A woman allegedly walked into a jewellery shop in Jaipur, asked to see some rings and then made a sudden dash for the door with a box containing gold jewellery worth around Rs 20 lakh. The incident took place at Bhawani Jewellers in Laxmi Nagar on Niwaru Road at around 11.45am, according to a complaint filed by jeweller Trilok Chand Prajapat. The entire incident was captured on CCTV, reported Bhaskar.

She kept looking at rings before making a run

According to Prajapat's complaint, the woman entered the shop and asked to see rings. He placed a box containing 25 gold rings in front of her. She selected two rings and asked about their prices. She then told the jeweller that she would call her father to make an online payment.

While she continued looking at the jewellery, Prajapat began attending to another customer. Police said the woman allegedly used the opportunity to pick up the entire box and run out of the shop.

Jeweller and employee chased her

Prajapat and one of his employees immediately ran after her. They reportedly chased the woman for around 500 metres before catching her and recovering the jewellery box.

She was then handed over to Jhotwara police. According to the jeweller, the woman made an unusual statement after she was caught, allegedly saying, “I did this because I want to go to jail.”

Chilli powder and spray allegedly found in purse

The jeweller also told police that a search of the woman's purse allegedly revealed red chilli powder and an irritant spray.

Prajapat said the woman had received a phone call shortly before grabbing the jewellery. After ending the call and putting her phone away, she allegedly picked up the box and ran.

He also claimed that another person who had been with the woman fled after seeing people chase her.

Police will have to establish whether the woman had planned the alleged theft with anyone else.

CCTV captures the alleged theft

The CCTV footage from inside the shop reportedly shows the woman leaving with the jewellery box.

Prajapat filed a complaint at Jhotwara police station on Friday, alleging that the woman had attempted to steal the gold rings.

The circumstances surrounding the woman's alleged statement about wanting to go to jail, as well as the role of the suspected accomplice, remain part of the investigation.

Police yet to clarify details

Attempts to contact Jhotwara SHO Raisal Singh for a response were unsuccessful, added the Bhaskar report.

ACP Jhotwara Shiv Kumar Bhardwaj initially said he was unaware of the incident and would check with the station house officer. He also could not be reached later for further comment.

The man then used what appeared to be a broom or similar household object to shoo the dog away. He swung the object towards the animal a few times, apparently trying to frighten it rather than cause an injury.

The dog eventually backed away and ran from the spot.

A 24-year-old pregnant woman died after a speeding car crashed into people standing by the roadside in Jhansi on Raksha Bandhan night. The victim, identified as Palak, had come to her maternal home in Khushipura to celebrate the festival with her brother and family. Palak, who lived in Lalitpur, arrived at her maternal home on Monday evening. Later, she went out for dinner with around 10 to 11 members of her family.

Palak was three months pregnant

After eating at a restaurant, the group stepped outside and stood near an ice-cream cart by the roadside. Within moments, a car reportedly approached at high speed and crashed into the cart and people nearby, Aaj Tak reported. Palak suffered serious injuries in the collision. She was taken to hospital, where she died during treatment. She was three months pregnant.

Her father, Sudama Singh, said three members of the family were injured. His wife suffered serious internal injuries to her leg, while another relative sustained an injury and swelling in the hand.

Car hit people and vehicles

According to the family, the car had four to five people inside. They alleged that it was travelling at high speed and overturned after hitting the people. Some occupants allegedly tried to leave the scene.

The vehicle reportedly continued hitting people and vehicles near Parshuram Chowk, including an e-rickshaw, a car and motorcyclists. The ice-cream vendor was also seriously injured.

Another family was caught up in the crash while celebrating a birthday. Priyanshu, a local resident, had come to the area with five members of his family. Several of them were injured.

Driver arrested

Police reached the spot soon after receiving information about the crash. With help from local residents, the injured were taken to hospital. Navabad police officer Ravi Srivastava said the alleged driver, identified as Shivaan, was arrested near the Municipal Corporation gate and taken to the police station for questioning.

Police completed the inquest proceedings on Palak's body and sent it for post-mortem examination. Further investigation is underway to establish how the crash happened and determine the accused driver's role.

