Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has come under heavy scrutiny after his team’s five-wicket defeat in the IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai on Friday, April 3. This was the second consecutive win of the season for CSK, after having previously lost to the Rajasthan Royals in their opening match in Guwahati.

Despite posting a solid total of 209/5, the CSK failed to defend it at their fortress as PBKS chased down the 210-run target in 18.4 overs. Shreyas Iyer’s captain knock of 50 off 29 balls and vital contributions from Prabhsimran Singh (43), Priyansh Arya (33), and Cooper Connolly (36) helped Punjab Kings reach the target with 8 balls to spare.

Matt Henry (2/54), Anshul Kamboj (2/43), and Rahul Chahar (4/46) together conceded 143 runs between them, failing to put enough pressure on the PBKS batters and allowing the visitors to chase down the target comfortably.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Captaincy Under Scrutiny

Ruturaj Gaikwad was handed over captaincy duties despite a mixed stint last season, where the Chennai Super Kings won just one match out of five innings before he was ruled remainder of the tournament due to an elbow, and MS Dhoni returned to the leadership role. However, things haven’t gone as expected in the opening matches of the IPL 2026.

In the opener against the Rajasthan Royals, CSK’s bowling was handled comfortably by the Royals’ attack as they bowled the five-time IPL champions out for just 127 and chased the modest total with ease, highlighting their early struggles in the bowling unit and setting a tone for a concerning start to the season.

Even after Noor Ahmad and Rahul Chahar struggled to take a wicket, Ruturaj didn’t introduce Prashant into the attack, especially in the middle overs, instead relying on pacers Matt Henry and Anshul Kamboj to stem the flow of runs, a strategy that backfired as PBKS capitalized on the predictable bowling and comfortably chased down the target.

Chahal has become the latest victim of the false video, which falsely showed him in a compromising situation with two women. Since the AI has become increasingly sophisticated, with the internet and social media platforms making it easy to manipulate videos and false content can spread rapidly, which can eventually lead to serious reputational damage.

In recent times, AI-generated and deepfakes have increasingly targeted public figures, raising concerns about misinformation, cyberbullying, and the need for stricter laws and regulations to protect reputations and prevent misuse.

X Removed Fake Chahal’s AI Video

The fake AI-generated video of Yuzvendra Chahal with two women sparked outrage on social media, with many demanding action against the user for spreading false content and causing reputational harm.

After a massive outrage over the AI video of the Punjab Kings spinner, X took action by immediately taking down the clip, removing the false content from the platform, following widespread public backlash.

“Due to local regulations, this content is restricted on X,” the platform stated.

Yuzvendra Chahal has not been part of India’s white-ball setup since his last appearance in a T20I against the West Indies in 2023. Chahal was part of the India squad that won the T20 World Cup in 2024, but didn’t get a single game.

On returning to the RCB setup after a difficult phase, Jitesh said the environment helped him reset. "When I walked back into Chinnaswamy and saw the red and blue again, I felt reborn. Being back in that environment made me feel like myself again," Sharma noted.

Jitesh credited Dinesh Karthik for helping shape his growth over the past year, "A lot of the credit for my growth goes to DK 'anna'. He helped me understand my game better, use my strengths properly and improve mentally."

He added that Karthik also encouraged him to step away briefly and recover emotionally, "DK asked me to take a break, put the bat away for a while and spend time with my family and friends. That helped me reset."

The opening game of IPL 2026 for CSK saw as many as five debutants for the side, including Sarfaraz Khan and Rs 14.20 crore big-buy wicketkeeper batter Kartik Sharma. This was their first-ever game in history in which neither MS Dhoni nor Suresh Raina, two of CSK's biggest stalwarts, featured in the playing XI. Raina called it quits from all formats of the game back in 2022, and Dhoni is out due to a calf strain for two weeks.

'Allow them to make mistakes'

Speaking ahead of the team's next match, Gaikwad was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo that the team did not have the best of the squads last year, and the current team is also young, which needs to be allowed to make mistakes and express themselves. CSK has moved on from long-term stars Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Suresh Raina and Dwayne Bravo over the last few years, investing in new talents like Dewald Brevis, Urvil Patel, Ayush Mhatre etc and getting Sanju Samson to the side as a part of the trade with Rajasthan Royals, giving them Jadeja and Sam Curran in return.

So, you have to allow them to make mistakes. You have to allow them to express themselves. You have to make sure that they are in a good headspace," he added.

Managing pressure and expectations

CSK's rookies failed in their first game, with Mhatre, Kartik and Sarfaraz failing with the bat and Samson, the T20 World Cup 'Player of the Tournament', scoring in single digits in his first outing for Men in Yellow. They batted in tough conditions at Guwahati, and the pitch had spent a lot of time under covers. The CSK skipper was not too fussed about the failure and wanted the youngsters to embrace the pressure which comes with the competition, noting that it marks the start of career for many players.

"I mean, [there is pressure to perform] from families, from the media, from team members, everyone [in the IPL]," Gaikwad said. "So to cope with that and to just get into that IPL performance mode, sometimes it takes time."

"You try and share your experience with them, [but] it should not make them cautious. It should not make them go into a negative frame of mind. Put to field first, SRH posted 226/8, with Heinrich Klaasen (52 in 35 balls, with four boundaries and a six), Abhishek Sharma (48 in 21 balls, with four boundaries and four sixes) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (39 in 24 balls, with four boundaries and a six). KKR started off chasing fine with Finn Allen (28 in seven balls, with three sixes and two sixes) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (52 in 29 balls, with six fours and two sixes), but fizzled out quickly to bundle out for 161 in 16 overs.

