2022. Despite legal challenges from her father, Spain’s top court ruled in her favour.

Noelia Castillo Ramos, a 25-year-old woman from Barcelona, is at the centre of a major debate in Spain over euthanasia and the right to die. Her case has drawn national attention after she chose assisted death following years of suffering caused by a violent attack.

Crowds have begun gathering outside a hospital in Barcelona as Noelia prepares for a possible assisted death in few hours from now, bringing her deeply personal case into sharp public focus.

Noelia, who has lived with severe disability and trauma since a violent attack in 2022, has become the centre of a national debate in Spain over euthanasia and the right to die. Her decision, and her recent interview explaining her pain, have drawn widespread attention and emotional reactions across the world

Everyone is gathering outside the hospital in Barcelona that 25-year-old Noelia Castillo Ramos will be euthanized in 10 hours from now. Many more coming tomorrow. If she chooses to let them take her life, she will know that millions of people around the world are going to miss… pic.twitter.com/GONTD0pfjg

— Matt Wallace (@MattWallace888) March 26, 2026

Within 24 hours, Noelia Castillo Ramos will be euthanized in Spain. In 2022, Noelia suffered a gang rape in a supervised care center. This completely shattered her life. She attempted suicide, jumping from a 5-story building, which left her a paraplegic. Her father has… pic.twitter.com/hOIW1j8o2u

— Remix News & Views (@RMXnews) March 25, 2026

Her story went viral after she spoke to a Spanish news outlet, explaining her decision and the pain she has faced since 2022.

In 2022, Noelia was living in a government-run centre for vulnerable young people in Barcelona. During her stay, she was attacked by a group, leaving her deeply traumatised.

Struggling to cope with the trauma, she later attempted to take her own life by jumping from a building.

She survived the fall, but it left her paralysed from the waist down. Since then, she has been living with constant pain and serious disability.

According to Reuters, her condition also led to worsening mental health, making daily life extremely difficult.

In 2024, two years after the incident, Noelia applied for euthanasia. Her request was reviewed by a special medical panel.

In July 2024, the panel unanimously approved her application.

Spain legalised euthanasia in 2021, allowing adults with serious and incurable conditions to choose assisted death if they give informed consent.

Under the law, euthanasia involves a doctor administering a lethal injection, while assisted death allows the patient to take prescribed medication themselves.

Father’s legal challenge

Noelia’s case took a dramatic turn when her father opposed her decision.

According to People, he filed a legal objection, which delayed the process. He argued that his daughter’s mental health condition affected her ability to make such a decision.

He also claimed that she had shown improvement during rehabilitation and had changed her mind several times.

The conservative legal group Abogados Cristianos supported his case. The group said the state has a duty to protect vulnerable individuals.

As reported by BBC, her father argued that there is an “obligation of the state to protect the lives of people, especially the most vulnerable.”

In March 2025, Noelia appeared in court and spoke directly to the judge.

Her words were simple but powerful. She said, “I want to finish with dignity once and for all,” as quoted by the BBC.

Her statement highlighted her suffering and her wish to make her own decision about her life.

This is insane! The mom of Noelia Castillo Ramos just released a video in support of her daughter’s euthanasia. Her message to the people who are upset by this:“The last thing I can do is help you come to terms with it” pic.twitter.com/nHXAFHNk4Z

— Matt Wallace (@MattWallace888) March 25, 2026

Several lower courts had already ruled in her favour before the case reached Spain’s highest court.

In February 2026, Spain’s Constitutional Court delivered a final decision.

The court rejected her father’s appeal and ruled that there was “no violation of fundamental rights.” This confirmed Noelia’s legal right to access assisted death.

This marked a major moment, as it is the first time such a case has reached the country’s highest court.

Ongoing opposition and appeal plans

Despite the ruling, opposition to the decision remains strong. Abogados Cristianos has said it will take the case to the European Court of Human Rights.

The group’s leader, Polonia Castellanos, said they will continue fighting to protect what they see as the family’s right to save her life.

“We will not abandon these parents. We will continue to fight to the end,” she said in a statement.

A wider debate in Spain

Noelia’s case has sparked a wider debate across Spain.

While many people support the right to assisted dying, others, including conservative groups and the Catholic Church, strongly oppose it.

The case raises important questions about personal choice, mental health, and the role of the state in such decisions.

Experts say it also highlights the need for careful evaluation in cases where mental health plays a role.

At the heart of the debate is a young woman’s personal struggle.