According to police, the incident happened between 3 pm and 4 pm on September 3. Faisal allegedly confronted Kajalben and her friend Ravi Gohil after suspecting that the two were in a relationship, reported India Today.

The argument reportedly escalated, with Faisal allegedly throwing Kajalben to the ground before punching and kicking her. She suffered serious injuries, including injuries to her head and other vital parts of her body.

Ravi tried to intervene but was also allegedly assaulted and injured.

CCTV captures assault

The attack was recorded by CCTV cameras installed at the bus stand. The footage reportedly shows people in the area as the assault took place.

However, Ravi told police that the immediate dispute was over drinking alcohol.

City DySP R.R. Singhal said Faisal and Kajalben had been living together for about seven years. Police also said Faisal had previously been jailed in connection with another crime.

After his release, he allegedly learnt that Kajalben was in a relationship with his friend Ravi, which police believe contributed to the confrontation.

Kajalben dies in hospital

Following the assault, Kajalben was rushed to hospital for treatment. She died from her injuries on September 4. Police reached the spot after the incident and questioned Ravi, who had also suffered injuries. Kajalben’s body was sent for post-mortem examination before the required legal procedures were completed.

Following a complaint by Kajalben’s mother, police registered a murder case against Faisal and arrested him.

DySP Singhal said Faisal has previous criminal cases, including robbery and physical assault offences. Further investigation and legal proceedings are underway.

The bus hit the roadside railing before overturning. Fire Service officials said excessive speed was the preliminary reason for the driver losing control. The crash left several passengers trapped inside the vehicle. Two rescue teams from Sreenagar Fire Station rushed to the spot after receiving information about the accident.

Eight passengers seriously injured

Rescuers pulled the injured passengers from the overturned bus and took them to Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex in Fire Service ambulances.

The injured were identified as Saifullah, 80; Md Lutfar, 63; Rebeka Khatun, 40; Nur Islam, 46; Rashida, 40; Fatema, 7; Saif, 23; and Arafat, 13.

The accident also affected traffic on the Dhaka-bound side of the route. Movement was disrupted for around 45 minutes while the overturned bus was removed and the road was cleared.

CCTV footage of the incident has also emerged, showing the bus losing control as it travelled down the approach road at the Mawa end. Reports said the vehicle struck railings before overturning.

Love Story That Began on Social Media Ends in Murder: Jhansi Woman Strangled by Husband

A woman was allegedly strangled to death at her home in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi following an argument with her husband. According to police officials, her husband, identified as 28-year-old Yash Thakur, is currently absconding and police teams are searching for him. The victim has been identified as Sudha, also known as Shivani, a native of Indergarh in Madhya Pradesh. She had been living in Jhansi's Sipri Bazar area for around three months.

What happened inside the house?

According to Shivani’s family, she and Yash went to sleep late on Sunday night after an argument. Shivani’s 18-year-old younger sister Muskan was sleeping in an adjoining room.

Muskan said that at around 1.30 am to 2 am, Yash asked for his bag, claiming that he needed to take some belongings. After receiving the bag, he allegedly latched the door from outside and left.

Muskan later tried to open her own room around 5 am to use the bathroom but found that its door had also been latched from outside. She said she called out to Shivani and Yash for nearly half an hour but received no response. She eventually went back to sleep.

At around 9 am, Shivani’s brother Aniket reached the house. He found the door to Shivani’s room latched from outside and opened it.

Shivani was found lying unconscious on the floor.

The family rushed her to the Medical College, where doctors declared her dead.

Family accuses husband of murder

Aniket alleged that Shivani had marks on her neck and that blood was coming from her ear. He and Muskan accused Yash of killing Shivani before locking the rooms from outside and fleeing.

Police initially found an injury mark on Shivani’s neck, while no other obvious injuries were reported.

CO Ramveer Singh said the body was sent for post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

A two-doctor panel later conducted the post-mortem. According to the doctors, Shivani had been strangled to death. Five injuries were reportedly found on her neck and face.

Police suspect that a rope or a piece of clothing may have been used in the alleged strangulation.

Couple met on social media

Muskan said Shivani had met Yash, who is from Gwalior, on social media around two years ago. The two reportedly fell in love and informed their families, who agreed to their marriage.

The couple married around one-and-a-half years ago and initially lived together in Gwalior.

