Actor Govinda has opened up about one of the most difficult phases of his life, recalling the emotional turmoil he experienced after the death of his mother, Nirmala Devi, in 1996. In a recent conversation with ANI, the actor revealed that he was so devastated by her passing that he once walked into the Narmada River, believing he might be able to reunite with her.

Nirmala Devi, a trained Hindustani classical vocalist and actress, died on June 15, 1996, at the age of 69. Govinda shared a deeply emotional relationship with his mother and has previously spoken about the strong spiritual impact she had on his life.

Remembering the period following her death, Govinda said he was consumed by grief and felt as though his life had come to an end.

“I was in a lot of pain. I was in tremendous pain. At that point, I felt that everything was over; that was it,” he said.

Govinda Admits He Was Trying To End His Life

When asked if walking into the river was an attempt to take his own life, Govinda acknowledged that it was, to an extent. He explained that his deep attachment to his mother made it extremely difficult for him to cope with her loss.

“Kind of. I was deeply attached to my mother. I was too much in love with her,” the actor said.

However, Govinda said he does not view the incident only through the conventional understanding of suicide. Speaking from his spiritual perspective, he said he believes that life continues in different forms.

“That’s what the world calls it. People use suicide type of words. We don’t really have anything like that. Life never ends. It takes on new faces; it takes on new forms,” he said.

Sadhu Helped Govinda Come Out Of The River

Govinda also recalled how a sadhu intervened while he was in the Narmada River. According to the actor, the man, whom he remembers as Ram Kundal, called out to him and approached him.

“He called out to me and came toward me. I came out of the river and he asked, ‘What happened, Govind?’” Govinda recalled.

The unexpected encounter became a turning point for the actor. Govinda said someone at the time made him understand that he had responsibilities and a reason to continue living, particularly for his children.

“I realised, actually someone said to me this at that time that I was doing something wrong… And I learned a lesson, I realised that I have to live for my children,” he said.

Govinda Says It Took 10-15 Days To Overcome The Phase

Govinda revealed that he did not immediately recover from the emotional turmoil. It took him around 10 to 15 days to gradually come out of that state of mind and begin looking at life differently.

With time, the actor realised that there was still more for him to experience. His mother’s death remained one of the most painful moments of his life, but the incident also made him reassess his purpose and responsibilities.

Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta are returning to the big screen together with Batwara 1947, Rajkumar Santoshi’s upcoming Partition drama. The film, earlier known as Lahore 1947, has generated considerable buzz ahead of its theatrical release, with reports now revealing details about its budget and cast remuneration.

According to reports, Batwara 1947 has been made on an estimated budget of Rs 150 crore. Sunny Deol is reportedly the highest-paid actor in the film, with a reported fee of Rs 60 crore for his role.

Preity Zinta, who is making a major comeback to the big screen, is said to have received Rs 10 crore. The two actors have previously shared the screen in films including The Hero: Love Story of a Spy, Farz and Bhaiaji Superhit.

The story follows a Muslim family that moves into a mansion previously occupied by a Hindu family. However, they discover that the elderly Hindu matriarch who lived there has refused to leave her home.

What initially becomes a source of tension gradually develops into a deeper human connection between the woman and the new occupants. Through their relationship, the film explores themes of displacement, communal conflict, loss and humanity against the backdrop of Partition.

The film features a strong ensemble cast, including Karan Deol, Kanika Kapur and Abhimanyu Singh alongside Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi and Ali Fazal.

Batwara 1947 is backed by Aamir Khan Productions, with Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit serving as producers. The film marks another collaboration between Rajkumar Santoshi and Sunny Deol, who have previously worked together on several projects.

'Joru Ka Gulam' director Shakeel Noorani arrested for sexual harassment

As per the police, Noorani had invited the woman to his residence in Malvani on the pretext of discussing an upcoming film project. He allegedly sexually assaulted her there. The case also involves allegations that he drugged the woman and later threatened her with a purported video The Malvani Police have registered a case under Sections 64(2)(M), 123, 351(2) and 88 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Following his arrest, Shakeel Noorani was produced before the Borivali Holiday Court by the Malvani Police and remanded to police custody until August 12.

The news of his demise was announced by his wife Alma Viator via a Facebook post. Jones died from a "massive heart attack" at home while preparing to watch a baseball game on TV, as per The Hollywood Reporter.

"I lost the love of my life today. Ben passed from a massive heart attack. He was home resting in his favorite chair waiting for the Braves to come on and whoop the Yankees. Ben had the most amazing rich full life. He loved and was loved by so many. He will be missed. I loved him so so much," read Alma's post.

