Sher Bahadur Deuba will be sworn in as the new PM of Nepal at 6 pm today.
Nepal caretaker Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday, paving the way for Sher Bahadur Deuba to take up the post, a day after the Supreme Court order. Oli in a statement said that our party abides with the order given by the Supreme Court.
Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba will take the oath of office and secrecy as the new Prime Minister later today at 6 pm.
Notably, Deuba, 74, has served as the Prime Minister of Nepal on four occasions.
Oli stepped down from his caretaker Prime Minister post after Nepal’s Supreme Court on July 12 ordered President Bidya Devi Bhandari to appoint Deuba as the new PM by Tuesday.
A statement released by the President’s office read: “Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has been appointed as the Prime Minister by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari as per Article 76 (5) of the Constitution.”
According to a report on Times Now, now Deuba will have to win the vote of confidence according to Article 76 (4) of the Constitution within 30 days of his appointment in a bid to survive as the PM for the remaining term of the 275-member House, despite the SC ruling.
At least two senior Nepali Congress leaders told The Kathmandu Post that a small Cabinet (around 7 members) is likely to be formed when Deuba takes the oath of office later today.
We have decided to form a small Cabinet initially, said Bal Krishna Khand, the chief whip of the NC.
We want to form a coalition government and have asked other partners of the alliance to join the government led by Deuba, he added.