Noelia’s story shows the human side of a complex issue. Her case is not just about law, but also about pain, dignity, and choice.

The ambulances belonged to a volunteer group that provides urgent medical help within the local community.

The damaged vehicles were part of Hatzola Northwest, a well-known volunteer organisation that offers fast emergency response. The group plays an important role in helping people during medical emergencies, often arriving before regular ambulance services.

'ANTISEMITIC ARSON' attack — Hatzolah volunteer Jewish emergency service has SEVERAL ambulances set ABLAZE pic.twitter.com/6YzMLOfvMZ

— RT (@RT_com) March 23, 2026

The fire caused serious damage to all four vehicles. According to the London Fire Brigade, gas cylinders inside the ambulances exploded during the blaze. This led to windows breaking in a nearby block of flats.

Thankfully, no injuries have been reported. However, nearby residents were evacuated as a safety step while firefighters worked to control the fire. Reports of such incidents have increased sharply since the start of the Israel-Hamas War.

Data from the Community Security Trust shows a large rise in reported cases in recent years.

Oil prices surged and global stocks fell as US-Iran tensions intensified after strikes on Iran's Kharg Island. Investors are worried about supply disruptions, with Hormuz effectively blocked. Trump warned Iran to reopen route or face severe action.

Global markets are under pressure as tensions between the United States and Iran increase. Oil prices have gone up sharply, while stock markets have fallen. Investors are worried about what might happen next, especially after strong warnings from US President Donald Trump. The situation has created fear and uncertainty across financial markets around the world.

The latest market movement started after US-Israeli strikes targeted Iran’s key oil export terminal on Kharg Island. This site is very important for Iran’s oil exports. Early reports suggested that energy facilities might have been hit, which caused oil prices to jump quickly.

Later, reports said the strikes mainly targeted military areas, not oil infrastructure. This helped calm markets slightly, but prices still remained high. Investors are reacting to every new update, showing how sensitive the situation is.

Oil prices rose strongly on Tuesday. The US crude benchmark, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), for May delivery jumped over two percent and was close to $115 per barrel. Brent crude, the global benchmark, also increased to more than $110 per barrel.

These prices had gone even higher earlier in the day before pulling back slightly. The main reason for the rise is fear of supply disruption. When there is a risk to oil supply, prices usually go up quickly.

Why The Strait Of Hormuz Matters So Much

A key issue in this crisis is the Strait of Hormuz. This narrow waterway is one of the most important routes for global oil transport. About one-fifth of the world’s oil passes through it.

Iran has effectively blocked this route since the conflict began on February 28. This has already pushed up oil and gas prices worldwide. The US has now given Iran a deadline to reopen the strait or face serious consequences.

President Donald Trump has warned that if Iran does not allow free passage, the US could launch massive attacks on Iran’s infrastructure. He even said that “a whole civilisation will die,” though he also added that he hopes it does not come to that.

While oil prices went up, stock markets moved in the opposite direction. Major US indexes, including the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq, all opened lower.

European markets also fell. London’s FTSE 100, Paris’s CAC 40, and Frankfurt’s DAX were all down during trading. Investors are worried that rising oil prices could slow economic growth and increase inflation.

Asian markets showed mixed results. Japan’s Nikkei ended flat, while Shanghai’s market went slightly up. Hong Kong’s market was closed for a holiday.

Market experts say the main issue is uncertainty. No one is sure what will happen next. Kathleen Brooks from XTB said the situation feels like “one long deadline after another,” with constant updates from the White House.

Another analyst, Patrick O’Hare, said the market is caught between hope and fear. Some investors believe the situation may calm down, while others worry it could turn into a bigger conflict.

This mix of emotions is making markets unstable.

How Iran Has Responded To US Warnings

Iran has not shown any signs of backing down. The country’s Revolutionary Guard has warned that it will target energy facilities across the Gulf if the US crosses what it calls a “red line.”

This warning has increased fears of a wider conflict in the region. Any attack on oil facilities could cause major supply problems and push prices even higher.

Rising oil prices affect almost everything. When fuel becomes expensive, transport costs go up. This can make goods and services more costly, leading to inflation.

Some countries are already feeling the impact. The Philippines reported that inflation rose to 4.1 percent in March, higher than expected and the highest in nearly two years.

In the United States, recent data showed that growth in the services sector slowed. Companies are becoming cautious because of higher energy costs and possible supply chain issues.

Governments around the world are now preparing support measures to protect their economies from another price shock.

