tamil nadu village gets electricity 70 years after independence infrastructure

Ever since independence, India has flourished in various sectors. But, this village in Tamil Nadu was literally living in darkness till date until on Saturday when the village got its first glimpse of light. Sembikarai, a tribal village in Kovai finally had electricity. In fact, this is the first time the tribal residents of the village have seen an electric bulb.

Four years ago, a contract was signed by the Electricity Board, which directed it to provide electricity to Sembikarai and Thumanur villages.

But the project was brushed under the carpet since then. The contract was resumed in January by the efforts of MLA V.C Arukutty of Kavundampalayam.

There are 200 families residing in this village, but only one-fourth of the population has been provided with electricity.

The Tamil Nadu Government has given them free gifts such as television sets, mixer grinders and fans, but without electricity, these gadgets have just been a visual showcase in their homes.

It was told that the delay was due to the intrusion of wild elephants. The project is on track, hence the remaining parts of the village will soon be provided with electricity, said government officials.
