The Durham opener Emilio Gay has officially released his dream of representing England at the international level in the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s in London on Thursday, June 4.

England and New Zealand have resumed their World Test Championship (WTC) campaign with the first Test of the three-match series at Lord’s, marking a crucial start for both sides in the 2025–27 cycle. Opting to bowl first, the Kiwis dismantled the hosts’ batting line-up, reducing them to 118/8 in 33.1 overs before the rain forced an early Tea break on the opening day of the Lord’s Test.

Apart from Harry Brook, who scored 56 off 71 balls, Apart from Harry Brook, who scored 56 off 71 balls, the English batting lineup struggled significantly against the New Zealand pace attack, led by Kyle Jamieson, alongside Nathan Smith and William O'Rourke.

Also Read: KS Bharat announces retirement from international cricket with pride

Emilio Gay Gets England Cap

As England’s opening batter walked out to the middle at the Home of Cricket, Emilio Gay received the Three Lions cap from the former captain and ace batter Alastair Cook during the team’s huddle. He was presented with Test Cap number 720, a significant milestone that marked the fulfillment of his lifelong ambition to represent his country at the highest level.

Interestingly, Gay studied at the same school where former England captain Alastair Cook was also an alumnus: Bedford School. The shared history of two left-handed openers added a layer of poignancy to the morning’s proceedings at Lord’s. Bedford School director, Gary Steer, expressed his joy over an alumnus making his England debut.

“Everyone at the school is really pleased that he's gone on and been selected for England. He was a really easy lad to work with because he just loved playing the game, and he took everything on board,” Steer told BBC.

“We're pretty confident that Emilio will go on and do well in his own right because he's got all the credentials to do well at the Test level,” he added.

Your first ball in Test Cricket... You picture it...You dream of it...Then you hit it for four pic.twitter.com/0raMPgYqZ8

— England Cricket (@englandcricket) June 4, 2026

Emilio Gay walked out to bat alongside his batting partner Ben Duckett, but his debut Test innings ended before it took off as he was dismissed for 8 off 14 balls, including 2 fours, by Kyle Jamieson. His stay at the crease was brief but promising, as he provided a glimpse of his attacking intent by dispatching a full toss from Kyle Jamieson to the boundary off the very first ball he faced in Test cricket.

Tracing the Journey of Emilio Gay

Emilio Gay was born in Bedford, England, in 2000, and comes from a family with a rich and diverse heritage. His father’s family hails from the Caribbean island of Grenada, while his mother’s roots are in Italy. Gay began his cricketing journey with Northamptonshire, where he played youth-level cricket before earning his first professional contract in 2019.

In 2024, the 26-year-old moved to Durham, where he signed a three-year contract to pursue his goal of representing England in international cricket. Gay had a breakthrough County Championship season that year, as he breached the 1000-run mark, amassing 1019 runs, including 2 centuries and 5 fifties, at an average of 44.30 in 12 matches.

Gay played two matches for Durham on loan and scored 100 runs, including a fifty, at an average of 33.33 in 3 matches, and played the remaining 10 matches of the 2024 County season for his parent club, Northamptonshire, to complete his breakthrough campaign, amassing 919 runs, including his career-best 261 against Middlesex, at an average of 57.43 in 10 matches.
    View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Durham Cricket (@durhamcricket_)

In the ongoing County Championship season, Emilio Gay has had an impressive outing, amassing 552 runs, including 3 centuries and a fifty, at an average of 78.85 in six matches. His performance left the England selectors impressed and added him to the squad for the Test series against New Zealand as a replacement for Zak Crawley.

At Lord’s, Gay experienced a bittersweet start to his Test career, as he was dismissed for just 8 runs by Kyle Jamieson. However, his ability to strike his very first delivery in Test cricket for a boundary served as an encouraging sign of the attacking intent and composure he brings to the top of the order for England.

Emilio Gay Played for Italy in T20Is

Before making his debut for England, Emilio Gay represented Italy at the 2025 T20 World Cup Qualifiers and played three T20Is. Since Gay possesses Italian heritage through his mother’s side, he was eligible to represent the country in international cricket, allowing him to gain valuable experience at the international level.

Gay was offered an opportunity to play for West Indies after Cricket West Indies reached out to him, just 8-10 months before his England Test debut, to gauge his interest in representing them, but he politely declined the invitation to maintain his focus on pursuing his lifelong ambition of playing for England.

His long ambition to represent England in international cricket has finally been fulfilled, as Emilio Gay received the Three Lions cap from a fellow Bedford School alumnus and legendary former England captain, Sir Alastair Cook.

In his first-class career, Emilio Gay has amassed 13 centuries and 18 fifties, at an average of 39.84 in 73 matches.

Also Read: Shreyas Iyer to replace Suryakumar Yadav as India's T20I captain

Mumbai: With the IPL season over, the biggest question in the cricket world is who will be India's next T20 captain. Current skipper Suryakumar Yadav's recent poor form is a major threat to his position, according to reports. Initially, Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson were the top names being discussed as replacements. However, the situation seems to have changed after the IPL.

Sanju Samson had a great run with the bat for Chennai Super Kings, even scoring two centuries to become their top scorer. But his captaincy chances might have taken a hit because the team failed to qualify for the playoffs. His inability to perform as an opener in crucial matches is also seen as a major setback.

Three Contenders for India's T20I Captaincy

Now, new names are doing the rounds. Shubman Gill, who led Gujarat to the IPL final, is once again a strong contender. Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan are also in the mix. Sanju's name first came up for captaincy after his fantastic performance in the T20 World Cup, where he was named 'Player of the Tournament'. After the World Cup, Suryakumar's form dipped in the IPL, while Sanju, after a slow start, hit two centuries for Chennai. This made many fans believe he was the next captain.

However, a report in the ‘Times of India’ suggests that the selectors and top BCCI officials are still worried about Sanju's 'inconsistency' in the T20 format. Axar Patel was the vice-captain under Suryakumar in the World Cup. But his poor showing in the IPL, both as a player and as the captain of Delhi Capitals, means he is unlikely to be considered for the top job.

