A strange chocolate robbery in Europe has sparked global interest after more than 12 tonnes of KitKat bars vanished while in transport, causing both alarm from the brand and an outpouring of jokes online.

Nestle, the Swiss food giant, acknowledged that a truck carrying a big shipment of KitKat chocolate bars vanished while its way from central Italy. According to Reuters, the cargo, which comprised around 413,000 bars from a new product line, was intended for Poland but never arrived. The particular area where the truck went missing has not been divulged by the firm, and both the vehicle and its cargo have yet to be located.

What has stuck out in this case is KitKat's response to the unprecedented incident. In a message that instantly went viral, the company leaned into its iconic phrase with a sense of humour.

"We always encouraged people to have a break with KITKAT, but it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tonnes of our chocolate," a business spokesperson said. It noted that, while it could "appreciate the criminals' exceptional taste," cargo theft remains an increasing threat for firms in all industries.

Nestle also revealed that the stolen chocolate bars are not entirely untraceable. Each batch carries a unique code, and anyone attempting to scan these codes would be prompted with instructions to contact the company.

Social Media Can't Keep Calm

As word spread about the chocolate robbery, social media users quickly turned it into a meme fest. One person remarked about the ridiculousness of selling such a large amount of chocolate on the illicit market, saying, "Imagine attempting to sell 12 tonnes of KitKats. Psst, you want a four-finger bar? Do not tell Hershey. The wafer black market is about to explode."

Another joked that they were waiting for a "hostage-style ransom note" in which chunks of KitKat were broken off and submitted as proof. Some people even added a satirical twist, implying that the event may have been a distraction from previous chocolate business issues, despite the lack of evidence.

Comparisons are being made to the deadly Normandy invasion.

Tensions between the United States and Iran have sharply increased after comments by Donald Trump about possibly targeting Kharg Island. Trump suggested that the US could take control of the island, though he also admitted it would need a long-term military presence. Kharg Island is a small Iranian island in the Persian Gulf, but its importance is huge. It is the main hub for Iran’s oil exports. Any attack or disruption here could affect global oil supplies and push fuel prices higher across the world.

NEW President Trump told the Financial Times he wants to “take the oil in Iran” and is considering seizing Kharg Island.“To be honest with you, my favourite thing is to take the oil in Iran, but some stupid people back in the U.S. say: ‘why are you doing that?’ But they’re…

— Open Source Intel (@Osint613) March 30, 2026

Experts say the situation is serious and should not be seen as just political talk. Reports suggest that thousands of US Marines may already be positioned in the region, raising fears that a military operation could be under consideration.

Why Kharg Island is so important

Kharg Island is only about 8 km long and 4-5 km wide. But it plays a key role in Iran’s economy. Around 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports pass through this island. It also has a storage capacity of about 30 million barrels, with millions of barrels already stored there.

The island is located close to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil routes. A large share of global oil shipments passes through this narrow waterway. This makes Kharg Island not just important for Iran, but for the entire global economy.

If the island is attacked or blocked, it could disrupt oil supply chains and lead to sudden price rises. This is why global markets closely watch any developments in this region.

A silence before a possible storm

The waters of the Persian Gulf may look calm, but experts say the situation is tense. The big question now is whether the US is preparing for a risky military move. Some analysts are comparing the situation to historic battles where sea-based attacks led to heavy losses.

One such comparison being discussed is the famous D-Day landing during World War II.

The Normandy lesson: a costly victory

On 6 June 1944, Allied forces launched a massive sea invasion at Normandy in France during World War II. The goal was to defeat Nazi Germany led by Adolf Hitler.

Thousands of ships carried soldiers across the English Channel. But as soon as troops landed on the beaches, they faced heavy gunfire from German forces hiding in bunkers and on high ground.

Many soldiers were killed before they even reached safety. The sea turned red with blood. Although the Allies eventually won, the cost was very high, with heavy casualties.

Experts warn that a similar situation could happen if forces attempt to land on Kharg Island.

Geography that favours defence

Kharg Island’s natural structure makes it difficult to attack. The surrounding waters are shallow, but the island itself rises into hilly terrain. This gives defenders a strong advantage.

Iran has reportedly strengthened this advantage by building bunkers inside hills and preparing defensive positions over many years. These bunkers are designed to survive air strikes.

This means that even if the US carries out bombing first, a ground attack would still face strong resistance.

The risks for US Marines

Military experts say any attempt by US Marines to land on Kharg Island would be extremely risky. To reach the island, ships would have to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has strong military presence.

Iran could use drones, missiles, and naval mines to target incoming ships. The exact number of mines or drones in the area is unknown, adding to the uncertainty.

Once near the island, Marines would face attacks not only from visible forces but also from hidden positions. Snipers, guided missiles, and drone swarms could make it very difficult for troops to move safely.

Experts say this could turn into a “trap” situation, where attackers are surrounded and face heavy losses.

IRGC’s strong defence network

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has spent years building a strong defence system around Kharg Island. This includes underground bunkers, anti-ship missiles, and advanced drones.

These drones can attack in groups and are difficult to detect. Anti-ship missiles can target large naval vessels, making them vulnerable if they come close.

Because of the narrow waters in the region, US ships may not have enough space to manoeuvre easily. This could make them easier targets.

A complex challenge beyond combat

The situation is not only about military strategy. Thousands of workers are present on Kharg Island, especially in oil facilities. Any attack would put their lives at risk.

US forces would also need to secure a wide area around the island, possibly up to 100 miles. This would require a large and sustained operation.

There is also no guarantee that capturing the island would force Iran to change its position. Iran could continue attacks from nearby coastal areas using missiles.

This raises a key question: would the risks outweigh the gains?

Fears of a wider conflict

Experts warn that any attack on Kharg Island could lead to a much larger war. Iran could respond by targeting oil facilities in nearby countries or by blocking the Strait of Hormuz.

Such actions could disrupt global oil supply and impact economies worldwide. Fuel prices could rise sharply, affecting daily life in many countries.

There are also concerns that the conflict could spread beyond the region, involving more countries.

Political strategy or dangerous gamble?

Donald Trump is known for his 'maximum pressure' approach towards Iran. His recent statements suggest he wants to show strength.

However, critics argue that a ground attack on Iran could be a serious mistake. Some compare it to 'disturbing a beehive', where the reaction could be strong and unpredictable.

There are also questions about long-term goals. Unlike World War II, where the enemy was clearly defined, the objectives in a potential Iran conflict are less clear.

Iran’s leadership under Ali Khamenei has shown resilience in the past. This makes it uncertain whether military pressure alone would achieve desired results.

Could history repeat itself?

History shows that attacking well-defended coastal areas is one of the hardest military operations. Even powerful armies can suffer heavy losses.

The example of Normandy shows that victory can come at a very high human cost. In the case of Kharg Island, the risks may be even greater due to modern weapons like drones and guided missiles.

Experts fear that thousands of soldiers could be at risk if such an operation goes ahead.

At present, there is no confirmed decision about a military strike. However, the situation remains tense, and global attention is focused on the Persian Gulf.

Kharg Island has become a symbol of both economic power and military risk. What happens next could shape not only the future of US-Iran relations but also global energy markets.

A horrifying case in Bali has taken a grim turn after police confirmed that severed body parts found on a beach belong to a Ukrainian tourist who had been kidnapped earlier this year. The victim, 28-year-old Igor Komarov, disappeared in February after being abducted in what police believe was a carefully planned operation. His case drew global attention after a disturbing ransom video surfaced online showing him injured and begging his parents to pay a huge sum of money for his release.

Authorities have now confirmed through DNA testing that the human remains discovered on the island match Komarov. The discovery has raised many questions about the violent kidnapping and the people behind it.

Also Read: India's Oil Policy Explained: No 'Permission' Needed From Anyone

Body parts discovered near Wos River

The remains were discovered near the mouth of the Wos River on Bali's eastern coast. Police said several body parts were found, including a severed head, a right leg, parts of the chest, thighs and internal organs.

Initial examinations suggested the victim had died around three days before the remains were discovered. At first, investigators said there was an 80% possibility that the remains belonged to Igor Komarov, according to a Daily Mail report. Further testing was required to confirm his identity.

The condition of the body made identification difficult because the remains had already started decomposing. However, investigators noticed tattoos on the body parts that appeared similar to the tattoos Komarov had on his body.

This raised strong suspicions that the remains were linked to the missing tourist.

Also Read: Odisha Woman Lured for Temple Wedding, Raped by Boyfriend and Stranger, Thrown from Building

DNA test confirms identity

Forensic experts later carried out detailed DNA testing to confirm the identity of the remains. According to Bali Police Senior Commissioner Ariasandy, six different samples were taken from the body parts.

These included samples from a molar tooth, a collarbone, a fragment of the thigh bone (femur), a rib bone, a toe bone and part of the shin bone. The samples were tested at the police forensic laboratory in Jakarta.

Authorities then compared the DNA with samples provided by Komarov’s parents. The results confirmed a match with his mother’s DNA.

“Based on the DNA test results, the body parts are identical to the victim,” Senior Commissioner Ariasandy said.

This officially confirmed that the remains belonged to Igor Komarov.

Tourist abducted in planned attack

Komarov was reportedly kidnapped on February 15 while riding a scooter in the Jimbaran area of Bali’s Badung district. Witness reports and police findings suggest the kidnapping was carried out by several men travelling in multiple vehicles.

Investigators believe the operation was highly organised and carried out in a coordinated manner. The attackers allegedly intercepted Komarov while he was on the road and forced him into a vehicle.

After the kidnapping, he was reportedly taken to a luxury villa in Tabanan, located on Bali’s mid-western coast.

Also Read: Woman Dies by Suicide in Lucknow After Husband Jokes, Calls Her ‘Bandariya’

Disturbing ransom video appears online

The case became widely known after a disturbing video appeared online showing Komarov injured and pleading for help. The video was shared on a Telegram channel and quickly spread on social media.

In the footage, Komarov appeared badly beaten with visible bruises around his eyes. He also appeared to have lost one hand.

Speaking through tears, he begged his parents to pay a ransom of 10 million dollars. In the video, Komarov claimed the kidnappers were connected to a criminal group that accused his father of taking money from them.

“Mummy, Daddy, I beg you, help me please,” he said in the clip.

He also said that his captors had already chopped off some of his limbs and that he had broken legs and injured ribs. Komarov warned his parents that he might die if they did not send the money quickly.

Igor Komarov, the son of a prominent Dnipro mafia boss known as Narik, was abducted in Bali. The kidnappers released a video warning that neither mafia connections nor the police could intervene. They demanded $10 million, claiming it had been stolen from them.It appears that… pic.twitter.com/x25eTJKzwF

— aka (@akafaceUS) February 23, 2026

Authorities have not officially confirmed the authenticity of the video, but it became an important part of the investigation.

