Team India's senior fast bowler, Mohammed Siraj, took charge as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP - Group 1 Cadre) in the Telangana Police department in October 2024. The Telangana government offered him this post after the team's 2024 T20 World Cup victory, providing a special exemption in the eligibility rules.

KL Rahul took over captaincy duties after regular Test skipper Shubman Gill sustained a finger injury before the practice. Put into bowl first by Sri Lanka XI skipper Sonal Dinusha, Team India bowlers ground hard in the opening session and created several chances. In the morning session, the visitors took only one wicket, as the hosts posted a total of 139/1 in 29 overs.

India fought back strongly in the afternoon session, reducing Sri Lanka XI to 246/4 in 59.3 overs by picking up four wickets. Ravindra Jadeja, Gurnoor Brar, Kuldeep Yadav and Manav Suthar claimed a wicket each, but Rahul's costly dropped catch allowed one of the batters to make the most of the reprieve, denting India's momentum.

Ajinkya Rahane, who recently retired from his illustrious career across all formats, was asked about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Test ambitions, to which the former India Test captain urged caution, saying it was too early to talk about the youngster's future in the longest format as the pressure of international cricket is vastly different from the IPL.

“It is tough to say right now. I don't want to say anything and put pressure on that young kid. Because people are already talking a lot about him, it’s just two IPL seasons. What I’ve realised is that IPL and international cricket are completely different,” Rahane said.

“The pressure when you represent your country is enormous. Chasing 70 runs in IPL in 4, 5 overs easy. Chasing the same amount of runs in international cricket is different. So, let him just play his game, let him just grow and develop at his own pace,” he added.

Following his retirement from his illustrious career, Ajinkya Rahane recalled the toughest phase of his early international journey, revealing that he had to spend two years as the 12th man before finally making his much-anticipated Test debut in 2013.

"The first two years, when I entered the team for the first time in 2011. I had to wait 20 games for my Test debut, and I was there as a 12th man for two years. That was a challenging phase, but I learnt a lot from it. I had two choices: either to gain sympathy or try to improve myself,” Rahane said on his YouTube channel.

“There is nothing bad about being a 12th man or serving water or helping your teammates. I took it positively. I would look at everything, and because of that, I could play for a long time. Observing helped my attitude and mindset. It would be easy to gain sympathy, but I never expected that," he added.

When Ajinkya made his Test debut against Australia, receiving cap number 278 from Sachin Tendulkar in 2013, the likes of Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, Murali Vijay, MS Dhoni, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ishant Sharma were part of the squad, marking the beginning of an extraordinary chapter in Indian Test cricket.

But after talking to some senior players and over time, I realised it will happen when it has to happen. You do whatever is in your control. In his Test career, Ajinkya Rahane has amassed 5077 runs, including 12 centuries and 26 fifties, at an average of 38.46 in 85 matches. In international cricket, the veteran Indian batter has amassed 8414 runs, including 15 centuries and 51 fifties, at an average of 35.95 in 195 matches.

The former fast bowler has reignited the debate around the famous toss incident from the historic 2001 Eden Gardens Test. During that memorable match between India and Australia, then-captain Sourav Ganguly had made his Australian counterpart, Steve Waugh, wait for a while at the toss. At a recent event in Chennai, Srinath stated clearly that if he had been the match referee, he would have banned Ganguly for a few matches for this act.

What Srinath said about Ganguly's toss controversy

In Srinath's own words, "If I were the match referee, I would have banned Sourav for a couple of matches." Ganguly himself later clarified that the delay was because he couldn't find his blazer. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Aakash stated that Bhuvneshwar’s lack of regular Ranji Trophy and limited 50-over domestic cricket is the biggest hurdle, as IPL performances alone are insufficient to prove readiness for ODI World Cup demands.

“One thing goes against Bhuvi. I love him to bits, and I want him to play for India again, but when you don't play Ranji, your workload becomes limited. There are a handful of matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy,” the former India Test opener said.

“In ODI cricket, you have to bowl 10 overs and field for 50 overs in a match. It's a lot of workload, and you cannot pick someone for a 50-over World Cup based solely on him bowling four overs in the IPL," he added.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s last first-class appearance was in a Ranji Trophy match between Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai in 2024, and his last List A match was against Andhra in 2023, while his last appearance in an ODI for India dates back to January 2022 against South Africa. The gap between his appearances in longer formats has raised concerns over his workload, hurting his chances of an ODI comeback.

Further speaking on Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s chances of making an India ODI comeback, Aakash Chopra stressed that selectors must give him at least a year of consistent 50-over cricket beforehand rather than rushing him straight into a global tournament, adding that selecting him solely based on his IPL performances would be a mistake despite his proven quality and experience.

“It's not easy in a tournament like the World Cup where you have to keep playing continuously. Not only the World Cup, but you will have to be a part of every ODI game from a year earlier. You will have to start playing him from now on." Chopra said.

