Historian Ramachandra Guha had earlier said that young India does not want a "fifth-generation dynast” and if Kerala repeats the disaster of re-electing Rahul Gandhi to Parliament in 2024, then they will merely hand over the advantage to "hard-working" and "self-made" Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Several media organisations began to wonder where the “real Guha" is.
Follow"My statement has been distorted," said historian Ramachandra Guha, adding, "It was a casual joke made in Kerala." Guha accused media organisations of misreporting his statement, clarifying that "Narendra Modi is hardworking is a fact and the Prime Minister being self-made is a fact".
The real fight is against Hindutva, Guha claimed. "If one needs to fight Hindutva or the BJP, it doesn't mean we elect the Congress," he said, adding that his fight was not against PM Modi.

"Why did you (residents of Kerala) elect Rahul Gandhi to the Parliament? I have nothing against Rahul Gandhi personally. He is a decent fellow, very well-mannered. But young India does not want a fifth-generation dynast," Guha had said while speaking at Kerala Literature Festival in Kozhikode.
If Malayalis make the mistake of re-electing Rahul Gandhi in 2024 too, they are merely handing over an advantage to Narendra Modi, he had said.
Some media organisations were quick enough to question Guha's statement asking, "Where is the real Guha?"
The real Guha continues to fight tooth and nail against Hindutva and many decisions of the government like the CAA, said the historian, while speaking to Asianet Newsable.
On December 19, several prominent Bengalureans including Guha was detained by the Bengaluru Police during a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act at Town Hall.
"I feel sorry for the police. They are getting orders from Delhi. This is totally wrong. Peaceful and ordinary citizens are protesting. Our Home Minister would not allow a peaceful protest to take place. Everyone should stand up," he had said.
The cops were deployed at Town Hall area as a 'bandh' had been called by a consortium of Left parties and Muslim organisations in Karnataka in protest over the CAA.
Protests have intensified in various parts of the country after the Parliament had passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, last week. The Bill became an Act after getting presidential assent.
