TN-Karnataka cops joint operation: 61 Lankans who entered India illegally arrested, report sent to MEA

A tip by the intelligence department and lead from TN police has led to the arrest of 61 Sri Lankan nationals from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on Friday. As per reports, agents on the promise of job in Canada brought these illegal Lankans via sea route. Out of 61, 38 managed to reach Mangaluru and were staying in different lodges while 23 others were staying in Madurai in TN.

A tip from the intelligence wing of TN and joint operation by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu cops resulted in the arrest of 61 Sri Lankans from Madurai and Mangaluru on Friday.

The accused entered India illegally via sea route and were planning to leave for Canada. While 38 were arrested from Mangaluru, 23 were held in Madurai on the same day.

Talking to Asianet Newsable, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner N Shashikumar said," 38 persons were arrested from different lodges and houses and produced before the court and have been remanded to judicial custody. We has sought police custody of 4 persons among them for further inquiry."

The officer further added that a report has also been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs so that the embassy will also be communicated about the development.

The police also have arrested 6 locals for helping these illegal immigrants right from staying to arranging food and other facilities.

As per reports, an agent after taking 6 to 10 lakh Sri Lankan currencies, brought them to India on the promise of sending them to Canada via sea route in container vessels and cargo vessels. First, they entered via Toothukudi on March 17, and due to assembly elections and massive checking across Tamil Nadu check posts, they stayed in Madurai and Salem lodges and later some of them were sent to Bengaluru for a brief stay. Later 38 of them moved to Mangaluru and were staying in lodges and houses in Mangaluru City and were waiting for others to join them and then to board into vessels.