The selectors are now actively considering Ishan Kishan, who initially led Hyderabad, Shubman Gill, who took Gujarat to the final, and Shreyas Iyer, the Punjab captain who had a brilliant start to the IPL. The Times of India report adds that while Sanju has the advantage of his World Cup performance, his career-long inconsistency has not fully convinced the key decision-makers at the BCCI. This season for Chennai Super Kings, Sanju scored 477 runs at an average of 43.36 and a strike rate of 165.63.

Also Read: IND vs AFG: Will Auqib Nabi Make India Debut?

Ahead of the ODI series against Afghanistan, Team India has reportedly been dealt a major blow, with former captain and star batter Virat Kohli unlikely to participate in the upcoming matches after reportedly sustaining a hamstring injury.

Kohli was recently part of the IPL 2026 final, where he scored an unbeaten 75 off 42 balls to help Royal Challengers Bengaluru successfully defend their maiden IPL title by defeating the Gujarat Titans. The veteran batter enjoyed a remarkably consistent season, anchoring the innings while maintaining a blistering strike rate that proved pivotal in guiding Bengaluru to a successful title defence.

Despite returning to T20 cricket after a year-long absence, Kohli showed no signs of rust. Instead, he looked every bit the seasoned professional, seamlessly adapting to the competitive intensity of the tournament.

Also Read: Rohit Sharma doubtful for Afghanistan ODI series over fitness concerns

Kohli Unavailable for the Afghanistan ODI Series

Team India will take on Afghanistan in a three-match ODI series from June 13 to 20. However, ahead of the ODI leg of the home series, the Men in Blue have reportedly suffered a major setback, as star batter Virat Kohli is unlikely to be available after reportedly playing through a hamstring injury during the IPL 2026 final in Ahmedabad.

Kohli had already been named in the ODI squad, which was announced on May 19 alongside the squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan. Now, the former India captain’s availability has been ruled out of the ODI series, dealing a significant blow to the team’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup cycle.

According to the report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), the BCCI source confirmed that Kohli has been ruled out of the ODI series due to a hamstring injury.

“He is out of the ODI series due to a hamstring injury," a BCCI source told the PTI.

VIRAT KOHLI RULED OUT OF THE ODI SERIES AGAINST AFGHANISTAN. - Virat has been ruled out due to hamstring injury. (PTI). pic.twitter.com/GrDisu31hd

— Mufaddal Vohra (@mufaddal_vohra) June 4, 2026

Virat Kohli’s injury came at the wrong time as he was looking to carry on his sensational form from the recently concluded IPL 2026 into the Afghanistan ODI series, where he was widely expected to anchor the middle order and provide the tactical stability required for the upcoming long-form challenges of the international season.

Who Will Replace Virat Kohli in the ODI Squad?

The BCCI has yet to provide an official statement regarding a formal replacement for Virat Kohli in the ODI squad. However, reports suggest that selectors are already exploring options to fill the vacancy. With Kohli ruled out and uncertainty surrounding Rohit Sharma's fitness, the team management is considering late additions to bolster the batting order.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored a century in the South Africa ODI series last December, could be the frontrunner to fill the gap. His inclusion would not only provide a like-for-like replacement in terms of batting intent but also offer management a chance to blood a young talent in a high-pressure environment as they begin the transition toward the 2027 ODI World Cup cycle.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was added to the India A squad for the ODI tri-series against Sri Lanka and Afghanistan as a replacement for injured Riyan Parag, might be considered as Kohli’s replacement if the selectors opt for a more traditional, technique-oriented batter to solidify the middle order. Gaikwad scored his maiden ODI century against South Africa last year.

Another strong contender for Virat Kohli’s replacement is Devdutt Padikkal. The Karnataka batter’s exceptional performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he aggregated 725 runs, including 4 centuries and 2 fifties, at an average of 90.62 in 9 matches, could make him the primary candidate to step in as a top-order stabilizer, given his prolific recent domestic form. Padikkal is already part of the India squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan.

Sai Sudharsan could also be considered as Virat Kohli’s replacement if the team management wanted someone who is technically sound and capable of anchoring the innings at number three or four. He is also part of India squad for the One-Off Test against Afghanistan.

Also Read: Mukul Choudhary’s Inspiring Path: Sold House in Debt, Now IPL Star Pays Off Family Burdens

Now, former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has made a huge prediction about this young talent's future.
In an interview with Wisden, Lalit Modi made a bold claim about Vaibhav. He said Vaibhav will be the first player to score a double century in T20 cricket. Modi also predicted that the young boy will become a bigger superstar than any Hollywood or Bollywood actor.
"I am waiting for that day. He will score 200 in T20," Lalit Modi said. "I have only one thing to tell him, don't let the money get to your head. You will be the number one superstar on this planet; a bigger star than any Hollywood or Bollywood star."

Also Read: IPL 2026: RR's Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on lessons learned, 700-run goal
In the 19th IPL season, Vaibhav Suryavanshi hit one century and was dismissed in the 90s three times. He also bagged the Emerging Player of the Year, Orange Cap, Super Striker of the Tournament (winning a Tata Sierra car), and the Most Valuable Player awards.Lalit Modi believes the trend of young players prioritising franchise and domestic leagues over international cricket is a good thing. He even gave examples from other sports to make his point.
"In basketball, players prefer to play in the NBA over the US national team.
This young cricketer's story is truly inspiring. His family was so deep in debt, they had to sell their house. But he played in the IPL, earned big, and is now finally clearing all their loans. The IPL gives many young cricketers a stage to show their talent and also become financially strong. This is the story of Mukul Choudhary from the Lucknow Super Giants, who played cricket while his family was buried in debt.Mukul Choudhary smashed 57 runs off just 27 balls against KKR, hitting a six to seal a massive win for Lucknow Super Giants. Everyone praised his brave performance, but few knew his family was struggling with huge loans back home.Mukul's father is a teacher and his grandfather is a retired soldier. When their debts grew too large, the family had to sell their house. Later, they bought a small plot with money from his grandfather and took another loan to build a new house. This new debt became a major worry for the family.Despite all the financial stress, Mukul Choudhary never gave up on cricket. The Lucknow Super Giants bought him for a whopping Rs 2.6 crore. Even though LSG didn't have a great season, Mukul's fighting spirit was praised. The team has now paid his salary. After returning home from the IPL, Mukul Choudhary expressed his joy. He is happy not just with his performance, but also because his family is finally becoming debt-free. 'We are now going to be completely free from debt. What bigger happiness is there than this?' he said.Mukul says he will forever be grateful to the IPL and the Lucknow Super Giants team. 'They gave my talent a chance.

