Thiruvananthapuram: An open letter urging the new Chief Minister of Kerala to make sure his official travel doesn't cause trouble for the common person is going viral. Prashanth Vasudev Nair, the former Deputy Director of the Tourism Department, has made this request, urging the new leader to stop the practice of massive traffic restrictions and oversized convoys. Prashanth in his Facebook post says that the routine of switching off traffic lights on the CM's route must end.

He argues that the Chief Minister's travel should not come at the cost of the public's freedom of movement. He suggests that one pilot and one escort vehicle are enough, and there's no need for a long line of officials' cars. He also questions the need for a jammer vehicle within Kerala and a permanent ambulance in the convoy, assuming the new CM is in good health. Prashanth also called for removing the excessive security cordon around Cliff House, the CM's official residence, saying, "Nobody is going to attack you here."

Full text of the letter

"This is for the new Chief Minister of Kerala.

Sir,

I have been a resident of Thiruvananthapuram city for over 15 years. This means I have lived in the city when the great humanitarian Oommen Chandy was Chief Minister, and also when Pinarayi Vijayan was the Chief Minister.

Sir,

For the last ten years, we city residents have often been denied our freedom to travel. Suddenly, the traffic lights would be switched off, our roads would be blocked, and then the Chief Minister's convoy would speed past, terrorising all of us who voted these people into power. We were too scared to say anything. If we did, we would have been in trouble!

Sir,

There was an unnecessary police guard at the Devaswom Board Junction, which leads to Cliff House. Some poor policemen also stood guard in the biting cold on the side road to Charachira. I don't know who was afraid of whom, Sir. And yet, nothing happened to anyone.

Sir,

When you travel through these city streets, please do not switch off the traffic lights. I know your time is more valuable than ours. There must be ways to manage it, but it shouldn't be by denying us our right to travel.

Sir,

The security cordon around Cliff House should be removed, Sir. Nobody is going to attack you here. And even if some terrorists show up, these four or five policemen won't be able to do anything. I don't know if the people who lost power will now try to scare you! They will surely try to justify the old ways by getting the intelligence department to give you a report about a fake threat, forcing you to accept the same excessive security. You must be careful about that. That was all just a delusion of power, Sir. Please do not fall for such delusions of power and luxurious comforts. The people will be watching. And someday, what happened now will happen again.

And Sir,

Let's talk about travel outside Thiruvananthapuram. One pilot and one escort vehicle in the front and back are enough. We need to rethink if a jammer is really needed within Kerala, Sir. Whoever you are, I don't think you are in such poor health. In that case, I don't think a permanent ambulance is needed either. The vehicles of other officials should not be part of the escort.

Sir,

A Chief Minister's dignity should not be compromised at all. But the convoy should be such that it allows us to see you as one of us. We have many such hopes. Let's hope they are not broken."

How people reacted to the open letter online

People strongly supported the letter and said it reflects the feelings of ordinary citizens. Many agreed that traffic should not be blocked for VIP convoys and that public time must be respected. Several users called the suggestions practical and hoped the new Chief Minister would follow them.

Some criticised past governments for causing inconvenience, while others stressed that leaders are not above the people. Overall, the reactions showed wide public frustration with convoy culture and a clear demand for simpler, people-friendly governance

A woman in Uttar Pradesh's Bijnor has been arrested for allegedly killing her live-in partner after years of abuse, police said. The case came to light on the morning of April 29, when the body of Anuj Kumar was found in a forest area near Julahapur village. He had suffered bullet injuries. His family quickly filed a murder complaint, and police formed three teams to investigate the case.

Police question live-in partner

During the investigation, suspicion fell on Shobha Rani, who had been living with Anuj. Police said that during questioning, she confessed to shooting him and explained what had happened.

According to Superintendent of Police (Rural) Prakash Kumar, Shobha had been married to Satyendra since 2011 and has a daughter. She separated from her husband in 2023.

