Navigation technology may be boon to arthritis patients

1000 knee and ankle replacement surgeries conducted using navigation technology

A majority of people suffering from arthritis, knee and ankle joint injury hesitate to opt for replacement surgery for the fear of misinformation that they will not be able to conduct their daily routine after the surgery. They continue to suffer the pain and trauma. Dr P Chandrashekhar, senior consultant and HoD – Orthopaedics, Sakra Hospital is the first surgeon to use navigation technology for replacement surgery in the State, says that the new technology helps patients to recover total normalcy. He has conducted over 1000 successful surgeries at Sakra World Hospital. He is the first surgeon in the State to use this technology. Strongly recommending the navigational technology for replacement surgery, Dr Chandrashekhar said it involves minimal invasion and is more accurate. Blood loss and scar are also minimal in this technology. It can eliminate alignment errors also.

He had invited his patient S K Srinivasan (85) to the press meet, who had both his knees operated upon to perform yoga to prove that the navigational technology can successfully get back normal functioning of knee joints. This technique can be used on patients with pacemakers, or who have undergone angioplasty or cardiac bypass also, he said.