For many fans, cricket means Virat Kohli. A new viral video of a young fan shows just how much he means to people, and it has a happy ending that's winning hearts online.

So, what happened?

During the IPL 2026 season, a little boy stood for hours outside the Royal Challengers Bengaluru team hotel. His only dream was to get an autograph from his hero, Virat Kohli, on his bat. When Kohli finally came out, the boy tried to run towards him, full of excitement. However, security staff stopped him, and he couldn't meet his favourite cricketer.

The Boy Broke Down in Tears

The boy was heartbroken that he couldn't get the autograph. He threw his bat on the ground and ran back to his parents, crying. Someone caught this emotional moment on camera. The video was posted on social media and quickly went viral, getting millions of views and touching everyone's hearts.

Lalit Modi Stepped In After Seeing the Viral Video

The video even reached former IPL chief Lalit Modi. He saw how upset the boy was and decided to do something about it. He managed to find the boy and promised to send him a special IPL bat signed by Virat Kohli himself. As soon as this news broke, people on social media started praising Lalit Modi for his kind gesture.

Remember the kid who cried when Virat Kohli refused to meet him for autograph on bat? Lalit Modi recently said on a podcast that the incident broke his heart. He asked the host to find the kid, got him & gave him Season 1 bat signed by all players.See how happy the kid is ♥️ pic.twitter.com/dDq8ICUYvR

— Chota Don (@choga_don) June 3, 2026

How Did the Boy React?

According to his family, the moment he heard he was getting a signed bat from Virat, his smile returned. The same boy who was crying just days ago is now over the moon that his dream is coming true. Many people commented online, saying, "This incident shows how much an autograph means to a true fan."

Netizens Are Full of Praise

This whole episode has got people talking. On one hand, it proves once again how much fans love Virat Kohli. On the other hand, everyone is appreciating Lalit Modi for understanding the boy's feelings and stepping in to help.

Overall, a story that started with tears has ended with a big smile, and it's a moment that has won over cricket fans everywhere.

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) all-rounder Krunal Pandya reflected on his bond with his brother and Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik amid the rumours of a rift during the recently concluded IPL 2026.

The Pandya brothers grew up training together, their shared journey from humble beginnings to becoming household names in Indian cricket serving as the cornerstone of their relationship. They played together for the Mumbai Indians and won seven IPL trophies before they parted ways as their careers took different paths, as Hardik moved to the Gujarat Titans in 2022 before returning to MI, while Krunal moved to Lucknow Super Giants and then RCB.

However, there have been rumours of a rift between the two brothers, especially during the IPL 2026, with many speculating that their personal lives were mirroring the increased tension seen on the pitch during the high-stakes match between MI and RCB at the Wankhede Stadium in April.

Also Read: Shaun Tait resigns as Bangladesh bowling coach to focus on family

‘A Very Healthy Conversation About Cricket’

Amid the rumours of a rift, Krunal Pandya has set the record straight on his relationship with his brother Hardik, stating that they both have conversations about cricket that remain focused on personal and professional growth, detached from the competitive noise of the IPL season.

"We have always discussed cricket in terms of tactical, technical stuff, which always helps." Krunal told The Times of India (TOI).

“It has always been a good conversation, a very healthy conversation about cricket and how we can get better. When you have your brother also playing the same sport, it always helps each other," he added.

    View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Hardik Pandya (@hardikpandya93)

Krunal and Hardik’s career trajectories have been quite different from each other, as the latter quickly rose to prominence as a frontline international all-rounder and high-profile captain, often finding himself at the centre of national media attention. He played a pivotal role in Team India’s T20 World Cup triumphs in 2024 and 2026.

Krunal, on the other hand, has carved out a distinct identity as a reliable spin-bowling all-rounder and a clutch performer in high-pressure matches, particularly since his transition to RCB, where he played a crucial role in their two successive IPL triumphs in 2025 and 2026, solidifying his reputation as one of the league's most dependable assets.

10 Trophies in Pandya’s House

Alongside winning seven IPL trophies, Krunal and Hardik Pandya added three more major accolades to their collection, including the elder Pandya’s two titles with RCB and the latter’s maiden IPL triumph as a captain with the Gujarat Titans.

Reflecting on the collective success the family has achieved over the last decade, Krunal expressed deep gratitude for the path they have charted together.

“And, I mean, 10 trophies in the Pandya household is not a bad number to have. God’s been kind," Krunal added, emphasising the pride he takes in their shared legacy.

Hardik and Krunal Pandya’s success as brothers rather than mere rivals has redefined what it means to support one another in an individualistic sport. Since the Pandya brothers became rivals in the IPL after Krunal departed from the Mumbai Indians in 2021, they have consistently navigated the complexities of competing against each other.

However, the recent rumours of a rift have served as a reminder of how high-pressure competitive environments can sometimes lead to public misinterpretations.

Also Read: 'Ek Bihari Sab Pe Bhaari': Virat Kohli’s Viral Pep Talk to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Revealed (WATCH)

The Rajasthan Royals (RR) batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s exceptional and record-breaking season in the recently concluded IPL 2026 has put him in a position for a maiden India call-up, as the BCCI selection committee mulls fast-tracking the 15-year-old into the senior setup.

Sooryavanshi had an IPL season to remember, as he set several long-standing records in the tournament’s history, while finishing as the highest run-getter, with 776 runs, including a century and 5 fifties, at an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 237.30 in 15 matches. His explosive batting and fearless strokeplay have become a case study for future generations of cricketers.

Alongside his record-breaking season, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi took home five major individual honours, including the Orange Cap, MVP, Super Striker, and Most Sixes of the season, highlighting his unrivalled dominance at the crease and his evolution from a promising talent into the most destructive force in the league.

Also Read: Mukul Choudhary’s Inspiring Path: Sold House in Debt, Now IPL Star Pays Off Family Burdens

Sooryavanshi’s India Call-Up on Cards?

During the IPL 2026, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi received an India A call-up for the ODI tri-series against Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, marking his first step towards representing the senior national side. While his selection initially signalled a clear path through development ranks, the intensity of his performance throughout the IPL has forced the national selectors to accelerate their timeline.

