The mythological tale behind the festival is one of its kind. According to a local legend, a bull or basava used to destroy the cultivated ground nuts right before the harvest season. Furious and alarmed, farmers then made a deal with the bull. They promised to offer the sum of their first harvest to the bull every year following which an idol of Basava emerged on its own. The famous temple we see today in Basvanagudi is not a mere structure but carries with it years of unravelled history. Watch the video on Asianet Newsable and be a part of this fun ride.