Investigation leads police to Bali villa

During their investigation, police traced GPS data from a rented minibus believed to be used during the kidnapping. The GPS data led investigators to a villa in Tabanan. Police believe the ransom video may have been recorded at this property. When officers searched the villa, they found blood stains that were later confirmed through forensic testing to match Komarov’s DNA.

Investigators also discovered a phone and a bag believed to belong to him.

These findings strengthened the theory that Komarov had been held at the villa after his abduction.

Suspects identified in kidnapping case

Police have identified several suspects believed to be involved in the kidnapping. One foreign national, identified only as “CH”, was arrested earlier this week in West Nusa Tenggara.

Investigators say he allegedly rented the vehicle linked to the kidnapping. Police also claim he used a fake Belgian passport when renting the car. However, authorities said that CH was not directly involved in carrying out the kidnapping itself.

In addition to him, police have named six other suspects connected to the case. They have been identified by their initials as RM, BK, AS, VN, SM and DH.

According to investigators, four of these suspects are believed to have already left Bali through the island’s international airport. The remaining suspects may still be hiding somewhere in Indonesia.

All six suspects have now been placed on Indonesia’s wanted list. Authorities have also issued an Interpol Red Notice, asking law enforcement agencies around the world to help track them down.

Also Read: Kerala Woman Pins Boyfriend On Road During Clash In Thiruvananthapuram, Street Fight Video Goes Viral

Girlfriend’s social media posts

At the time of the kidnapping, Komarov had been visiting Bali with his girlfriend, social media influencer Yesa Mishalova. She has nearly 200,000 followers on Instagram. Just one day before the abduction, the couple posted a photograph together on social media.

The post was shared on Valentine’s Day and showed them posing together. However, there is no official confirmation that the criminals used social media to track the couple.

Search continues for suspects

Police in Bali say the investigation is ongoing. Detectives are now focusing on locating the remaining suspects and uncovering the full details of the crime. Authorities believe the kidnapping was planned in advance and carried out by a group with clear roles.

Investigators are working with international law enforcement agencies to track the suspects who may have fled the country. The shocking case has deeply disturbed both residents and tourists on the popular holiday island.

Bali is known worldwide as a peaceful tourist destination and violent crimes like this are extremely rare. For now, investigators say their main priority is to capture those responsible and bring them to justice.

Disclaimer: Certain earlier references in this article regarding the father of Igor Komarov have been removed after it was found that the information may have been inaccurate and could lead to misidentification.

By Dr Aparaajita Pandey

It is hard to describe the reported strike by the Iranian missile in the conventional sense of a conflict, it is however indicative of the shift in the geographical connotations of this conflict. This possible spill over from West Asia t the Indo – Pacific needs to be studied.

Diego Garcia is a coral atoll a little south of the Maldives in the central Indian Ocean. While the geographical description makes it sound like an idyllic vacation paradise, it is important to note that this island acts as a joint military base for the US and the UK. Its geographical position bestows it with strategic importance.

As the missile hit this tropical paradise, it became clear that Iran was signalling something significant; it underlined the permeability of the US’ defence and security infrastructure, that was previously assumed to be insulated because of it. However, at the moment this action alone is not symbolic of a new front opening in the war rather it signals towards an addition of geographical zones to the ongoing conflict. Instead of an attempt at some decisive confrontation, at the moment Iran is more interested in spreading the US to this, by making such controlled disruptions.

Iran is using a multi-approach; while the traditional armed conflict lingers on, at first the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz was used to create both a panic in the international market and also an understanding as to what countries stood to lose in case this conflict was to become protracted and the Strait were to close for long. Now, as the nation states dependent on the Strait for their energy needs are scrambling for supplies, and trying to find alternative routes to meet their energy needs, Iran has begun to allow maritime passage at a premium, thereby making this time of extreme dread and anxiety possibly quite profitable for themselves. This also plays well with shipping companies worldwide as an assurance from Iran of safe passage for a premium keeps the additional risk cover by shipping insurance firms relatively low.

Iran’s has plucked a page out of the play book of empires that have historically weaponised their geography as a leverage to attain monetary or strategic benefit. Much like the corsair economies of the Mediterranean or even an ode to the use of chokepoints during the Cold War; Iran has found a way of turning global insecurity into a steady revenue stream. Only now these tactics are even more effective as in this globalised era where all sectors are intrinsically related with each other; the ramifications of even the slightest of disruptions are multi-fold.

Missile strike on Diego Garcia

The strike on Diego Garcia must therefore be read alongside this maritime strategy. It is a display that Iran can cause destruction and mayhem in not just proximate adversaries, but the structural mainstay of US power projection. Critically, it accomplishes this without crossing the threshold into full-scale war. This is escalation designed to compel, not to explode.

The Indian Ocean region or the Indo - Pacific is now turning into an extended battlespace, where signalling, supply chains, and strategic infrastructure intersect. While the conflict remains concentrated in West Asia, its effects are however, no longer geographically contained.

For India, this is a structural challenge. As a state deeply contingent on maritime energy flows, it is vulnerable to precisely this kind of calibrated instability that Iran is manufacturing. Nevertheless, India is unlikely to abandon its longstanding strategic posture in the Indo - Pacific.

The United States on the other hand, faces a more profound dilemma. Even as the conflict’s spills over to the Indo-Pacific, the US along with NATO has been clear in their stance that it is not a net security provider in the region. They have recently emphasised the transatlantic nature of NATO and with the deepening of the fissure between the US and NATO, it is becoming hard to estimate as to what their reaction would be. This question is complicated enough without the addition of another power in the mix, but the spill over into the Indo – Pacific brings with it, China and challenges posed by it to western supremacy. A challenge that is a little too vast to be dealt with by a NATO style security architecture.

The conundrum for the US has become unavoidable, a disengagement from West Asia comes with obvious risks of escalation from Iran; and yet a continued engagement puts strain on its presence in the Indo – Pacific, specifically in terms of Taiwan. The situation begs for an invocation of the classic realist theory. Power balancing, deterrence, and actions centred around sphere- of – influence, are all reminiscent of the classical theory, however, the manipulation of energy flows, creation and monetisation of risks, and leveraging trade routes have added an economic element to the conventional military focus of the conflict.

Iran’s strategy captures this leap from military to economics. By neither escalating definitively nor de-escalating significantly, it engages a grey zone that confounds conventional reactions. It is not at the moment pursuing victory in the traditional sense; it is seeking influence within a structure that amplifies disruption. The economic outcomes are already detectable. Energy markets are tightening, shipping costs are increasing, and insurance premiums across key maritime routes are snowballing. Over time, this will enforce a general shift toward economic securitisation. Defence spending, particularly in maritime domains, is likely to follow.

The deeper consequence, however, is strategic. The strike on Diego Garcia shows a world in which insecurity is widespread, but security guarantees are limited. Conflicts can project power across regions, whereas alliances endure geographically constrains. The Indo-Pacific is less likely to be a conventional theatre of this conflict. However, it will progressively act as its strategic echo; absorbing shocks, recalibrating alignments, and exposing the limits of existing security frameworks.

Author is a Professor at Amity Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies, Amity University NOIDA.

(Disclaimer: The opinions expressed are solely those of the author and do not reflect the views or stance of the organization.

Global markets turned volatile as oil prices surged and stocks fell amid uncertainty over US-Iran talks. Crude crossed $100/barrel as tensions rose and Strait of Hormuz faced disruption. Mixed signals from both sides have shaken investor confidence.

Oil prices rose sharply on Thursday as hopes for a peace deal between the United States and Iran began to fade. Investors reacted quickly after Iran rejected a US proposal aimed at ending the ongoing conflict, which has now lasted for nearly four weeks.

Crude prices climbed by almost four percent during the day. Brent crude moved above $101 per barrel, while US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) traded close to $94. The sudden rise reflects growing concern about global oil supply as tensions continue.

Markets had earlier shown signs of calm after Donald Trump said that planned strikes on Iran’s energy facilities would be delayed. He also claimed that peace talks were underway. However, the situation quickly changed after Iran denied active negotiations.

Stocks fall across global markets

As oil prices rose, stock markets around the world moved in the opposite direction. Major indices in the United States, Europe and Asia all recorded losses.

Wall Street opened lower, with the Dow Jones falling by around 0.5 percent. The S&P 500 dropped 0.8 percent, while the Nasdaq fell by more than one percent.

In Europe, London’s FTSE 100 declined by 1.3 percent. Germany’s DAX and France’s CAC 40 also recorded losses. Asian markets followed the same trend, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index dropping nearly two percent and China’s Shanghai Composite falling over one percent.

Experts say this pattern is common. When oil prices rise sharply, it increases costs for businesses and reduces profits, leading to a fall in stock prices.

A major concern for markets is the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. This narrow waterway is one of the most important oil routes in the world.

Around 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas passes through it during normal times. However, the ongoing conflict has led to severe disruptions. Reports suggest that the route is almost closed, with Iran allowing only selected ships to pass.

This has raised fears of supply shortages. Any major disruption in this route can push oil prices even higher and affect global trade.

The situation has become more confusing due to mixed messages from both sides. The US is believed to have offered a 15-point peace plan to Iran. At the same time, Iran has reportedly proposed its own set of conditions.

Despite these developments, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has clearly stated that the country does not plan to negotiate directly with the US government.

On the other hand, Pakistan has confirmed that it is helping with indirect talks. Ishaq Dar said that messages are being exchanged through Islamabad. Other countries like Turkey and Egypt are also said to be supporting the process.

This unclear situation has made investors nervous, as there is no clear sign of when or how the conflict might end.

Adding to the tension, Donald Trump issued a strong warning to Iran. He urged the country to take talks seriously and warned of serious consequences if no agreement is reached.

In a social media post, Trump said that the situation could reach a point of “no turning back”. He also claimed that Iran had already suffered major military losses.

Such statements have raised concerns that the conflict could become even more intense, especially if diplomacy fails.

The conflict on the ground has also continued without pause. Israel reported that it had carried out strikes targeting Iranian military positions and infrastructure.

One of the major developments was the killing of a senior Iranian naval commander, Alireza Tangsiri. Israel claimed he was responsible for actions in the Strait of Hormuz during the conflict.

Air strikes were reported in several Iranian cities, including Isfahan, Shiraz and Tabriz. Some attacks also reached areas closer to the Afghan border, showing how widely the conflict has spread.

In response, Iran continued its missile and drone attacks on Israel. Falling debris from intercepted missiles reportedly injured several people.

Conflict spreads across the region

The violence is no longer limited to Iran and Israel. Other parts of the Gulf region have also been affected.

In the United Arab Emirates, two people were killed by debris from a missile intercepted near Abu Dhabi. Drone attacks were also reported in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Iran has accused some Gulf countries of supporting US military actions. In response, it has targeted energy sites and other important locations in the region.

These developments have increased fears that the conflict could turn into a wider regional war.

Rising oil prices and ongoing conflict are now affecting the global economy. Higher energy costs can lead to increased prices for goods and services, adding to inflation.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has already lowered its growth forecast for the eurozone. It also warned that inflation could rise further in 2026 due to expensive energy.