According to the report by Cricbuzz, the BCCI selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, are currently weighing whether to include the young RR batter in the India squad for the T20I series against Ireland and potentially for the five-match series against England in July.

“There has been considerable debate over whether it is appropriate to fast-track a 15-year-old into the national side so early, but it is understood that the selectors are seriously considering handing the Rajasthan Royals batter the national cap," the report said.

It is increasingly emerging that the selectors are preparing to pick Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the T20I squad. There has been considerable debate over whether it is appropriate to fast-track a 15-year-old into the national side so early, but it is understood that the selectors… https://t.co/wjtVXzkbCj pic.twitter.com/aLm4epFrei

— Cricbuzz (@cricbuzz) June 4, 2026

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s possible elevation into the senior India T20I squad stems from the BCCI selection committee’s focus on the 2028 T20 World Cup cycle, viewing the upcoming series as a strategic opportunity to integrate high-potential talent early, allowing them to gain major international experience before the global tournament.

With the reports of Suryakumar Yadav’s potential transition away from the T20I setup as the board looks to refresh its core, Sooryavanshi is viewed as the ideal candidate to inject fresh aggression and power-hitting capability into the top-order, ensuring that India’s T20 evolution remains on the cutting edge of the modern game.

The Selection Dilemma: Fans Split on Fast-Tracking the Prodigy

The report of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s potential of getting fast-tracked into the national setup, especially in T20Is, has sparked a debate on social media, especially X (formerly Twitter), where fans and cricketing enthusiasts are sharply divided over the prudence of such an early promotion.

Taking to their X handles, fans and cricket enthusiasts expressed mixed reactions, with some backing the selectors’ move to fast-track the prodigy due to his exceptional form, while others urged caution, suggesting he should be gradually groomed through domestic and longer-format cricket before a senior India call-up.

Fast-tracking works when talent and temperament align. The veteran Australian pacer missed the first half of the IPL 2026 due to a lower back injury, and the resulting rehabilitation program managed by Cricket Australia ensured his long-term fitness.

With Australia scheduled to play 15 Test matches between August 2026 and March 2027, Cummins is keenly aware that his availability for franchise cricket must be balanced against the physical toll of the high-stakes assignments.

Also Read: India call-up felt like a dream, says uncapped all-rounder Harsh Dubey

‘Something Has Got to Give’: Cummins’ Candid on Busy 2027

The 2027 calendar is expected to be a packed international schedule for Australia, especially given the looming 12-month stretch of high-intensity cricket, including the Test series against India, the 150th Ashes Anniversary, the 2027 Ashes series, and culminating in the 2027 ODI World Cup in southern Africa.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Cummins stated that his priority remains Test cricket and the ODI World Cup, adding that something will have to give in his schedule, and IPL participation may need to be reconsidered depending on workload and fitness.

“Something has got to give at some stage next year, and it's not going to be test matches or an ODI World Cup,” Cummins said.

“I will make a call a lot closer and work with the franchise to see what makes sense. (@CricCrazyJohns) June 3, 2026

Pat Cummins is currently Australia’s Test and ODI captain, and his availability for the crucial period ahead is seen as vital for the team’s prospects as they look to defend their World Cup crown and navigate a challenging set of away Test series in India and England.

With his fellow pacers, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, also approaching later stages of their careers, Cricket Australia is expected to be increasingly selective about player workloads to ensure the core group remains fit for the most significant international fixtures.

The 18-Month Marathon: Cummins Prepares for Cricket’s Toughest Stretch

Pat Cummins has made it clear his commitment to Australian cricket remains a priority over franchise cricket, but he acknowledges that the next year and a half will be a massive physical test.

Emphasising the need for flexibility, he stated that the team management is open to ‘winding down’ senior bowlers, including Starc and Hazelwood, during long series to keep them fresh for peak events, a strategy that could see him miss matches even during a major tour like the upcoming one in India.

“It's possible. I think we're fairly open-minded to anything, as we’ve seen over the last couple of years,” Cummins said.

“I see a world where we're potentially winding some bowlers down, even say at the back end of an Indian series if they don't look like they're going to play, to give them an extra rest ahead of the Ashes.

“It's going to be a big push the next 18 months or so, but I think we'll look back on it hopefully and see it as one of the more rewarding periods of our career,” he added.

As Pat Cummins remains uncertain for IPL 2027, it remains to be seen whether Sunrisers Hyderabad will look to groom a new leadership figure or seek an experienced alternative in the auction to ensure continuity, should their star skipper decide that a season of rest is necessary to sustain his international career.

Also Read: Inglis, Green, Ellis shine as Australia beat Pakistan to level series

As the IPL 2026 just concluded, with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru successfully defending their maiden triumph by defeating the Gujarat Titans in the final, the cricket world is already shifting its focus toward the high-stakes international calendar of 2027, which is likely to consist of a gruelling schedule that includes the World Test Championship Final and a demanding tour of the subcontinent.

The 19th IPL season witnessed a participation of overseas players who were picked up or retained by the franchises, as the tournament received a 2-month window from the International Cricket Council (ICC), meaning no bilateral series or major ICC tournaments were scheduled during this period, allowing for full participation.

The last IPL season saw players navigating a turbulent schedule, heavily disrupted by the mid-season security crisis and border tensions in 2025. Following these events, and the subsequent military success of 'Operation Sindoor', any overseas stars left and struggled to return. Furthermore, South African players who had rejoined their franchises departed again before the playoffs to prepare for the WTC 2025 final.

Also Read: IPL 2026: RR's Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on lessons learned, 700-run goal

The IPL 2027 Looms Large Over International Priorities

Though the 20th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is still 9 months away, speculation is already mounting regarding the availability of Australia’s premier pace trio. The likes of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood have been the subject of intense internal debate, as Cricket Australia weighs the commercial appeal of their participation against the physical toll of a year-long international campaign.

Recently, Cricket Australia has offered a three-year contract extension with an increase in their annual retainer fees to Pat Cummins and Travis Head, aimed at potentially offsetting the massive potential earnings they would forgo by skipping the IPL. Since the T20 leagues have become exceptionally large, the board is making an unprecedented financial commitment to ensure their star players remain tethered to the Australian team's core objectives.

