Covid Initiative: Emergency Covid beds in Apartments

Bengaluru Urban alone accounts for nearly three-fourth of the new Coronavirus cases in Karnataka. With positivity rates peaking at over 11 per cent, the city has witnessed a rush for hospital beds. 

In a unique initiative, Manipal Hospitals has joined hands with Resident Welfare Associations in the city to set up emergency medical rooms in apartment complexes. The first such centre became operational in the Ranka Heights apartment in Domlur in Bengaluru.

Till the patient's relatives track down a hospital bed, the emergency rooms act as interim medical centres that provide the necessary support to the patient in the apartment premises. The centre is equipped with primary equipment, including oxygen concentrators, hospital beds, oximeter, CPAP, thermometer, nebulizer, and phablet. 

The first engagement will be remotely executed through video consultations with the doctor. The necessary action will be taken depending on the doctor's instruction. Isolation set up has been created in the apartment to ensure that the residents who tested positive can report themselves and avoid further Covid infection spread. A Covid task force with 2 EMR team members has been identified on the premises to handle the situation. PPE kits are provided at the centre for EMR team members.

While one member sets up the equipment, and the other can take the wheelchair, rush the patient to the EMR and use the phablet to connect with the doctor over a video call. The doctor will remotely advise on the basic emergency requirements to be done, like oxygen or nub plus oxygen or CPAP, if critical. The equipment will be used as per the doctor's instruction to stabilize the patient till the ambulance and professional medical help arrive and take over.