Germany, Europe’s largest economy, has also shown signs of weakness. A recent survey found that consumer confidence is falling as people worry about rising costs and economic uncertainty.

Markets react to uncertainty

Financial experts say the current situation is highly unstable. Analysts note that even small changes in news or political statements can quickly move markets.

Higher oil prices have also led to a rise in government bond yields. This means borrowing costs are increasing, which can slow down economic growth.

Experts believe that Iran may continue the conflict to maintain pressure through energy prices. Controlling supply routes gives it an advantage in negotiations.

Global leaders prepare for talks

Efforts are being made to manage the crisis. France, which currently holds the G7 Presidency, is set to host a major meeting next week.

Finance ministers, energy officials and central bank leaders from the G7 countries will gather to discuss the situation. They are expected to focus on stabilising energy markets and reducing economic risks.

Meanwhile, the World Trade Organization has warned that global trade is facing one of its worst disruptions in decades due to ongoing conflicts and rising tensions.

(With inputs from agencies)

Oil prices rose and global stocks fell over Middle East war fears. Despite US delaying action against Iran, uncertainty remains high, especially with tensions in Strait of Hormuz. Markets reacted negatively as conflict continues, affecting trade.

Global markets showed fresh signs of stress on Friday as oil prices climbed and stock markets fell. The shift came as early optimism over US President Donald Trump delaying action against Iran faded quickly.

Brent crude rose by 2.3 percent to $104.17 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate gained 2.6 percent to reach $97.08. At the same time, major stock markets in the United States and Europe slipped into the red.

Delay in action fails to calm markets

Earlier this week, markets had reacted positively when President Trump delayed a deadline linked to possible strikes on Iran’s energy assets. That move had briefly lowered oil prices and lifted stocks.

However, the mood changed again after the deadline was pushed further to April 6, with little sign of progress. Investors now believe the conflict may continue for a longer time.

Experts say traders are no longer reacting strongly to daily announcements from Washington, as uncertainty remains high.

A key concern for global markets is the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil routes. Iran continues to hold control over the area, and shipping has been affected.

Analysts say the route is effectively closed for some vessels, raising fears about oil supply disruptions.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have also warned that ships linked to its “enemies” would not be allowed to pass through the strait. They confirmed turning back three vessels trying to use the route.

Stock markets decline worldwide

The uncertainty hit stock markets across regions. In the United States, the Dow Jones fell 0.9 percent, the S&P 500 dropped 0.8 percent, and the Nasdaq declined 1.0 percent.

European markets also struggled. London’s FTSE 100 was down 0.4 percent, Paris’s CAC 40 fell 0.7 percent, and Frankfurt’s DAX dropped 1.5 percent.

In Asia, Tokyo’s Nikkei closed 0.4 percent lower. However, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 0.4 percent and Shanghai’s Composite index gained 0.6 percent.

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East shows no signs of easing. Iran has continued attacks across the region, while the United States and Israel have carried out airstrikes.

Reports said US-Israeli strikes hit two major steel plants in Iran, including facilities in Khuzestan and Isfahan.

Iran has also warned that buildings housing US troops could become targets.

Humanitarian crisis grows in Lebanon

The war is also causing a major humanitarian crisis. The UN refugee agency said Lebanon is facing a serious situation, with more than one million people forced to leave their homes since early March.

Officials warned that the situation could soon turn into a full-scale catastrophe if conditions worsen.

Kuwait confirmed that its main commercial port, Shuwaikh, was damaged in a drone attack. While there were no casualties, the attack caused material damage.

There were also reports that US and Israeli strikes have damaged at least 120 museums and cultural sites in Iran since the war began.

Diplomatic moves and global reactions

There are signs of possible diplomatic efforts. Reports suggest the United States and Iran may hold direct talks soon, possibly in Pakistan.

At the same time, G7 countries have asked for clarity on US plans regarding Iran. The UK has called for a quick solution to restore stability in the region.

Germany’s foreign minister also said Russia may be hoping the conflict diverts attention from the war in Ukraine.

The rise in oil prices is putting pressure on economies worldwide. Higher energy costs are increasing inflation and affecting daily life.

Several countries have taken steps to manage the situation. Vietnam has cut fuel taxes, India has reduced fuel costs, and Japan is considering easing rules on coal power use.

Spain, Poland and South Korea have also announced support plans, including fuel tax reductions.

China adds to global tension

Adding to market worries, China has launched an investigation into US trade practices. This comes after Washington began probing Chinese exports earlier this month.

This new tension between two major economies has further increased uncertainty in global markets.

In other developments, Ukraine and Saudi Arabia signed a new air defence agreement during a recent visit by Ukraine’s president.

Meanwhile, Iran has warned civilians to stay away from areas near US forces, raising fears of further escalation.

Outlook remains uncertain

Analysts say market sentiment is likely to stay negative as long as the Strait of Hormuz remains unsafe and the war continues.

With no clear peace plan and ongoing attacks, both investors and governments are preparing for a longer period of instability.

Oil prices showed a small drop on Monday, giving slight relief to global markets. This came as some oil tankers managed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy supply. The main Brent oil price fell by 0.8 percent to $108.20 per barrel. The US benchmark, West Texas Intermediate, dropped 1.4 percent to $110.01. Experts said this small fall does not mean the crisis is over. It only shows that some movement of oil has restarted, even though the situation remains tense.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important shipping routes in the world. A large share of global oil passes through this narrow waterway. Since the war began on February 28, Iran has mostly blocked the strait. This caused oil and gas prices to jump sharply from around $60 per barrel before the conflict.

Because of this, countries across the world are facing rising costs and supply worries.

Some ships manage to pass

There are signs of slight improvement. Turkey confirmed that a third Turkish-owned oil tanker safely crossed the strait. The ship, named Ocean Thunder, was carrying oil from Iraq to Malaysia. It had loaded crude oil from Basra in Iraq.

Two other ships also passed through safely over the weekend.

A Japanese shipping company, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, said an Indian-flagged LPG tanker owned by its unit also crossed the strait safely. These movements gave some hope to markets, even though normal traffic has not returned.

War continues to escalate

Despite these signs, the war situation remains serious. Israel carried out strikes on Iran’s largest petrochemical complex in Assaluyeh. This site is very important, as it produces about half of Iran’s petrochemical output.

At the same time, Iran launched drone and missile attacks on Israel, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. A senior commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards was also killed in strikes.

The conflict continues to grow, with both sides attacking each other.

Strong warnings and threats

The situation became more tense after strong words from US President Donald Trump. He warned Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face attacks on civilian infrastructure.

Iran responded by saying that even stronger attacks would follow if such actions were taken. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also warned that conditions in the strait will never return to normal, especially for the US and Israel.

These statements show how serious and dangerous the situation has become.

Talks of a possible ceasefire

Amid rising tensions, there are also signs of possible talks. Reports say that a 45-day ceasefire plan is being discussed. Countries like Pakistan, Egypt and Turkey are said to be helping with these efforts.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister confirmed that discussions are taking place with several governments. However, Iran has denied that it is in direct talks with the US or Israel.

This means peace is still uncertain.

Global economic impact

The war is not only affecting the region but also the entire world economy. Oil supply disruptions have caused problems in many sectors, especially aviation.

Indonesia has already increased fuel charges and allowed airlines to raise ticket prices. Air Asia X has also raised fares by up to 40 percent.

Higher fuel costs are making travel more expensive for people.

Countries look for new routes

To avoid risks in the Strait of Hormuz, some countries are changing their oil supply routes. South Korea plans to send ships to Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea port of Yanbu to collect oil.

Taiwan is also planning to use the same route. These changes show how serious the disruption has become.

Rising costs hit nations

Countries that depend heavily on imported oil are feeling the pressure. Sri Lanka has increased cooking gas prices sharply due to rising global costs. The country has warned that a long war could damage its economy further.

Many nations are now worried about inflation and slower economic growth.

Stock markets show mixed reaction

Stock markets in Asia showed mixed trends. Tokyo and Seoul markets closed higher, rising by 0.6 percent and 1.4 percent.

Singapore also saw small gains, while Jakarta slipped slightly. Many markets in Europe and Asia were closed due to holidays, which kept trading activity low.

Daily life amid conflict

Even as tensions rise, life continues in many places.

In Tehran, some people were seen enjoying normal activities like flying kites and spending time in parks. However, attacks have also hit residential areas in different countries.

In Israel, a missile strike killed four people in a residential building in Haifa. In Kuwait and the UAE, attacks caused injuries and damage.

Jordan has even started plans to compensate people whose homes were damaged by falling debris.

Wider regional impact

The conflict has also spread to other areas. In Lebanon, the group Hezbollah has been involved in attacks against Israel.

Israel has responded with strikes and ground action in parts of southern Lebanon. Smoke was seen rising over parts of Beirut after an Israeli strike. This shows how the conflict is spreading beyond just two countries.

The situation remains uncertain. Oil prices may continue to change depending on how the conflict develops. If more ships pass through the Strait of Hormuz, markets may stabilise. But if fighting increases, prices could rise again sharply.

Experts say the world is watching closely, as this conflict affects energy, trade and daily life across countries.

(With inputs from agencies)

Iran-Israel conflict is rapidly expanding across Middle East, with fresh Israeli strikes in Tehran and attack on Beirut hotel targeting Iranian commanders. Iran says it can sustain war for 6 months, while drone and missile attacks have reached Gulf.

The conflict between Iran and Israel is expanding across the Middle East and is affecting several countries in the region. Fresh Israeli air strikes, drone attacks, missile interceptions and rising civilian deaths show that the war is intensifying rather than slowing down.

On Sunday, Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards said the country could continue an intense war for six months if necessary. At the same time, Israel confirmed that it carried out a strike on a hotel in central Beirut where it claimed senior Iranian military commanders were staying.

The fighting has now spread far beyond Iran and Israel. Several Gulf countries reported missile and drone attacks, while energy supplies and oil markets are also facing new risks. Civilians across the region are increasingly worried as infrastructure damage and casualties continue to rise.

Below is a detailed explanation of the latest developments in the growing regional conflict.

Iran has signalled that it is preparing for a prolonged conflict.

A spokesperson for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the country’s forces are capable of sustaining a high-intensity war for at least six months at the current level of fighting.

According to the spokesman, Iran has so far used only its first- and second-generation missiles in the conflict. He added that the country could soon deploy more advanced and longer-range missiles that have not yet been widely used.

The statement appears aimed at showing that Iran still has significant military capacity despite ongoing attacks on its infrastructure and military leadership.

Iran’s leadership has repeatedly said it will continue fighting after the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed last week during joint strikes carried out by the United States and Israel.

His death triggered the current wave of fighting across the region.

One of the most dramatic developments came early Sunday when Israel launched an air strike on a hotel in central Beirut, Lebanon.

Lebanon’s health ministry said the attack killed at least four people and injured ten others.

