Big drug haul busted in Maharashtra as Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized 300 kg heroin worth Rs 879 crores.

As per reports, the drug was being supplied to Punjab state and the consignment was named 'gypsum stone and talcum powder' to hoodwink officials.

The seizure happened on Thursday evening and after nabbing and regularisation of arrest of accused Prabhjot Singh, the officials confirmed it on Sunday.

The officials say that the contraband consignment was in the name of accused Prabhjot Singh and was sent from Afghanistan via Iran and then to India. And it is believed that the network and route are in use from last year to supply contraband to India.

The seizure gains significance as Punjab will face state elections and drugs are one of the main issues for political parties.

It can be recalled that, in a joint operation, officials from the Mumbai customs department and DRI seized 191 kg of heroin in August 2020 from a cargo container at the same port. Interestingly that time the drug mafia planned to dispose off Rs 1000 crore worth of contraband under the guise of 'Ayurvedic Medicine'.

The Port is now under scanner from the officials and every cargo ship is being thoroughly checked.
