Tamil Nadu colleges to have 89 new arts and science courses this year

The Tamil Nadu Higher Education department has decided to introduce 89 new arts and science courses at the graduate and the postgraduate levels. These will be inducted in 24 constituent colleges of state universities. Higher education minister KP Anbalagan made the announcement in the assembly on Thursday and also allocated Rs 2.82 crore
for the purpose. 

With a dramatic shift in the preference of students towards arts and science, the state education department said that this move could be a precursor to the introduction of new courses in other government colleges. According to the recent statistics, enrollment in science and arts subjects has gone up from 9,714 in 2015-2016 to 13,274 in 2016-17 in these 24 colleges. 

Apart from this, the government has also built the platform for better employment opportunities for the students of arts and science. According to inside sources, the  Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education (TANSCHE) will set up an industry-compliant certification module in partnership with Tamil Nadu Skill Development Council (TNSDC), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Mahindra Pride School (MPS).

Here, the candidates will have to go through three levels of skill-based training modules and will be certified as employable as per industry standards. A sum of Rs 2.94 crore has been dedicated for the module formulated under the Tamil Nadu Initiatives (TANII).

Students in engineering can now enroll to advanced post-graduate and research-based engineering which will also have  Rs 6,000 per month assistantship attached to it. Meanwhile, three new PG courses -ME power electronics and drives, ME applied electronics and ME computer science and engineering -have also been introduced at Government Engineering College, Bargur, in Krishnagiri at an outlay of Rs 3.58 crore.