Cummins, Starc, and Hazlewood form a core pace bowling attack for Australia in Tests and ODIs, and their availability will define the sustainability of the team’s bowling rotation during a year that demands peak performance across multiple formats.

CA are very confident that Cummins,Starc and Hazlewood will be part of the 2027 ODI WC. There is a very high possibility of all 3 players missing the IPL next season in order to manage their workload for the Ashes and the ODI WC. Also internal discussions are going with CA…

— Troll cricket unlimitedd (@TUnlimitedd) May 25, 2026

Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc missed the first half of the recently concluded IPL season due to respective injuries, while Josh Hazlewood joined the Royal Challengers Bengaluru squad late, following an extended recovery program for hamstring and Achilles tendon issues.

Australia’s pace bowling trio is currently at a crossroads where the demands of an unprecedented international calendar are increasingly clashing with the lucrative commitments of franchise cricket.

Why Hazlewood, Starc, and Cummins May Miss IPL 2027?

The next season of the Indian Premier League may not witness Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Pat Cummins in action, as Cricket Australia wants to priortize their long-term physical fitness and availability for a grueling 21-Test international cycle leading into the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Australia head coach Matthew McDonald recently confirmed that the board is managing the bodies of three quicks, as they set their eyes on the WTC Final and the marquee event, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. By 2027, Cummins, Hazlewood, and Starc will turn 34, 36, and 37, respectively, and thus the focus of the national selection panel has shifted toward protecting their remaining peak years.

Between August 2026 and the start of the IPL 2027, Australia is scheduled to play 15 Test matches, and with Cricket Australia desperate to make a third consecutive WTC Final at Lord’s, they want their core bowling attack fully fit and rested. Thereafter, Australia’s focus will be shifted towards its ODI World Cup title defence, making the calculated risk of an injury-prone IPL season a luxury the team simply cannot afford.

If Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood decide to opt out of the IPL 2027 to manage their workloads, it will be a huge setback for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, respectively, as their departure would create a structural vacuum in both leadership and bowling discipline.

The Australian pace trio may be released by the franchises if they formally communicate their unavailability in advance. It remains to be seen whether Cummins, Starc, and Hazlewood will prioritise their enduring legacy in the international arena over the immense financial pull of the IPL.

Also Read: Emotional RCB Skipper Rajat Patidar Dedicates IPL 2026 Win to 11 Fans Lost in Tragedy

Team India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav’s future in the national setup appeared to be at a critical crossroads, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly planning to move from his leadership and potentially omit him from future T20I squads entirely.

Suryakumar Yadav led the Men in Blue to a successful T20 World Cup title in March this year, defeating New Zealand in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. However, things have taken a sharp turn in the months following that historic triumph in front of a home crowd. With the selectors focusing on the next T20 World Cup cycle, the 35-year-old’s place in the squad has become uncertain.

Suryakumar’s struggles with his form in T20Is since taking over as full-time captain in 2024 and recently in the IPL 2026, where he could not replicate his usual explosive consistency, have forced the selection committee as well as the team management to reassess his role as a captain and player.

Also Read: India's T20I Captaincy: Sanju Samson Doubtful as BCCI Weighs Future Leadership Plans

The Selectors to Move on from SKY

Making his T20I debut in 2021, Suryakumar Yadav’s journey with Team India is apparently coming to an end after five years, as the BCCI selection committee is prioritizing a comprehensive squad overhaul that favors youth development and long-term tactical planning, ultimately necessitating a transition away from the veteran batter.

According to the report by The Indian Express, a BCCI official said the selectors and team management, in consultation with the head coach Gautam Gambhir, have decided to move on from Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain, despite him leading the Men in Blue to the T20 World Cup triumph, adding that concerns over his poor form influenced the decision.

“The selection committee, BCCI & team management, in consultation with coach Gautam Gambhir, have decided that India should go with a new skipper from here on. Despite leading the Men in Blue to the T20 World Cup 2026 in February, the 35-year-old now faces a precarious future.

Suryakumar Yadav’s struggles with his form over the last year and his moderate performance in IPL 2026 have reportedly forced the BCCI to prioritize a long-term succession plan, to build a core group in mind for the 2028 T20 World Cup and the Los Angeles Olympics.

Also Read: Rishabh Pant vital to Test plans despite losing vice-captaincy: Coach

No End to Suryakumar Yadav’s Struggles

Suryakumar Yadav-led Triumphs Knights MNE lost to Bandra Blasters, led by Suved Parkar, by four wickets in their opening match of the T20 Mumbai League 2026. The focus on Suryakumar, whose consistent performances since 2025 have put him in the immense spotlight and further intensified following reports that the BCCI selection committee is considering moving on from him as both T20I captain and as an active squad member.

Following a moderate outing for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026, where he scored 270 runs, including two fifties, at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147 in 13 matches, the veteran batter has found it increasingly difficult to silence his critics. Since his place in the T20I squad is reportedly in jeopardy, Suryakumar is under immense pressure to rediscover his rhythm.

However, there was no end to the veteran batter’s struggle as he was dismissed for 19 off 11 balls and 4 off 6 balls in Triumphs Knights MNE’s first two matches against North Mumbai Panthers and Bandra Blasters.

Suryakumar Yadav’s sad walk back to the pavilion after getting out for 4 runs off 6 balls. While some urged patience, describing his struggles as a temporary phase and backing him to bounce back, others questioned his prolonged dip in form.

However, many suggested the veteran batter take a break from cricket to reset mentally and physically after five months of gruelling T20 cricket, including the T20 World Cup 2026 and the IPL 2026.

How could someone play well when such negative things going around him, just saw him playing he was looking totally out of the zone.Surya bhau stay strong ...You have achieved a lot in such short span https://t.co/FcNgGUoZir

— RoMan (@SkyXRohit1) June 4, 2026

It's just a minor speed bump. He argues that tactical acumen should be prioritized over the commercial benefits of having an Indian player as the face of the franchise, citing the success of foreign captains.

Former India cricketer turned commentator Sanjay Manjrekar expressed his views that the IPL franchises should hand over the captaincy duties to the overseas players in the tournament. In the recently concluded IPL season, Pat Cummins was the only overseas captain, leading the Sunrisers Hyderabad into the playoffs.

