Mumbai: Test opening batsman Mayank Agarwal has been called up to the India ODI squad for the West Indies series as a replacement for the injured Shikhar Dhawan.

In a media advisory on Wednesday (December 11), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said 28-year-old Agarwal will take Dhawan’s place in the 15-man squad. India and West Indies will play three ODIs starting from December 15.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Mayank Agarwal as replacement for the injured Shikhar Dhawan in India’s squad for the upcoming Paytm ODI series against West Indies,” BCCI said in a media advisory.

“Dhawan had suffered a deep cut on his left knee during a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy game against Maharashtra in Surat and was ruled out of the ongoing T20I series. The BCCI Medical Team feels that while Dhawan’s stitches are off and his wound is healing gradually, he still needs some more time before he regains full match fitness,” it added.

The right-handed Agarwal has been impressive in the five-day format. He was called up to the India squad during the ICC World Cup 2019 in England and Wales as a replacement player for Vijay Shankar. However, he did not get a game. India lost in the semi-finals, to New Zealand.

Agarwal is currently playing for Karnataka in a Ranji Trophy game against Tamil Nadu in Dindigul. He is yet to play an ODI. So far, he has featured in nine Tests for India.

India’s squad for 3 ODIs against West Indies

Virat Kohli (captain), Rohit Sharma (vice-captain), Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Shivam Dube, Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
