Bengaluru's piped gas dream to become reality soon

The woes of booking cooking gas cylinders, waiting for supply and carrying it to top floors will all be things of the past soon. The dream of procuring cooking gas through pipeline at home is soon going to be realised. A milestone has been set by Bengaluru City Gas Distribution (CGD) by initiating to provide cooking gas through pipeline. The project was inaugurated by the Union Minister for Petroleum Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday. The contract to implement the project has been given to Gas India Limited (GAIL).

The project, being implemented at a cost of Rs 6,283 crore, has already laid steel pipelines of 66 km and MDPE pipelines of 454 km. Not only residences and industries but also commercial complexes will be supplied gas through pipelines. The project is eco-friendly, safe and also economical. A total area of 4,395 sq km will be covered under this project in the City.

The Gale Gas India will supply gas in under four segments: For vehicles (CNG), for residential use (PNG), for Commercial utility and for industries. Of the 34,500 houses, 23,000 houses will be covered under this project. Currently over 3000 houses are already having gas supplied through pipes. Residences in Singasandra, HSR Layout, Dollars' Colony, Mangammana Palya, HRBR Layout, Jalahalli and other areas, along with over 22 commercial complexes are using PNG connection.

There is already a CNG Station set up and working in Prem Nagar, Laggere. Soon 3 more stations will be set up in Sumana Halli, Hennur and Peenya Bus depot. Vehicles can get CNG filled up at these stations. At least 60 gas filling stations will be set up in the City. The Companies that have already opted for CNG connections are Intel, Bauch, BHL, Toyota, Garuda Polytex, GTR Aluminium and others.

Those desirous of getting connection should apply online through the GAIL website. They can also get the application forms at the office on New BEL Road. The staff will visit the spot and assess the feasibility and then sanction. The application cost is Rs 300 with a refundable deposit of Rs 5,500. The bill for usage has to be paid once in 3 months.

The GAIL has launched a mobile app which facilitates the amount of gas used and the charges for the same. It also helps the consumers to identify stations near their area. The app also provides all information about CNG and PNG and measures to be taken during emergencies.

Shilpi Tandan, vice-chairman, Corporate Communications Division, GAIL has said that gas will be supplied to the City through Dabhol-Bengaluru connection. The implementation has started only since one and half years. This is a eco-friendly and safe project.