With his character the owner of Cooter's Garage, located in Hazzard County Square right across from the sheriff's office, Jones appeared on 141 episodes of the Georgia-set Dukes of Hazzard, which ran for seven seasons, from January 1979 to February 1985.

Political Career

Bolstered by the show's popularity -- it was No. 2 in the Nielsen ratings in 1979-80, trailing only Dallas, which followed it on Friday nights on CBS -- Jones, a Democrat, ran for Congress in 1986 and lost a tight race to incumbent Pat Swindall for the seat in Georgia's 4th congressional district, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Two years later, however, he won in a landslide after Swindall was accused of lying to a federal grand jury about his dealings with an undercover federal agent posing as a money launderer.

After redistricting took his seat, Jones was firmly defeated by Newt Gingrich in 1994, but an ethics complaint he filed against his opponent contributed to Gingrich's resignation as House Speaker in 1998.

CINTAA in turmoil: 8 EC members resign, cite loss of confidence

In a significant development within the Cine and TV Artistes Association (CINTAA), eight elected members of its Executive Committee have resigned from their respective offices and from the association's Executive Committee with immediate effect, citing a loss of confidence in the present manner of functioning and calling for fresh elections.

8 EC Members Resign, Allege Unilateral Decisions

The eight elected members named by CINTAA General Secretary Upasana Singh are Hemant Pandey, Mukesh Rishi, Sahila Chadha, Hetal Parmar, Puneet Issar, Vindu Dara Singh, Vikas Verma and Deepak Parashar. In their joint resignation letter, the members said their decision followed what they described as repeated departures from the principles of collective decision-making, consultation and constitutional governance. They alleged that the functioning of the association had increasingly become concentrated around CINTAA President Poonam Dhillon and Senior Vice President Padmini Kolhapure, along with a section of other Executive Committee members.

Allegations Against President Poonam Dhillon

"The President, Poonam Dhillon, has repeatedly taken unilateral decisions, issued official communications through her ID to government officials and unilaterally decided communications to industry bodies. through the official CINTAA ID, and represented the Association in public and with other government, quasi-judicial and industry bodies without the knowledge, consultation, and/ or approval of the Executive Committee, thereby nullifying the principle of collective responsibility," a part of the letter read.

The resigning members alleged that several decisions were being taken without adequate consultation with, or approval from, the Executive Committee. The letter further alleges that Dhillon and Kolhapure visited government offices accompanied by privately engaged lawyers, who were allegedly introduced as CINTAA lawyers without the authority or sanction of the Executive Committee. These claims are part of the resigning members' stated reasons for losing confidence in the current functioning of the association.

General Secretary Confirms Resignations

CINTAA General Secretary Upasana Singh, speaking to ANI, confirmed that 11 members had resigned, of whom eight were elected Executive Committee members. Singh said the eight elected members had submitted their resignations along with complaints outlining their reasons for stepping down. "Out of our 11 members, eight elected members have resigned and submitted their resignations to me. They have also submitted their complaints, stating that Padmini Kolhapure and Poonam Dhillon are misusing their positions," Singh said.

Concerns Over Transparency and Communication

Singh also raised concerns about the use of personal email accounts for official correspondence. She explained that official communication from an association should ordinarily go through its official email system so that there is transparency and a record accessible to the organisation. "When a mail has to be sent to any organisation, we cannot send it through our personal mail ID if we want to send it officially. This is the same everywhere. Here, Poonam ji sends her personal mail ID to the organisations and asks them to send it to her. She gains no benefit from it but there is no transparency," the actor added.

The actor-singer had earlier spoken about why he decided to visit the protest site. Mishra, who visited the protest site on Saturday, also said he was moved after watching interviews with some of the students and seeing their situation. "I did not come to extend my support for any other reason. I watched interviews with some of the students. I saw the pain and suffering in their eyes, and I saw their tears. That was enough for me."

Mishra also spoke about his bond with young people and said he wanted to help the protesters in whatever way he could. He said support in the form of "food, tarpaulins" and financial help had already been provided.

The movie stands out as a highly emotional and memorable classic of 1990s Bollywood cinema, bringing together legendary superstar Rajesh Khanna, comedic icon Govinda, and the charming Juhi Chawla in pivotal roles.

Recalling the encounter, he described Khanna as "very decent and innocent" and remembered him asking, "Govind, why aren't you where you should be?"

Miss Universe India 2026: 52 finalists unwind at Sufi Night in Indore

The 52 finalists competing for the Miss Universe India 2026 title came together for a Sufi Night at Unwind Resort near Indore/Dewas in Madhya Pradesh on August 8 as part of their 10-day grooming and training programme ahead of the national finale.