“He is not a bad option, but it will be a mistake unless we give him at least one year to get ready. If you pick someone for the 50-over World Cup based on him bowling four overs in the two months of the IPL and a month of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, no matter how good that person is, it will be wrong," he added.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was part of the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cups, picking 11 wickets at an average of 26.18 and an economy rate of 5.08 in seven matches. In his ODI career, the veteran Indian pacer has picked up 141 wickets, including 4 four-wicket hauls and a fifer, at an average of 35.11 and an economy rate of 5.08 in 121 matches.

Virat Kohli's captaincy changed India's fortunes in Sri Lanka completely. Under his leadership, India won the series 2-1 in 2015. Then, in 2017, Kohli's team whitewashed Sri Lanka 3-0 on their own home ground. That 2017 tour was the last time India played a Test series there.

Sudharsan sustained a toe injury during India A’s two-match unofficial Test series against Sri Lanka A, where he scored 332 runs, including two centuries, at an average of 166.00 in four innings.

Team India management was hoping for his arrival in Sri Lanka before the Test series opener against Sri Lanka at Galle International Stadium, but things are running out for the young left-hander to join the squad in time.

Sai Sudharsan Ruled Out of Sri Lanka Tests

As Team India’s three-day practice match is underway in Colombo, Sai Sudharsan was undergoing rehabilitation at BCCI CoE in Bengaluru. Earlier, it was reported that the Tamil Nadu batter would begin batting at full intensity in the nets before the medical team takes a call on his availability for the Sri Lanka Tests.

However, the medical team was not willing to rush his return, advising that the healing process needs more time before he can safely resume competitive red-ball cricket. Since the first Test in Galle is just a week away, Sudharsan is unlikely to get any necessary clearances from the medical team to feature in a crucial series.

“Sai Sudharsan has been ruled out of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. Doctors have advised more time for biological healing. Significant improvement, but not yet sufficient for a safe return to Test cricket," as per the latest update from Sports Science as quoted by the Press Trust of India (PTI).

In the absence of Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal batted at the No.3 position in the ongoing three-day match practice against Sri Lanka XI and played an innings of 103 off 121 balls, including 14 fours, in the first innings, strengthening his case to replace Sudharsan in the upcoming Test series.

Padikkal was already a backup option in case the Tamil Nadu batter was ruled out of the Sri Lanka Tests, and his fluent century in the practice match has all but sealed his position in the playing XI for the opening match of the two-match series in Galle.

Sudharsan’s Likely Replacements Revealed

As Sai Sudharsan is all but ruled out of the Sri Lanka Test series, the selectors and team management will have to look for an alternative batter to be added to the squad as a replacement before the Test series opener at the Galle International Stadium.

According to the report by The Times of India (TOI), Sarfaraz Khan and Shaik Rasheed are likely contenders to replace Sudharsan in the squad. Sarfaraz’s last appearance in a Test match was during the home series against New Zealand in November 2024, after which Mumbai’s prolific middle-order batter has been aiming to force his way back into the senior red-ball setup.

Sarfaraz was part of the India squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, but he didn’t get a single match throughout the series. Despite playing a strong innings of 92 for India A against England Lions in Canterbury and impressing in his Intra-squad matches, Sarfaraz Khan has continued to find himself on the sidelines of the senior national team.

“I don't know the exact stats, but I've played around 170 or 180 first-class games, and I might have opened in ten of them, that probably suggests I'm not an opening batter, a true opening batter, in terms of what Australian cricket is known for,” Head said.

“Test cricket fans are actual cricket lovers. What we built apart from the last two years, when new players came in Test cricket, I still feel Test cricket needs 7-8 senior players and 2-3 younger players. What we are seeing now is that all the players are actually new. There’s hardly any senior cricketer left. So, Test cricket needs that,” the former India captain said.

“Frankly, yes, I do (fear for Test cricket). Because the way it is going, we all want Test cricket to survive, to be there, India, England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa. These 4-5 teams especially. Because what I have seen in the last 2-3 years, you need to keep and respect the senior players, especially because with the Indian team, all the senior players going out together at once, that’s been the issue,” he added.

'Fake News and Trolling': Irfan Pathan Recalls Fabricated Interview Incident with Babar Azam

Former India all-rounder turned commentator Irfan Pathan recalled a viral incident from the 2023 ODI World Cup where a fabricated news story claimed Pakistan captain Babar Azam had refused to be interviewed by him.

Pakistan travelled to India for the ODI World Cup for the first time since 2016, marking a highly anticipated return for the national team amidst intense media attention and massive public interest across the country. However, the Men in Green, led by Babar Azam, suffered an early exit from the tournament, failing to qualify for the semi-finals.