#UPPolice@dgpup@Uppolice@adgzonebareilly@digmoradabad pic.twitter.com/z1VWVuYfGX

— Bijnor Police (@bijnorpolice) May 1, 2026

#UPPolice #UPPInNews pic.twitter.com/9g6FfGOEdJ

— Bijnor Police (@bijnorpolice) May 2, 2026

She met Anuj in 2024, and the two soon began living together.

Serious allegations against Anuj

Shobha accused Anuj of regularly abusing her. She told police that he physically assaulted her, sexually abused her and often demanded money.

She also alleged that he recorded private videos of her and used them to blackmail her into sexual acts.

When she refused his demands, she said, he beat her.

Concerns for daughter's safety

Shobha further alleged that Anuj had bad intentions towards her 10-year-old daughter. Police also said she accused him of previously trying to molest her younger sister, a case that had once sent him to jail.

These allegations increased her fear and distress.

Final incident on April 28

Police said the situation reached a breaking point on the night of April 28. Anuj allegedly took Shobha to a café and later to a village, where she claimed he assaulted and raped her.

At first, she reportedly considered taking her own life. But fearing for her daughter's safety, she instead decided to act.

Arrest and recovery

Police said Shobha took Anuj's country-made pistol and shot him. The weapon was later recovered after her arrest.

She was produced before a court and has now been sent to jail.

Police are continuing their investigation into the case.

A woman in Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri has accused her husband of dowry harassment, physical abuse and criminal intimidation. Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) on April 29, 2026, after she approached senior officials. The case has been filed under Sections 85 and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Marriage took place in 2024

The complainant, Rupali Gupta, said she married Shivam Gupta on February 19, 2024, in a traditional Hindu ceremony in Mainpuri. She alleged that her family spent nearly Rs 1 crore on the wedding. This included cash, jewellery and other expensive gifts.

However, she claimed that her husband and his family were still unhappy and later demanded an additional Rs 50 lakh, according to India Today report.

Allegations of harassment

According to the FIR, Shivam Gupta is an MTech graduate and works as an executive engineer in Mumbai. He reportedly earns around Rs 2.5 lakh every month and visited home every two weeks.

Rupali alleged that after marriage, she was regularly harassed over dowry. She said she faced both mental and physical abuse. She also claimed that her husband showed little interest in maintaining a normal married relationship, which made her suspicious.

Hidden camera claim

To understand his behaviour, Rupali said she installed hidden cameras in their rented flat. She alleged that on June 21, 2025, the footage showed her husband inviting other men to the house and engaging in objectionable acts.

The woman said watching the videos left her deeply shocked and mentally disturbed.

Threats after confrontation

According to the complaint, when she confronted her husband, he threatened to kill her if she told anyone about what she had seen. She said fear stopped her from approaching the police immediately.

Rupali also claimed that when she first visited the local police station, her complaint was not registered.

Police begin investigation

After submitting a written complaint to senior police officers, an FIR was finally registered. Police have assigned the case to a sub-inspector for further investigation.

Officials said they are examining all evidence, including the alleged video footage. Further legal action will depend on the findings of the investigation.

The case has drawn attention because of the serious nature of the allegations. Police have not yet made any arrests.

A fake marriage racket in Maharashtra’s Beed has been exposed after a man reported being cheated. The accused woman allegedly married nine men and fled with money and jewellery each time. Agents targeted rural bachelors, promising quick marriages.

A suspected 'looter bride' racket has come to light in Maharashtra's Beed district, where police are investigating a shocking case of fake marriages and cheating. A local man, Yogesh Shinde, has alleged that he was tricked into marrying a woman who later ran away with cash and jewellery.

Police say the case may not be isolated. Early findings suggest that the same woman may have married several men in a similar way before disappearing soon after each wedding.

According to the complaint, a group of agents targeted unmarried men in rural areas who were struggling to find a bride. These agents would approach families and promise to arrange a marriage quickly.

They would then introduce a woman as a suitable match. After gaining trust, they allegedly collected large amounts of money in the name of wedding expenses and arrangements.

Once the marriage took place, the bride would stay for a short time, sometimes just a day or two, before fleeing with cash, jewellery, and other valuables.

