As a part of a bribery inquiry, recently, Russian investigators found a golden toilet and other extravagant luxuries at a traffic police officer’s lavish mansion. Southern Stavropol region's traffic police head, Col Alexei Safonov, allegedly took bribes for allotting fake permits to businesses. A report suggests that the cop was raided with 35 of his officers accused of running a ‘Mafia gang’. Following this, he has been dismissed on corruption charges. Meanwhile, videos of his extravagant house were leaked and distributed publicly. The clip shows Safonov’s mansion, lavish rooms, elegant decorations, billiards hall, and a golden toilet with gold bidet and sink.
The SK - a Russian state body, modelled on the US FBI says Safonov’s gang pocketed bribes over several years, worth more than 19m roubles (£187,000; $255,000). As per Russia's pro-Kremlin party MP, Alexander Khinshteyn, more than 35 traffic police officers in the region had been detained.
