8 simple things you can use tea leaves for apart from making tea

Instead of the brewed tea leaves clogging your drains and staining your utensils here’s how you can put them to use.

You get a room freshener at the cost of a tea bag

All you need to do is add a few drops of essential oil to the dry used tea bags and they will come handy to keep smells out of your office, small room or car even.  If you feel the smell is wearing off then just add few more drops to rekindle the fragrance. Tea leaves absorb odours like anything so they can be hidden out of sight, and still leave you with a sweet fragrance. For those who smoke in their rooms, this could be a handy tool.

Your rat problem can be solved

This works almost instantly, and needless to say does not involve you dirtying your hand with chemicals, fearing for your children or your pets. Your humble tea bag can do the trick for you. All you need some peppermint oil or peppermint tea bags or better brew some tea with peppermint in it. Put them in a bag or dip the bag in the peppermint mixture and then place it at the openings where you suspect rats and insects enter.  It seems like the smell of peppermint repulses rats, rodents, insects like spiders and after using it for a couple of days, you will see the difference. Plus your home will be smelling minty fresh.

Your foot soak at home

It absolutely works wonders, flushes out the toxins and leaves your feet feeling supple and fresh. Add used tea bags to warm water and soak your feet to neutralise foot odour, soften calluses, and nourish your skin. You can do it when you are watching TV or eating a meal or just spending some me time.

Hair conditioner

For this one you do not need to spend Rs 20 and above, depending on the tea bags you buy or the tea you brew. Make some weak tea with your used bags and use after your shampoo to condition and nourish your hair and scalp.

Been out in the sun too long? Here’s cure for sunburn

Effective and cheap. No need to run to expensive creams and salons. Throw some used tea bags into the fridge, however, if they smell bad after sometime discard them. Tea also has shelf life. Ok, so if you have some used tea bags dampen it and press or gently rub on sunburned skin. The tannic acid in tea has a cooling effect and helps repair the skin.

Keep your fridge free from smells

Yes, the smell of strong cooked food, pungent smells, smell from vegetables, etc all can go in a jiffy. Place dried out tea leaves in the refrigerator in an uncovered container and they'll soak up those odours in a day or two. (Note: Never store dry tea you plan to drink in the refrigerator, though. It'll soak up odour and the moisture will cause the tea to deteriorate quickly.)

Make meat tender

The tannins in tea make it a great tenderizer. Marinate meat in strong-brewed black tea for several hours or overnight before roasting or grilling.

Beauty tip for your chapped lips

Green tea can help alleviate the harsh sting of dry and chapped lips. Just apply a green tea bag soaked in warm water over your lips. The tea will help relieve the burning sensation in addition to hydrating flaky skin and soothing dryness.
