NGT committee inspects rejuvenation of Varthur, Bellandur lakes

The committee headed by UV Singh collected stratified samples from the lakes and also observed the quality of water in the lakes. The committee and state government have been given deadline from the NGT to show improvement in the lakes.

Bengaluru: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) constituted committee paid a visit to Varthur and Bellandur lakes for inspection.

The NGT committee, which is headed by Justice N Santosh Hegde, along with officials from KSPCB, BDA, Revenue, Minor Irrigation department and scientists from Indian Institute of Science took stock of rejuvenation progress.

Led by committee member UV Singh, the officials collected stratified samples from the lakes even as the reviving work was in progress. 

UV Singh was seen observing the water quality in Varthur and Bellandur lakes. The rejuvenation process has involved diversion of channels to alter the flow of water. However, the process is in its finishing stages and the flow of water has been diverted after the channels were tracked.

With the rejuvenation process underway, the lakes in Bellandur, Varthur and Agara are all set to get water a quality monitoring station with Varthur lake getting sensors installed in the wastewater tunnels.

NGT has given the committee an extension and the state government time to show results on the improvement of Bellandur and Varthur lakes. The tenure of the committee has been extended by the NGT till March 2020 and the NGT has set September 2020 as the final deadline to ensure that Bellandur and Varthur lakes are improved.

The NGT has set a target to bring life back into the lakes before the oncoming monsoon. The BDA, which estimates the cost of rejuvenation at Rs 500 crore, has only a few months left to de-water, de-silt the two massive lakes.
