The Central Bureau of Investigation has formally taken over the probe into the death of Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad chief Mahant Narendra Giri.

A six-member team from the Special Crime Unit of the CBI has been constituted to probe the seer's death.

The CBI team is expected to reach Prayagraj by later afternoon following which the officials will seek custody of the three accused persons whose names figure in the alleged suicide letter written by the Akhada Parishad chief.

The team will also be meeting the investigating officer of the police station at which the case for abetment to suicide had been filed.

The CBI officials will be questioning the deceased seer's controversial disciple Anand Giri who had alleged that Mahant Narendra Giri's death was not a case of suicide but that of murder.

Also to be questioned will be the five-member team of doctors who had conducted the autopsy on the seer's remains. The autopsy report had indicated that Mahant Narendra Giri may have died of asphyxiation.

According to CBI sources, the agency is investigating all possibilities as far as the death of Mahant Narendra Giri is concerned.

The seer, who headed the highest decision-making body of 13 Akhadas, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his residence at the Baghambari Gaddi Math in Prayagraj on Monday.

In the alleged suicide note, Mahant Narendra Giri reportedly named his disciple Anand Giri, Bade Hanuman Temple priest Aadya Tiwari, and his son Sandeep Tiwari of harassment.

The Uttar Pradesh government had on Thursday recommended for a CBI probe into the case on the directives of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who recently asserted that those responsible for the seer's death will be brought to justice.