In this case, Yogesh later discovered that the woman had reportedly married at least eight other men using the same method. In a dramatic turn, nine grooms reportedly came forward around the same time after realising they had all been cheated by the same woman.

Their complaints helped expose what appears to be a well-organised gang working behind the scenes.

Police believe the group carefully planned each step, from identifying victims to arranging fake marriages and escaping without raising suspicion immediately.

Yogesh Shinde has said he lost lakhs of rupees in the scam. He also told police that he had no idea about the woman’s past marriages.

“I have been cheated and pushed into deep distress,” he said in his complaint to the district authorities, adding that the situation had even led to suicidal thoughts.

His complaint has now been registered at Chaklamba police station.

Police have arrested the woman accused in the case and are now searching for other members of the alleged gang. Officials are trying to find out how many more people may have been targeted.

Investigators suspect that the racket has been active for some time and may have cheated multiple victims across different villages.

The case has raised serious concerns in Beed district, especially among families looking for marriage alliances.

Growing concern in rural areas

Such scams highlight the risks faced by families in rural regions where finding a suitable match can be difficult. Police have urged people to verify details carefully before entering into marriage arrangements through unknown agents.

Authorities have also asked anyone with similar experiences to come forward and report the matter.

Bengaluru: The Amruthahalli police have arrested two people, including a private college student, for allegedly misbehaving and assaulting police constables. The incident happened when the cops questioned the youths for holding a drinking party in their car, parked right in the middle of a road in the wee hours of the morning.

The arrested individuals are Dev Harsh from Mariyappanapalya and Aryan. The police are now on the lookout for two others, Chand and Mrinal, who fled the scene. The constables who were attacked, Hanumantha Alagundi and Rudrappa, were on patrol duty in Akashvani Layout when the accused behaved badly with them. Officials said that the policemen received treatment for their injuries and have since recovered.

Uniform torn, goondagiri on display

Here's what happened. Around 3 AM on May 1st, near Dasarahalli's Akashvani Layout, four youths were having a drinking session in their car. The group included B.Tech students Harsh, Chand, and Mrinal, along with Aryan, a private company employee. At the same time, Amruthahalli police constables Rudrappa and Hanumantha were on their patrol rounds on that route.

The policemen objected to them drinking in the middle of the road. This angered one of the youths, who started abusing the cops, shouting, 'Karnataka Police Ma*** Chor'. When one of the constables tried to get his lathi from the bike, all four of them grabbed him from behind.

The accused then tore the constable's uniform, punched and kicked the policemen, and fled the scene. Following the incident, an FIR was registered at the Amruthahalli police station based on a complaint filed by the injured constable, Rudrappa. The police eventually tracked down and arrested two of them using the car's registration number. An investigation is underway to find the absconding duo, Chand and Mrinal, police officials confirmed.

Students from rich families

It has come to light that except for Mrinal, the other three accused are from locally well-to-do families. Sources believe that their arrogance and behaviour stemmed from their wealth.

The elephant also rammed into the wall of a nearby house.

As the temple is located in a residential area, officials quickly blocked two sides of the ground to stop the elephant from escaping.

Police, forest officials and trained elephant squad members rushed to the scene.

After nearly two hours, officials fired tranquilliser darts and finally managed to control the elephant around 12.30 pm.

The animal was then chained securely to a coconut tree at the temple ground.

Investigation continues

The incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of using elephants during temple festivals.

Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances that led to the tragic incident

In a major upset in Tamil Nadu politics, M. K. Stalin has lost the Kolathur Assembly seat to V. S. Babu of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. Babu won by a margin of 8,284 votes, securing 76,796 votes against Stalin’s 68,512. The result is being seen as one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Kolathur had been a stronghold for Stalin. He had won the seat in 2011, 2016 and 2021. This defeat ends a long winning streak and marks a major political moment in the state.

TVK’s rapid rise

The victory comes as part of a larger wave in favour of TVK, the party launched by actor-turned-politician Vijay.

As of Monday afternoon, TVK had already won 11 seats and was leading in around 96 others. The majority mark in the 234-member Assembly is 118.