However, Muskan alleged that Yash later began assaulting Shivani over petty issues. Shivani subsequently moved to Jhansi and rented a room near Awas Vikas Fauji Tiraha, where Muskan and Aniket also stayed.

Yash continued to visit Shivani in Jhansi occasionally, the family said.

Argument before alleged killing

A day before Raksha Bandhan, Shivani travelled to Gwalior with her younger brother Kapil. She stayed there for two days before returning to Jhansi with Yash, while Kapil returned to their village.

On Sunday night, Shivani and Yash reportedly had another argument. Muskan alleged that Yash abused her family during the dispute.

Their maternal uncle, Santosh, who lived nearby, intervened and managed to calm the situation. Muskan then went to sleep in the adjoining room, while Shivani and Yash remained together in the other room.

Police are now trying to establish what happened inside the room after that argument and before Yash allegedly left the house.

Police search for absconding husband

Yash has not been traced so far. Police teams have been deployed to locate him, while investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding Shivani’s death.

The post-mortem findings have confirmed strangulation, but investigators are continuing to establish the sequence of events and collect evidence in the case.

'54 Cancer Deaths': Five Gujarat Villages Protest Water Pollution Due To Chemical Contamination

A protest over alleged chemical contamination of drinking water has entered its 12th day in five villages of Dholka in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad district. Residents of Bhetavada, Trasad, Nesda, Paldi and Ambareli are saying that the chemical waste from factories near their homes is entering local drains and eventually affecting groundwater and borewells, according to a report by India Today. The villagers claim they have been living with the problem for nearly 15 years. They say their repeated complaints to local authorities and pollution control officials have not brought a lasting solution.

Villagers claim 54 people died of cancer

The protesters claim that 54 people from the five villages have died of cancer during the past seven years, including 21 from Bhetavada. They also say around 20 residents are currently undergoing treatment for cancer and that skin problems have become common in the area.

However, the alleged link between the water and cancer deaths has not been established. Ahmedabad Chief District Health Officer Dr Rajnikant Kapadia told India Today that the cause of cancer in the five villages needs to be investigated.

Villagers say several patients had no history of substance abuse and believe contaminated water could be a factor.

What are villagers alleging?

Residents allege that private factories discharge chemical-laden water into a drain passing through the area. They claim the same drain also carries wastewater from the villages. According to protesters, the contaminated water can seep into the ground and affect borewell water used by local residents.

They say the discharge has stopped since the protest began, but allege that factories were releasing such water until about 15 days earlier. Some residents have also accused factories of releasing the waste at night.

The Gujarat Pollution Control Board has collected water samples, according to the villagers. However, protesters claim earlier reports showed "NIL" contamination.

Drain near school raises concern

A drain carrying what residents describe as polluted water passes close to a government school in Bhetavada. Villagers claim that water from the nearby borewell has sometimes appeared contaminated, increasing concerns about the health of children attending the school.

Parents say they are particularly worried because children have also reported skin problems. A health team visited the area during the protest and provided medicines to residents suffering from skin conditions.

Families speak about years of cancer treatment

The protest has also highlighted the financial burden faced by families dealing with cancer. Fourteen-year-old Akshay Navganbhai, a Class 9 student from Bhetavada, is among those at the protest site. His family has been deeply affected by the disease. His father and grandmother died of cancer, while his uncle has undergone cancer surgery. Akshay lost his father only a month ago.

Another resident, 32-year-old Harshad Makwana, is undergoing treatment for oesophageal cancer. He said he spent around Rs 10 lakh on treatment and continues to undergo check-ups.

Harshad said his elder brother and mother had also died of cancer, with around Rs 15 lakh reportedly spent on his brother’s treatment.

Families say treatment has left them in debt

Several residents say they have had to sell jewellery, mortgage farmland or give up other financial resources to pay for treatment.

Nareshbhai said his father, Bhagwan Makwana, developed oral cancer and underwent surgery costing around Rs 5 lakh. His mother, Vilas Makwana, was later diagnosed with a stomach tumour and underwent treatment costing around Rs 4 lakh.

The family said it raised the money by selling jewellery and mortgaging farmland.

