Auto driver attempts to abduct female passenger in broad daylight in TVM, arrested

The police arrested an autorickshaw driver in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday for allegedly trying to abduct a female passenger and outrage her modesty.

The accused has been identified as Kumaran, 43, a native of Naruvamoodu, according to The Hindu. The victim, an engineering student, jumped out of the auto to escape the ordeal and sustained injuries. She has been admitted to a private hospital in Chackai.

The incident happened around 8.30 am on Sunday after the victim had boarded the auto from Kannammoola after her dance class to return home. Kumaran refused to drop the passenger at her destination near Chackai and drove away. The victim jumped out of the vehicle as the auto turned towards Venpalavattom.

Bikers, who were following the auto after hearing the cries of the girl, chased down and apprehended Kumaran, before handing him over to the police.

The police said that the accused talked indecently to the victim several times during the ride and had also asked her to accompany him to Karikkakom. Kumaran has been booked under various provisions of the IPC, including those pertaining to abduction and attempt to outrage a woman's modesty.