Amid rising tensions, there was also confusion over comments made by US Vice President JD Vance. He said the US has military options that it has not yet used.

Some people took this as a hint that nuclear weapons could be considered. However, the White House quickly denied this. It said there was no suggestion of a nuclear strike in his remarks.

This clarification came after criticism from an account linked to Kamala Harris.

A Rare Bright Spot In The Market

While most markets were under pressure, there was some positive news. Samsung Electronics saw its shares rise about one percent.

The company reported that its first-quarter profit likely jumped by 755 percent to a record $38 billion. This growth was driven by strong demand for chips used in artificial intelligence.

The next few days are very important. The US deadline for Iran is approaching, and markets are watching closely. Any new action or statement could move prices sharply.

If tensions increase, oil prices may rise further, and stock markets could fall more. If the situation calms down, markets may stabilise.

For now, uncertainty remains the biggest concern.

(With AFP inputs)

Trump said US has delayed planned strikes on Iran's energy sites after 'very good' talks. Pause is for 5 days while talks continue. Oil prices fell sharply, markets rose. However, tensions remain high, with threats, missile attacks, military actions.

US President Donald Trump announced that he has ordered a temporary halt to planned military strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure.

He said this decision came after “very good and productive” talks between the United States and Iran over the past few days.

The pause will last for five days. During this time, both sides are expected to continue discussions to find a possible solution to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Trump shared the update on his social media platform, saying the final decision on strikes will depend on how talks progress.

The United States had earlier warned Iran of possible attacks on its power plants and energy facilities.

This threat came after Iran was accused of blocking the important Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments.

The US said such actions could affect the world’s energy supply. In response, it prepared for possible military action unless the situation improved.

Global markets reacted strongly to the news of a possible pause in conflict.

Oil prices dropped sharply. The global benchmark Brent crude fell by more than 14 percent to about $96 per barrel.

At the same time, the US oil benchmark West Texas Intermediate dropped to around $84 per barrel.

Stock markets also rose, showing investor relief that tensions might reduce, at least for now.

Even as talks continue, military activity in the region has not stopped.

The USS Gerald Ford, one of the world’s largest aircraft carriers, has returned to a base in Crete. The ship had earlier been involved in operations linked to the conflict.

Reports also said the carrier had a small fire incident earlier in March, which injured two crew members.

The situation in the Middle East remains tense despite the talks.

Iran warned that it could place naval mines in the Persian Gulf if its territory is attacked. This could affect shipping routes and increase risks for global trade.

Iranian state media also shared graphics showing possible targets in nearby countries, including power plants in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait, as well as major facilities in Israel.

Israel said its defence systems are working to stop incoming missiles from Iran.

Recent missile attacks injured dozens of people in southern towns near a sensitive nuclear site.

In another incident, Israel confirmed that one of its own artillery strikes accidentally killed a civilian near its northern border. Officials admitted serious errors in planning and execution.

Global leaders call for calm

Several world leaders have called for a peaceful solution.

Russia said the crisis should be solved through political and diplomatic means. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that tensions are already very high.

China also raised concerns. Its foreign ministry warned that if the conflict grows, the situation could become uncontrollable for the entire region.

France expressed support for its allies. President Emmanuel Macron said France stands with Saudi Arabia and is ready to help strengthen air defence systems.

The ongoing conflict is raising serious concerns about global energy supply.

Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency, warned that the world economy faces a major threat.

He compared the current situation to past energy crises in the 1970s and after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

He said the world is now dealing with a mix of oil and gas problems at the same time, and no country will be safe from the effects.

Attacks and defence across Gulf nations

Countries in the Gulf region are also facing attacks.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates said they successfully stopped fresh strikes.

In Abu Dhabi, an Indian national was injured by falling debris after a missile was intercepted.

Sirens were also heard in Bahrain, adding to fears across the region.

Israel said it carried out large-scale strikes on Tehran. Iranian media reported loud explosions in the capital, and thick smoke was seen rising in the sky.

These developments show that even as talks continue, the situation on the ground remains dangerous.

What happens next

The coming days will be very important.

If talks between the US and Iran succeed, tensions could ease and the risk of a larger war may reduce. However, if talks fail, the United States may go ahead with its planned strikes after the five-day pause.

For now, the world is watching closely as both diplomacy and conflict continue at the same time.