Other residents described similar experiences, including families that have spent several lakh rupees on surgeries and treatment.

Skin diseases are another concern

Residents say health problems in the villages are not limited to cancer. India Today quoted Dr Dhyey Parmar of the Ambuja Foundation health centre in Bhetavada saying that many patients visiting the centre seek treatment for skin problems.

He said skin conditions can be caused by exposure to pesticides or chemicals, although this does not by itself establish that the illnesses in the villages are caused by the alleged water contamination.

Some residents said they had been taking medicines for months and spending thousands of rupees on treatment.

Villagers now depend on RO water

Growing concerns over borewell water have pushed residents towards an RO plant installed near a village borewell. However, the plant has itself become a point of contention.

Villagers claim the RO facility belongs to the private company they are protesting against. They say residents have to pay Rs 5 for hot water and Rs 10 for cold water using a rechargeable card.

The protesters have questioned why villagers should have to pay for drinking water while alleging that the same company is responsible for pollution.

Protesters threaten march to Gandhinagar

The residents say their protest will continue until September 8. They have warned that if their concerns are not addressed, they will travel to Gandhinagar and protest near the Gujarat Legislative Assembly during its session.

The people are demanding proper testing of their water, investigation into the alleged industrial discharge and action if pollution violations are found.

The health department and pollution authorities are yet to establish whether the water is contaminated and whether there is any connection between the alleged pollution and the health problems reported by villagers.

A man in Tamil Nadu's Erode has been arrested for allegedly making a student mix powdered cow dung into sambar prepared for a government school's free breakfast scheme. The accused, identified as Arumugam, reportedly carried out the act to take revenge after his wife was removed from her job as a cook at the school.

Teachers noticed something was wrong

The incident took place on August 29, but a police complaint was filed on September 1. According to police sources, teachers tasted the food before it was served to the students as part of the school’s routine checking process. They noticed that the sambar had an unusually bitter taste.

The teachers initially suspected that the school cook may have accidentally added too much turmeric. However, further checking reportedly revealed the presence of powdered cow dung.

Students were not served the contaminated food

Police said the substance had been added only to the portion of sambar kept separately for teachers to taste. The food prepared for the students was not affected.

As the teachers detected the unusual taste before the meal was served, the contaminated food did not reach the children, police said, as reported by India Today.

Man allegedly forced a student to carry out plan

Investigators allege that Arumugam coerced a student into mixing the powdered cow dung into the food.

Police believe the alleged act was linked to his anger over his wife's dismissal from her job as a cook at the school. The investigation is continuing to establish the exact circumstances and the student's role in the incident.

Arumugam booked under BNS

Police arrested Arumugam under Section 123 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with causing hurt by means of poison or other substances with the intention of committing an offence.

The case has raised concerns over the safety of food served to children under government school meal programmes. However, police said the quick tasting check by teachers ensured that the affected food was identified before it could be served to students.

From a normal outing to sudden collapse

Vansh, a resident of Bindra Colony, had gone to a nearby swimming pool with his friends in the afternoon, according to a report by Dainik Bhaskar. According to his family, he had entered the pool once or twice before coming out and sitting at the edge with a friend who was not swimming. Everything appeared normal at first.

The CCTV footage then shows Vansh becoming uncomfortable. He raises his arms above his head and appears to stretch repeatedly before getting up and trying to walk along the poolside.

He soon began struggling to keep his balance.

As Vansh started to stagger, he quickly turned around and went back to where his friend was sitting. He then leaned his head against a wall and closed his eyes. His friend, meanwhile, was using his mobile phone to take a selfie.

It was while looking at the phone that the friend noticed something was wrong with Vansh. As seen in the video, Vansh began losing consciousness and falling. His friend immediately tried to support him and held him for around 10 to 15 seconds.

He eventually became completely unconscious and slipped to the ground.

Friends tried to save him

The friend raised an alarm, prompting other children at the pool to rush over. The youngsters tried to revive Vansh. Some rubbed his legs while another attempted CPR. They also called the swimming pool guard for help.

However, Vansh could not be revived and died at the spot.

Teen had a history of heart problems

According to his family, Vansh had previously suffered from a heart-related problem, although his condition had improved considerably.

