Tense situation prevailed at the Parthasarathy Temple in Guruvayur on Thursday after devotees protested and prevented an official of Malabar Devaswom Board to take charge at the shrine.

Devotees prevented the official from entering the temple and shut the doors from inside, alleging that it was an attempt by the Malabar Devaswom to take over the temple. The official had reached the temple on the basis of a High Court order.

Two cases were registered for obstructing the official from doing the duty, the police said, adding, the official returned without taking charge in view of the situation.

Meanwhile, the BJP has alleged that CPM-led LDF government is trying to take over the Parthasarathy Temple in the pretext of allegations of irregularities in the temple administration.

BJP state president Kummanom Rajasekharan alleged that the state government was attempting to take over Hindu temples on silly grounds and warned that the RSS would not remain a mere spectator if steps to harass a particular community continued.

There are certain places of worship of non-Hindus in the state which have remained closed for years due to disputes, Kummanam pointed out, adding that the government had not made any attempt to take over these shrines or resolve the disputes.

The attempt of the LDF government to acquire only temples is a challenge to Hindu community, the BJP leader alleged.
