Chilean naval ship, built in India within a year, reaches home

The ship, built by leading private sector firm Larsen & Toubro, was manufactured within a year after the order worth $11.5 million was bagged in March 2020.

Made in India ship Chilean Navy Ship Janequeo has sailed into Valparaíso Harbour in Chile on Wednesday after covering a journey of 11,000 nautical miles through the Indian and Pacific oceans.

The ship, built by leading private sector firm Larsen & Toubro, was manufactured within a year after the order worth $11.5 million was bagged in March 2020.

The contract between the Chilean Navy and Larsen & Toubro was signed for the twin-screw Anchor Handling, Towing, Supply and Standby Vessel' (AHTSSV), with hybrid propulsion and dynamic positioning system.

"Chilean Navy Ship Janequeo, built by Indian company Larsen and Toubro Ltd, sails into Valparaíso Harbour on 23 February 2021," Indian Embassy in Chile said in a tweet. 

The vessel delivery will boost India's defence export market.

The ship is 70 meters long, 19 meters wide and has a maximum draft of 6.2 meters. 

It displaces 2,500 tons and has a static or Bollard Pull 150 tons. It can carry 38 crew and 22 passengers.

The vessel has a dynamic positioning system DP2 and it can fight fires, perform rescue action, resupply supplies offshore, respond to emergencies and recover oil spilt at sea and other tasks.

The ship is equipped with advanced diesel-hybrid propulsion.