The Israeli military said the strike was a “precision operation” aimed at senior commanders from the Quds Force, the foreign operations wing of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.

According to Israel, those commanders were planning attacks against Israeli targets.

Israel confirms a Beirut hotel strike killed IRGC Quds Force commanders planning attacks from Lebanon. At least four dead. Iran's officers are running out of places to hide.pic.twitter.com/WKXlNRcnYV https://t.co/KuFsDaFaKH

— Mario Nawfal (@MarioNawfal) March 8, 2026

The hotel that was struck is located in the Raouche area, a well-known seaside tourist district in Beirut. The area is usually busy with visitors and had largely avoided major damage in previous fighting.

An AFP photographer at the scene reported shattered glass, burnt walls and security forces surrounding the damaged building.

Guests were seen leaving the hotel quickly with their luggage after the explosion.

Lebanon has now become directly involved in the war.

The country was drawn into the conflict earlier in the week when Hezbollah, the powerful Iran-backed militant group based in Lebanon, launched rockets and drones at Israel.

Hezbollah said the attack was carried out in response to the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader.

Since then, Israel has launched multiple waves of strikes across Lebanon, particularly targeting Hezbollah positions.

Lebanon’s health ministry said at least 294 people have died in Israeli air strikes over the past week.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam warned that the country could soon face a humanitarian disaster if the fighting continues.

On Sunday, additional Israeli strikes were also reported in southern Lebanon, killing at least 12 more people overnight.

The fighting between Israel and Hezbollah has also intensified near the border between the two countries.

Hezbollah said its fighters carried out rocket attacks against Israeli forces and a city inside Israel. The group said these strikes were a response to what it called “criminal Israeli aggression” against Lebanese towns.

Hezbollah fighters also reported clashes with Israeli troops near the border town of Aitaroun.

#Breaking Hezbollah: We targeted a gathering of Israeli enemy army soldiers at the #Al_Malikiyah site opposite the border town of #Aitaroun with a guided missile & Rerum Novarum // Intel, Breaking News, and Alerts (@officialrnintel) March 8, 2026

There were no immediate reports of casualties from those attacks.

At the same time as the Beirut strike, Israel also carried out new air raids across the Iranian capital Tehran.

The Israeli military said it targeted fuel storage facilities and infrastructure used for military operations.

Iran accused Israel and the United States of also attacking an oil depot in Tehran, marking the first known strike on the country’s oil infrastructure since the war began.

Such attacks raise serious concerns because Iran’s oil facilities are critical to the global energy supply.

Financial markets have already reacted to the conflict, with stock markets falling and crude oil prices rising sharply.

Energy security has become one of the biggest concerns linked to the war.

Kuwait reported that an attack struck fuel storage tanks at its international airport, increasing fears that vital energy infrastructure across the Gulf region could become targets.

Kuwait’s national oil company later said it had reduced crude oil production due to threats around the Strait of Hormuz.

This narrow sea route is extremely important because about one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas shipments pass through it.

Any disruption in this area could cause major increases in global fuel prices and affect economies worldwide.

Several Gulf nations reported new attacks linked to the conflict.

Saudi Arabia said its air defence systems intercepted more than a dozen drones that were flying towards targets including the diplomatic district in the capital Riyadh.

Qatar said Iran fired two cruise missiles and ten ballistic missiles at the country on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates said its forces were intercepting incoming drones and missiles launched from Iran.

Video footage circulating online showed a projectile crashing at Dubai airport, though details about damage or casualties remain unclear.

Explosions were also heard in Baghdad and Erbil in Iraq, according to journalists in the area.

These developments show how the war is spreading across multiple countries in the Middle East.

The conflict has also caused American casualties.

US President Donald Trump attended the return ceremony for six American service members who were killed in a drone strike on a US military base in Kuwait last week.

Donald Trump has paid his respects to six U.S. soldiers killed in the Iran war.But the president had barely left the tarmac at Dover Air Base, when his attention turned to the UK's prime minister. Our U.S. correspondent @jamesmatthewsky has this analysis pic.twitter.com/HIEXV6Vgxq

— AF Post (@AFpost) March 7, 2026

The attack highlighted the growing danger faced by US forces stationed across the region.

Iran has previously warned that it may target US military bases and assets if the conflict continues.

Iran’s leadership has also warned neighbouring states that host US military bases.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran would be forced to respond if any country allowed its territory to be used as a launch point for attacks against Iran.

However, he said such a response would not mean Iran had a dispute with the people of those countries.

Instead, he described it as a necessary reaction to defend Iran’s territory.

On Saturday, the Iranian president apologised to neighbouring countries whose territories had been affected by attacks.

Iranian leaders say the US is 'trapped'

Iranian officials have also criticised the United States. Iran’s security chief Ali Larijani said the Trump administration expected a quick victory similar to the political situation in Venezuela, where the US tried to remove President Nicolás Maduro.

According to Larijani, Washington believed it could strike Iran, take control quickly and end the conflict.

But he said the situation has instead turned into a difficult and dangerous conflict.

“They thought it would be like Venezuela… but now they are trapped,” he said during an interview broadcast on Iranian state television.

Growing fear among civilians in Iran

Inside Iran, civilians are increasingly worried about the impact of the war.

Damage to residential areas and infrastructure has been reported in several cities.

Security forces are also highly visible on the streets.

A 26-year-old teacher told AFP that the fear of war is difficult to describe for people who have never experienced it.

“I don't think anyone who hasn't experienced war would understand it,” the teacher said.

According to Iran’s health ministry, at least 926 civilians have been killed and around 6,000 people injured so far.

However, these figures have not been independently verified.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel has gained almost complete control of the skies over Tehran.

This claim suggests that Israel’s air force can operate with fewer restrictions over Iranian territory.

Israel has already carried out some of its largest attacks since the war began, including strikes on:

A military academy

An underground command centre

Missile storage facilities

Netanyahu has promised to continue the war “with all our force” in order to destroy Iran’s leadership and military capability.

US hints at future military involvement

The United States has also indicated that its involvement in the conflict could grow.

President Trump repeated his claim that Iran had been close to developing a nuclear weapon, a key justification used by Washington and Israel for military action.

He also suggested that US troops might eventually be needed to secure Iran’s stockpiles of enriched uranium.

Such a move would represent a major escalation and could further widen the war.

The tragic strikes on elementary school during the conflict remain unclear. Iran said the school in Minab was hit by a deadly strike last week, killing at least 150 people.

The United States blamed Iran for the attack. Iran, however, accused Washington of responsibility.

Neither the US nor Israel has officially claimed responsibility, and independent verification of the incident has not yet been possible.

While the regional war intensifies, violence is also continuing in the occupied West Bank.

The Palestinian health ministry said two Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli settlers in the town of Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah. The victims were identified as:

Thaer Faruq Hamayel, 24

Farea Jawdat Hamayel, 57

The Israeli military said it is looking into the incident.

This was the second deadly shooting involving settlers in two days.

On Saturday, another Palestinian man was killed during an attack on a village called Wadi al-Rakhim.

Local officials said settlers entered homes and attacked residents during the incident.

Rising death toll in the West Bank

Violence in the West Bank has sharply increased since the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, which triggered the Gaza war.

According to an AFP tally based on Palestinian health ministry data:

At least 1,042 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since the Gaza war began.

Many of the dead were militants, but civilians have also been among the victims.

During the same period, at least 45 Israelis, including soldiers and civilians, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or Israeli military operations.

No clear path to end the war

Despite growing international concern, there is currently no clear plan to end the conflict. Analysts believe the war could last several weeks or even longer.

US and Israeli officials have said the fighting might continue for at least a month. President Trump suggested that Iran’s economy could eventually be rebuilt if a new leader acceptable to Washington replaces the late Supreme Leader.

Iran has strongly rejected this idea.

Two of Iran’s key international partners, China and Russia, have so far avoided direct involvement in the conflict.

China’s top diplomat Wang Yi said the war should never have started. Speaking at a press conference in Beijing, he warned against the use of force in international disputes.

“A strong fist does not mean strong reason,” Wang said.

“The world cannot return to the law of the jungle.”

The conflict between Iran and Israel has now grown into one of the most serious regional crises in recent years.

Air strikes, drone attacks and missile launches are spreading across several countries, including Lebanon, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Civilian deaths are rising, infrastructure is being damaged and global energy markets are feeling the pressure.

With Iran warning it can fight for months and Israel continuing its military campaign, there is still no clear sign of how or when the war will end.

The coming weeks may determine whether the conflict can be contained or whether it will spread even further across the Middle East.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has ended its 14th ministerial conference in Yaounde without reaching key agreements, raising fresh concerns about the future of global trade. The high-level meeting, which was expected to bring progress on important issues, instead ended in confusion and delay. Talks stretched beyond the planned closing time on Sunday and finally wrapped up in the early hours of Monday with no major results.

Key issues remain unresolved

The biggest disappointment was the failure to reach agreements on agriculture and reforms within the WTO. These are areas that many member countries consider urgent.

Another major setback was the expiry of a long-standing rule that had allowed digital goods to move across borders without customs duties. This rule, in place since 1998, covered items like e-books, music and online services.

Its expiry now creates uncertainty for global digital trade.

Meeting marked by confusion and delays

Observers described the meeting as chaotic. The NGO network “Our World Is Not For Sale” said the talks ended in “chaos and confusion”. Delegates present at the venue in Yaounde also expressed frustration. Many were confused by repeated delays and last-minute changes in meeting schedules.

Even countries not directly involved in key negotiations found it difficult to follow the progress of discussions.

WTO faces growing challenges

Experts say the outcome reflects deeper problems within the WTO. The organisation works on a rule that requires all decisions to be agreed upon by every member country.

While this system ensures fairness, it also makes it very hard to reach decisions, especially when countries have different interests.

The WTO is also dealing with a weakened dispute settlement system and rising tensions between major economies.

Experts warn of ‘harsh reality’

Several experts have pointed out that the lack of agreement shows a bigger issue — the world is moving away from unified global trade rules. Laurence Boisson de Chazournes, an international economic law expert, said the consensus system is being misused.

Former WTO official Hamid Mamdouh said the situation shows that member countries no longer share the same goals. He added that it may be better to have no agreement than a weak one that hides the real problems.

He described the situation as a “harsh reality” for the global trading system.

Differences over digital trade

One of the most debated issues was the e-commerce moratorium. This rule had stopped countries from charging taxes on digital goods.

Developed countries, including the United States, wanted the rule to continue permanently. However, many developing countries, including India, opposed this idea.

They fear losing important tax revenue if digital goods remain duty-free.

At one point, the United States and India seemed close to a compromise to extend the rule for five years. But the deal collapsed when Brazil objected at the last moment.

Brazil said it was unhappy with the lack of progress on agriculture and blocked the agreement.

Tensions between major powers

The meeting also showed clear tensions between major global powers. Observers criticised the United States for taking a strict position and not showing enough willingness to compromise.

At the same time, countries like China continued to push their interests more quietly.

