Prime Minister Modi highlighted about India's 'whole of society' approach to fight the pandemic, synergising efforts of all levels of government, industry and civil society.
Calling for global unity, leadership and solidarity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the special responsibility of democratic and transparent societies to prevent future pandemics.
Prime Minister Modi participated in the first outreach session of the G7 Summit being held at Cornwall in the United Kingdom. However, the prime minister attended the event in a virtual format.
He had to cancel his in-person visit to the United Kingdom in the wake of increased cases of Covid-19.
As per sources, the prime minister mentioned that there should be a 'one earth, one health' approach. German Chancellor Angela Merkel echoed the same.
The session, titled 'Building Back Stronger-Health', focused on global recovery from the coronavirus pandemic and on strengthening resilience against future pandemics.
Prime Minister Modi expressed appreciation for the support extended by the G7 and other guest countries during the recent wave of Covid-19 in India.
Further, he highlighted India's 'whole of society' approach to fight the pandemic, synergising efforts of all levels of government, industry and civil society.
"The prime minister also spoke of India's successful use of open-source digital tools for contact tracing and vaccine management, and conveyed India's willingness to share its experience and expertise," the External Affairs Ministry said.
Expressing India's commitment to supporting collective endeavours to improve global health governance, he sought G7's support for the proposal moved by India and South Africa at the World Trade Organisation for a TRIPS waiver on vaccine production.
"Australia and others came out strongly in support of that," sources added.
India's emphasis on keeping open supply chains for vaccine raw materials and components to help enhance vaccine production in countries like India also received widespread support.
Prime Minister Modi will participate in the final day of the G7 Summit on June 13 and will speak in two sessions. This is the 7th time the United Kingdom is holding the presidency of the G7 and has invited India, Australia, South Korea and South Africa, as guest countries.
India has engaged closely with the G7 on health, climate & environment, digital and technology and economic resilience panel.
