TDP MLA Bhuma Nagi Reddy dies of heart attack
- This was the third time the MLA had suffered an attack
- His wife Shobha Nagi Reddy’s death is said to have sent him into depression
- Bhuma had played an important role in the formation of YSR Congress Party

Bhuma Nagi Reddy was the man who everybody came to know when he stood against former prime minister PV Narasimha Rao from Nandyal constituency in 199. That was literally the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLA’s first brush with fame.
The 53-year-old MLA had suffered the attack at his Allagadda residence and despite the doctors trying their best to resuscitate him for over an hour, he had passed on. Bhuma, as he was known in the political circles, was a widower and now leaves behind a son and two daughters. This was the third time the MLA had suffered an attack and unfortunately it was a fatal one, he also had a medical history of having had a bypass done earlier.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Minister Kamineni Srinivas, MLC N. Lokesh Babu and party leaders condoled the death. In fact, Naidu even tweeted about Nagi Reddy having suffered a heart attack. Among others, YSR Congress Party chief and Leader of Opposition YS Jagan Mohan Reddy also expressed his grief over the death of Bhuma and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family. Bhuma had played an important role in the formation of YSR Congress Party.
Bhuma joined TDP in 2016 after winning on a YSR Congress Party ticket in the 2014 elections. Reddy's wife Shobha Nagireddy, who herself was a four-time MLA died in a tragic car accident on her way back from an election campaign during 2014 Assembly elections. Theirs was a difficult marriage as the two had married despite familial opposition, a rare occurrence in political families in those days. Shobha’s death is supposed to have been a setback to Bhuma, and his daughter Akhilapriya, MLA from Allagada also mentioned how it had broken down her father.
Among other speculations, a Telugu daily has also added that Bhuma was miffed with CM Chandrababu Naidu for not giving him a prominent position or ministry at the time of joining TDP last year. Coming to Bhuma’s political journey, it is learnt that Bhuma entered politics in 1987 after the murder of his father Bhuma Bali Reddy. After having worked among the local bodies he contested from Allagadda Assembly constituency in 1991 after his brother Bhuma Sekhar Reddy, a sitting MLA died of a heart attack.
Bhuma’s rise to fame, was when things turned in his favour despite losing to PV Narasimha Rao. Rao resigned from the Nandyala seat to retain the Berhampur constituency leading to the by-elections. Bhuma was the undisputed candidate again from TDP and won with a record majority of over 4 lakhs over Congress' Rangaiah Naidu to enter for the first time in the 11th Lok Sabha.
