The police have registered a case against SFI's Idukki district secretary MS Sarath and eight other activists for assaulting policemen outside a police station in Thodupuzha.

The unpleasant incident took place on Wednesday when the police tried to stop a fight between a group of SFI activists and some students of an IHRD college near the police station.

When the fight broke out, a policeman ran in to stop them, much to the annoyance of the SFI activists. They turned to the policeman and started pushing and manhandling him as two other officers rushed in to rescue their colleague.

The group of students then assaulted all three policemen, grabbing them by the collar and hitting them in the face. One police officer was even pushed down to the ground, and he narrowly escaped being run over by an onrushing bike.

There was an attempt to cover up the incident with the help of the police but CCTV footage from a nearby building surfaced and went viral, prompting the police top brass to step in and call for strict action against the assailants.
