Speaking after Team India’s humiliating T20I series defeat to England, Ravichandran Ashwin gave his perspective on the selection controversy. Speaking on his YouTube channel, ‘Ash Ki Baat’, the 39-year-old acknowledged the fact that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is an ‘incredible player’, but suggested that the timing of his debut might have been influenced by social media pressure.

“I'm still telling you, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is an incredible player. If I were the selector, I would have also picked him. But let him take his time. This is called an internship, right? I sometimes thought that I should have played in this era. When I went for the Test tour, a lot of people on social media said Ashwin had to play,” Ashwin said.

“How can you drop him? But I still didn't play on the team. If I were out, they would keep me out because team management knows what the team needs. You are saying that you can pick teams by succumbing to social media pressure?" he added.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was expected to make his India debut in the Ireland T20I series, but the team management persisted with the opening combination of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson for the two matches against Ireland. “There have been times where I could have played, but it was a 50-50 decision, and there were times where it was the right decision. I came to England with very good form, but the coach and captain spoke to me, and then I felt maybe they were doing it for the combination they wanted," he explained.

“It is the team's decision. The team management is like a temple. If the outside noise is allowed to enter the team, whose fault is it? How can outside pressure disturb the team? If the outside pressure is disturbing the team management, then think about the players,” he added.

“Fleming really understood what ticked Dhoni, and Dhoni understood that Fleming was a great lieutenant, and that partnership carried on for such a long time. I would say it was about time Chennai Super Kings looked beyond,” Ashwin told ESPN CricInfo.

“If Dhoni is willing to do that, there is no better person that Chennai Super Kings can go after. f not, they need to find someone who will be able to operate independently and take accountability for his or her own actions,” he added.

When Tendo (his nickname) was brought on board, he was promised the fielding coach's job," the BCCI source said.

“Dilip was supposed to be removed along with Abhishek Nayar (assistant coach), Soham Desai (S&C coach) and Arun Kanade (masseur) after the 2025 Champions Trophy. However, for Dilip, a strong recommendation came from a senior player, and Dilip got a one-year extension, and Tendo actually didn't have any specific domain role. He is a fantastic coach, who hasn't been used because Dilip is there," the senior source added.

Former Ministry of Home Affairs Under Secretary, RVS Mani, made explosive yet highly controversial allegations, claiming that former Pakistan pacers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif routinely smuggled drugs into India during their visits for the bilateral series in the country.

Back in 2006, Akhtar and Asif were found guilty of doping in a separate incident, which led to a suspension by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) just ahead of the 2006 Champions Trophy. The former pacers were found to have tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid nandrolone. Shoaib Akhtar was banned for two years, while Mohammad Asif was debarred from professional cricket for a year.

However, their ban was overturned by a review tribunal, which ruled that the players were unaware they were consuming a prohibited substance. Despite the ban being lifted, Akhtar and Asif were immensely scrutinized for their off-field conduct and disciplinary history throughout their careers.

Former Ministry of Home Affairs official RVS Mani, who served as an Under Secretary in the Ministry from 2006 to 2010, claimed that the Pakistan High Commissioner sent back Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif, who admitted to carrying drugs, adding that this admission occurred after security protocols were tightened.

“We have reported a case of Pakistani cricketers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammed Asif, who were sent back by the Pakistani High Commissioner after self-confessing that they were carrying drugs. That is what the ruse is. So that is the entire background. Whenever Pakistani teams and delegations came to India, they trafficked drugs here.” Mani told the ANI.

“It's an official policy of Pakistan to push drugs into India. They're well-known people. They're high-profile people. So were the other people in the Pakistan team whose names might not have been named, but the entire team consists of that, and they used to do it,” he added.