In comparison, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had won only a few seats and was trailing in many key constituencies.

TVK’s strong performance is being linked to support from young voters, anti-incumbency against the ruling party, and a focused grassroots campaign.

Strong performance in cities

One of the biggest factors behind TVK’s rise has been its performance in urban areas. Early trends showed the party leading in 31 out of 37 seats in the Chennai region. It was also ahead in 49 out of 65 urban constituencies across the state.

These gains appear to have come largely at the expense of the DMK, which has traditionally been strong in cities.

A three-way contest reshapes politics

This election saw a rare three-cornered contest between the DMK, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and TVK. For over 50 years, Tamil Nadu politics has been dominated by the DMK and AIADMK. But TVK’s entry has changed that pattern.

Many experts say this election could mark the beginning of a new political phase in the state.

TVK confident about forming government

Despite not yet crossing the majority mark, TVK leaders have shown confidence. Party spokesperson Felix Gerald said the party expects to form the government on its own. He claimed there is a “silent wave” in favour of Vijay and that people were looking for change after years of rule by the two major parties.

Earlier exit polls had predicted a DMK victory, but some surveys hinted that TVK could emerge as a strong force or even a kingmaker.

The ‘Vijay effect’

Many observers believe that Vijay’s popularity has played a major role in TVK’s success.

Like earlier actor-politicians such as M. G. Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa, Vijay has a strong emotional connection with the public.

However, his appeal is seen as more personal than political. He has built a large fan base over the years, and that support now seems to have turned into votes.

Social media reacts with memes

Soon after Stalin’s defeat became clear, social media was flooded with memes and reactions.

Many users pointed out that Stalin had won Kolathur in the last three elections but lost this time. Some posts joked about the sudden change, while others shared edited images and sarcastic comments.

MK Stalin Lost in Kolathur KARMA pic.twitter.com/vWvcGxc889

— MAHARATHI (@MahaRathii) May 4, 2026

MK Stalin lost in kolathurrrr #TVKVijay‌ #TVKVijay‌HQ pic.twitter.com/Pti2hVCmg5

— Magic cherie (@CherieMagi7447) May 4, 2026

Big Breaking : MK Stalin Lost in Kolathur pic.twitter.com/c14v0Mmfm5

— Tamil_trendy_07 (@Santosh23659897) May 4, 2026

Most satisfying to see the evil DMK and its coterie being obliterated! pic.twitter.com/Z8Kl6XpO2i

— karthik gopinath (@karthikgnath) May 4, 2026

This guy ragging MK Stalin since morning .#தமிழகவெற்றிக்கழகம் #TVKVijay #TVK pic.twitter.com/bMiCwjT1WS

— Sathish ✨ (@S_A_T_H_I_S_H_S) May 4, 2026

2011 - Stalin won in Kolathur. 2016 - Stalin won in Kolathur.2021 - Stalin won in Kolathur. 2026 - Stalin defeated in Kolathur. TVK's VS Babu ended the streak!! pic.twitter.com/MAVYDOyykG

— Chennai (@memeschennai) May 4, 2026

MK Stalin lost election from his own consistently pic.twitter.com/CqoYjioYIW

— Messi vk Stan (@Im_vkolhi) May 4, 2026

Oopies : Stalin is more dangerous than karunanidhi!Makkal : Mudittu iru da!! pic.twitter.com/iVHrhLH8xu

— SANGIPORALI (@SangiPorali) May 4, 2026

If a sitting CM has to lose it only shows that he has been incompetent, arrogant, insensitive and worthless … Bye bye Stalin @mkstalin pic.twitter.com/LgOuTJYsNJ

— karthik gopinath (@karthikgnath) May 4, 2026

Stalin uncleeeeeeWhistle satham epdi... Others took a lighter tone, comparing the result to a surprising twist in a film.

The online reaction shows how closely people are following the election and how strongly they are responding to the results.

What this result means

Stalin’s loss is not just about one seat. It reflects a larger shift in voter mood.

The result suggests that voters are open to change and willing to support a new political force. It also shows that even strong leaders are not guaranteed victory.

