Bengaluru police uniforms get an 'English' makeover

Bengaluru police to wear English name tags

The Bengaluru city police have been ordered by police commissioner N S Megharikh to wear badges that display their names in both Kannada and English as part of their uniform.

The story behind what brought this change is quite interesting.

The police commissioner received a parcel with a policeman's name tag in it. Along with the name tag, was a letter written by a man who found the badge but couldn't read the name of the cop who lost it, because it was written in Kannada. However, he recognised the police logo and decided to send it directly to the commissioner.

Many officers lose their badges while on duty but rarely does anyone send these back to the cops.

Kannada is given priority in the state as it's the official language in Karnataka. However, with the growing presence of multinational companies, Bengaluru now has a large non-Kannada speaking population.

The commissioner made this move in order aid the non-Kannada speaking public in the city.
