Kerala school denies admission for leaving religion column blank in application form

Thiruvananthapuram: A school in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram has allegedly denied admission to a 6-year-old boy to Class 1. According to reports, the admission was denied as the parents didn't fill up the religion column in the school application form.
The boy's father told media that the school authorities had a problem in giving our son an admission as we didn't fill the religion column in the school application form. He added that the school authorities question why they didn't fill the religion column adding that it would create problem during the admission process.
Naseem, the 6-year-old's father, has lodged a complaint with the Kerala education department. He also urged the government to give a strong direction to all schools to not discourage parents who don’t want to reveal the religion of their children.
Meanwhile, the school authorities have refused the allegation. According to reports, the school said that it didn’t deny admission to the boy, but instead asked the parents to give it in writing that they don’t want to fill the column on religion.
St Mary’s School is one of the largest schools in Asia which is run by Major Archdiocese of Syro-Malankara Catholic Church in Thiruvananthapuram. The 80-year-old school has more than 13,000 students.