The remaining nine were the Indian captains, out of which six, including Hardik Pandya, Ruturak Gaikwad, Rishabh Pant, Ajinkya Rahane, Axar Patel, and Shreyas Iyer, failed to guide their respective teams to the playoffs. Ishan Kishan captained the SRH in the first half of the season in Cummins’ absence before the Australian pacer returned to his leadership role after recovering from a back injury.

Rajat Patidar and Shubman Gill led the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Gujarat Titans to the IPL 2026 final, with RCB successfully defending their maiden triumph, which they won in the last IPL season under Patidar’s captaincy by clinching a narrow victory in a thrilling summit clash.

Also Read: Emotional RCB Skipper Rajat Patidar Dedicates IPL 2026 Win to 11 Fans Lost in Tragedy

Redefining the IPL Skipper: Manjrekar’s Simple Philosophy

Sanjay Manjrekar, who has often been outspoken and direct in his analysis of the game, emphasized that franchises must priortize tactical acumen and leadership performance over the commercial benefits of having a local face as the team's captain.

“I think we've also seen a lot of Indian captains struggle. You mentioned players like Axar Patel and Rishabh Pant. There have been quite a few Indian captains who haven't quite delivered." Manjrekar said on the Sportstar Podcast.

“My philosophy is simple: in T20 cricket, you need the best captain available. If that happens to be a foreign player, then so be it. David Warner captained successfully, Pat Cummins has done it as well," he added.

Over the past 19 seasons, three overseas captains, including Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist, and David Warner, all from Australia, have won the IPL titles with the Rajasthan Royals, Deccan Chargers (now defunct), and Sunrisers Hyderabad, respectively. MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir, Hardik Pandya, and Rajat Patidar are the only Indian players to have tasted success as captains in IPL.

However, Manjrekar’s comments serve as a timely reminder that in the high-stakes environment of modern T20 cricket, the pursuit of tactical excellence may necessitate looking beyond national boundaries to secure the most effective leaders.

Why Franchises Appoint Indian as Captains?

Further speaking on the IPL captains, Sanjay Manjrekar explained the reason behind franchises’ appointing Indians as their skippers, stating that there is a significant non-cricketing motivation at play, but merely as a face of the teams to bolster the franchise’s brand value and marketability.

"That said, there is a non-cricketing reason why franchises often prefer Indian captains. An Indian captain becomes the face of the franchise and strengthens the brand," the former India batter said.

“Ultimately, franchises have to decide what is better for the brand and what is better for winning titles. Ideally, the captain should be someone who is genuinely a good leader, regardless of nationality," he added.

The likes of MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli have been instrumental in setting the gold standard for captaincy-driven brand equity in the IPL, and their association with the Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, respectively, helped the franchises build a massive fanbase over the years.

Meanwhile, Rajat Patidar joined Dhoni and Rohit in the elite list of captains to have back-to-back IPL titles as a captain.

Also Read: IPL 2026: RCB's Tim David fined, to miss first match of next season

Two days after the Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2026 Final to retain their maiden IPL triumph, the veteran Indian batter Virat Kohli’s conversation with the young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has finally been brought to light, with an official video revealing the legendary cricketer's powerful words of wisdom to the 15-year-old prodigy.

Sooryavanshi was in attendance for the IPL 2026 final, where he took home five major honours, including the Orange Cap, MVP, Super Striker, and Most Sixes of the season. Before the presentation ceremony, the young batter was approached by Kohli, and the latter was captured on camera having a heartfelt conversation with the Bihar cricketer.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi congratulating Virat Kohli on the IPL win. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/q0LFhwyVbX

— Mufaddal Vohra (@mufaddal_vohra) May 31, 2026

This was the second meeting between Virat Kohli and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, as they previously met in the league stage of the tournament, where the former RCB captain autographed the RR batting sensation’s cap, which he happily flaunted as a prized possession.

The conversation between the two not only showcased the mutual respect between an established icon and a rising star but also highlighted Kohli’s commitment to mentoring the next generation.

Also Read: Ex-IPL Chairman Lalit Modi Predicts 'T20 Double Century' for RR Star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

What Kohli Said to Sooryavanshi in a Viral Conversation?

Virat Kohli’s conversation with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after the IPL 2026 final caught the spotlight, but fans were left curious about the actual content of the exchange, as the initial footage circulating on social media lacked audio.

A few days later, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) released a video on its X handle (formerly Twitter), which reveals the conversation between Kohli and Sooryavanshi. In a video, the veteran Indian batter was advising the 15-year-old to remain steadfast and grounded, emphasising that his remarkable success thus far was a direct result of his own hard work and conviction.

“Yaha se upar jana hai.

The former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman, Lalit Modi, made a revelation about convincing the senior Indian cricketers, including Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, to feature in the 2007 T20 World Cup, the first edition of the format that would eventually define the future of global cricket.

Team India, led by MS Dhoni, was one of the 12 teams to have participated in the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup, and eventually, the Men in Blue emerged as the winners after defeating Pakistan in the final. However, India headed into the tournament without the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, and Zaheer Khan, leaving the cricketing world surprised.

Following the disappointing group-stage exit in the 2007 ODI World Cup in the Caribbean, Indian cricket was in a state of turmoil. With the senior core facing heavy criticism, the T20 tournament was viewed by many established stars as a low-priority event compared to the longer formats.

Also Read: Vasundhara Raje believed in my IPL vision from beginning: Lalit Modi

‘Beg You to Play’: Modi’s Failed Pitch to the Legends

In an interview on the ANI Podcast, Lalit Modi has revealed that he personally approached the Indian team during their 2007 tour of England to plead for their participation in the upcoming tournament in South Africa. However, the former IPL chairman faced resistance from the senior players, who dismissed his entreaties with open skepticism.

“I went to every player in the dressing room in England when India was touring in 2007. I went, and I said, 'Please, I beg you to play the T20.' They said, 'Lalit, are you joking? What is this stupid game? We don't want to play it.'” Modi said.

“Everybody said that to me in the dressing room. 'Oh, we've had a long tour. We want to be with our families," he added.