The musical evening was organised to give the contestants an opportunity to unwind, enjoy live singing and bond amid an intensive pageantry schedule, according to National Director Nikhil Anand.

The contestants embraced the theme in traditional Indo-Western outfits and sarees.

Road to the Crown

The national pageant is being organised by the Glamanand Group, with the grand finale scheduled for August 23 at Zee Studios Jaipur, Rajasthan.

Reigning Miss Universe India Manika Vishwakarma will crown her successor at the end of the event.

Intensive Selection and Training

The 52 finalists were selected through regional state pageants across India, with additional candidates chosen through final and NRI auditions.

According to the organiser, auditions began in February, while between 8,000 and 9,000 aspirants were considered before the final group was selected.

The contestants have been undergoing training in communication, presentation, dance, rehearsals and other aspects of pageantry.

The organiser said rehearsals could increase to around 14 to 15 hours a day closer to the finale.

Contestant Voices and Aspirations

Pramiti Rana, Delhi

Delhi finalist Pramiti Rana described the experience as a learning journey.

"And with all these things, you don't just learn external things. You learn discipline, resilience, all these things from within," she said while speaking to the media.

Rana said her goal was clear, "The goal is to become Miss Universe India."

Representing Delhi, she added that the state has yet to have a Miss Universe India crown and said, "I am hoping I will change that."

She also credited her confidence, speaking skills, walk and discipline to her mentors, calling the pageant her first beauty pageant despite her previous modelling and cabin crew experience.

Umanga Kumawat, Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh representative Umanga Kumawat said her journey towards the competition began years ago.

"Sushmita Sen was always my inspiration. So, I always wanted to go to Miss Universe India and represent India at Miss Universe," she said.

Kumawat described the competition as "a very tough competition" but said contestants continue to grow throughout the preparation.

"So, now, growth is a journey. And we are very happy to be here," she said.

Annie Sharma, Wild Card Entry

Annie Sharma, who entered the competition through a wild card after finishing first runner-up in Delhi, said her aspirations extend beyond pageantry.

"I want to become an actor," she said, adding that her advocacy focuses on holistic well-being and encouraging people to pay attention to their health.

The Grand Finale and Beyond

Following the Indore programme, the contestants are scheduled to leave on August 11 for another phase in Jaipur, culminating in the August 23 finale.

On August 20, they are expected to participate in national costume, suits, evening gown and talent rounds.

The eventual winner will represent India at the 75th Miss Universe Pageant in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in November 2026.

Actor Govinda has opened up about the intense grief he experienced following the death of his mother, Nirmala Devi, revealing that he once entered the Narmada River believing he would "meet" her again. In a conversation with ANI, Govinda recalled being in "tremendous pain" after his mother's demise in 1996 and said the loss left him feeling that everything was over.

"I was in a lot of pain. I was in tremendous pain. At that point, I felt that everything was over; that was it," Govinda said. Nirmala Devi, a renowned Hindustani classical vocalist and actress, died on June 15, 1996, at the age of 69.

Govinda was extremely close to his mother and has often credited her spiritual influence with playing an important role in both his personal and professional life. Recalling the incident at the Narmada River, the actor said, "So, I was at the Narmada River, I thought I would go a little farther into the river and that I would meet my mother again. So, I went into the river."

When asked whether he was trying to commit suicide, Govinda replied, "Kind of. I was deeply attached to my mother. I was too much in love with her." He later explained that he did not view the incident simply in those terms. "That's what the world calls it. People use suicide type of words. We don't really have anything like that. Life never ends. It takes on new faces; It takes on new forms," he said.

A Turning Point and a New Perspective

Govinda recalled that a sadhu, whom he now reminisces as Ram Kundal, approached him and helped him come out of the river. "He called out to me and came toward me. I came out of the river and he asked "What happened, Govind?"" he said.

The actor said the experience eventually led him to reassess his life. "I realised, actually someone said to me this at that time that I was doing something wrong... And I learned a lesson, I realised that I have to live for my children," he said.

Govinda said it took him around 10 to 15 days to truly emerge from that state of mind, adding that he eventually felt there was "something else in this world" that he had to experience and that he needed to move forward. He also recalled feeling completely empty after his mother's death and said his perspective on films and stardom changed.

'Real Achievement Was Fulfilling Mother's Dreams'

"Films is just like toys for me. I shouldn't say this, I am saying it out of fear of God. Forgive me if I shouldn't be saying this, and if I am offending anyone... But I believe that films, acting, stardom, heroism, all of it, is a manifestation of God. Whatever we have received, we have received from God, and we are simply acting in it. We have seen all of this, and we were able to experience it."