For TVK, this win adds to its growing momentum. For the DMK, it is a clear sign that it needs to rethink its strategy.

What happens next

Counting is still underway, and final results are yet to be declared.

If current trends continue, TVK could emerge as the largest party and possibly form the next government in Tamil Nadu.

For now, the focus remains on the numbers — and on how this unexpected political story will unfold.

(With ANI inputs)

Deaths of four members of a Mumbai family last month were caused by traces of zinc phosphide, a highly toxic rat poison ingredient found in their viscera. Police confirmed the family did not die due to eating watermelon, as widely believed earlier.

The deaths of four members of a family in Mumbai’s Pydhonie area were caused by rat poison, officials said on Thursday after forensic experts found traces of zinc phosphide in the victims' viscera.

Zinc phosphide is a highly toxic chemical mainly used to kill rats and mice.

The finding has changed the direction of the investigation, as many people earlier believed the family may have died after eating watermelon.

Police officials now say there is no evidence so far that the watermelon itself caused the deaths.

Family fell ill after late-night meal

The victims were identified as Abdullah Dokadia, his wife Nasreen Dokadia, and their two daughters, Ayesha and Zaineb.

The family lived in Ghari Mohalla on Ismail Kurte Road in south Mumbai.

According to officials, the family had hosted relatives for a get-together on the night of April 25.

After the guests left, the four family members reportedly ate pieces of watermelon at around 1 am on April 26.

A few hours later, all four developed severe vomiting and diarrhoea.

They were first taken to a nearby hospital and later shifted to the government-run JJ Hospital in Mumbai.

Despite treatment, all four died.

The incident had initially raised fears about food poisoning linked to watermelon consumption.

However, officials now say the deaths were not caused by bacterial infection or contaminated watermelon.

Earlier this week, the microbiology department of JJ Hospital submitted an initial report to the police.

The report stated that no bacterial infection was found in the victims’ blood samples.

Officials also confirmed that no bacteria had been detected in the bodies during testing.

This pushed investigators to focus more closely on chemical poisoning.

After post-mortem examinations, doctors preserved the viscera samples of the deceased for chemical analysis.

Experts later found traces of zinc phosphide in all four samples.

An official said investigators are still trying to determine whether the poison was consumed accidentally or intentionally.

“So far, we have found no strong reason why the whole family would take such an extreme step,” the official said.

Police are continuing to investigate all possible angles.

Following the deaths, officials from the Mumbai Police, forensic teams and the Food and Drug Administration visited the family’s house.

They collected samples of all food items consumed during the gathering.

These included chicken pulao, watermelon, drinking water and other food items.

The samples were sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for detailed testing.

Police have also recorded statements from relatives, neighbours and others connected to the family.

The JJ Marg police station is leading the investigation.

Questions still remain

While the discovery of zinc phosphide has ruled out bacterial food poisoning, several questions still remain unanswered.

Investigators are trying to find out how the poison entered the family’s food and whether it was mixed accidentally or deliberately.

Officials said the final forensic science laboratory report will provide clearer answers.

The case has shocked residents in the area, especially because the family had appeared normal during the gathering earlier that evening.

Police say the investigation is still ongoing and more details are expected after the final reports are received.

(With inputs from agencies)

A fresh controversy has emerged from Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki district, where a video allegedly shows fake biometric attendance being marked at a state-aided madrasa. The footage reportedly shows teachers' attendance being recorded using plastic cards instead of actual thumb impressions. The incident has raised serious concerns about how attendance is monitored in aided madrasas.

— Pushpraj sharma (@ThePushprajX) May 2, 2026

ATTENDANCE JIHADA case of fake biometric attendance by “ghost teachers” has come to light in a government-aided madrasa in Barabanki. The madrasa reportedly has around two dozen teachers, according to a report by India Today.

In the viral video, names of several teachers can be seen written on plastic cards. These cards are then placed on the biometric machine to mark attendance.

Officials suspect that attendance may have been recorded even when some teachers were absent.

Salary concerns emerge

Biometric attendance is compulsory in all state-aided madrasas in Uttar Pradesh. Attendance records are checked by district minority welfare officers before salaries are released.