The senior players, including Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and Rahul Dravid, ultimately opted to skip the tournament entirely, citing exhaustion and a lack of interest in the untested format. After the BCCI decided to send a ‘completely raw and green’ squad led by a young MS Dhoni, the team’s eventual historic victory not only shocked the skeptics but also catalyzed the T20 revolution that would eventually change the landscape of the sport forever.

‘Would You Accept That Today?’: Modi Reflects on Changing Standards

Further speaking on the BCCI’s decision to send the India squad with young players, Modi emphasized how drastic the shift in perception has been over the years. The former IPL chairman added that the very idea of fielding a ‘B’ team would be unthinkable for the public and the cricket board in today’s era.

“The BCCI didn't even send the main team, the India team, to South Africa to play the World Cup T20. They sent a second team. 'Let's not even send the India team. Let's put our new team under Mahendra Singh Dhoni.' Completely raw. Completely green,” Lalit Modi said.

“The Tendulkars, the Dravids, the Saurav Gangulys; none of them played the T20 World Cup. Would you accept that today? Today, if the Indian team is to go to the World Cup, any World Cup, would you accept a B team? Would the public accept a B team? Would the board accept a B team?" he added.

When the legendary players like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sourav Ganguly were dropped from the MS Dhoni-led squad for the T20 World Cup in 2007, the cricket landscape was vastly different.

At the time, the format was widely dismissed by veterans as a trivial distraction, leading to their collective decision to step aside and focus on traditional formats. Since ODIs and Tests were the main pillars of cricketing prestige and professional longevity, the T20 format struggled to find legitimacy among the established elite, who viewed it as a fleeting experiment rather than the future of the game.

Evolution of T20 Cricket

Lalit Modi played a pivotal role in the evolution of T20 cricket in India by introducing the Indian Premier League, which has now become the most lucrative and globally recognized T20 league in the world.

Speaking on the growth of T20 cricket in India, the former IPL chairman stated that the format initially had no belief or viewership in India, but popularity drives advertising and revenue—more eyeballs bring money, while low viewership leads to no commercial value.

“Nobody believed in the T20 cricket in India. If there are no eyeballs, there's no advertising dollars. There's no advertising dollars, there's no subscription.” Modi said.

“If someone is watching, then there will be money. If no one is watching, then there will be no money. Today, anything that has eyeballs is going to get the money from the advertisers," he added.

The T20 cricket in India has evolved after Team India’s historic T20 World Cup triumph and the inception of the IPL, which transformed the format from a commercial uncertainty into a juggernaut that commands record-breaking viewership and unprecedented investment.

Over the last several years, many T20 leagues around the world, including the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Lanka Premier League (LPL), Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), and the Big Bash League (BBL), have followed in the IPL's footsteps, further cementing the T20 format as a global phenomenon.

Also Read: Lalit Modi: Rupert Murdoch became my enemy after CLT20 cancellation

Ahead of the One-Off Test against the visiting Afghanistan team, Team India is facing a selection dilemma as uncertainty looms over Mohammed Siraj’s participation in the series opener. India’s One-Off Test of the home series against Afghanistan will take place on June 6 at the New PCA Stadium in Mullanpur.

Following the conclusion of the IPL 2026, where the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) successfully defended their maiden triumph, the focus is shifted towards the national duties, with the players selected in the squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan reporting for training in Mullanpur to prepare for the clash on June 6.

After two months of the gruelling IPL season, the team management is prioritizing physical recovery and workload management. Shubman Gill, Devdutt Padikkal, Washington Sundar, Mohammed Siraj, and Sai Sudharsan were part of the final, which concluded on May 31, and are now being closely monitored as they integrate back into the red-ball setup for the upcoming Test.

Also Read: IND vs AFG Test: Shubman Gill-led Team India begin red-ball grind

Mohammed Siraj’s Unavailability Remains Uncertain

With three days left for the One-Off Test against Afghanistan, Team India pacer Mohammed Siraj’s availability remains uncertain, with the team management expected to make a final decision within the next 48 hours. The senior pacer, who suffered a hamstring pull during Qualifier 2 against the Rajasthan Royals, is currently monitored by BCCI medical staff.

According to a report by The Times of India, a source close to the BCCI said the selectors wanted to rest Siraj after a long IPL season with the Gujarat Titans. Still, they didn’t want to field an inexperienced bowling attack. In case Siraj is rested for the One-Off Test, Gurnoor Brar is likely to make his debut, while Auqib Nabi will be added to the squad.

“Siraj has had a long season, and if he is rested, there is a bright possibility Gurnoor will play, and Nabi will come into the squad,” the source told the TOI.

MASSIVE WORKLOAD DILEMMA FOR THE AFGHANISTAN TEST! Major news coming out of the Mullanpur camp :-- Mohammed Siraj’s availability hangs completely in the balance. A definitive workload decision will be locked in over the next 48 hours.- There was initial reluctance to rest… pic.twitter.com/CGMjQ9hwyK

— Shariq (@CricBhakt7380) June 3, 2026

Mohammed Siraj played the entire IPL season for the Gujarat Titans, including the recently concluded Final, bowling 372 balls in 62 overs and picking 19 wickets at an average of 29.57 and an economy rate of 9.06 in 17 matches. Siraj delivered the third-highest number of balls in the IPL 2026, underlining the immense physical toll he has endured heading into this high-stakes Test.

With Jasprit Bumrah rested for the one-off Test and the three-match ODI series, Mohammed Siraj’s availability has become the central focus for Team India’s management. Since GT Pacer is currently under the BCCI medical team’s observation, the selectors are expected to take a final call on his participation within the next 48 hours.

Will Auqib Nabi Make His Test Debut for India?

The pacer Auqib Nabi Dar was not included in the squad for the One-Off Test, despite taking 60 wickets in the Ranji Trophy 2025/26 season, where Jammu and Kashmir clinched its maiden triumph of the prestigious red-ball tournament.

However, the J&K speedster was selected as one of the six net bowlers for the Indian team's training camp in Mullanpur. Joining him are Gurjapneet Singh, Prince Yadav, Saransh Jain, Zeeshan Ansari, and Shivang Kumar. Since Siraj remains uncertain for the One-Off Test against Afghanistan, Nabi is currently being closely assessed by the coaching staff during the Mullanpur training camp.