His parents reportedly encouraged him to enjoy time with his friends and he often went swimming. The exact medical cause of his sudden death has not been established in the information available. His collapse followed complaints of discomfort and chest pain, but only medical examination can determine the precise cause.

Vansh's parents and his younger sister live in Bindra Colony. After completing his final rites, his parents travelled to Haridwar on Saturday to immerse his ashes.

The eight students, all from Tamil Nadu, were killed when their car crashed into the rear of a parked goods lorry on the under-construction National Highway 66 in Thrissur district late Friday night.

The accident took place at around 11.42pm at Panambikkunnu Centre in the Kaipamangalam area.

Police said the car was travelling from Guruvayur towards Kodungallur when it approached a diversion on the highway. The vehicle reportedly hit the parked lorry at high speed.

The impact was devastating. The front of the car was pushed completely underneath the heavy vehicle, trapping the occupants inside.

Residents, police and fire and rescue personnel rushed to the scene after hearing the crash. Rescuers had to cut open the badly damaged car to reach the passengers.

All eight occupants died at the scene.

The victims were students of PSNA College of Engineering and Technology in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu.

Police identified five of them as Surya, Yuvasanjith, Joshua, Murali and Jeeva, all from Dindigul. Santhosh and Prasanna were from Madurai, while Vishva was from Salem.

Their families have been informed about the deaths. The bodies were sent for post-mortem examinations at Thrissur Medical College and will be handed over to relatives after the procedures are completed.

Preliminary police findings suggest that the students had travelled to Keralam for a holiday.

Police said some of their families were not aware that the youngsters had made the trip.

The newly surfaced video has now added an emotional dimension to the tragedy. The students appear relaxed and happy as they spend time together, unaware that their journey would end in a fatal crash.

Thrissur Rural District Police Chief Mohammad Nadeem said the manner in which the goods lorry had been parked was a major factor in the crash.

The lorry, registered in Maharashtra, had been left near a diversion on the highway despite restrictions on heavy vehicles parking in such a manner.

The driver allegedly fled immediately after the collision. Police have registered a case under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

A special investigation team has been formed to trace the driver, and police have located the lorry's owner.

Police said the investigation will not be limited to the lorry driver.

Authorities will also examine the role of the National Highways Authority of India and the contractor involved in the road work. Investigators will check whether adequate warning signs, barricades and other safety measures had been put in place around the diversion.

The investigation will determine how the accident happened and whether failures in highway safety contributed to the deaths.

Police on Elachipalayam accident

Police said Kalaichelvi had picked up her two sisters and Abinaya from their school near Elachipalayam and was taking them home on the moped when the crash occurred.

The impact threw all four riders off the two-wheeler. Kalaichelvi and Nivedha died at the spot, while Dhanushree and Abinaya died while being taken to hospital, police said.

The bus involved in the crash belongs to a private educational institution near Rasipuram.

Elachipalayam police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. The bus driver, identified as 30-year-old Praveen of Rasipuram, surrendered at Tiruchengode police station.

Family left devastated

Kalaichelvi, Nivedha and Dhanushree were the daughters of vegetable traders Sekar and Amudha. Their cousin Abinaya was the daughter of Sekar’s brother Rameshbabu and Vasantha.

Kalaichelvi’s education had reportedly been supported by former district collector S Uma, as her father is suffering from cancer.

In her complaint, Archana alleged that she was at home with her son, Samar Pandit, when Guddu Pandit arrived unexpectedly. When she opened the door, she claimed he pushed her forcefully, causing her to fall to the floor, before allegedly assaulting her.

According to Archana, a domestic worker heard her screams and began recording the incident on a mobile phone. She alleged that Pandit backed away after noticing that he was being filmed.

Archana said she then ran towards the road to protect herself and informed the police.

'I fear for my life'

Archana has also alleged that she and her son have repeatedly received death threats from Pandit and members of his family. She claimed that her divorce case against Pandit is currently pending in court and alleged that he wants her to withdraw the case.

According to her complaint, she believes the alleged harassment is connected to the ongoing divorce proceedings. She has sought protection, including the deployment of women police personnel around the clock, saying she fears for her safety.

These allegations have not yet been established in court.

Bulandshahr City Circle Officer Prakhar Pandey said police had received Archana's complaint and were examining the video that has surfaced.