If fake attendance is confirmed, it could mean salaries were paid based on manipulated records. This has made the case even more serious.

System loopholes exposed

Officials say the biometric system used in the madrasa does not appear to be linked to Aadhaar or any real-time online verification system.

Attendance records are reportedly printed and submitted manually. Experts believe this offline process creates loopholes that can be easily exploited.

They have also pointed to limited inspections and the lack of face authentication as major weaknesses.

Similar case surfaced earlier

This is the second such case in recent days. A similar incident was recently reported in Jaunpur, where fake attendance was allegedly marked using thumb impressions of a madrasa manager's family members.

That investigation is still underway.

The latest case has once again highlighted the need for stronger safeguards.

NHRC takes notice

The National Human Rights Commission has taken cognisance of the Barabanki case. Its involvement has added further weight to the investigation.

Earlier court directions had also recommended online authentication systems in madrasas to prevent such misuse.

Officials order enquiry

UP Joint Director Son Kumar confirmed that biometric attendance is mandatory. He said attendance reports are prepared at the district level and salaries are released only after verification.

"The Barabanki case will be investigated," he said.

Authorities have made it clear that strict action will be taken if any wrongdoing is found.

Public reaction to viral video

The video has sparked strong reactions online. Many users have demanded strict action against those responsible. Several called for tighter monitoring and better use of technology to stop such fraud in future.

Several devotees objected, saying the holy river should not be used for bathing pets.

Devotees raise objections

People at the spot asked the woman to take her dog elsewhere. A man in the video can be heard saying that even a priest had advised her not to bathe the animal there.

"The priest also said that the dog should be bathed somewhere else, but she did not listen," he said.

As more people gathered, the disagreement quickly became heated.

Woman defends herself

The woman was seen responding loudly to those questioning her. Some people present claimed that she used abusive language during the exchange.

The video also showed her saying that she was connected to a ministry. A man standing beside her was also involved in the confrontation.

No police complaint has been reported so far.

— Journalist Ravendra kumar (@Chhotukingoffi1) May 2, 2026

Social media divided

The video has triggered a strong debate online.

Many users felt that bathing a dog in the sacred river was disrespectful to the religious feelings of devotees. In the clip, the tourists can be seen travelling through a dusty safari route when they notice a decorated car passing by. The vehicle appeared to be part of a wedding procession.

    View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Mirela Cristina Murariu (@mirela_cristina_murariu)

At first, it looked like an ordinary roadside moment. But a few kilometres later, the same car returned and pulled up beside the tourists’ vehicle.

Groom personally invited the tourists

The groom himself leaned out of the window with a wide smile and warmly invited the tourists to attend his wedding. The spontaneous invitation surprised the group and quickly became the highlight of their day.

In her caption, Murariu wrote, “Sometimes all it takes is a honk to change the plans of the day or of life.”

She described the experience as one filled with “pure, overwhelming hospitality” without any barriers or formalities.

Murariu also said that moments like these show why India is not just a country people visit, but a place they truly experience through its people and culture. Her caption translated in English as:

Sometimes all it takes is a honk to change the plans of the day… or even your life! ✨

During our safari journey, with the wind in our hair, dust all around us, and adrenaline rushing through our veins, we passed a very special car. A few kilometres later, that same car honked at us and pulled alongside us. Then, the groom himself leaned out of the window with the biggest smile in the world and handed us an invitation to his wedding.

No formalities, no barriers. Just the overwhelming, pure and heartwarming hospitality of the Indian people. We arrived as tourists, but thanks to a chance meeting on the road, we suddenly became “guests of honour.”

India is not just a place you visit, it is something you experience. And today, it taught us that friendship can begin anywhere, even between roaring engines and the chaos of a road leading to the jungle.

#IncredibleIndia #WeddingInvitation #IndianHospitality #TravelStories #OnTheRoad #UnexpectedFriendships #SafariLife #TravelCommunity

Video crosses one million views

The video soon spread across Instagram and crossed more than 1.3 million views.