(With inputs from agencies)

Global financial markets showed fresh signs of worry on Tuesday as oil prices jumped and stock markets fell. Investors became cautious after doubts grew over whether the United States and Iran are close to any peace agreement. Markets had shown strong gains a day earlier after Donald Trump said there were “very good” talks with Iran and delayed planned strikes on energy sites. However, those hopes faded quickly when Iran denied that any negotiations were taking place.

Oil prices rise sharply

Oil prices moved up strongly again after falling the previous day. Brent crude climbed back above $100 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate also saw a sharp rise. Experts said the ongoing conflict and uncertainty are keeping traders nervous. The Strait of Hormuz, a key route for oil shipments, remains closed, adding more pressure on global supply.

Kathleen Brooks, a market analyst, said the war is still not over and markets need clearer signs of peace before confidence returns.

Stocks fall in US and Europe

Stock markets in Europe and the United States dropped after the earlier rally lost strength. Major indexes in New York opened lower, while European markets also traded in the red during the day.

The Dow Jones fell by 0.9 percent, the S&P 500 dropped by 0.5 percent, and the Nasdaq also slipped by 0.5 percent. In Europe, London’s FTSE 100, Paris CAC 40, and Germany’s DAX all recorded losses.

In contrast, Asian markets ended higher earlier in the day, catching up with Monday’s gains.

Doubts over Trump’s claims

The situation became more uncertain after Iran rejected claims of progress in talks. Iranian officials said no negotiations were taking place and accused the US of trying to influence oil and financial markets.

Soon after Trump’s statement about delaying strikes, reports emerged that gas facilities and a pipeline were hit in fresh attacks, adding to confusion and fear in the markets.

Analysts said investors are now questioning whether the earlier optimism was based on real progress or just temporary signals.

Unusual trading activity raises questions

Reports from major financial outlets said that a large number of oil contracts were traded just minutes before Trump announced the halt in strikes. This unusual activity has raised concerns among analysts, who are questioning whether some traders had early information and acted on it.

Those who bet on falling prices just before the announcement would have made profits when the market reacted quickly.

Eurozone shows signs of slowdown

The economic impact of the war is becoming clearer, especially in Europe. A key business survey showed that activity in the eurozone slowed in March. The HCOB Flash Purchasing Managers’ Index dropped to 50.5 from 51.9 in February. While a figure above 50 still shows growth, the sharp fall suggests weaker momentum.

Experts warned that rising energy prices and supply chain problems are hurting economic growth. This situation is often described as “stagflation”, where prices rise but growth slows.

Energy crisis spreads globally

The effects of the conflict are being felt in many countries. The Philippines declared a national energy emergency due to fears about fuel supply and rising costs. The government has allowed advance payments to secure fuel and plans to increase coal power production to keep electricity prices under control.

In Sri Lanka, authorities have taken steps to reduce energy use. Street lights, neon signs, and billboards have been switched off, and people have been asked to cut down on electricity use. Fuel prices have already gone up sharply in the country.

Fuel prices jump in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has also been hit by rising energy costs. The country increased jet fuel prices by 79 percent in response to the situation.

Since the start of the conflict, aviation fuel prices there have gone up by more than 100 percent. This is expected to affect airline operations and ticket prices.

Air travel disrupted worldwide

The aviation sector is facing serious challenges due to the war. Several airlines have extended flight suspensions across the Middle East because of safety concerns. Lufthansa has cancelled all flights in the region until the end of April. Air France-KLM and Cathay Pacific have also extended suspensions on key routes.

These cancellations are affecting travel plans and adding pressure on airline companies. Shares of major airlines have already fallen as a result.

Fuel shortage hits airlines in Asia

Vietnam’s national airline has decided to reduce domestic flights due to fuel shortages. The aviation authority said nearly two dozen flights per week will be cancelled from next month.

Airlines are also considering adding extra charges on tickets to cover rising fuel costs.

Technology services affected

The conflict has also disrupted digital services. Amazon Web Services reported problems in Bahrain after drone attacks in the region.

Several online government services were not working, showing how the impact of the war is spreading beyond just energy and transport.

Currencies and market indicators

Currency markets also showed movement as investors reacted to the situation. The US dollar gained against the Japanese yen, while the euro and pound weakened against the dollar.

These changes reflect a shift towards safer assets during uncertain times.

Overall, the situation remains uncertain as markets react to mixed signals. While there were early hopes of a peace deal, recent developments have made investors more cautious. Experts say that clear and steady progress in talks is needed to calm markets. Until then, oil prices may stay high, and global markets could remain unstable.

(With inputs from agencies)