Archana Pandit’s political journey

She later joined the Congress in Lucknow and currently holds a position in the party's women's organisation in Uttar Pradesh.

Nine days after devastating floods hit Nepal, hydropower worker Sanjay Sah was rescued alive from the Trishuli-3A tunnel. Trapped in darkness, Sah said he kept chanting the Krishna Mahamantra while waiting for help.

For nearly 10 days, Sanjay Sah was trapped inside a dark tunnel in Nepal, unsure whether he would ever see daylight again. As rescue teams worked to reach him, Sah said he held on to hope by chanting the Krishna Mahamantra.

Sah, a mechanical foreman from Saptari, was among two workers pulled alive from the debris-filled Trishuli-3A Hydropower Project tunnel on Friday, nearly 10 days after devastating floods and debris swept through the region.

His account of those days has emerged as one of the most emotional stories from the Nepal disaster, not only because he survived, but because he said his first instinct during the disaster was to try to save others.

After being rescued, Sah told the Nepal Army's medical team about the ordeal he faced inside the tunnel, reported Aaj Tak.

He said that during the most difficult moments, he kept chanting the Krishna Mahamantra and what makes this even more miraculous is that today happens to be Janmashtami. With darkness around him and no certainty about when help would arrive, the chanting became a source of hope as he waited for rescuers.

Sah also said he believed that a rescue team would eventually reach him.

His survival came after days of uncertainty, with rescuers battling huge amounts of mud and debris to reach workers trapped inside the hydropower tunnel.

Sah was working inside the project's control room when the disaster struck.

According to his account, around 40 to 45 people were present there at the time. Normally, the control room would have only one operator and four or five other people, but a large number of people had gathered there when the disaster hit.

Sah said he immediately told everyone to get out.

His responsibility at the control room was to ensure people's safety, and he focused on helping others escape first. By the time he tried to make his own way out, the situation had changed and it was too late.

The floodwater and debris had entered the tunnel, leaving him trapped inside.

Inside the tunnel, Sah said he was able to communicate with only three or four people nearby, either by speaking to them directly or by calling out and hearing their voices.

But he feared there could have been more people trapped deeper inside the long tunnel.

Sah said the tunnel extended a considerable distance and that some workers may have been carried further inside by the force of the water. He also expressed concern that not everyone might have managed to escape.

His comments could add to the questions surrounding the fate of other workers still unaccounted for following the disaster.

Sah was not the only worker to emerge alive from the tunnel.

Kabir Maharjan, who was from Kathmandu and had worked at the Trishuli-3A project for around seven years, was also rescued on Friday.

His wife, Heera Shobha, described his return as getting a 'second life'.

For days, the family had been waiting anxiously for news. She said the uncertainty had made it difficult for them to eat or sleep properly, but they continued to believe that Maharjan was alive and would eventually return.

She last spoke to her husband at around 7:30 am on the morning of the disaster. Soon afterwards, the floods changed everything.

The two men were rescued by the Nepali Army and Armed Police Force, with assistance from foreign rescue teams.

Their survival came after days of intensive search operations at the hydropower project, one of several sites badly hit by the floods and massive debris flows.

The rescue has provided a rare moment of hope amid a disaster that has left thousands dead or missing across Nepal and Tibet.

For Sah, however, the story is also about what happened before rescuers reached him.

He first tried to get others out of danger. Then, trapped in darkness for days, he waited for his own chance to be saved, keeping himself going by chanting the Mahamantra.

The scale of the disaster remains enormous.

Nepal's disaster authority has reported 1,259 bodies recovered and 5,083 people missing. Across the border in Tibet, Chinese state media has reported 21 deaths and 541 missing.

The combined reported toll is therefore 1,280 dead and 5,624 missing.

More than 800 foreigners from at least 34 countries are also reportedly among those missing in Nepal and Tibet, including tourists and pilgrims.

Against that backdrop, the rescue of Sah and Maharjan has offered families and rescuers a powerful reminder that hope can survive even in the most desperate conditions.

The district administration has been monitoring the situation and preparing protection, relief and evacuation measures in areas considered vulnerable.

