Vaikuntha Ekadashi is the perfect day as per Hindu calendar for the devotees of Lord Vishnu. Ekadashi is the eleventh day of the Lunar fortnight. In the Hindu calendar, every month there are two Ekadashis - one during Shukla Paksha (while waxing phase of the moon) and the other, Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon). Every Ekadashi has a specific significance, and so does Vaikuntha Ekadashi, which is named after Vaikuntha, the abode of Shri Vishnu. In 2020, Vaikuntha Ekadashi is celebrated today (January 6).

The myth associated with Ekadashi

According to religious belief, a demon named Muran had created ruckus in the cosmos. He grew so devastating that all Gods sought help from Lord Shiva, who asked them to approach Lord Vishnu for the same, and it led to an intense battle between Lord Vishnu and Muran, the demon. One day, when Lord Vishnu was taking rest in a case to create a new Shastra (weapon) to annihilate Muran, the devil attempted to kill him. But, a feminine power emerged out of Lord Vishnu and shielded him from the attack. Muran got killed by female energy. Pleased by her devotion, Lord Vishnu named her Ekadashi. And to thank her for saving him, Lord Vishnu granted her a boon, and she asked him to liberate all those observing a fast on the eleventh day, from the cycle of birth and death.

Hence, by observing a fast on this day, devotees give their bodies a much-needed break to get closer to their mind.
