There has been a major surge in the number of Coronavirus cases in Maharashtra capital Mumbai, sparking speculation whether the state government could resort to stringent measures to control the situation.

According to the data released by the Maharashtra government, the city registered 1167 new positive cases and four deaths in the last 24 hours.

Across Maharashtra, over 8,807 new Coronavirus cases and 80 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours with the Akola division in Vidarbha declaring the highest number of cases in the state at 1,392.

The state government and Mumbai's municipal body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has made it clear that they are not in favour of another lockdown in the financial capital.

At the same time, authorities have acknowledged that resuming local train services in the city could have sparked the surge in Mumbai.

In view of the rising cases in the state, earlier today, the Delhi government issued travel guidelines necessitating a negative RT-PCR test for the virus before the journey.

Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka yesterday decided to set up check posts at border districts to screen people entering their state from Maharashtra.