KKR's run chase fizzles after strong start

During the run-chase of 227 runs, Finn Allen started by smoking David Payne for 25 runs in the first over itself, with three fours and two sixes. However, after a boundary against Harsh Dubey, he fell to the spinner for a seven-ball 28 (with four boundaries and two sixes). KKR was 29/1 in 1.3 overs.

Angkrish Raghuvanshi collected runs in a free-flowing manner against spin, smashing Abhishek Sharma for two sixes and Harsh Dubey for a four. KKR reached the 50-run mark in 3.2 overs.

The right-hander got two successive fours against Jaydev Unadkat in the fifth over.

KKR's happy run ended with an absolutely nothing shot from skipper Ajinkya Rahane, who was dismissed by Unadkat with a catch from Eshan Malinga. KKR was 67/2 in five overs.

KKR's power play ended on a poor note with Cameron Green involved in a very unfortunate run-out for just two runs. KKR ended at 74/3 in six overs.

Raghuvanshi was joined by Rinku Singh, and the duo rotated strike well with a few boundaries in between, reaching the 100-run mark in 8.5 overs.

Raghuvanshi brought up his back-to-back fifties in 27 balls, with six fours and two sixes.

Halfway through, KKR was 110/3, with Raghuvanshi (51*) and Rinku (16*) unbeaten.

The 46-run stand between the duo ended, with Raghuvanshi run out for a 29-ball 52. KKR was 120/4 in 11 overs.

After Raghuvanshi's wicket, KKR lost their way, losing Anukul Roy (0), Rinku Singh (35 in 25 balls, with four boundaries and a six), Sunil Narine (12 in four balls) and Ramandeep Singh (10 in nine balls), sinking to 159/8 in 15 overs.

KKR's downfall continued, with Kartik Tyagi gone for five runs to Unadkat. KKR was 161/9 in 15.5 overs.

Varun Chakravarthy was the last one to fall to Unadkat (3/21) as KKR was all out for 161 runs in 16 overs. Eshan (2/14) and Nitish (2/17) were among the wickets for SRH as well.

Earlier, a brilliant half-century from Heinrich Klaasen and fiery knocks of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma helped Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) post a daunting total of 226/8.

After being asked bat, Sunrisers Hyderabad openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma combined to hammer 22/0 in two overs.

During the third over of Vaibhav Arora, both Hyderabad openers slammed 21 runs as their side's total reached 43/0 in three overs.

During the fifth over, Abhishek Sharma blasted 25 runs off spinner Varun Chakaravarthy as Hyderabad scored 71/0 in five overs. 25 runs is the joint-most Chakaravarthy conceded in an over in T20s alongside as many for KXIP (Now Punjab Kings) vs KKR in 2019.

After the end of the first power play, SRH made 84/1. According to CricViz, this is SRH's third-highest score in the Powerplay when setting a total in IPL history after posting 124/0 against Delhi Capitals in 2024 and 94/1 against Rajasthan Royals in the 2025 edition.

After the end of the seventh over, Hyderabad scored 98/1.

During the ninth over, speedster Blessing Muzarabani took two wickets to stop the run flow of SRH. The right-arm pacer first removed captain Ishan Kishan (14 off nine balls, with three fours) and then took the crucial wicket of Abhishek Sharma, who scored 48 off 21 balls, with four towering sixes and four fours. "Harsh has been doing well for his domestic team as well. Now, he is keeping his nerves down, as you said. He has been calm in tough situations as well. But I would love to talk about Shivang (0/41 in four overs) today because, you know, coming here, playing against KKR, not so big ground, good wicket in the second innings, and, you know, he bowled exceptionally well, I feel. Kishan said that the team needs to work on their fielding. "We cannot be giving 20-odd runs in each game. So, yeah, we will have to work there because, you know, in IPL, 20 or 10 runs, it makes a huge difference in a T20 game. So, yeah, we will work on it as a team," he signed off.

"That was an incredibly difficult time," George said. While Dhoni could not visit in person, he remained closely connected. Through his friend Robin, he regularly enquired about Thomas's health, tracking his recovery, consulting updates from doctors, and ensuring help reached when it was needed most.

According to the family, Robin bore the entire cost of the treatment. "Had that help not come at the right time, Thomas might not be with us today," George added.

Saving a Livelihood

The bond went beyond medical support. At one point, the tea stall faced the threat of demolition by authorities, putting Thomas's only source of livelihood at risk. Once again, help arrived. Robin reached out to Dhoni, who intervened with the railway officials. The stall was saved, and financial assistance was provided to rebuild it.

An Enduring Legacy

This was the second time Rishabh Pant opened the innings in his IPL career, with his last being in the IPL 2025 match against the Gujarat Titans.

Following the LSG’s defeat to DC in Lucknow, skipper Rishabh Pant was asked whether he would open throughout the season. In response, Pant stated that it was still a ‘50-50’ call, indicating the uncertainty over whether he would continue opening the innings throughout the season.

“I request you with folded hands, please open in every match. Justin Langer, or whoever is there in the LSG team management, should go and tell Rishabh Pant to go out there and play freely in the powerplay. Go and play the entire 14 games as an opener," he added.

Rishabh Pant had a moderate outing in the last IPL season, amassing 269 runs, including a century and a fifty, at an average of 24.45 and a strike rate of 133.17 in 14 matches.