Bhagalpur District Magistrate Alankrita Pandey has also appealed to residents to remain alert. People have been advised to prioritise the safety of family members, essential belongings and livestock, while following official instructions.

Police were informed about the incident and reached the hospital soon after. They inspected the scene and began collecting evidence as part of their investigation.

CCTV helped police trace the accused

Police reached the spot after receiving information and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. CCTV footage from the neighbourhood became a key breakthrough. Investigators reportedly noticed Parvati leaving the house in suspicious circumstances and later traced her to Aurobindo Hospital, where she had gone to meet her husband, who was admitted there.

Accused detained for questioning

According to police, Parvati told investigators that she and Vandana had argued after latter made a remark about her brother. The argument allegedly turned violent and Parvati attacked Vandana with a knife.

Police said Vandana was stabbed twice in the neck and died from her injuries.

Body allegedly hidden in water tank

After the killing, Parvati allegedly dragged Vandana's body outside the house and put it inside a water tank in an attempt to conceal the crime.

Police said the accused initially tried to mislead investigators but later confessed during questioning. The knife was recovered based on information provided by her.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Narendra Singh Rawat said the case was solved within hours with the help of CCTV footage and prompt police action.

Love marriage had reportedly caused family tension

Police said Vandana had married Upendra in a love marriage on August 11. The relationship had reportedly not been accepted by some members of the family.

There was also alleged resentment over Vandana's substance use, according to the police account.

After the marriage, Upendra reportedly left the New Nehru Nagar house and moved into rented accommodation in Raj Nagar. Vandana later went missing, following which a missing-person complaint was reportedly filed at Chandan Nagar police station.

Sisters-in-law were reportedly alone at home on the day of crime

Police said the fatal confrontation took place on Raksha Bandhan when Vandana and Parvati were reportedly the only two people at the house.

Parvati's children had gone to school, while her husband and brother-in-law were at a hospital, police said.

Following the discovery of Vandana's body, investigators examined CCTV recordings from the area and reconstructed Parvati's movements around the suspected time of the killing.

Investigation continues

Police have registered a murder case against Parvati and arrested her. Vandana's body was sent for a post-mortem examination before being handed over to her family.

Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the killing and the events that led to the dispute between the two women.

Usman is the uncle of Bilari MLA Mohammad Faheem Irfan. He had reportedly gone to the Circuit House to meet Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, Lal Bihari Yadav, who was staying there.

What happened at the Circuit House?

According to officials, the district administration had received the protocol for Yadav's stay and made arrangements at the Circuit House accordingly.

After a review meeting with SP leaders ended, Usman went outside and offered namaz near the lawn. An SP worker recorded the incident, and the video later circulated widely online, according to a report by Bhaskar English.

The administration has not said that Usman was formally granted permission to use the Circuit House for prayers. Moradabad City Additional District Magistrate Ankit Srivastava said an investigation was underway and that action would follow.

An FIR has since been registered against Usman under Sections 285 and 292 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The provisions relate to causing danger or obstruction in a public way and public nuisance.

Hindu group questions prayer at government premises

Rohan Saxena, state president of the Rashtriya Bajrang Dal, questioned how the prayer was allowed at the government facility.

He asked the administration to clarify whether any rule permitted a legislator's relative or a political leader to offer prayers at the Circuit House. He also demanded action if no such permission existed.

The controversy has since widened on social media, with some users describing the incident as an individual's exercise of faith, while others have questioned religious activities at government property.

What did Haji Mohammad Usman say?

Usman defended his action, saying offering namaz was a matter of worship. He said people sometimes pray wherever they happen to be when prayer time arrives and maintained that his prayers neither blocked a road nor caused inconvenience to anyone.

Usman also referred to religious practices associated with public events and government programmes, arguing that there should not be different standards for different faiths.

Allahabad High Court ruling on public land

The controversy comes months after an important observation by the Allahabad High Court. In May 2026, a Division Bench of Justices Saral Srivastava and Garima Prasad held that public land cannot be claimed for exclusive religious use. The court said the right to practise religion is subject to public order and the rights of others.

The ruling came in a case from Sambhal, where a petitioner had sought protection to offer namaz on land he claimed was private. The court found the land was recorded as public land and said authorities could regulate religious activity where it affected public life or involved organised gatherings.