Experts said many smaller countries were left trying to protect their own interests in this complex situation.

Routine work continues despite setback

Despite the failed talks, the WTO continues to function in some areas. It still monitors trade and ensures that existing agreements are followed.

More than 70 percent of global trade still takes place under WTO rules.

However, experts warn that without strong agreements, the organisation’s role could weaken over time.

No return to old system

The outcome of the Yaounde meeting has made one thing clear — global trade is changing. Experts say there is no going back to the old system where countries worked together easily.

Instead, the world is moving towards a more divided trade environment, where countries focus more on their own interests.

The WTO now faces the challenge of adapting to this new reality if it wants to remain relevant.

(With AFP inputs)

A new report has revealed fresh details about the sinking of the Iranian warship IRIS Dena near Sri Lanka. According to the report by Iran International, an Iranian sailor who later died in the attack told his father that United States forces had warned the crew twice to abandon the vessel before the strike. The information was reported by Iran International, which said the sailor called his father shortly before the attack. During the call, he reportedly said that American forces had issued two warnings asking the crew to leave the ship.

This version of events is different from Iran’s earlier statement that the warship was attacked without any warning. Iran had earlier accused the US of attacking without warning

After the strike, Iranian officials strongly criticised the United States. Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi claimed that the ship was attacked in international waters without any prior warning.

He described the attack as an “atrocity at sea” and accused the United States of acting aggressively against Iranian naval forces.

However, the latest account from the sailor’s family suggests that warnings may have been given before the strike happened.

Also Read: What Sparked the Political Storm Over President Droupadi Murmu's Visit to West Bengal?

Sailor said commander refused to allow evacuation

According to a source close to the sailor’s family, the crew had been warned about the danger before the attack.

The sailor reportedly told his father that US forces asked the crew to abandon the ship twice. But the warship’s commander allegedly refused to allow the sailors to leave the vessel.

The source said that some crew members argued with the commander because they were worried about the threat.

Despite the warning, the crew remained on the ship. Shortly afterwards, the attack took place.

US submarine torpedoed the warship

The Iranian navy warship IRIS Dena was torpedoed by a US submarine in the Indian Ocean on Wednesday. The attack happened about 19 nautical miles off the southern Sri Lankan port city of Galle. The strike killed dozens of sailors and caused the warship to sink in the sea.

The incident marked a major escalation in tensions between the United States and Iran.

US War Secretary Pete Hegseth described the strike as a “quiet death”, referring to the use of a submarine torpedo.

He also said it was the first time since the Second World War that the United States had sunk an enemy warship using a submarine.

Also Read: Iran-Israel War: Strikes Spread Across Region, Gulf States Intercept Drones | Latest Developments

Rescue operations launched after distress signal

After the attack, a distress signal was received by nearby authorities. Sri Lankan officials quickly launched a search and rescue operation in the area. Rescue teams later recovered 87 bodies from the sea. They also managed to rescue 32 survivors from the sinking warship.

Many of the sailors who survived were able to escape using lifeboats before the ship completely sank. The report also said that these survivors were mainly among the sailors who managed to leave the vessel early.

India also joined rescue efforts

The incident also drew attention in India because the Iranian frigate had recently visited the Indian port city of Visakhapatnam. The ship had taken part in the International Fleet Review 2026 and the multinational naval exercise MILAN 2026 hosted by the Indian Navy.

After receiving the distress signal, the Indian Navy also helped with search and rescue efforts. A long-range maritime patrol aircraft was sent to assist in the search operations already being carried out by Sri Lanka.

Another aircraft equipped with air-droppable life rafts was kept ready in case it was needed. The Indian naval ship INS Tarangini, which was operating nearby, was also deployed to support the rescue mission.

Another vessel, INS Ikshak, sailed from Kochi to assist with the operations.

Also Read: 'United Nations Has A Duty': Iran Urges UN Security Council To Act To Stop War With Israel And US

US asks Sri Lanka not to repatriate survivors

Meanwhile, the United States reportedly asked Sri Lankan authorities not to immediately send the surviving Iranian sailors back to Iran. According to a Reuters report citing an internal US State Department cable dated March 6, Washington requested Sri Lanka to hold the survivors.

The request includes the 32 sailors rescued from the IRIS Dena and 208 sailors rescued from another Iranian naval support ship called IRIS Booshehr. The cable suggested the US wanted Sri Lanka to delay repatriating the sailors after the incident.

The sinking of the Moudge-class frigate IRIS Dena has drawn international attention and increased tensions between the United States and Iran. It also highlights how the conflict between the two countries is expanding beyond the Middle East into wider international waters.

Crude oil prices surged sharply after rising tensions between US and Iran triggered fears of supply disruption. Brent crude crossed $109/barrel, while WTI touched $111. Global events, attacks and rising food prices, are adding to the pressure.

Global oil prices saw a big increase on Thursday. Brent crude rose by around 8 percent to reach about 109.24 dollars per barrel. At the same time, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was trading at around 111.54 dollars per barrel. Crude oil markets on April 3 remained closed on the occasion of Good Friday.

WTI crude has seen a rise of nearly 11.94 percent compared to last week. However, Brent crude showed a slight drop of 3.14 percent over the same period, according to Barron's.

A warning of possible military action by Donald Trump has created fear in the market. Investors are worried that oil supply could be affected in the coming weeks.

These sudden changes have surprised many in the market.

The biggest concern right now is the Strait of Hormuz. This narrow sea route is one of the most important oil passages in the world.

Around 20 percent of the world’s oil supply passes through this route. If this path is blocked or disturbed, it can affect oil supply across the globe.

So far, there is no clear plan on how this route will remain safe if tensions increase further.

The conflict in West Asia has now entered its fifth week. Attacks and counter-attacks have created fear among traders and governments.

There are reports of drone attacks and fires at major energy sites. In Abu Dhabi, a gas facility had to stop work due to debris from an intercepted attack. In Kuwait, a refinery also caught fire after a drone strike.

Such incidents increase the risk of supply disruption.

Global impact begins to show

The effect of rising oil prices is already visible in many countries.

In Bangladesh, office and shop timings have been reduced to save energy. The country depends heavily on imported oil and gas.

In Australia, petrol and diesel shortages have been reported in several areas. The government has asked people to fill fuel in advance.

In Thailand, the Prime Minister has blamed traders for hoarding fuel and causing price rise.

There are also concerns about shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Recently, a cargo ship linked to a French company managed to pass through safely.

However, it was one of the first such movements after attacks on ships started earlier this year.

Any disruption in shipping could affect global supply chains.

Stock markets react to oil surge

Stock markets around the world have reacted to these developments.

Asian markets had fallen earlier due to uncertainty, but Tokyo shares later recovered. Markets in Europe and the US also improved before the long holiday weekend.

Still, investors remain cautious as the situation is unclear.

Food prices and travel costs may rise

Rising oil prices also affect other sectors. According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, food prices increased by 2.4 percent in March. This is mainly due to higher fuel and fertiliser costs.

Airlines are also worried. In Japan, airlines are considering increasing fuel charges if oil prices stay high.

Countries take different steps

Different countries are trying to manage the situation in their own way.

Italy has extended tax cuts on fuel to give some relief to people. Ukraine has even offered to help keep the Strait of Hormuz open, based on its experience in the Black Sea.

In New Zealand, more people are buying electric vehicles as fuel prices rise.

For India, this situation is important. The country imports a large part of its oil needs. If crude oil prices stay high, petrol and diesel prices may not come down anytime soon. This can affect daily expenses and transport costs.

The rise in crude oil prices is mainly due to fear and uncertainty in global markets. Tensions between major countries and risks to key oil routes are pushing prices up.

Until the situation improves, people around the world may have to deal with higher fuel costs.

(With AFP inputs)

Tehran remains the hardest hit, while Iran has expanded retaliation across Israel and Gulf nations. Attacks near key oil routes and energy sites have pushed global oil prices higher.

As the the war between the United States, Israel and Iran enters Day 19, the fighting is still spreading across the region. While the number of daily attacks has slightly reduced, the conflict is reaching more places and affecting more countries. Since February 28, conflict trackers have recorded a total of 2,178 strike events, as quoted by an India Today analysis report. This includes 1,394 US-Israeli strikes and 784 retaliatory attacks by Iran and its allies. On March 17, there were 63 recorded strike events by US and Israeli forces inside Iran. In response, Iran and its allies carried out 37 retaliatory attacks across Israel and other parts of West Asia. Even though the daily numbers are lower than earlier peaks, the war is clearly growing in size and impact.

Also Read: Energy Crisis, Rising Prices: Pakistan Cancels Republic Day Parade As Fuel Shortage Hits Hard

How strike events are counted

The data comes from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED). It tracks 'strike events' rather than each individual missile or bomb. A single event may include several strikes at the same place on the same day. The count also includes:

Airstrikes

Drone attacks

Missile launches

Even intercepted attacks

Because of this, the numbers show patterns and spread of war rather than exact damage.

War spreads across 13 countries

In less than three weeks, the conflict has spread to 13 countries and territories. This shows how quickly a local war can become a regional crisis. Iran’s retaliation has not stayed limited to Israel. It has reached:

Gulf countries

Areas with US military bases

Key global energy routes

This wide spread is one of the biggest concerns for world leaders.

Tehran takes the heaviest blows

Iran’s capital, Tehran, has been hit the hardest. It has seen more than 460 recorded strike events, nearly one-third of all attacks on Iran. Another major target is Isfahan, a key industrial city. It is known for:

Nuclear research

Weapons development

Isfahan has recorded 35 strike events so far. Most attacks have focused on:

Western Iran

The capital region

Industrial and military zones

In contrast, eastern Iran has seen very few strikes.

Iran hits back across the Gulf

Iran’s response has been wide and strategic. It has targeted both Israel and countries linked to the US. Israel has faced the highest number of retaliatory attacks, with around 250 strike events. At the same time, Gulf countries have also been hit. These include:

Bahrain

Iraq

Kuwait

Qatar

Saudi Arabia

United Arab Emirates

Together, these countries have faced over 390 attacks. Among them:

The UAE has seen about 98 strikes

Iraq has seen around 74

These countries host US troops and major energy facilities, making them key targets.

A second front opens in Lebanon

The conflict has now opened another front in Lebanon. Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran, has launched rockets into northern Israel. This happened after reports that Iran’s Supreme Leader had been killed in earlier strikes. In response, Israel has:

Carried out airstrikes on Beirut

Sent ground forces into southern Lebanon

Cities like Beirut and Damascus have also been hit, increasing fears of a wider regional war.

Why oil prices are rising

The war is now affecting global energy markets. Key reasons include:

Attacks near Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil terminal

Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz

Strikes on gas infrastructure like South Pars

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil routes. A large part of global oil supply passes through it. Because of these risks:

Brent crude has crossed $108 per barrel

US oil prices are nearing $98 per barrel

Even small disruptions here can affect fuel prices worldwide.

