MI will look for a quick fix to their bowling combinations as they struggled against a dominant Steven Smith on a purple patch of his own.
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) registered a record-breaking T20 win, with all 10-wickets intact against Gujarat Lions in their opening match at Rajkot. The decision to tinker with the opening combination of Gambhir-Uthappa and giving Chris Lynn a go, came to devastating effect as he continued his Big Bash League form, scoring an unbeaten 93 of 41 balls in a flurry of fours and sixes.
Mumbai Indians (MI) have traditionally struggled to find form at the start of most IPL seasons and this year they had to face the in-form combo of Rahane-Smith, with the Pune Captain doing the bulk of the damage.
Even though MI scored a formidable 184, the bowling struggled with Tim Southee failing to affect proceedings much. Harbhajan Singh might be brought in to change the combinations and the return of Lasith Malinga will give Rohit Sharma & Co. fresh impetus.
KKR’s only blemish in the opening game will be the form of two of their foreign pacers, Woakes and Boult who gave away a combined 75 runs from their seven overs. But the return of Shakib Al Hasan will give the management options to think about.
Wankhede has given us some high-scoring encounters and this promises to be another enticing contest as Mumbai will look to bounce back after their 7-wicket loss to Pune and Kolkata will look to build on their explosive start.
