Chennai Metro allocates space for the construction of food plaza

Soon residents in Chennai will have a food plaza and a shopping mart at the underground Chennai Central Metro station and at the proposed Central Square respectively as the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has already allotted space for these projects. The Central Square will be constructed opposite the suburban railway terminal, Moore Market Complex (MMC), located next to Chennai Central railway station.

The new development came as a welcome relief as the issues between IRCTC and Southern Railways has indefinitely postponed the prospect of a food plaza at the Chennai Central station. The proposed location of the Central Square and the alteration of the site for the food plaza, and subsequent withdrawal of the contractor from this project are some of the issues causing the delays.

Meanwhile, the Chennai Metro is working in full swing to construct the food plaza which will not only cater to the commuters of the metro rail but also serve passerby, the Times of India quoted a metro official as saying. The same report stated that Chennai Central and MMC see a footfall of above 5 lakh people every day.

Chennai Metro is also planning to construct two seven-deck underground parking spaces which are expected to be ready by mid next year.