However, the court's ruling concerned the use of public land and organised or recurring religious activity. It does not mean that every individual act of private prayer is automatically illegal. The circumstances and nature of the activity remain important.

Usman has faced controversies before

This is not the first controversy involving Usman. During the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign, a case was reportedly registered against him over allegations of violating the Model Code of Conduct and making an inflammatory speech at an SP rally addressed by party chief Akhilesh Yadav.

His name also surfaced in a dispute over caste certificates. In 2026, a district-level verification committee found that OBC certificates issued to Mohammad Faheem Irfan, Usman and members of Usman's family on the basis of the Jhojha caste claim did not comply with the applicable rules. The certificates were subsequently cancelled.

Usman has previously served as a district panchayat member and headed his ancestral village, Ibrahimpur.

The latest controversy now centres on whether the prayer near the Circuit House amounted to unauthorised use of a government facility. The district administration's inquiry is expected to establish the exact circumstances under which Usman offered namaz and whether any rules were violated.

A 21-year-old man and his 20-year-old girlfriend were arrested in Telangana’s Khammam district for allegedly transporting 12 kg of ganja, with police claiming the man wanted to sell the drugs to raise money for an iPhone birthday gift for his girlfriend. The accused have been identified as Mithra Chaitanya, 21, and Hemalatha, 20, both reportedly residents of Peddapalli district. According to police, the couple travelled to Odisha, where they allegedly purchased around 12 kg of ganja for approximately Rs 16,000. They then reportedly set off for Hyderabad on a motorcycle, allegedly planning to sell the contraband for around Rs 6 lakh.

Couple caught during vehicle checking in Wyra

The alleged drug run came to an end in the Wyra area of Khammam district, where the Eagle Force and Wyra police were conducting vehicle checks.

Police said officers attempted to stop the motorcycle carrying Chaitanya and Hemalatha. According to investigators, Chaitanya allegedly accelerated after noticing the police and tried to escape.

Police teams chased the motorcycle and attempted to stop it. During the pursuit, the bike reportedly lost balance and crashed.

Wyra Sub-Inspector Puppala Rama Rao, Chaitanya and Hemalatha suffered minor injuries in the incident, according to police.

The couple were subsequently taken into custody.

12 kg ganja, motorcycle and phones seized

A search allegedly led to the recovery of 12 kg of dry ganja from the accused. Police also seized the motorcycle allegedly used to transport the drugs and four mobile phones.

The seized material is now being examined as part of the investigation into the alleged supply route between Odisha and Hyderabad.

Police link alleged drug deal to iPhone birthday gift

During questioning, Chaitanya allegedly told police that he wanted to buy Hemalatha an iPhone for her birthday. Police claim that he decided to raise the money through ganja trafficking.

The alleged plan was to buy the drug cheaply in Odisha and transport it to Hyderabad, where it could reportedly be sold for a much higher price.

However, investigators have also found that Chaitanya was allegedly not new to drug-related offences.

Accused already facing three NDPS cases

Police said Chaitanya already has three cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The cases were reportedly registered in Peddapalli, Uppal and Medchal.

According to police, Chaitanya was released on bail on April 30 this year. Investigators now allege that he subsequently became involved in another case involving the transportation of ganja, Aaj Tak reported.

The latest arrest could therefore have wider implications for the investigation into his alleged links with drug suppliers and buyers.

Three others wanted in alleged ganja network

Police have also identified three other people who are allegedly connected to the supply chain. According to investigators, Bhagwan Hantal allegedly arranged the ganja in Odisha. In Hyderabad, Shashi and Nagoor were allegedly supposed to receive and purchase the consignment.

Police have declared the three men wanted and are searching for them.

Investigation into Odisha-Hyderabad drug route continues

Investigators are now trying to establish how the alleged network operated and whether more people were involved in transporting and distributing the drugs.

Police are questioning Chaitanya and Hemalatha to identify other possible links in the alleged supply chain.

The investigation is also expected to focus on the movement of the 12-kg consignment from Odisha towards Hyderabad and the people allegedly involved in arranging its sale.

The arrests came after what police described as a routine vehicle-checking operation in Wyra, which ultimately led officers to the alleged drug consignment and exposed a wider network under investigation.