Babar had a good outing in the marquee event, amassing 320 runs, including 4 fifties, at an average of 40.00 in 9 matches, with his best performance coming against Afghanistan, scoring 74 in Chennai. However, Pakistan suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Afghanistan, marking one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.

‘The Trolling and Fake Attribution Happen Every Day’

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan, who was part of the commentary panel for the 2023 ODI World Cup, recalled how misinformation and social media manipulation can rapidly spiral out of control during major global sports events.

Speaking on JioHotstar, Irfan revealed that a fake story was pushed by a Pakistani media outlet, claiming that Babar Azam was approached by him for an interview only to be turned away because of alleged critical remarks.

“The media in our neighbouring country once ran a story claiming that I had gone to interview Babar Azam, and that he refused because, according to him, 'He trolls our country, so I won't give him an interview.' It was a complete lie,” Pathan said.

“Someone had photoshopped my face onto a picture," he added.

Irfan Pathan was referring to a fabricated story and the photoshopped image that falsely portrayed him as having approached Babar Azam for an interview during the 2023 ODI World Cup. The Pakistani media ran the news as if it were a genuine incident by using a digitally altered photograph to make the claim appear credible.

Irfan Pathan Clarified the Fake Image

Further speaking on the fake Babar Azam interview incident, Irfan Pathan clarified that the Pakistani media used a Bangladeshi reporter who had actually approached the Pakistan captain on the field, digitally pasting Pathan's face over his body to manufacture the controversy. The former India all-rounder further added that he doesn’t feel the need to constantly respond to every piece of fake news because it would make it impossible to live a normal life.

“The person in the original image was a young Bangladeshi reporter who had gone to the ground for the first time and was refused an interview. They literally put my face on his body and spread the story. It got over a million views, and people believed it was me." Irfan said.

“This happens every day, but I don't respond. Every day, some lie is told in our name or about some player. If you keep responding to everyone, you won't be able to live your life," he added.

Meanwhile, Babar Azam stepped down from captaincy duties after Pakistan’s early exit from the ODI World Cup 2023, before he was reinstated as a white-ball captain for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Then, Babar resigned from the white-ball leadership role for a second time in October 2024 and focused on his personal batting performance.

Now, Babar Azam was reappointed as Test captain and has Pakistan currently in the two-match series against the West Indies, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin revealed his candid thoughts on his relationship with Sanjay Manjrekar, admitting that a particularly harsh critique from the former commentator left him deeply hurt and angry, leading to years of silence between the two.

Manjrekar has often sparked controversy for his opinions and remarks, which would frequently put him at odds with players and fans alike. The most famous was his controversial remark against veteran Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who was called a ‘bits-and-pieces cricketer’ during the 2019 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

The former India batter even made remarks against Virat Kohli, especially during the latter's lean patch, questioning his form and later claiming that the batting great was ‘very sensitive to criticism’ and often became cold towards him after hearing negative comments.

Ashwin Recalls Sanjay Manjrekar

Just like Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin too had his fair share of run-ins with Manjrekar's analytical style, noting how the public commentary profoundly impacted how players felt about experts in the box.

Speaking on JioHotstar's 'Cheeky Singles', the 39-year-old revealed that Manjrekar's criticism after his first tour of Australia left him deeply hurt and angry, admitting that he avoided speaking to former India batter turned commentator for several years before eventually moving on from the incident.

“I had messaged Sanjay Manjrekar once. After my first Australia tour, he had written a long article, and I read it completely while returning,” Ashwin said.

“After reading, I got angry; getting angry is one thing, but I felt very bad. I let it go. I used to not talk a lot to him either. The next four years, I worked a lot, as I was not a gifted athlete,” he added.

Ravichandran Ashwin had his first Test tour of Australia during the 2011-12 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he picked nine wickets at an average of 62.77 and an economy rate of 3.36 in five innings across three matches. He was India’s third-highest wicket-taker in the series, but the performance did little to silence the critics who questioned his ability to thrive in overseas conditions.

How Ashwin Finally Reconciled With Manjrekar?

Further speaking on the same show, Ashwin shared how their equation eventually changed over time as he focused heavily on his game, letting his performance on the field answer the critics.

“Then in 2015, he wrote another article saying he was bowling very well. Then I asked for his number and messaged him that your article back then changed my life,” the former India off-spinner said.

“I always look at whether there is something to learn from criticism," he added.

Ravichandran Ashwin retired from international cricket after the third Test between Australia and India ended in a draw at the Gabba. Ashwin bid adieu to his illustrious international career as the second-highest wicket-taker for India in Tests, with 537 wickets, including 37 fifers and 8 10-wicket hauls, at an average of 24.00 and an economy rate of 2.83 in 106 matches.

Overall, Ashwin finished as the second-highest wicket-taker for India in international cricket, with 765 wickets at an average of 25.80 and an economy rate of 3.38 in 287 matches.