Auqib Nabi Dar’s inclusion as a net bowler has apparently provided the selectors and team management with a firsthand look at his rhythm and fitness levels, which have been stellar throughout his record-breaking Ranji Trophy campaign. Though Gurnoor Brar remains the frontrunner to replace Siraj in the playing XI, J&K pacer could still be drafted into the main roster as a late replacement if Mohammed Siraj fails his fitness assessment.

Auqib Nabi’s place in the playing XI remains a distinct possibility if the management opts for a tactical shift beyond just replacing Siraj. It remains to be seen it remains to be seen whether the team management will prioritize the sheer pace and height of Gurnoor Brar or the proven consistency and recent domestic form of Auqib Nabi.

Also Read: ECB names 12-man squad for New Zealand Test, Ollie Robinson recalled

Anushka Sharma Phone Wallpaper Viral: It's pretty common for Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma and star cricketer Virat Kohli to be in the news for one reason or another. Right after leading Royal Challengers Bangalore to their second consecutive IPL trophy, Virat and his wife Anushka were spotted in Vrindavan.

The 'Virushka' couple makes it a point to visit their guru, Premanand Maharaj of Vrindavan, for his blessings whenever they find the time. So, after the big IPL win, they went straight there. Videos of their visit quickly went viral on social media. But amidst all this, it was the wallpaper on Anushka Sharma's phone that really caught everyone's eye.

Anushka Sharma's phone wallpaper goes viral

After their meeting with Premanand Maharaj, the couple was seen at the airport. That's when eagle-eyed fans took a close look at Anushka's phone screen. Usually, you'd expect people to have photos of their husband, wife, or kids as their wallpaper. Fans thought Anushka would have Virat's picture, but they were in for a surprise.

It turns out, Anushka Sharma's phone wallpaper is a photo of their guru, Premanand Maharaj from Vrindavan.

Did you guys notice #AnushkaSharma 's phone wallpaper?? pic.twitter.com/BH5F8TIsA9

— The Climax India (@TheClimaxIndia) June 2, 2026

Virushka's deep faith in Premanand Maharaj!

For those who don't know, Virat Kohli has already retired from Test and international T20 cricket. He currently only plays the ODI format for Team India. To focus on his personal life, Virat spends a lot of his off-time with his family in London when there's no ODI cricket or IPL.

Whenever the couple is back in India, they make sure to visit Premanand Maharaj, where they sit and listen to his teachings with great devotion.

Following IPL 2026, Team India will take on Afghanistan in a one-off Test match that is not part of the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, as Afghanistan is not a WTC nation and the fixture is a standalone game. However, the match remains significant for India’s transition back to red-ball cricket and offers an opportunity to test young talent.

Following the conclusion of the IPL 2026, Team India will return to red-ball cricket with a One-Off Test match against Afghanistan, starting on June 6 at the New PCA Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh.

The players who were picked in India squad for the One-Off Test against Afghanistan assembled in Mumbai for the training following their duties with respective IPL franchises in the recently concluded season of the tournament. The India squad had its first training session on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at the PCA Stadium complex in Mullanpur.

After five months of T20 cricket, including the T20I series against New Zealand, the T20 World Cup 2026, and the recently concluded IPL season, Team India, led by Shubman Gill, will shift their focus towards the longer format of the game, with head coach Gautam Gambhir overseeing an intensive net session.

Also Read: IND vs AFG: Virat Kohli’s Hamstring Injury Forces BCCI to Find His Replacement for ODI Series

IND vs AFG One-Off Test Not Part of the WTC Cycle?

As Team India and Afghanistan will face off for the One-Off Test match in Mullanpur, the outcome of the match will not be included in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 points table. The match will be considered an official bilateral Test match rather than a part of the World Test Championship league structure.

The primary reason for this fixture from the ongoing WTC cycle is that Afghanistan, though a Full Member of the ICC with official Test status, is not currently one of the nine nations participating in the World Test Championship cycle. Since WTC is limited to the top nine-ranked Test-playing nations, any Test involving Afghanistan will be considered an independent bilateral series and carry no championship points.

Afghanistan is ranked 12th in the official ICC Test team rankings and thus falls outside the elite group of the top nine Test-playing nations that qualify to participate in the WTC league structure. Currently, India, Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, West Indies, Bangladesh, and New Zealand are the nine nations competing in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle.

The red ball grind Snapshots from #TeamIndia's solid training session ahead of the #INDvAFG Test @IDFCFIRSTBank pic.twitter.com/FAoqPshT8K

— BCCI (@BCCI) June 4, 2026

Another reason for the exclusion of the One-Off Test between India and Afghanistan from the current WTC cycle is that ICC regulations mandate that for any Test series to be eligible for inclusion in the WTC points table, it must consist of at least two Test matches.

As the fixture between India and Afghanistan is scheduled as a ‘one-off’ or single-Test encounter, it automatically falls outside the criteria required for championship points, regardless of the participating teams. Though India is part of the WTC cycle, the victory or draw from the Test against Afghanistan will not contribute to their points tally or percentage of points earned.

Why Afghanistan’s One-Off Test is Crucial for Team India?

Though the upcoming One-Off Test between India and Afghanistan is not part of the WTC cycle, it will serve a purpose for the Shubman Gill-led side, as it provides a platform to address several key transitions and tactical challenges facing the team. Since the selected players have been involved in T20 cricket for five months, this match is a vital test of their adaptability.

Currently, Team India is sitting at the sixth spot on the WTC points table, with 4 wins, as many losses, and one draw, and having a PTC of 48.15% after nine matches. The Shubman Gill-led side is fighting to climb the rankings to secure a spot in the WTC Final.

With nine Tests remaining to play in the current WTC cycle, Team India must leverage these upcoming high-stakes series to improve their points percentage and reclaim a position in the top two. The upcoming One-Off Test against Afghanistan serves as a critical transitional bridge to help the squad regain its red-ball rhythm and settle tactical uncertainties before those vital championship fixtures.

Moreover, with the senior players like Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja rested for the One-Off Test, the team management is expected to use this fixture to provide opportunities to young talents like Manav Suthar, Harsh Dubey, and Gurnoor Brar, who are aiming to stake their claims in future Test selections.

Also Read: Ashwin's eyes on Harsh Dubey for India vs Afghanistan one-off Test