For Govinda, he said, his biggest achievement was fulfilling the dreams his mother had for him. "But the real achievement for me was that I could serve my family and my mother. I could fulfil all the wishes she had imagined for me, what she had thought my son Govinda would achieve when he turned 21. That was her dream. And I was able to fulfill it. I saw true heroism in that part of my life. That is a very different way of looking at things," he said.

Following his arrest, Noorani was produced before the Borivali Holiday Court. Police sought his custody as part of their investigation, including efforts to recover and examine the alleged video and determine whether similar incidents may have occurred elsewhere.

The court subsequently sent Noorani to police custody until August 12.

Noorani's lawyer, Advocate Vikas Singh Goar, has rejected the allegations and maintained that the filmmaker has been falsely implicated. The defence has stressed that the allegations are yet to be established in court and that Noorani is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Dwayne Johnson has responded to the mixed reviews of Disney's live-action 'Moana', saying mixed critical reactions are simply part of the entertainment business while expressing pride in the film and its cultural representation.

Johnson on Mixed Reviews and Cultural Pride

The movie has earned USD 266 million globally since its July 10 premiere, according to Deadline. Despite the response, Johnson said what mattered was that "the culture really stood up" in the Polynesian-inspired story.

"Our first two reviews came out. I'll never forget it... They were amazing. I was like, wow," Johnson told People magazine, recalling the film's early reviews. He said the reviews then "went another way, as sometimes happens."

"That's just the way it goes because we're in this business," Johnson added.

Johnson, who received a Golden Globe nomination, returned as the demigod Maui in the live-action adaptation after first voicing the character in Disney's animated Moana a decade ago. The live-action film is directed by Thomas Kail and stars Catherina Laga'aia as Moana.

Box Office Performance and Disney's Outlook

Reflecting on the film's performance and reception, Johnson said the focus should extend beyond its opening weekend. "The challenge was, okay, let's remember, though, what's going to be beyond this opening weekend. Let's remember what's happening right now and the noise that's happening right now," he said, adding, "If you love it, great. If you don't, no problem."

The film's box office performance has also drawn attention from Disney. Inspiration from Mumbai's Local Trains

In a conversation with ANI, Govinda recalled how he drew inspiration from ordinary people he would see wearing bright and shiny clothes, particularly during his travels on Mumbai's local trains. "Chamkile kapde pehanna ek bayaan hai..ek signature hai...jab local train mein jaate the aese aese chamakdar kapde pehan kar aate the (kuch log)...ek lalak thi to vo jo chamkile kapde local train ke deekhe the maine kaha. Kabhi na kabhi to use karunga (Wearing flashy clothes is a statement... it's a signature. When we used to travel by local train, I would see people wearing those shiny, eye-catching clothes.. I remember thinking, "Someday, somehow, I'll wear clothes like these too."), " Govinda said, explaining the thought behind his flamboyant wardrobe.

The actor said such clothes were not merely about fashion but also a way for people to stand out and make their presence felt. "So, when a poor man doesn't have any space to show off, then he does something so that people look at him. So, he feels, not me, he feels that a person like us will wear such colorful clothes and show it to people and they will know that they are leaving a different type of print in the crowd," he said.

"Sometimes I used to get upset with him. I used to call him, and he would understand. Even now when my topic comes up, he starts crying. He is sincere. He is a good guy," Govinda said. He also revealed reaching out to David Dhawan after the filmmaker's latest outing, recalling, "Abhi jab unki film aane se pehle phone kiya tha. Mujhe laga unse mulaqat karni chahiye. Unhone release ke baad mujhe call kiya and kaha ki tu apni taklif se bahar nikal. (I called him before his film's release as I felt like I should meet him. He called me after the release and told me to get over my troubles)."

Govinda on working with Kader Khan

Further in the conversation, Govinda also spoke about another collaborator from the most memorable phase of his career, the legendary Kader Khan. Govinda and the late Kader Khan worked together in many films, with their comic timing becoming a major part of their entertainers. Reflecting on their working relationship, Govinda shared, "My dialogues, my chemistry... Everything was pre-programmed. It was because of Kadir Khan that I understood the pre-programming." The actor explained that Kader Khan would perform in a particular rhythm, and once Govinda understood his style, their chemistry evolved naturally. "He used to perform in the same tune. That was his performance. So it took some time, but when he came to know how I work, he fell in love with me. He started loving me a lot," Govinda fondly shared.
