Sachin Tendulkar the Master Blaster, Indian cricket God owes a great deal of his success to this man, who left his cricket, job and career for him.
The fact that Sachin was not his ‘own’ brother did not deter this great man from leaving no stone unturned to realise Sachin’s dream. Ajit Tendulkar, Sachin’s half-brother, did everything to make it possible for Sachin to play cricket with peace of mind. And Sachin put his heart and soul to become what he is today.
Many might not know that Ajit is not Sachin’s own brother. However, the family is always so closely knit that no one ever suspected it.
Sachin has two half-brothers Nitin and Ajit, and a half-sister Savita. Their mother passed away with the birth of third child. With three children including one new born Ramesh didn’t know how to take care of them. At this time the family decided that Ramesh should marry his wife’s sister Rajani.
Thus Rajani entered Ramesh’s family and soon became a more than a mother to all the children. When Sachin was born, all the children were attached to Rajani Maushi (Rajani aunt) as called by Nitin, Ajit and Savita.
Thus Sachin never felt that they were half brothers or half sister. A close friend of Sachin told Quint that once both were caught plucking mangoes as the branch of the tree, they were standing on came crashing down with a loud noise.
Sachin’s father Ramesh immediately took a decision to send him to a coach and start his cricket practice. Ajit was already experienced in playing cricket. From here onwards Ajit took Sachin through many directions which proved positive for Sachin’s career. Starting from choosing his first coach (Ramakanth Achrekar) to managing finances, Ajit took decisions for Sachin.
There came a time when Ajit had to decide on one person’s game. Even though he was a very good cricket player himself, he decided to support Sachin and his cricket. The first thing he sacrificed was his own cricket. Then his job and a career as he was looking after Sachin’s finances and managing his game tours and everything related to brother’s cricket.
In Sachin’s own words, Sachin has said, “There is no buddy like a brother!! Thank you for all your support over the years, Ajit. “
