Tokyo Olympics: Serbian rowing athlete tests COVID positive

The Tokyo Olympics is well set to begin on July 23, a year after being delayed due to the pandemic. However, health safety and concerns prevail, while a rowing athlete from Serbia has tested positive for COVID-19.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics is less than a month away, as preparations for the same continue in full swing. Meanwhile, COVID concerns continue to remain in the city, while cases among athletes have begun to show up.

According to Kyodo News, a Serbian athlete has become the latest member to test COVID positive. Although the athlete's identity has not been revealed yet, it is being reported that he belongs to the rowing team and is aged 30-plus.

Following the team's arrival in Tokyo, the antigen test was conducted at the Haneda airport. Upon testing positive, he was isolated, while the other team members who travelled with him have been sent to a separate facility near the airport.

The athletes were scheduled to travel to Nanto, Toyama Prefecture, to begin their training. However, now that a member has tested positive, the training session would be cancelled since the other team members would be kept under observation.

It happens to be the third case of an athlete testing COVID positive. Earlier, a couple of members from the Uganda team had tested positive. After the first member tested positive, the other members were sent to Izumisano, Osaka Prefecture, for training. However, a few days later, the second member tested positive too.
