This new price hike will apply to all models, from the entry-level Grand i10 Nios to the premium Ioniq 5 electric SUV. Currently, Hyundai cars are priced between approximately ₹5.60 lakh and ₹55.70 lakh. The exact price increase in September will be decided based on each specific model and variant.

This is the third time Hyundai is increasing its car prices in 2026. The company first raised prices by about 0.6% on January 1. Following that, they announced another 1% hike in April, which became effective from June 1. That hike increased car prices by up to ₹12,800, depending on the model. Hyundai's business has faced several challenges this year. In the first quarter of FY 2026-27 (April-June), the company's exports saw a major drop. Tensions in the Middle East and a fire at the factory of its supplier, 'Mobis', temporarily hit production and impacted exports.

During the same period last fiscal year, Hyundai had exported 48,140 vehicles. However, in the first quarter of FY 2026-27, exports fell to 38,708 units, which is a drop of about 19.6%. Hyundai has stated that it is implementing the new price hike from September considering the rising raw material costs and the uncertainty in the global economic situation.

India’s shift to ethanol-blended petrol has accelerated and stirred a nationwide debate. Policymakers and parts of the auto industry defend E20 by pointing to racing series, arguing that ethanol can boost performance. But the comparison between an everyday hatchback and a car lapping a circuit at 300 km/h is proving far from straightforward.

The original plan targeted 2030 for E20 at retail pumps. That deadline was pulled forward by five years to 2025–26, and from 1 April 2026 E20 became the base fuel across ordinary petrol pumps. Neat petrol without ethanol now survives only as a limited, pricier “premium” option.

Policy Shift And Consumer Choice

This has left owners of millions of older vehicles, designed for E0 or lower blends, without a real choice. Critics also flag the pace of rollout, the lack of clear pump labeling, and no price relief despite expected efficiency losses.

The government’s racing analogy is incomplete. Formula 1 cars never ran on 20% ethanol; they spent years on E10, which India has now phased out, and F1 has since moved to 100% synthetic fuel.

Engine life is incomparable: a racing engine (such as in NASCAR) is torn down after roughly 800 to 1500 kilometers, while consumer cars are expected to run 200,000 to 300,000 kilometers without opening the engine.

Racing Fuel Isn’t Real-World Motoring

Fuel handling is different, too. On a racetrack, fuel is blended fresh and burned within hours. In daily use and at retail stations, fuel can sit for weeks. Ethanol is hygroscopic, pulling moisture from humid air.

In monsoon or coastal conditions, excess water can trigger phase separation, the petrol layer floats up while a heavier ethanol, water layer sinks. Dispensers draw from the bottom, raising the risk of stalling and corrosion when that mixture reaches the vehicle.

Officials reject social-media claims of a 30% mileage crash, and the data supports that rebuttal. Still, mileage declines do occur because ethanol has lower calorific value. A 2021 NITI Aayog report notes that legacy E0-designed vehicles can see 6% to 7% lower fuel efficiency on E20. Maruti Suzuki has indicated a 3% to 3.5% hit with E20.

Mileage, Data And International Practice

Brazil shows a different path: about 80% of new cars are flex fuel, subsidies help offset efficiency losses, and consumers choose what to buy at the pump. In India, speed trumped choice. More than 90,000 pumps need proper cleaning and relining to store E20 safely, yet no independent public audit shows how many are truly upgraded.

The government says ethanol blending has delivered major gains, about ₹2 lakh crore saved on crude imports, some environmental benefit, and money flowing to farmers via sugar mills. But citing racing cars does not settle concerns over engine life, real-world mileage, and the effective loss of fuel choice for many drivers.

The most important question that arises is straightforward: Who bears the cost of the damage? The answer depends less on the weather and more on the insurance policy sitting in your glove box.

Insurance experts believe reimbursement is available for monsoon-related damage, but only if the car is insured under a comprehensive motor insurance policy. Owners depending entirely on the necessary third-party insurance should not anticipate payment for damage to their own car.

As per NDTV report, Atrey Bhardwaj, Chief Growth Officer at Probus, a thorough strategy is essential for shielding a car from damages brought on by flooding, torrential rain, waterlogging, and other monsoon-related events. A basic third-party insurance, he points out, gives no protection for damage to the owner's own automobile.

Shashi Kant Dahuja, Executive Director and Chief Underwriting Officer of Shriram General Insurance, echoed the same stance. According to him, comprehensive automobile insurance often covers damages stemming from floods, waterlogging, landslides and even events when trees fall on parked vehicles.

Mistakes That Could Cost You Your Insurance Claim

Ironically, the most damage frequently occurred after the flooding. Experts uniformly caution against trying to restart a vehicle that has stalled in deep water.

Bhardwaj says if water has entered the engine and the owner attempts to restart it, the subsequent engine damage is often recognised as consequential loss under a basic comprehensive coverage. Unless the car has an Engine Protection add-on, the insurance may reject that part of the claim. Additionally, Dahuja cautions owners against starting submerged or extremely wet cars since it might exacerbate engine damage that might not be covered by the standard coverage.

What To Do If Your Vehicle Is Damaged?

The primary objective is safety. Experts instruct motorists to prioritise the safety of all passengers before thinking about the car. He also advocates avoiding flooded roadways if possible.

Once the car is stuck, experts recommend keeping it untouched. Instead of trying repairs or restarting the engine, owners should immediately tell their insurance, take pictures or record videos of the damage, and wait for the insurer's surveyor to check the car.

Experts also recommends owners to tow the car to an official workshop instead of driving it and to prevent any repairs until the insurance completes its examination.

You are also advised to prepare before the rains by servicing their vehicles, checking tyres, batteries and wipers, and keeping policy documents, insurer helpline numbers and roadside assistance details readily accessible.

Who Pays The Compensation?

If the claim is genuine, the insurer -- not any public body -- pays for the harm.

For car owners, the lesson is obvious. Monsoon damage can be expensive, but the correct insurance coverage, quick reporting and avoiding one costly error -- restarting a flooded car -- can make the difference between a completely compensated repair bill and a significant expense from your own pocket.