Also Read: Oil Wavers, Stocks Jump As Markets Await US Fed Decision Amid War Tensions

Strait of Hormuz becomes a key concern

The Strait of Hormuz is now at the centre of global concern. Iran has effectively restricted movement through the strait. This has led to:

Fears of oil shortages

Higher shipping costs

Rising fuel prices

NATO countries are now discussing ways to reopen this route safely.

Attacks on energy and infrastructure

Recent strikes have targeted major energy facilities. One major flashpoint is the South Pars gas field, which is linked to Qatar’s North Field. Attacks here are risky because:

It is one of the largest gas reserves in the world

It supplies energy to many countries

Qatar has called these attacks 'dangerous and irresponsible'. Iran has warned it may target more energy infrastructure across the Gulf.

Nuclear plant incident raises alarm

Iran reported a strike on its only working nuclear power plant. Thankfully, no damage was reported. However, the incident has raised global concern. International Atomic Energy Agency is closely monitoring the situation.

Russia, which helped build the plant, called the attack 'unacceptable'.

Targeted killings increase tensions

The war has also seen high-profile killings. Iran confirmed the death of intelligence chief Esmail Khatib in a strike. Israel had earlier claimed responsibility. Another senior figure, Ali Larijani, was also reported killed. Iran has promised strong retaliation. Such killings increase anger and make peace talks harder.

Impact on civilians

Civilians are also facing the effects of the war.

In Israel:

Missile attacks have killed at least 14 people

In Lebanon:

Airstrikes in Beirut have killed civilians

In Iraq:

Power supply is affected due to gas disruptions

In Iran:

Funerals are being held for top leaders

Even sports teams are affected. Members of Iran’s women’s football team returned home after seeking asylum abroad.

Also Read: Israel PM Netanyahu's Latest Nowruz Video Sparks AI Rumours And Mixed Reactions Online, AGAIN! Leaders fear the conflict could:

Spread further

Disrupt global trade

Increase energy prices

No clear path to peace

After nearly three weeks, there is still no clear sign of peace. There are:

No active talks

No ceasefire plans

No diplomatic breakthrough

At the same time:

Targets are expanding

Attacks are spreading

Economic impact is growing

Iran has warned that the effects of the war will be felt worldwide.

Why this war matters globally

This conflict is not limited to one region. It matters because:

The Middle East produces about one-third of the world’s oil

Major shipping routes are affected

Many global powers are indirectly involved

Even countries far away may feel the impact through:

Higher fuel prices

Economic slowdown

Supply chain disruptions

Experts say the situation remains very unstable. Possible scenarios include:

Further escalation across more countries

Direct clashes between bigger powers

Continued attacks on energy infrastructure

If the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted, global oil prices may rise further. A diplomatic solution is still possible, but it may take time.

(With inputs from agencies)

Spain's Noelia Castillo Ramos has become the focus of a national debate on euthanasia after seeking assisted death following a life-changing assault in 2022. Despite legal challenges from her father, Spain’s top court ruled in her favour.

Noelia Castillo Ramos, a 25-year-old woman from Barcelona, is at the centre of a major debate in Spain over euthanasia and the right to die. Her case has drawn national attention after she chose assisted death following years of suffering caused by a violent attack.

Crowds have begun gathering outside a hospital in Barcelona as Noelia prepares for a possible assisted death in few hours from now, bringing her deeply personal case into sharp public focus.

Noelia, who has lived with severe disability and trauma since a violent attack in 2022, has become the centre of a national debate in Spain over euthanasia and the right to die. Her decision, and her recent interview explaining her pain, have drawn widespread attention and emotional reactions across the world

Everyone is gathering outside the hospital in Barcelona that 25-year-old Noelia Castillo Ramos will be euthanized in 10 hours from now. Many more coming tomorrow. If she chooses to let them take her life, she will know that millions of people around the world are going to miss… pic.twitter.com/GONTD0pfjg

— Matt Wallace (@MattWallace888) March 26, 2026

Within 24 hours, Noelia Castillo Ramos will be euthanized in Spain. In 2022, Noelia suffered a gang rape in a supervised care center. This completely shattered her life. She attempted suicide, jumping from a 5-story building, which left her a paraplegic. Her father has… pic.twitter.com/hOIW1j8o2u

— Remix News & Views (@RMXnews) March 25, 2026

Her story went viral after she spoke to a Spanish news outlet, explaining her decision and the pain she has faced since 2022.

In 2022, Noelia was living in a government-run centre for vulnerable young people in Barcelona. During her stay, she was attacked by a group, leaving her deeply traumatised.

Struggling to cope with the trauma, she later attempted to take her own life by jumping from a building.

She survived the fall, but it left her paralysed from the waist down. Since then, she has been living with constant pain and serious disability.

According to Reuters, her condition also led to worsening mental health, making daily life extremely difficult.

In 2024, two years after the incident, Noelia applied for euthanasia. Her request was reviewed by a special medical panel.

In July 2024, the panel unanimously approved her application.

Spain legalised euthanasia in 2021, allowing adults with serious and incurable conditions to choose assisted death if they give informed consent.

Under the law, euthanasia involves a doctor administering a lethal injection, while assisted death allows the patient to take prescribed medication themselves.

Father’s legal challenge

Noelia’s case took a dramatic turn when her father opposed her decision.

According to People, he filed a legal objection, which delayed the process. He argued that his daughter’s mental health condition affected her ability to make such a decision.

He also claimed that she had shown improvement during rehabilitation and had changed her mind several times.

The conservative legal group Abogados Cristianos supported his case. The group said the state has a duty to protect vulnerable individuals.

As reported by BBC, her father argued that there is an “obligation of the state to protect the lives of people, especially the most vulnerable.”

In March 2025, Noelia appeared in court and spoke directly to the judge.

Her words were simple but powerful. She said, “I want to finish with dignity once and for all,” as quoted by the BBC.

Her statement highlighted her suffering and her wish to make her own decision about her life.

This is insane! The mom of Noelia Castillo Ramos just released a video in support of her daughter’s euthanasia. Her message to the people who are upset by this:“The last thing I can do is help you come to terms with it” pic.twitter.com/nHXAFHNk4Z

— Matt Wallace (@MattWallace888) March 25, 2026

Several lower courts had already ruled in her favour before the case reached Spain’s highest court.

In February 2026, Spain’s Constitutional Court delivered a final decision.

The court rejected her father’s appeal and ruled that there was “no violation of fundamental rights.” This confirmed Noelia’s legal right to access assisted death.

This marked a major moment, as it is the first time such a case has reached the country’s highest court.

Ongoing opposition and appeal plans

Despite the ruling, opposition to the decision remains strong. Abogados Cristianos has said it will take the case to the European Court of Human Rights.

The group’s leader, Polonia Castellanos, said they will continue fighting to protect what they see as the family’s right to save her life.

“We will not abandon these parents. We will continue to fight to the end,” she said in a statement.

A wider debate in Spain

Noelia’s case has sparked a wider debate across Spain.

While many people support the right to assisted dying, others, including conservative groups and the Catholic Church, strongly oppose it.

The case raises important questions about personal choice, mental health, and the role of the state in such decisions.

Experts say it also highlights the need for careful evaluation in cases where mental health plays a role.

At the heart of the debate is a young woman’s personal struggle.

Noelia’s story shows the human side of a complex issue. Her case is not just about law, but also about pain, dignity, and choice.

The ambulances belonged to a volunteer group that provides urgent medical help within the local community.

The damaged vehicles were part of Hatzola Northwest, a well-known volunteer organisation that offers fast emergency response. The group plays an important role in helping people during medical emergencies, often arriving before regular ambulance services.

'ANTISEMITIC ARSON' attack — Hatzolah volunteer Jewish emergency service has SEVERAL ambulances set ABLAZE pic.twitter.com/6YzMLOfvMZ

— RT (@RT_com) March 23, 2026

The fire caused serious damage to all four vehicles. According to the London Fire Brigade, gas cylinders inside the ambulances exploded during the blaze. This led to windows breaking in a nearby block of flats.

Thankfully, no injuries have been reported. However, nearby residents were evacuated as a safety step while firefighters worked to control the fire. Early signs suggest it could be linked to hate crime, but officials say all possibilities are being examined.

This incident comes at a time when concerns about antisemitic acts are rising in the UK. Reports of such incidents have increased sharply since the start of the Israel-Hamas War.

Data from the Community Security Trust shows a large rise in reported cases in recent years. Many members of the Jewish community say they feel more unsafe than before.

Golders Green has a large Jewish population, and the attack has caused fear and anger among residents. Many people have expressed concern that even emergency services are being targeted.

Local leaders and community groups have called for strict action and better protection. They say such acts not only damage property but also create fear among innocent people.

A call for unity and safety

Authorities have urged people to stay calm and support each other.

Iranian state television on Friday reported a fresh drone strike on a ship in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The attack reportedly caused a fire on board. The incident happened on the seventh day of the war involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

The television channel did not specify the type of vessel or where it came from. Earlier, an Iranian military spokesperson said a US oil tanker was “on fire” after being targeted by Iranian forces.

Explosions reported near Erbil airport in Iraqi Kurdistan

Explosions were heard near Erbil airport in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region. The attack also forced a US-run oil field to stop production. AFP journalists reported hearing blasts and seeing grey smoke rising from near the airport area, which hosts US-led coalition troops.

Authorities in Iraqi Kurdistan said oil production at a field operated by the US company HKN Energy had been halted following the attack. Separately, four drones struck Basra airport in southern Iraq and two nearby oil facilities, according to a security official who spoke to AFP.

Also Read: Earth Warming Faster Than Ever Before, New Study Raises Alarm

Iran launches attacks on US bases in Kuwait

Iran’s army said it had attacked US military bases in Kuwait and warned that more strikes would follow.

Explosions were heard in Kuwait City, according to an AFP journalist. Authorities said they were responding to missile and drone strikes.

“These attacks will continue in the coming hours,” the Iranian army said in a statement carried by Iranian state television.

Earlier, Kuwait’s defence ministry said that 67 Kuwaiti army personnel had been injured during the conflict, the highest number reported by any Gulf military so far.

New York Times investigation links US to deadly school strike

A report by The New York Times said the United States was most likely responsible for a strike that reportedly killed many people at an Iranian elementary school.

The strike took place on February 28 in the southern Iranian city of Minab. Iranian officials say at least 150 people were killed.

Neither the United States nor Israel has officially claimed responsibility for the attack. The school was located close to sites controlled by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).

Also Read: India's Oil Policy Explained: No 'Permission' Needed From Anyone

European leaders warn about wider consequences of war

European leaders have expressed growing concern about the war spreading across the region.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that the conflict should not lead to the collapse of the Iranian state. He said such a situation could trigger serious problems for Europe, including migration pressures and risks to energy supplies.

“An endless war is not in our interest,” Merz said.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also called for cooperation rather than confrontation in relations with the United States. His government has opposed Washington’s use of Spanish bases for operations related to the conflict.

