Bengaluru: World champion shuttler PV Sindhu on Thursday (March 26) donated Rs 5 lakh each to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to fight against the deadly novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

India is under a 21-day lockdown to combat the spread of coronavirus. So far, over 500 coronavirus cases have been reported in the country. People are staying at home after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a three-week lockdown.

All sports events have been either cancelled or postponed due to coronavirus. Tokyo Olympics 2020 has been postponed to next year.

Sindhu took to the micro-blogging website Twitter to announce that she is donating Rs 5 lakh each to the chief minister’s relief fund in both states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

“I hereby donate an amount of Rs 5,00,000/-  each (Rs five lakhs ) towards the "Chief Ministers Relief Fund"  for the States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to fight against COVID-19. @TelanganaCMO @AndhraPradeshCM (sic),” Sindhu tweeted.

Yesterday (March 25), Sindhu had posted a video message on her Twitter account urging everyone to stay at home. “Please stay safe #stayhome We are a great nation and in this very difficult time let’s all fight together and overcome this #COVIDー19 (sic).”

Sindhu had won a silver medal at 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She had said that she is aiming to win gold at Tokyo Olympics.