Ukraine to send drone experts to Gulf region

Ukraine is expected to send military experts to the Gulf region to help defend against Iranian drone attacks.

A senior Ukrainian official told AFP that the personnel could arrive in the region soon.

Ukraine has developed effective drone interception technologies during its war with Russia. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the United States had requested help to counter Iranian drones that have recently targeted Israel and Gulf countries.

IEA says global oil supply remains stable

Despite rising tensions, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said there is no shortage of oil in global markets.

“There is plenty of oil.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday posted a video on his X account wishing the people of Iran on the occasion of Nowruz, the Persian New Year. The video was shared with a caption describing it as his greetings to Iranians. In the message, he appeared to address the people directly, sending wishes and speaking about peace. However, soon after it was posted, the video began trending for reasons beyond the message itself.

تبریک نوروزی نخست وزیر بنیامین نتانیاهو برای مردم ایرانPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s greetings to the Iranian people on the occasion of Nowruz. pic.twitter.com/fVb0aTvhMZ

— Benjamin Netanyahu - בנימין נתניהו (@netanyahu) March 17, 2026

Also Read: 'Massacre Dressed Up As Military Operation': India Slams Pakistan Over Kabul Hospital Airstrike

AI rumours and conspiracy claims spread

A section of users on X began questioning the authenticity of the video. Some claimed it looked like it was created using artificial intelligence. Several users pointed to small details. One user said the shadow on a flag was moving in a different direction. Another asked why a ring was not visible at one point in the video. While many questioned the video, others reacted positively to the message. Some users welcomed the gesture and wished him back, sharing Nowruz greetings and expressing hope for peace between people. A few pointed out that earlier videos had also faced similar scrutiny and should be checked carefully.

The situation shows how quickly online platforms can turn a simple message into a wider debate, especially when rumours and conspiracy theories are already circulating.

There has been no official response addressing the AI claims linked to this video so far. The discussion continues online, with people analysing small details and sharing different views.

The incident highlights the growing challenge of trust in digital content, where even official messages can be questioned in the age of advanced technology.

Rumours about Netanyahu online

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been at the centre of viral rumours on social media claiming he had died or was assassinated. These claims gained traction after users questioned videos of him, alleging they were created using artificial intelligence.

In an indirect response, Netanyahu has shared multiple videos on X in an apparent move 'to prove he is alive'. In one clip, he was seen drinking coffee and showing his five fingers, addressing claims that an earlier video showed 'six fingers', which is a common sign people link with AI-generated content.

He also posted another video interacting with people, further trying to dismiss the rumours.

Ambassador dismisses AI claims

Reuven Azar strongly rejected the rumours. He confirmed that Netanyahu is “very much alive” and said he had personally seen him recently. Azar also clarified that the viral café video was real and not AI-generated. He warned that a lot of disinformation is being spread online regarding the issue.

PM’s office calls rumours fake

The Prime Minister’s office also issued a clear statement denying all claims. It said Netanyahu is “fine” and dismissed the rumours as “fake news”. This response came after media queries about viral posts suggesting the Israeli leader had been assassinated.

'Six-finger' claim fuels confusion

The rumours started after a video from a press conference went viral. Some users claimed they saw an extra finger on Netanyahu’s hand at one point, calling it an AI glitch. This led to widespread speculation and conspiracy theories, especially amid ongoing tensions involving Israel, the US, and Iran.

Despite official clarifications, the rumours continue to circulate online. The episode highlights how quickly misinformation can spread and how even real videos can be doubted in the age of AI.

(With inputs from agencies)

Israel has said its air force destroyed an aircraft used by Iranian leadership during a strike at Mehrabad International Airport. According to the Israeli Air Force, the operation targeted a plane linked to Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. The claim was shared in a post on the social media platform X. Israeli officials described the aircraft as an important strategic asset used by senior Iranian officials.

Aircraft described as key logistical and diplomatic tool

According to the Israeli military, the aircraft was regularly used by Khamenei and other senior officials from the Iranian leadership. It was reportedly used for both domestic and international travel.

Officials said the plane played an important role in military procurement and diplomatic coordination. The aircraft was also used to maintain relations with allied countries and groups that Israel refers to as “Axis” partners.

Israeli officials claimed the plane helped Iran maintain coordination with regional allies and manage military activities across the region.

Israel says destruction weakens coordination network

In its statement, the Israeli air force said the destruction of the aircraft would reduce Iran’s ability to coordinate with allied groups and rebuild military power.

השמדת המטוס פוגעת… pic.twitter.com/lOtRRIHTff

— Israeli Air Force (@IAFsite) March 16, 2026

Military officials said the plane helped Iranian leadership maintain communication and planning with partners in the region. They added that removing the aircraft would disrupt this coordination.

According to the Israeli statement, the strike removed what it called “another strategic asset” used by the Iranian leadership.

Also Read: Gujarat Shocker! Suspecting Affair, Vadodara Man Stabs Wife To Death After Fight

Strike part of wider Israeli air campaign

The strike on the aircraft was part of a much larger Israeli air operation. According to the Israeli military, more than 200 targets were hit across western and central Iran within the past day.

The operation reportedly targeted several types of military infrastructure. These included missile systems, defence installations and operational headquarters.

Officials said some of the targets were buildings where Iranian military personnel were operating. Other targets included facilities used for the production and storage of weapons and military equipment.

Focus on missile and air defence systems

Israeli military officials said the strikes are part of an ongoing campaign aimed at weakening Iran’s ballistic missile network and air defence systems. The air force said its operations have focused on locations believed to be linked to missile production, storage and launch capabilities.

Officials added that the campaign aims to reduce Iran’s ability to conduct or support military operations through these systems.

Advanced fighter jets used in the mission

To carry out the long-range operations, Israel used some of its most advanced fighter aircraft. The Israeli air force earlier released footage showing stealth jets heading towards Iran. In the video shared online, the aircraft were identified as Lockheed Martin F-35I Adir fighter jets. The jets are a specialised version of the F-35 stealth aircraft used by Israel.

The post described the jets as heading towards Iran for strike missions, highlighting the scale and reach of the ongoing operations.

Tensions continue to rise in the region

The reported strike and the wider air campaign come at a time of rising tensions between Israel and Iran. Military activity between the two sides has increased in recent weeks, with repeated strikes reported against military targets and infrastructure.

Israeli officials say the operations are aimed at weakening Iran’s military networks and reducing its ability to coordinate with allied groups in the region. Further details about damage on the ground or possible responses from Iran have not yet been officially confirmed.

Also Read: 'Obscene, Disgusting': Viral 'Towel Dance' Video From Bengal School Sparks Online Outrage

Israeli forces begin limited ground operations in southern Lebanon

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Monday that it has begun what it described as limited and targeted ground operations against Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon. According to the Israeli military, troops from the 91st Division have entered selected areas close to the border as part of what officials called defensive actions.

The army said the operations are focused on dismantling Hezbollah infrastructure and removing what it described as immediate threats to communities in northern Israel. Military officials said the activity is aimed at strengthening a forward defensive zone along the border.

Before ground troops moved in, Israeli forces carried out artillery fire and air strikes through the Israeli Air Force to weaken Hezbollah positions. The military said these actions targeted locations believed to be used by fighters operating near the border. Israel said the operations are part of wider defensive measures intended to protect civilians living in northern towns and villages.

The conflict in the border region intensified after Hezbollah launched attacks against Israel on March 2, saying it was responding to the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in joint strikes carried out by Israel and the United States. Following those attacks, Israel launched a series of air raids across southern Lebanon and later sent troops into certain border areas. Military officials say the current ground operations are carefully targeted and limited in scope.

Also Read: Earth Warming Faster Than Ever Before, New Study Raises Alarm

Israel says Hezbollah expanding attacks near the border

Israeli military officials say the latest ground operations were launched after they observed increased activity by Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon. According to Israeli military spokesman Nadav Shoshani, the group has recently expanded its operations and is firing hundreds of rockets toward Israel. He said intelligence reports indicated that Hezbollah had moved a large number of fighters into the southern region, including members of the elite Radwan unit.

Israeli officials claim these fighters were preparing for more attacks on Israeli communities along the border. Shoshani told reporters that the current ground operations are focused on specific locations where Hezbollah is believed to be operating. He said Israeli troops had entered new areas where they were not present the previous day. According to him, the aim is to remove threats that could target Israeli civilians. The spokesman also said the military would continue the operations for as long as necessary to secure the border area.

In recent days, Hezbollah has reported attacking Israeli forces gathering near the frontier and targeting military movements in several border towns. The group has also claimed direct clashes with Israeli forces in the town of Khiam. The town lies just across the border from the Israeli community of Metula and has become one of the main flashpoints in the current fighting.

Fighting intensifies as strikes and displacement increase

The Israeli military carried out several strikes before launching the ground operations, targeting bridges and roads that connect southern Lebanon to other parts of the country. Israeli officials said these strikes were aimed at limiting movement by Hezbollah fighters and preventing the transfer of weapons and supplies. Since the beginning of the conflict, Israel has issued evacuation warnings for large areas of southern Lebanon.

These warnings cover regions that stretch more than forty kilometres from the Israeli border. Lebanese authorities say the humanitarian impact of the conflict is growing. According to government officials in Lebanon, Israeli strikes have killed around 850 people since the current war began. They also say more than 830,000 residents have registered as displaced after fleeing their homes.

At the same time, Hezbollah and Iran have launched coordinated rocket and missile attacks against Israel in recent days. Israeli officials say they will not evacuate residents from northern Israel, unlike during the major war with Hezbollah in 2024 when tens of thousands of people were moved from border communities.

Despite a ceasefire reached in November 2024, Israel had continued frequent air strikes against Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. Israeli officials also said there are currently no direct talks planned with Lebanon to end the fighting, which has now continued for more than two weeks.

(With inputs from agencies)

Oil prices surged and global stocks fell as US-Iran tensions intensified after strikes on Iran's Kharg Island. Investors are worried about supply disruptions, with Hormuz effectively blocked. Trump warned Iran to reopen route or face severe action.

Global markets are under pressure as tensions between the United States and Iran increase. Oil prices have gone up sharply, while stock markets have fallen. Investors are worried about what might happen next, especially after strong warnings from US President Donald Trump. The situation has created fear and uncertainty across financial markets around the world.

The latest market movement started after US-Israeli strikes targeted Iran’s key oil export terminal on Kharg Island. This site is very important for Iran’s oil exports. Early reports suggested that energy facilities might have been hit, which caused oil prices to jump quickly.

Later, reports said the strikes mainly targeted military areas, not oil infrastructure. This helped calm markets slightly, but prices still remained high. Investors are reacting to every new update, showing how sensitive the situation is.

Oil prices rose strongly on Tuesday. The US crude benchmark, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), for May delivery jumped over two percent and was close to $115 per barrel. Brent crude, the global benchmark, also increased to more than $110 per barrel.

These prices had gone even higher earlier in the day before pulling back slightly. The main reason for the rise is fear of supply disruption. When there is a risk to oil supply, prices usually go up quickly.

Why The Strait Of Hormuz Matters So Much

A key issue in this crisis is the Strait of Hormuz. This narrow waterway is one of the most important routes for global oil transport. About one-fifth of the world’s oil passes through it.

Iran has effectively blocked this route since the conflict began on February 28. This has already pushed up oil and gas prices worldwide. The US has now given Iran a deadline to reopen the strait or face serious consequences.

President Donald Trump has warned that if Iran does not allow free passage, the US could launch massive attacks on Iran’s infrastructure. He even said that “a whole civilisation will die,” though he also added that he hopes it does not come to that.

While oil prices went up, stock markets moved in the opposite direction. Major US indexes, including the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq, all opened lower.

European markets also fell. London’s FTSE 100, Paris’s CAC 40, and Frankfurt’s DAX were all down during trading. Investors are worried that rising oil prices could slow economic growth and increase inflation.

Asian markets showed mixed results. Japan’s Nikkei ended flat, while Shanghai’s market went slightly up. Hong Kong’s market was closed for a holiday.

Market experts say the main issue is uncertainty. No one is sure what will happen next. Kathleen Brooks from XTB said the situation feels like “one long deadline after another,” with constant updates from the White House.

Another analyst, Patrick O’Hare, said the market is caught between hope and fear. Some investors believe the situation may calm down, while others worry it could turn into a bigger conflict.

This mix of emotions is making markets unstable.

How Iran Has Responded To US Warnings

Iran has not shown any signs of backing down. The country’s Revolutionary Guard has warned that it will target energy facilities across the Gulf if the US crosses what it calls a “red line.”

This warning has increased fears of a wider conflict in the region. Any attack on oil facilities could cause major supply problems and push prices even higher.

Rising oil prices affect almost everything. When fuel becomes expensive, transport costs go up. This can make goods and services more costly, leading to inflation.

Some countries are already feeling the impact. The Philippines reported that inflation rose to 4.1 percent in March, higher than expected and the highest in nearly two years.

In the United States, recent data showed that growth in the services sector slowed. Companies are becoming cautious because of higher energy costs and possible supply chain issues.

Governments around the world are now preparing support measures to protect their economies from another price shock.

Amid rising tensions, there was also confusion over comments made by US Vice President JD Vance. He said the US has military options that it has not yet used.

Some people took this as a hint that nuclear weapons could be considered. However, the White House quickly denied this. It said there was no suggestion of a nuclear strike in his remarks.

This clarification came after criticism from an account linked to Kamala Harris.

A Rare Bright Spot In The Market

While most markets were under pressure, there was some positive news. Samsung Electronics saw its shares rise about one percent.

The company reported that its first-quarter profit likely jumped by 755 percent to a record $38 billion. This growth was driven by strong demand for chips used in artificial intelligence.

The next few days are very important. The US deadline for Iran is approaching, and markets are watching closely. Any new action or statement could move prices sharply.

If tensions increase, oil prices may rise further, and stock markets could fall more. If the situation calms down, markets may stabilise.

For now, uncertainty remains the biggest concern.

(With AFP inputs)

Trump said US has delayed planned strikes on Iran's energy sites after 'very good' talks. Pause is for 5 days while talks continue. Oil prices fell sharply, markets rose. However, tensions remain high, with threats, missile attacks, military actions.

US President Donald Trump announced that he has ordered a temporary halt to planned military strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure.

He said this decision came after “very good and productive” talks between the United States and Iran over the past few days.

The pause will last for five days. During this time, both sides are expected to continue discussions to find a possible solution to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Trump shared the update on his social media platform, saying the final decision on strikes will depend on how talks progress.

The United States had earlier warned Iran of possible attacks on its power plants and energy facilities.

This threat came after Iran was accused of blocking the important Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments.

The US said such actions could affect the world’s energy supply. In response, it prepared for possible military action unless the situation improved.

Global markets reacted strongly to the news of a possible pause in conflict.

Oil prices dropped sharply. The global benchmark Brent crude fell by more than 14 percent to about $96 per barrel.

At the same time, the US oil benchmark West Texas Intermediate dropped to around $84 per barrel.

Stock markets also rose, showing investor relief that tensions might reduce, at least for now.

Even as talks continue, military activity in the region has not stopped.

The USS Gerald Ford, one of the world’s largest aircraft carriers, has returned to a base in Crete. The ship had earlier been involved in operations linked to the conflict.

Reports also said the carrier had a small fire incident earlier in March, which injured two crew members.

The situation in the Middle East remains tense despite the talks.

Iran warned that it could place naval mines in the Persian Gulf if its territory is attacked. This could affect shipping routes and increase risks for global trade.

Iranian state media also shared graphics showing possible targets in nearby countries, including power plants in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait, as well as major facilities in Israel.

Israel said its defence systems are working to stop incoming missiles from Iran.

Recent missile attacks injured dozens of people in southern towns near a sensitive nuclear site.

In another incident, Israel confirmed that one of its own artillery strikes accidentally killed a civilian near its northern border. Officials admitted serious errors in planning and execution.

Global leaders call for calm

Several world leaders have called for a peaceful solution.

Russia said the crisis should be solved through political and diplomatic means. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that tensions are already very high.

China also raised concerns. Its foreign ministry warned that if the conflict grows, the situation could become uncontrollable for the entire region.

France expressed support for its allies. President Emmanuel Macron said France stands with Saudi Arabia and is ready to help strengthen air defence systems.

The ongoing conflict is raising serious concerns about global energy supply.

Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency, warned that the world economy faces a major threat.

He compared the current situation to past energy crises in the 1970s and after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

He said the world is now dealing with a mix of oil and gas problems at the same time, and no country will be safe from the effects.

Attacks and defence across Gulf nations

Countries in the Gulf region are also facing attacks.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates said they successfully stopped fresh strikes.

In Abu Dhabi, an Indian national was injured by falling debris after a missile was intercepted.

Sirens were also heard in Bahrain, adding to fears across the region.

Israel said it carried out large-scale strikes on Tehran. Iranian media reported loud explosions in the capital, and thick smoke was seen rising in the sky.

These developments show that even as talks continue, the situation on the ground remains dangerous.

What happens next

The coming days will be very important.

If talks between the US and Iran succeed, tensions could ease and the risk of a larger war may reduce. However, if talks fail, the United States may go ahead with its planned strikes after the five-day pause.

For now, the world is watching closely as both diplomacy and conflict continue at the same time.

(With inputs from agencies)

Global financial markets showed fresh signs of worry on Tuesday as oil prices jumped and stock markets fell. Investors became cautious after doubts grew over whether the United States and Iran are close to any peace agreement. Markets had shown strong gains a day earlier after Donald Trump said there were “very good” talks with Iran and delayed planned strikes on energy sites. However, those hopes faded quickly when Iran denied that any negotiations were taking place.

Oil prices rise sharply

Oil prices moved up strongly again after falling the previous day. Brent crude climbed back above $100 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate also saw a sharp rise. Experts said the ongoing conflict and uncertainty are keeping traders nervous. The Strait of Hormuz, a key route for oil shipments, remains closed, adding more pressure on global supply.

Kathleen Brooks, a market analyst, said the war is still not over and markets need clearer signs of peace before confidence returns.

Stocks fall in US and Europe

Stock markets in Europe and the United States dropped after the earlier rally lost strength. Major indexes in New York opened lower, while European markets also traded in the red during the day.

The Dow Jones fell by 0.9 percent, the S&P 500 dropped by 0.5 percent, and the Nasdaq also slipped by 0.5 percent. In Europe, London’s FTSE 100, Paris CAC 40, and Germany’s DAX all recorded losses.

In contrast, Asian markets ended higher earlier in the day, catching up with Monday’s gains.

Doubts over Trump’s claims

The situation became more uncertain after Iran rejected claims of progress in talks. Iranian officials said no negotiations were taking place and accused the US of trying to influence oil and financial markets.

Soon after Trump’s statement about delaying strikes, reports emerged that gas facilities and a pipeline were hit in fresh attacks, adding to confusion and fear in the markets.

Analysts said investors are now questioning whether the earlier optimism was based on real progress or just temporary signals.

Unusual trading activity raises questions

Reports from major financial outlets said that a large number of oil contracts were traded just minutes before Trump announced the halt in strikes. This unusual activity has raised concerns among analysts, who are questioning whether some traders had early information and acted on it.

Those who bet on falling prices just before the announcement would have made profits when the market reacted quickly.

Eurozone shows signs of slowdown

The economic impact of the war is becoming clearer, especially in Europe. A key business survey showed that activity in the eurozone slowed in March. The HCOB Flash Purchasing Managers’ Index dropped to 50.5 from 51.9 in February. While a figure above 50 still shows growth, the sharp fall suggests weaker momentum.

Experts warned that rising energy prices and supply chain problems are hurting economic growth. This situation is often described as “stagflation”, where prices rise but growth slows.

Energy crisis spreads globally

The effects of the conflict are being felt in many countries. The Philippines declared a national energy emergency due to fears about fuel supply and rising costs. The government has allowed advance payments to secure fuel and plans to increase coal power production to keep electricity prices under control.

In Sri Lanka, authorities have taken steps to reduce energy use. Street lights, neon signs, and billboards have been switched off, and people have been asked to cut down on electricity use. Fuel prices have already gone up sharply in the country.

Fuel prices jump in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has also been hit by rising energy costs. The country increased jet fuel prices by 79 percent in response to the situation.

Since the start of the conflict, aviation fuel prices there have gone up by more than 100 percent. This is expected to affect airline operations and ticket prices.

Air travel disrupted worldwide

The aviation sector is facing serious challenges due to the war. Several airlines have extended flight suspensions across the Middle East because of safety concerns. Lufthansa has cancelled all flights in the region until the end of April. Air France-KLM and Cathay Pacific have also extended suspensions on key routes.

These cancellations are affecting travel plans and adding pressure on airline companies. Shares of major airlines have already fallen as a result.

Fuel shortage hits airlines in Asia

Vietnam’s national airline has decided to reduce domestic flights due to fuel shortages. The aviation authority said nearly two dozen flights per week will be cancelled from next month.

Airlines are also considering adding extra charges on tickets to cover rising fuel costs.

Technology services affected

The conflict has also disrupted digital services. Amazon Web Services reported problems in Bahrain after drone attacks in the region.

Several online government services were not working, showing how the impact of the war is spreading beyond just energy and transport.

Currencies and market indicators

Currency markets also showed movement as investors reacted to the situation. The US dollar gained against the Japanese yen, while the euro and pound weakened against the dollar.

These changes reflect a shift towards safer assets during uncertain times.

Overall, the situation remains uncertain as markets react to mixed signals. While there were early hopes of a peace deal, recent developments have made investors more cautious. Experts say that clear and steady progress in talks is needed to calm markets. Until then, oil prices may stay high, and global markets could remain unstable.

(With inputs from agencies)
